Tarot trotted slowly after Zeth, her crimson hair hanging in her face. The tattoo on the back of her neck was naked to any prying eyes, the design vivid against the paleness of her skin. The pendant hung from the same neck, still glittering. Even the yellow, dirtied lighting of the subway could dim its sparkle. Strange. Tarot shivered and pulled it from her neck. Under her breath she murmured a quick blessing. She could see her chest where the charm had rested, but she could feel her skin blistering. Bad idea, keeping it that close to her heart.
Her bare feet were blackened with gravel dust and street debris, the golden polish on her toes chipped by the wear and tear. She felt exhausted, even though the vampire had only led her a half-mile down the road. Too much excitement, she supposed. Her heart had been weaker since the incident. Death would do that to a girl, she supposed.
Thank you. She murmured, toying with the pendant's chain. Her skin began to crawl. The deeper they wove into the spiderwebbing network of the tunnels, the more wary she became. Her daggers were in her purse and her purse was in her hotel... wherever that was. The address was on a post-it note, crumpled in one of her pockets. I apologize for causing you so much trouble, Sir. She held the necklace out before her. I can wait here until morning. Unless you do the decent thing and actually see me off to my accommodations. Keep this away from your person and, by all means, keep it from your child.
They were both cretins, as far as she could tell. But at least the father had the decency to play the gentleman.
