Virginia Tech represented the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) after winning the ACC football championship. Auburn represented the Southeastern Conference (SEC), finishing the regular season undefeated. Pre-game media coverage of the game focused on Auburn being left out of the Bowl Championship Series national championship game because of its lower ranking in the BCS poll, a point of controversy for Auburn fans and others. For Auburn, running backs Carnell Williams (pictured) and Ronnie Brown were considered among the best at their position; for Tech, senior quarterback Bryan Randall had had a record-breaking season. Both teams also had high-ranked defenses and in a defensive struggle, Auburn earned a 16–13 victory despite a late-game rally by Virginia Tech. In recognition of his game-winning performance, Auburn quarterback Jason Campbell was named the game's most valuable player. Several players from each team were selected in the 2005 NFL Draft and went on to careers in the National Football League. (Full article...) Known for such a lack of discipline that they were sometimes forcibly disarmed and worked for plunder, they were formally abandoned by the end of the 19th century. This painting by Jean-Léon Gérôme, now held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was produced after he visited Asia Minor in 1868. According to the museum, "Gérôme's virtuosic treatment of textures provides a sumptuous counterpoint to the figure’s dignified bearing". Date Posted: 02:48:32 09/15/13 Sun About the Holidays: Histories of Selected Days •April Fools' Day •Boxing Day •Father's Day •Flag Day •Groundhog Day •Labor Day •Hallowe'en •Mardi Gras (Shrove Tuesday) •Memorial Day •Mother's Day •New Year's Day •Presidents' Day •St. Valentine's Day •Thanksgiving Day •Twelfth Night •Veterans Day •Washington's Birthday April Fools' Day (April 1) (Also called All Fools' Day.) April Fools' Day seems to have begun in France in 1564. Apr 1 used to be New Year's Day but the New Year was changed to Jan 1 that year. People who insisted on celebrating the "old" New Year became known as April fools and it became common to play jokes and tricks on them. The general concept of a feast of fools is, however, an ancient one. The Romans had such a day and medieval monasteries also had days when the abbot or bishop was replaced for a day by a common monk, who would order his superiors to do the most menial or ridiculous tasks. [ Back to top] Boxing Day (Dec 26) Ordinarily observed on the first day after Christmas. A legal holiday in Canada, the United Kingdom and many other countries. Formerly (according to Robert Chambers) a day when Christmas gift boxes were "regularly expected by a postman, the lamplighter, the dustman and generally by all those functionaries who render services to the public at large, without receiving payment therefore from any individual." [ Back to top] Father's Day Recognition of the third Sunday in June as Father's Day occurred first at the request of Mrs John B. Dodd of Spokane, WA, on June 19, 1910. It was proclaimed for that date by the mayor of Spokane and recognized by the governor of Washington. The idea was publicly supported by President Calvin Coolidge in 1924, but not presidentially proclaimed until 1966. It was assured of annual recognition by Public Law 92-278 of April 1972. Also celebrated on this day in Britain. [ Back to top] Flag Day (June 14) On June 14, 1777, John Adams introduced the following resolution before the Continental Congress, meeting at Philadelphia, PA: "Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation." Presidential Proclamation issued each year for June 14. Proclamation 1335, of May 30, 1916, covers all succeeding years. Has been issued annually since 1941. (Public Law 81-203 of Aug 3, 1949.) [ Back to top] Groundhog Day (Feb 2) Old belief that if the sun shines on Candlemas Day, or if the groundhog sees his shadow when he emerges on this day, six weeks of winter will ensue. Probably inspired by the ancient Hedgehog Day (also Feb 2): Romans observed whether a hedgehog emerging from hibernation could see its shadow in the moonlight--if it could, then six more weeks of winter were expected. Later observed as a folk holiday in Europe and the British Isles. [ Back to top] Hallowe'en (Oct 31) (Also called All Hallows Eve.) An ancient celebration combining a Druid autumn festival and Christian customs. Hallowe'en is the beginning of Hallowtide, a season that embraces the Feast of All Saints (Nov 1) and the Feast of All Souls (Nov 2). The observance, dating from the sixth or seventh century, has long been associated with thoughts of the dead, spirits, witches, ghosts and devils. In fact, the ancient Celtic Feast of Samhain, the festival that marked the beginning of winter and of the New Year, was observed Nov 1. [ Back to top] Labor Day First observance was a parade on Tuesday, Sept 5, 1882, at New York, NY, probably organized by Peter J. McGuire, a Carpenters and Joiners Union secretary. In 1883 a union resolution declared "the first Monday in September of each year a Labor Day." By 1893 more than half of the states were observing Labor Day on one or another day and a bill to establish Labor Day as a federal holiday was introduced in Congress. