There were a lot of characters on the coast, so many seamen jumping then doing a ring bolt for Aus then coming back in. There was a big turnover of seamen, as a lot used to get a job on the wharfs, or in the rigging lofts, I think half the riggers at the Kawarau pulp and paper mills where MN.
