According to survivors of the German ship some men got into the sea, which is shark infested in warm weather. It is thought that they perished in the sea before any help could arrive. The Germans it is reported then scuttled their ship with the remaining crew taking to life rafts. There are reports that some of the German crew say they saw the 'Sydney' teaming on but going down at the bow. More may become clear when photos are taken of the remains.
