Date Posted: 13/04/08 11:46am In reply to: Hugh 's message, "Re: SS TORDENE" on 12/04/08 12:39pm Mr. Hunter: is recorded as a casualty of enemy action by COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVE COMMISSION, His ship the SS. Tyndall, 27 January 1945. Remembered with honour BARRY (MERTHYR DYFAN) BURIAL GROUND. He is also recorded on the Shetland Roll of Honour as Hunter, Andrew Carpenter: SS Tordene. Died at Barry Dock, Wales As a result of illness caused by exposure following shipwreck. 1942 We believe that the CWGC, may have correct date and ship, also that the Shetland Roll of Honour may have recorded a last known vessel, as the ship types are also totally different and the dates do not confer. There is no doubt that it is the same person. Hence we seek info on Tordene as part of our research. Having been in pooor health of late, I hope to complete research ASAP. He is buried at Barry Cemetery, I have taken a photo of the Grave, There is no doubt that this is the same person. We strive to solve the ridddle of the ships and dates. 1942 / 1945 SS. Tordene / Tyndall ANY INFO OF ANY ENEMY ATTACK ETC: Would be welcomed, as Shetland mention shipwreck and no evidence of either vessel being attacked or lost has been found in this circumstance. I HAVE NOT FOLLOWED UP: Previous information as I am only juast returning to full health, but the followimg will be the next course and any further help would be welcomed. Regards Keith. It is most likely that the CWGC DETAILS ARE CORRECT and that the Shetland roll of Honour, that was completed in the late eighties was not well researched and from memory etc. MORE INFO MAY BE AT: Andrew Albert John Hunter Dis A No 130380 born 21st March 1915 Lerwick His Medal entitlement is shown at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=4524696&queryType=1&resultcount=2 His seaman’s pouch should be in (although these don’t always contain a lot) http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=-3275231&CATLN=7&Highlight=%2CR130380&accessmethod=0 His CRS10 may be in http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=8124145&CATLN=6&Highlight=%2CHUNTER&accessmethod=0 Will try to acess these details next. Andrew would have lived for approx a year after the attack and died from related injuries. Although he was living in the Barry area, he did visit Shetland at least once prior to passing on. Thanks again in advance, Regards. Keith. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
