Auto The drive home had been long. She’d told her mom, Angelina, that’d she’d come back in the summer not now which was a few months early. Classes weren’t over till May, but she’d graduated early and so had split from the private boarding school in New York as soon as she’d been able. The drive home to Cascade had been uneventful though she’d still hoped to get at least one postcard back from Elden before she left. They’d only seen each other once on his last stay for leave; he’d been moody and far more standoffish than before, she didn’t like it. Ever since that summer when she was 15 and they’d had one major make out session he’d been pulling away from her. He’d been her first kiss, though she’d kissed others since, and he’d have been her first she was sure of it had things not ended abruptly and him shipping off to the military a few months later. She’d promised to write and he agreed to try she’d gotten a few postcards, one from the airport he’d landed at overseas and another on each of her birthdays since…nothing else. The last card, sent a year ago, was stuck in the visor of her Boss Mustang. It’d promised something more to come, but she’d checked the mail for weeks and it never came. Probably lost in transit like so many things from the war zone. The waves were choppy from what she could see, much like her mood thanks to the thoughts bouncing around in her head. Deciding it’d be a good idea to stop and stretch before heading into town to find her mother, Des pulled off the highway and towards the nearly empty parking lot. Coming for the north end, Des maneuvered her purring lime green mustang into the space two over from a rather nice looking Challenger. It had to be a ’71 from the looks of it, very nice car if she could say so herself. Putting the clutch on and killing the engine Desiree popped out of her on vehicle with a smile and ‘meet no stranger’ attitude. ”Nice wheels. Challenger, ’71 right?” She’d never told her mom or Elden that she’d stolen the magazines from the backrooms. They’d had tons of cars in them, their engines, everything you’d need to know about the classics without ever actually owning one. She’d been hooked. She couldn’t fix them, having never gotten the chance to work on the cars. Elden and Tommy had always shooed her away and Uncle Rob hadn’t been too keen on her learning either. So she’d resorted to looking up more information while at school. It’s why she’d gone with the v8 Boss over the normal preppy GT the other girls at her school wanted. Slight muscle over looks, it’d helped that it’s horsepower was one of the best of the brand. Brown strands were brushed back from vibrant brown eyes as the car was locked and she moved around the side of the mustang towards the challenger and the intimidating man on it. He was a giant and for a second she wondered what her mother would think if she was found talking to him, but a shrug and she dismissed the idea, this was Cascade there weren’t any harden criminals here…at least not anymore. It was then that she noticed the dog and guy on the beach, eyes squinting under the darkening sunlight to see who it was and recognizing the dog. ”Ice!” the voice commanding though with a smile, she’d enjoyed meeting the dog last year. She didn’t think till after she’d called that whoever was with him was Elden or that if it was he’d be upset at her yelling at his dog, he’d told her not to do that. Oh well too late now. | |
