Hugh,

Many thanks for your prompt reply and very useful information.

Today 2nd Sep 2007, I have attended a small Merchant Navy service where I was able to discuss with local Merchant Navy Association members a little more about the death of not 9 but 10 local residents who were serving on the Frances Massey.

Locally they are looking to place a commemorative shield with all of the crews names, highlighting the lost local residents. As you might imagine it was a tragic incident for many in a small seaside town.

During WWII our family lost three Merchant Navy Sailors all torpedoed and drown at sea. A forth Royal Navy Officer survived several torpedo incidents.

They were all young men doing their best to help the war effort.

They were my Mother's Uncles (my Great Uncles)

I list their names below

Robert McDermott (Port Talbot) Merchant Navy - SS Frances Massey died 6 Jun 1940 drown at sea
James McDermott (Port Talbot) Merchant Navy - (Ship TBA)(Died TBA)

The two young men above were my Grandmothers only Brothers

Thomas Burke (Port Talbot) Merchant Navy - (Ship TBA)(Died TBA)
William Burke (Port Talbot) Royal Navy Officer - survived several torpedo attacks and died of natural causes in the late 1970's

The two young men above were my Grandfathers only Brothers

God Bless them all including my Grandparents who are no longer with us.

Ray