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed into law an act making the first Monday in September a legal holiday for federal employees and the District of Columbia. Legal public holiday. Public Law 90-363 sets Labor Day on the first Monday in September. Observed in all states. Canada also celebrates Labor Day on the first Monday in September. In most other countries, Labor Day is observed May 1. [ Back to top] Mardi Gras Last feast before Lent. Although Mardi Gras ("Fat Tuesday", literally, from the French) is properly limited to Shrove Tuesday (the day before the Christian observance of Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent), it has come to be popularly applied to the preceding two weeks of celebration. Celebrated especially at New Orleans, LA, Mobile, AL, and certain Mississippi and Florida cities. [ Back to top] Memorial Day An occasion for honoring those who have died in battle. Also known as Decoration Day because of the tradition of decorating the graves of servicepeople. The observance dates from the Civil War years in US: first documented observance was at Waterloo, NY, May 5, 1866. Legal public holiday. (Public Law 90-363 sets Memorial Day on last Monday in May. Applicable to federal employees and District of Columbia.) [ Back to top] Mother's Day Observed first in 1907 at the request of Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, PA, who asked her church to hold a service in memory of all mothers on the anniversary of her mother's death. In 1909, two years after her mother's death, Jarvis and friends began a letter-writing campaign to create a Mother's Day observance. Congress passed legislation in 1914 designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Some say the predecessor of Mother's Day was the ancient spring festival dedicated to mother goddesses: Rhea (Greek) and Cybele (Roman). [ Back to top] New Year's Day (Jan 1) First day of the first month of the Gregorian calendar year. New Year's Day is a public holiday in the US and in many other countries. Traditionally, it is a time for personal stocktaking, for making resolutions for the coming year and sometimes for recovering from the festivities of New Year's Eve. Financial accounting begins anew for businesses and individuals whose fiscal year is the calendar year. Jan 1 has been observed as the beginning of the year in most English-speaking countries since the British Calendar Act of 1751, prior to which the New Year began Mar 25 (approximating the vernal equinox). New Year's Day has been called "Everyman's Birthday," and in some countries a year is added to everyone's age Jan 1 rather than on the anniversary of each person's birth. [ Back to top] Presidents' Day Not a legal public holiday. Presidents' Day observes the birthdays of George Washington (Feb 22) and Abraham Lincoln (Feb 12). With the adoption of the Monday Holiday Law (which moved the observance of George Washington's birthday from Feb 22 to the third Monday in February), some of the specific significance of the event was lost and added impetus was given to the popular description of that holiday as Presidents' Day. Present usage often regards Presidents' Day as a day to honor all former presidents of the US, though the federal holiday is still Washington's Birthday. Annually, the third Monday in February. (See "Washington's Birthday"). [ Back to top] St. Valentine's Day (Feb 14) St. Valentine's Day celebrates the feasts of two Christian martyrs of this name. One, a priest and physician, was beaten and beheaded on the Flaminian Way at Rome, Italy, Feb 14, AD 269, during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Another Valentine, the Bishop of Terni, is said to have been beheaded, also on the Flaminian Way at Rome, Feb 14 (possibly in a later year). Both history and legend are vague and contradictory about details of the Valentines and some say that Feb 14 was selected for the celebration of Christian martyrs as a diversion from the ancient pagan observance of Lupercalia. An old legend has it that birds choose their mates on Valentine's Day. Now it is one of the most widely observed unofficial holidays. It is an occasion for the exchange of gifts (usually books, flowers or sweets) and greeting cards with affectionate or humorous messages. [ Back to top] Thanksgiving Day The first US holiday by presidential proclamation: President George Washington proclaimed Nov 26, 1789, to be Thanksgiving Day. Both Houses of Congress, by their joint committee, had requested him to recommend "a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity to peaceably establish a form of government for their safety and happiness." Proclamation issued Oct 3, 1789. Next proclaimed by President Lincoln in 1863 for the last Thursday in November. In 1939 President Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to the fourth Thursday in November. [ Back to top] Twelfth Night (Jan 5) The evening before Epiphany in the Christian calendar. Twelfth Night marks the end of medieval Christmas festivities and the end of Twelfthtide (the 12-day season after Christmas ending with Epiphany). Also called Twelfth Day Eve. [ Back to top] Veterans Day (Nov 11) Veterans Day was observed on Nov 11 from 1919 through 1970. Public Law 90{-}363, the "Monday Holiday Law," provided that, beginning in 1971, Veterans Day would be observed on "the fourth Monday in October." This movable observance date, which separated Veterans Day from the Nov 11 anniversary of WWI Armistice, proved unpopular. State after state moved its observance back to the traditional Nov 11 date, and finally Public Law 94-97 of Sept 18, 1975, required that, effective Jan 1, 1978, the observance of Veterans Day revert to Nov 11. As Armistice Day this is a holiday in Belgium, France and other European countries. "At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" fighting ceased in World War I. [ Back to top] Washington's Birthday First president of the US ("First in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen" in the words of Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee). Born at Westmoreland County, VA, Feb 22, 1732 (New Style). However, the Julian (Old Style) calendar was still in use in the colonies when he was born and the year began in March, so the date on the calendar when he was born was Feb 11, 1731. He died at Mount Vernon, VA, Dec 14, 1799. Legal public holiday (Public Law 90-363 sets Washington's birthday observance on the third Monday in February each year--applicable to federal employees and to the District of Columbia). Observed in all states. [ Back to top] |

