Hi Vernon.
A lot of us in the west coast and beyond would have read this article in this weeks Oban Times, but good news should be shared.

Oban branch of Royal British Legion Scotland is determined that the efforts of the merchant navy during World War Two should no longer go unrecognised.
As Remembrance Day approaches, members are preparing to mark the bravery of the troops who, according to Bert MacBrayne, ‘probably had the most dangerous occupation anyone could have during the war’.
‘If it hadn’t been for the merchant navy, this country would have been on its knees by 1941. It was kept going by the merchant navy which sailed to America and Canada by ships which were often slow and outdated.
‘Oban was an important convoy assembly point and a lot of the men who sailed from here never came back, and we have felt for a long time that the merchant navy never got the recognition it deserved.’
This Sunday at 3pm, members of the Royal British Legion will gather at the Caledonian MacBrayne terminal as Oban man and former merchant navy seaman John MacLean unveils a plaque in memory of his colleagues.
John sailed as a young boy on one of the convoys from Oban, and served in different theatres of the war with the merchant navy. His father was also a seaman who lost his life when his ship was torpedoed.
Captain Norman Morrison who also sailed as a young seaman during the war will lay the wreath of remembrance. He continued in the merchant navy until he was transferred to the royal navy and ended up as commodore of the Northern Lighthouse Fleet.
