If he was a Merchant Seamen, I can point you to where his service record will be. If he was a Royal Navy DEMS gunner, I can point you in the right direction, though the ships gunners served on are more difficult to find as their records normally only show the naval accountancy base they were assigned to. As you know the passage of time sometimes clouds family history as you point out, one person said he was a chef, another said a gunner.