| Subject: INFORMATION ABOUT HOW HOLIDAYS & OBSERVANCES GET STARTED | |
|
Author: Chase's Calendar of Events requires (it's free btw) to be listed in their book; [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 02:35:48 09/15/13 Sun INFORMATION ABOUT HOW HOLIDAYS & OBSERVANCES GET STARTED and HOW TO START ONE YOURSELF By Brownielocks Through the years, I've been asked how these holidays and observances all get started. And, I also get asked how someone can create one and also be listed on my site. Below is what I know about this topic and also what I require in order to be listed on my "Official" holidays and observances listing. 1. Holidays or Observances are started by the President of the United States as a proclamation. 2. Holidays or Observances are started by an act of the U.S. Congress as resolution # ___. 3. Holidays and Observances can be started by individual US State legislatures and/or Governors. 4. Holidays and Observances can be started as cultural traditions or due to some historical event. An example is St. Patrick's Day (Irish culture) or Patriot's Day (September 11). They are also started based on a religious belief. Examples are Christmas, Ramadan and Hannukah. 5. Observances can also be started based on someone's date of birth or date of death. This can either be based on their life or something that they invented or accomplished. An example is Tolkien Day or Morse Code Day. NOTE: Not every famous person's birthday or death date is an observance! 6. Observances can also be started by organizations (profit or non-profit). 7. Observances are also started by commercial companies, and are usually publicized on their websites or on television. An example was "Potty Dance Day" that we just had in 2011 by Huggies diapers. 8. Observances are also started by individuals! This is the one that most of you are interested in learning about. Let me first of all explain the difference between, "create" and "think of." Lots of us can think of lots of fun things to observe daily. But, that doesn't make them "official" and valid to be listed on my website. Why not? Well, for one thing.... if I listed every observance someone wrote to me that they thought was a cool, fun idea, I'd have hundreds of thousands of listings! Imagine getting 10+ emails a day from people all over the world coming up with observances that they thought of to put on my site that were fun? I'd be boggled! And, all that they'd be doing is creating something for a wee bit of attention and let's say their 15 minutes of fame on the internet. But, they have absolutely no intention of taking any responsibility for their observance idea at all. So, this leads me to this question everyone asks,.... "How can I get an observance listed on your website, Brownielocks?" Answer: It's got to be validated! And, to do that I require a few things. First, I'd like to know the origin of it. And, by doing that I usually require that an observance be listed in the Chase's Calendar of Events or that it has an official website dedicated to it. This, "We don't know how this observance began" doesn't cut it on my site. Otherwise, it could just be made up by someone for attention or to fill in a blank day. And, the second most commonly asked question is.... "How can I get an observance that I have an idea for started and listed on your website, Brownielocks?" Answer: It has to go beyond the idea phase. If you want to create an observance, then you have to be willing to take some responsibility for it other than having me list it and thus, via second-hand, validate it for you. I'm not going to do that! To be valid and also listed on my website you are either going to have to fill out the application that Chase's Calendar of Events requires (it's free btw) to be listed in their book; or, spend a little time and money and create a website for your observance with all its information. (A little tip is to make your domain name the same as your observance. It will show up better on search engines.) I do not count free domains like blogs or Facebook pages as official observance websites! Nor do I count forums saying something is an observance. Rumors are not validation! Or if 10 websites say it is. After all, wrong information does get around on the net. In order to get into Chase's Calendar of Events, you need to write them for an application. Here is the address: Chases Calendar of Events, Editor McGraw-Hill Publishing Company Suite 900 130 East Randolph Street Chicago, Illinois 60601 The deadline is always tax day, April 15, in order to make it into their book that year. After that date, your observance will be listed in next year's book. They also do not approve of everything that's submitted. They know when kids are trying to goof around or get attention. When my visitors write and let me know about a valid observance that I don't have, they usually also send me a validation link to the originator of the observance or the factual data that proves it. My listings are very helpful for a lot of people who use them to plan school