I have recently received my Grandfather's Merchant Navy records and they state that he joined in 1926 aged 15 and was an apprentice deck boy on the SS Alban. I'm putting together a Family History file for my Mum and would like a chunk of it to be about her father. So, I was hoping that someone could give me a link to find out what life would have been like for a 15 year old deck boy at this time. I've searched but haven't come up with very much. He was previously in an orphange, Styal homes and Im guessing that the welfare section of the Merchant Navy recruited him from there.
