Next Quinn Rooney/Getty Images Australian trainer Gai Waterhouse has reason for huge celebration at this year's Melbourne Cup.

The Flemington Racecourse main event was won by Fiorente, giving the 59-year-old her first winner in the country¡¯s famous race.

As reported by BBC Sport, jockey Damien Oliver rode last year¡¯s runner-up to a memorable victory, overcoming the threat of Red Cadeaux in the process.

A huge crowd of 100,000 spectators witnessed the "race that stops a nation" live, per BBC Sport¡¯s report, Oliver¡¯s late push thrusting Fiorente over the line in a final 150m sprint that will remain in the memory for quite some time.

Let¡¯s take an in-depth look at the Emirates Melbourne Cup result and pinpoint a few highlights from Tuesday¡¯s action.

Fiorente Triumphs in Melbourne Cup

Despite taking on the tag of favourite, extreme pressure remained on Fiorente to win the Melbourne Cup with Oliver in the saddle.

The competition was fierce, signalled by two British-trained horses in Red Cadeaux and Mount Athos, both of which failed to outpace Fiorente as the race came to an end.

Ruscello set the early pace alongside Tres Blue and Mount Athos, who challenged the frontrunners throughout. While it looked as if Red Cadeaux would atone for coming second in 2011¡¯s race, Oliver confirmed a hat-trick of Melbourne Cup wins with the victory, per BBC Sport.

Oliver¡¯s turnaround was made all the more remarkable considering the jockey¡¯s recent history. He was banned from racing for 10 months after betting on a rival horse, per ABC, but was understandably jubilant at the finishing line, as noted in Scott Heinrich¡¯s report for the The Guardian:

It was amazing. A bit like having a Christmas present but not being able to open it. I was really excited to be riding this horse. He moved into the race beautifully on the turn and he was just too good for them.

As noted by David Campbell of Australia¡¯s Daily Telegraph, Waterhouse's win also marks the first time an Australian-female trained horse has captured the Melbourne Cup prize.

Elsewhere, hordes of spectators were treated to an exciting array of races taking place around the Melbourne Cup.

Oakleigh Girl ran an impressive race on her debut, the filly taking victory in the first contest of the day, per ABC.

As noted by Brad Waters of RaceNet, Wistful's performance in the TAB Rewards race banished the horse's previous failures with a well-deserved win in the second start:

Wistful was left in front when Sinhala began to tire early in the straight but the Peter Snowden-trained four-year-old sprinted strongly at the 300 metres, drawing away to beat Minnie Downs by 1-3/4 lengths while Rememba Howe finished a half-head further back.

This was followed by wins for Mujadale in the third run and Plucky Belle's victory for trainer Peter Moody, who triumphed in the Group Three competition. Bernabeu and Moderate followed suit later in the day, before Fiorente grabbed the headlines in the Melbourne Cup showdown.

After the main excitement was over, there was still enough time for Salon Soldier, Richie's Vibe and Chile Express to put their names up in lights with dominant performances.

Gabriel Marie "Gai" Waterhouse (n¨¦e Smith; born 2 September 1954) is an Australian horse trainer and businesswoman. The daughter of Tommy J. Smith, a leading trainer of Thoroughbred racehorses, Waterhouse was born in Scotland but raised in Sydney. After graduating from the University of New South Wales, she worked as an actor for a time, appearing in both Australian and English television series. Having been worked under her father for a period of 15 years, Waterhouse was granted an Australian Jockey Club (AJC) licence in 1992, and trained her first Group One (G1) winner later that year. In 1994, after her father became ill, she took over his Tulloch Lodge stable, and she has since trained over 100 G1 winners and won seven Sydney trainers' premierships. She was also the trainer of Fiorente, the winner of the 2013 Melbourne Cup, becoming the second woman (and first Australian woman) to train a winner of that race. Waterhouse was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2007, and has been described as the "first lady of Australian racing".[2]

