Since everybody likes talent, and it is 50 percent of the score, I am going to do talent first. And since it is such a long rundown. I am going to do a separate post for all the Q&A portion, but it’s hard to really give a numerical score on all of that, but I will do my best to give a complete rundown. Will explain later, it is just too much talking and the same thing over and over.
Keep in mind Miss America scoring is 1-3 below average, 4-6 average, 7-9 above average and 10 perfection. Truthfully, I see very few 10s. It was a weaker night overall last night, I wouldn’t have given out anything past 7 except to the winner and Michigan. So here goes in order of appearance. And Miss Maine, as we know, had to leave the competition due to COVID. Sadly, nobody mentioned a thing about her and they said 51 contestants. Obviously they were reading from a teleprompter.
VA-sang Don’t Forget Me. It sounded like she may have some good ability in upper ranges, but she was a bit flat throughout the song. I hesitate to say this, but her sister has the better vocal ability in her family. She doesn’t quite have that level of talent. The overall performance would only be about a 4 or 5.
IN-sang Stand Up For Love. She has a nice voice, one of the better vocalists of the night. She had a little bit of problems towards the end of it, but it was a very nice performance. You can tell she’s got some talent I would give it a lower 7 just because she had some problems towards the end.
CT-she danced an Indian dance to an original either composition or dance that she choreographed herself. I am not an expert on Indian dancing, so I cannot comment on the technicality of it. I would say that it lacked the energy of a Nina D. type of dance. I would give it a 5.
ND-sang Habanero. A little bit better than Erika Harold’s performance of it. Her dress was very pretty, though, and she looked good in front of the camera. I would say on vocal ability a 5, the presentation a 6.
MI-classical piano piece. I forget the name of it, it was a familiar one, though. She did a very nice job with it. Very flawless, energetic. She was my winner just because I was not sure NY would fly with the judges. Solid 8. If talent is 50 percent and she does well tonight it will absolutely propel her into the top 15.
WY-inspirational monologue. It was nice and she seemed genuine, it kind of ended on making a wish and didn’t seem complete to me. There were several more monologue/speaking talents, but this one wasn’t really outstanding. It lacked energy. I would have scored it a 4, 5 if it was being generous.
CA-sang Astonishing. I commented about it last night, but she was probably one of the better ones in the first group. Solid vocals, she has some power behind her voice. High 7 for me.
NH-tap dance to a song called I Like To Party, or something to that effect. I never heard the song before. It was fun and had good energy. I could tell by her face how much fun she was having. I guess when I think of tap at Miss America I think of someone like Nicole Messina, it wasn’t on part with that. But it was decent. I would say 5-6 range.
KY-sang I’d Rather Go Blind. She has a nice voice, and she had a solid performance. No missed notes, no pitch problems, etc. The only thing I would say is that the performance lacked a bit of energy. I would have given it a 6.
AL-an upbeat version of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. The performance itself was good, entertaining. I wasn’t blown away by her skills, but it was entertaining indeed and it was more about the performance end of things. I gave it a 7.
PA-baton routine to River Deep Mountain High. It was a solid performance. She had good energy and brought in 3 batons at the end. Pretty colored costume as well. Iowans Diana Reed and Renee Steudimann are goddesses of baton at Miss America and it wouldn’t have risen to that level, but better than Simone Esters in 2019. I gave it a solid 7.
WA-lyrical dance to This Is Me. It was a nice performance, consistent. I would give it a 6. Some of the lyrical dancers were better last night, especially NE (who I will address in a minute) and it wasn’t quite on par with that, but she looked lovely onstage.
NC-ballet dance to The Impossible Dream. I thought it was very pretty. She looked very pretty, very elegant in a white costume. It was a lovely performance. The only thing missing was a little bit more energy than I would have liked. I would put it in the 6 to 7 range.
NE-I mistakenly identified her as Alaska last night. She did a lyrical dance to Climb Every Mountain. Very well done. She is a very good dancer, it had a lot of energy to it for the slower pace of the song, her costume was very pretty, she looked quite elegant onstage. Overall I would give it a 7 but I also could justify an 8 if the judges were marking higher. This was one of my favorite performances of the night.
