Date Posted: 8/11/07 7:05pm In reply to: john strange 's message, "Re: Remembrance Day (Armistice Day)" on 8/11/07 6:23am Vernon, I am most certainly wearing my poppy with pride this year. Along with my MN pin. I don't have much knowledge about any of the wars other than what was taught at school and back then I had no interest. Now I am older I am constantly looking for more information. I think probably because of Dad. He was only a child at the time of WW2, but he had great respect for our war heroes. And he taught me a lot. I have also learned a great deal from this wonderful site. It has brought to my attention the fact that it was not only the Armed Services but also the Merchant Navy that played a great and sacrificial role in the wars.I was ignorant of this fact as sadly are many others. It is indeed the forgotten service. I searched the local weekly paper yesterday for just one mention of the MN with regard to Remembrance Day but nothing. I now feel it is my duty to educate people and this is my intention. I know you have MN day in a few parts of the world but it is time that everyone realised that many other lives outside of the armed forces were sacrificed. I will this year for the first time since leaving the UK be attending our local Remembrance Service, and I will be taking my 3 year old grandson with me in honor of his Great Grandad and also in honor of the many men and women who lost thier lives not only in the Armed Services but also the Merchant Navy. With the Greatest Respect. Linda [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
