Top of the late evening!
Night 1 is already in the books. I was a bit overwhelmed with the quick pace of everything, though it was not that much different in 2019. Too much is being squeezed into 2 nights. I realize they are having financial problems, but if the contestants are there couldn't they possibly rent the ballroom for a third night? The social impact statement and the additional onstage question about the same issue is redundant and it adds to the monotony. In my opinion, it is too much and there is entirely too much emphasis on speaking portions of the competition. Red carpet could be (gasp!) just judged on the gown. I know that is too judgemental or whatever the rationale is, but hell. We like pageants!
Speaking of, congratulations to Miss India for winning Miss Universe. She is BEAUTIFUL and very thoughtful, very well-spoken. You know who she reminds me of? Amal Clooney. A little bit in looks, but a global beauty who is intelligent and has both the beauty and passion to make people look at her and hear exactly what she has to say. With all due respect to our contestants, the Miss Universe pageant just embraces being a pageant. The new Miss Universe is every bit as intelligent as the contestants at Miss America. People like gowns just because we like fashion! Nothing wrong with a beautiful woman in an evening gown. I would rather even go back to the year Nia won than all this talking.
That brings me to tonight's competition. Some armchair judges are saying the fix is in for NY. I don't see it that way and I want to see more of the competition to see how it shakes out tomorrow night. I happen to like Sydney. That being said, she is a very unique contestant. She has a very big stage presence, very confident, and she might come off as overconfident to some. What you saw in her talent presentation is similar to how she presents herself. I have no problems with her winning talent. I do not question it. When I saw it, I thought she was very good. But my feeling was: how are the judges going to take this? They would either love it or shy away from it. They loved it. She won over a panel at Miss New York being herself and the judges loved it. But again, too much competition left to call her the winner.
Alaska was one of the most pleasant surprises ever for me. She was soooo shocked when she was called! It was absolutely adorable. She spoke about the Special Olympics and having a developmentally disabled sibling. Without a doubt, she comes off as very genuine, very sweet and kind. In a way, she reminds me of Teresa Scanlan in that she doesn't seem to see herself as a threat to win. She's a bit more quiet and reserved than Teresa, however. I can't wait to see more of her tomorrow night, because the judges absolutely must love her. I can already see why.
My sleeper of the night and of the pageant so far: Colorado. Actually, she isn't a sleeper because Colorado is doing very well at Miss America as of late. She very well may continue that. She has a quiet elegance about her, she is an active military member without beating it to death and she is highly intelligent. I can't wait to get to know more about her.
The 100th anniversary is much more of a bust. The only thing that really got to me is they had a collage of videos with everyone winning. Our Leanza looked so young and vibrant. I got choked up when I saw her. I still can't believe she is no longer with us. Thinking about it, I guess with COVID, being too close to Christmas, etc. maybe that is why so few Miss Americas are there for the 100th anniversary. The whole presentation was a bit awkward because they were waiting and waiting for Miss Americas to come out between pauses. Cara got the most applause. I still think she is very beloved.
I am going to post a complete rundown tomorrow, look for it around 2 p.m or so Eastern time. Overall, talent was not very strong tonight at all. Hoping we see some better performances tomorrow night.
