Subject: SOCIAL IMPACT/ONSTAGE QUESTION/RED CARPET

I am just going to mention the ones that stood out in any way to me, whether good or bad. Mostly good. The red carpet competition is really not that glamourous because the contestants really cannot model. They walk out with a microphone in their hand and stand before the judges. I suppose that is because of COVID, and I HOPE they are not passing those microphones around. So, I guess that is why no modeling.

The Social Impact statements needs to be 60 seconds or around that. A lot of the contestants were rushing and speaking rapidly in order to make that happen. A lot of the time I felt like the contestants were trying to just get it all out in 60 seconds. Lots of statistics, etc. The onstage question is a bit different because the contestants can take their time and answer. But, both questions are about their social platforms and it was rather redundant. I really can't say who stood out in gown because nobody had a chance to really appear in gown. I like red, and some contestants had some pretty red gowns.

I am going to comment on the ones who stood out to me the most and if any of you have any questions about anyone I have not mentioned, I will answer them for you.

With the actual SII statements, the best to me in each group were NJ (first), TN (second), and UT (last.) NJ spoke about peer mentoring, TN about voting, and UT about immigration reform. UT and TN both answered their questions in a with conviction and acknowledged that they were controversial issues. Both of them said that they wanted to help people find middle ground and things they could agree on, and that it was a non-partisan issue. NJ spoke with a lot of confidence and is a very good public speaker. I expect that she interviews well. DE also stood out to me in the first group. She spoke about environmental justice and sounded very knowledgeable and confident, made a lot of sense. Some of the better answers in one or both categories were:

DC-she spoke very convincingly, she was very eloquent and had a good message
MD-she is very intelligent and a very good communicator. She also is either in the military or works at a military establishment in the capitol area and spoke very well about her earth yet very down to earth. I liked her.
MN-I wasn't wowed by her gown, but she is very intelligent and well-spoken, I think her platform was mental health
MA-she was one of the pretty red gowns that stuck out to me, she spoke very eloquently about being a first generation American and the work she did on her platform
SD-she was also very eloquent, she did in fact speak about her own mental health struggles with depression and an eating disorder. She was one of the few last night who I felt spoke "to me" rather than at me and I felt more like she was not just spouting out statistics
OK-also very good, and I liked her gown and her look in it. She also seemed very genuine and down to earth, told the story about her brother and how she helped find a Best Friends chapter in Oklahoma. She is very intelligent and a good speaker.
CO-Very humble yet intelligent, spoke about suicides and mental health in the military. I just feel like she connects very well with her platform and if I really wanted to know something about the subject, she would be someone I would want to hear talk about mental health in the military. She was good.
AK-the winner. She is very humble, down to earth, and like I said about SD-she speaks "to" you and not at you. Even though she didn't shout, ramble off statistics, she was very natural. If this is what the judges are going for, look for some very relatable women in the top 15. She wasn't who I would have picked but I can definitely see why the judges love her. AND she was just a doll after she won. She really did not seem to believe it. I would love someone that humble as Miss America.

Some contestants were a bit pageanty with the answers, but not a lot of them. FL in particular sounded pageanty and rehearsed. And I hate to say this, but IL sounded the same way and she bumbled a bit. She looks fantastic onstage and has a lot of presence, but she bumbled a bit and just sounded off. I had high hopes for her but I am not sure she did herself any favors last night. I hope her talent is good because she has a lot of presence and I would love to see her compete.

There were a few that did not resonate with me. GA in particular. I thought she was a good speaker but she did not come across well, it kind of made me uncomfortable. She started rambling about all kinds of societal problems and it did not seem compassionate, it sounded haughty. She said she chose a black and white dress because of her platform, and I can't explain it, it just really came across the complete opposite of someone like AK.
LA-She bumbled a bit. I hope this doesn't come across poorly, but her platform is called Find Your Freddy. It is about developmental disabilities. But it also sounds ripe with euphanisms and I could imagine that people who have a warped sense of humor would tear apart the name of this platform. It is fodder for late night comedians. That aside, she struggled at the end of her question.

I would summarize this by saying the contestants talk entirely too fast in the SII competition and it really is not enjoyable. Too much talk on the same questions.

So, I am going to take a break now and will be back at 7 p.m. I am keeping everything I need right by the TV because you blink you miss it. LOL if you have an active bladder, cathertize yourself because you will not be able to get away.

Until later!
