Subject: I have wondered too. Would love to hear what people think. Also trying ot find out what is considered the 'right length' f ro differnt dances eg reel or slip jig etc.. like how many steps and how many bars make a step?? can't seem to find thatinfo anywhere.. quite discouraging for kids who like to 'work on stuff for themselves'..
In reply to: clueless 's message, "very curious about dance steps, not sets or ceili. which steps are considered traditional and which are 'modern'. any description would be appreciated too. :]" on Tue, Mar 13 2007, 23:52:52

[> Off top of my head, I would say that rocks, crosskeys, kickouts, over 2,3s are traditional. Steps like toe work. bicycle jumps and maybe butterfly jumps are less traditional. It is a lot more athletic and agressive now for instance with the reel than it used to be. -- storm, Thu, Mar 15 2007, 12:43:25 [1]

[> [> thanks Storm, i've heard of some of them, not sure of crosskeys step? not sure about others but feel that reel and slip jig are started to look a little like floor gymnastics sometimes and occassionally the speed around the stage looks frantic. -- still a bit clueless, Fri, Mar 16 2007, 20:06:15 [1]

[> [> [> To do crosskeys you start off by crossing the feet, so that outside of foot is against the outside of other foot and then you somehow have to twist it back round the foot very fast and close to the floor so it ends up back round the right way! Looks fantastic when done right but last time I saw them was when I danced so that is going back some years now but the rule book encourages TC to continue to teach them! TC tried to teach dd but to no success (if anyone has any better tips please give!!) Such a shame, would love them in her steps! Going back to butterflies, although they have been around now for some years I wouldn't class them as traditional, copied from ballet, but very lovely all the same. -- storm, Sun, Mar 18 2007, 1:16:54 [1]