OR-singer/songwriter performance of If I Don’t Have You by Alicia Keys. I liked it. Of course it is difficult when you do someone iconic, but she definitely held her own. She had a lot of emotion behind the song. It didn’t “stand out” but it was consistent. 6 to 7, 7 if generous
IA-ballet dance to the famous song I don’t know the name of LOL. It was the beginning opening number of the 1991 pageant. She did it as a homage to her Iowan roots. The costume was cute, a white and purple farmgirl dress, very appropriate. Good energy with the performance. It was solid and I would give it a lower 7.
MT-opera to the Laughing Song. I have heard this song many times over at pageants, and I have heard it done to near perfection. This was just an average performance to me, I would put it in the 5 or 6 range, 6 if generous. I wasn’t blown away by it, it was just a very average opera performance.
ID-tap dance to Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. The costuming was cute, the energy just wasn’t there for me, though. 4 to 5
NY-spoken word performance about women in politics. She was very dynamic, spoke well, and had a lot of energy behind her performance. I am a fan of spoken word performances, and she was very dynamic. She wore a white pantsuit in honor of Women’s Suffrage, which I immediately recognized. As I said in an earlier post was the judges are either going to love it or hate it. They loved it. I would have given it a 9 just for the energy of it, the thoughtfulness put into the costume, and it was well received by the crowd.
MS-sang House of the Rising Sun. She was kind of like some of the other vocalists of the night. She definitely has some upper range ability and she did that well, but the lower range she was a bit pitchy and hit a few sour notes. Had she been a bit more consistent I could have seen her contending for the talent win. I would give it a lower 7 and could have been higher had she nailed it.
WI-lyrical dance to Hit Me With a Hot Note. I think it was lyrical, it might have been jazz. She did bring some energy to the performance, and she was very clean in her performance. It was consistent, she kept the same energy. I gave it a higher 7.
HI-did a traditional hula to Welcome to This Land, a Hawaiian song. It was very pretty, certainly what you would come to expect from a Miss Hawaii. I liked the energy of it-it was very pretty, she looked nice, just an overall nice performance. Lower 7 for me. It wasn’t something that would blow you out of the park just nicely done and she captured the overall vibe very well.
WV-I am not sure what category you would call this, but she did a monologue. I actually liked this much better than Wyoming’s. She was very genuine in her talk, it felt like she was connecting with the audience. She wore jeans and a Tshirt, seemed very down to earth but yet very convincing. I just was able to feel a connection to her personally, and that is I believe the point she was trying to get across. For me it was a solid 7.
MO-sang I Got A Feeling Like I Never Felt Before. Much like Mississippi’s performance, but to me her vocal ability was a little stronger. She could really hit the high notes very well. She did struggle on some of the lower range and like MS, if she had stayed right on it would have been a very powerful performance. Lower 7 based on the inconsistency of it.
KS-Did a drum solo to It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Aint Got That Swing. I loved it! I like seeing unique performances and talents. And I like to see women drummers. LOL I have had the fantasy of being one. She really had a lot of energy, a lot of fun, and she clearly loved what she was doing. It was very infectious. I couldn’t give it an 8 because I am not sure that the technical level would be that of an opera singer, but I could justify it as well. I gave it a high 7 and just absolutely loved it. You can tell that she has a passion for playing the drums.
TX-medley of fiddle songs. It was entertaining, nothing we haven’t seen before but she did it well enough. I gave it a 7 based on the energy of it, though a lower one. I wasn’t blown away by it, but the overall entertainment value was high.
And there you have it! I did give a lot of 7s and there weren’t any truly bad talents, but it wasn’t a “great” night. It usually never is at Miss America anymore, but sometimes you do get one of those nights where you are really treated to some good performances. Nobody really separated themselves but NY and MI, in my opinion.
I have to jump on a Zoom at 2 but then I will start with the SII/OSQ portions and try to make sense of it all. Look for that later this afternoon.
