Date Posted: 12/02/08 7:12am Hi All. I am re-reading 'The Merchant Service today" I got when in school,in 1942. it was published that year. And there is a graph on Britian falling from owning half the merchant ships in the world to a quarter in 37 years. In 1901 percentage wise they had [50.2] in 1914 [41.6] in 1938 [26.4]in the same period the USA went from 4.2 to 13.4 the equivelant of 6,909,507 tons So we were on the downslide as far as ships went from the time we went to sea, it obviously increased at a faster rate with the advent of containers.
