Hey everyone,

I've spent a lot of time researching and writing about Akita health, and I wanted to share a simple overview of the most important things to keep on your radar. These gentle giants typically live 10 to 14 years, and knowing what to look out for is the first step in helping them get there.

Here are four key health areas every Akita owner should understand:

1. Joints: Hip & Elbow Dysplasia
This is common in large breeds. It's a malformation of the joints that can cause arthritis and pain. The biggest things you can do are keep your dog at a healthy weight and talk to your vet about joint supplements early on.

2. Internal Health: Thyroid & Autoimmune Issues
Hypothyroidism: An underactive thyroid. Look for symptoms like unusual weight gain, lethargy, and skin problems. It's manageable with daily medication.
Sebaceous Adenitis: An autoimmune skin disease requiring lifelong management with special shampoos.
VKH Syndrome: A very serious autoimmune disease that attacks the skin and eyes. It needs immediate vet care.

3. Eyes: Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
This is an inherited disease that gradually leads to blindness. There's no cure, which is why reputable breeders test for it. Always ask for proof of OFA eye exam results when looking at a puppy.

4. The Silent Emergency: Bloat (GDV)
This is a sudden, life-threatening emergency where the stomach fills with gas and twists. Know the signs: unproductive retching, restlessness, and a swollen belly. If you see this, get to the vet immediately. Prevention is key: feed small meals and avoid exercise right after eating.

I've put all this together in a much more detailed guide, which you can find here if you want to dive deeper:

Would love to hear from other Akita owners what health practices do you swear by for your dogs?