Background and early career[edit]Waterhouse is the daughter of Tommy J. Smith MBE, a leading trainer of thoroughbred racehorses, who was based in Sydney. She was educated at the Kincoppal-Rose Bay School in Sydney, and completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of New South Wales in 1975.[3] Waterhouse made a name for herself as a model and actor, including in the Australian drama The Young Doctors before moving to England and appearing in the Doctor Who story The Invasion of Time.[4] She then returned to Australia where she served an apprenticeship under her father for fifteen years before getting her own trainer's licence.[1]

Training career[edit] This section needs additional citations for verification. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (November 2013)

Waterhouse was granted her Australian Jockey Club (AJC) licence in January 1992, although this was made difficult as her husband, Robbie Waterhouse, was banned over his involvement in the Fine Cotton scandal. AJC rules at the time stipulated that the spouse of a banned person could not be licensed, although this was subsequently overturned. Her first winner was the horse Gifted Poet in March 1992, and her first Group One winner was Te Akau Nick in the Metropolitan Handicap in October that year. After her father, T. J. Smith became ill, he passed on the Tulloch Lodge stable to her in the 1994¨C95 season.[1]

Waterhouse first achieved fame in Australia when Nothin' Leica Dane came into the Melbourne Cup in 1995 after winning the Victoria Derby three days earlier. The three-year-old colt ran second in the Melbourne Cup, a race which no three-year old had won since Skipton in 1941. During the 1996¨C97 season, she had ten Group One wins and won her first Sydney premiership. In 2001, Waterhouse trained the first, second, and third place-getters in the Golden Slipper and added the first of three successive Sydney training premierships, culminating with 156 wins in 2002/03, equalling her father's Sydney training record. In the 2004¨C05 racing season, Waterhouse had eleven Group One wins and added a fifth Sydney training premiership. As of 2010[update], the Waterhouse stable at Tulloch Lodge had won 102 Group One races.

Waterhouse's other successful horses include Golden Slipper winners Dance Hero, Ha Ha and the newly crowned 2008 Golden Slipper winner and Australian two-year old of the year, Sebring. Prolific Group One winners Grand Armee, Juggler, and All Our Mob as well as two time Epsom Handicap winner Desert War.[5][self-published source] Waterhouse also won the 2010 BMW Caulfield Cup with Descarado. In the 2012 Caulfield Guineas Waterhouse's hot favourite Pierro, undefeated in his first eight races, was beaten by All Too Hard in a major upset.[6] All Too Hard is the half-brother of star sprinter Black Caviar. In the Caulfield Cup, Waterhouse was dealt yet another blow when favourite Glencadam Gold finished 15th, nine lengths behind last year's Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden.

At the 2013 Sydney Cup day, owner John Singleton sacked Waterhouse live on television after her son Tom Waterhouse, a bookmaker, allegedly told acquaintances that Singleton's horse More Joyous would lose the All Ages Stakes, which it did. Both Gai Waterhouse and Tom Waterhouse denied any wrong doing.[7] Stewards laid two charges against Waterhouse; (1) 'fail to report to the stewards any condition or occurrence that may affect the running of a horse in a race', and (2) 'having failed to keep a record of treatments administered to a horse'.[8] On 27 May, Waterhouse was found guilty and fined A$5500.[9]

On 5 November 2013, Waterhouse won her first Melbourne Cup with Fiorente. She is the second female trainer to win the race, and the first Australian woman.[10]

Awards[edit]
Life-size bronze statue of Gai Waterhouse by sculptor Linda KlarfeldOn 30 September 2000, Waterhouse was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for "outstanding contribution to thoroughbred racing".[11] She is also an Australian Living Treasure nominated by the National Trust of Australia.[citation needed] Waterhouse was inducted into the Australian Racing's Hall of Fame in November 2007; following in the footsteps of her late father, T. J. Smith.[1]