lessons, crafts, write stories, club activities, etc. And, as such, I think it's only fair that they do not waste their time dealing with observances that are bogus and not valid. So, this is why I am a bit fussy about what I list on my site and ask that you prove to me an observance is legit before I list it. I know people like fun. And, they want to hear about the fun holidays more than the serious ones. But, I prefer not to flimflam my visitors for the sake of entertainment, smiles or even hits. So, if you know of a valid observance that I don't have listed, you're always free to write and let me know about it. My email address is on the front page of my website, near the bottom. It's not a link due to spam spiders so you'll have to type it in. Thanks for visiting my site and enjoy today. I'm sure it's got something to celebrate! Name Yom Kippur Yom Kippur 2013 Saturday, September 14, 2013 Yom Kippur 2014 Saturday, October 4, 2014 Note: Jewish holidays begin at sundown the day before the date specified for the holiday. List of dates for other yearsYom Kippur is a Jewish holiday known as the Day of Atonement. Many Jewish people in Australia spend the day fasting and praying. Its theme centers on atonement and repentance. Yom Kippur is on the 10th day of the month of Tishrei (or Tishri) in the Jewish calendar. Many Jewish Australians believe that God seals their fate for the coming year on Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur involves fasting, praying and reflection. Some people perform the Kaparot (or Kaparoth) ritual before Yom Kippur. It is a form of atonement and is made using chickens or money. Many Jewish people spend time in the synagogue on this sacred holiday. The fasting lasts for 25 hours and begins on the evening before Yom Kippur. It ends after nightfall on Yom Kippur. Some restrictions can be lifted when a threat of health or life is involved. Many Jewish communities recite Birkath Hallebanah (the blessing for the moon) prior to Yom Kippur and not after the fast. There are various reasons for this: one of them being the tendency of some congregations to rush it in order to get home. Moreover, Birkath Hallebanah is usually recited after one has tasted some food. Other activities include avoiding perfume, not washing and not wearing leather shoes. Some Jewish Australians may take time off work during this time of the year, as the general restrictions on work, as described for the Sabbath, apply on Yom Kippur. Public life Yom Kippur is not a federal public holiday in Australia. However, many Jewish businesses, organizations and schools may be closed on this holiday and the streets around synagogues may be busy. Background Yom Kippur is often considered the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Yom Kippur’s origins lie in a ritual purification of the Temple in Jerusalem from any accidental ritual impurities that had occurred in the past year. The Kohen Gadol (high priest) entered the Holy of Holies at the center of the temple on Yom Kippur. It was important that he was spiritually and physically as pure as possible. Many rituals were carried out to ensure that the Kohen Gadol was pure and that he did not carry any ritual impurities into the Holy of Holies. Yom Kippur became a more somber holiday after the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed. The Torah calls the day Yom HaKippurim and Leviticus 23:27 decrees a strict prohibition of work and affliction of the soul upon the 10th day of the seventh month, known as Tishrei. Symbols It is customary to wear white on Yom Kippur, which symbolizes purity and calls to mind the promise that one’s sins should be wiped away. Some people of Jewish faith also believe that humans are compared to angels on this day. It is customary to not wear gold jewelry as gold serves as a reminder of sins associated with the golden calf, a story passed down among the Jewish community. Many Jewish men wear a kittel or sargenes and a tallit on Yom Kippur. A kittel is a simple white robe that is also used as a shroud and is worn by bridegrooms in some Jewish communities. A tallit (tallis, taleysm) is a prayer shawl with tzitzis strings tied through each of the four corners. Date Posted: 21:57:27 09/12/13 Thu Rosh Hashana in Australia Quick Facts Rosh Hashana, also spelled Rosh Hashanah, is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. The event begins on the first day of Tishrei (or Tishri), which is the seventh month in the Jewish calendar. Name Rosh Hashana Rosh Hashana 2013 Thursday, September 5, 2013 Rosh Hashana 2014 Thursday, September 25, 2014 Note: Jewish holidays begin at sundown the day before the date specified for the holiday. List of dates for other yearsMany Jewish Australians celebrate Rosh Hashana (or Rosh Hashanah), which is also known as the Jewish New Year. Rosh Hashana starts on the first day of Tishrei (or Tishri), which is the seventh month in the Jewish calendar, and may last for two days. It is sometimes called the Day of Remembrance or the Day of the Sounding of the Shofar. Apples, pomegranates and honey are traditional foods eaten during Rosh Hashana. ©iStockphoto.com/Shmulitk What do people do? Rosh Hashana (Rosh Hashanah) is one of the holiest days of the year for many Jewish Australians. It is known as the New Year in the Jewish calendar. Some Jewish communities celebrate the event for two days, while others celebrate it for one day. Rosh Hashana differs to the New Year in the Gregorian calendar (January 1) in that Rosh Hashana is a time when God reviews and judges a person's deeds in the past year, according to Jewish belief. It is also a time to look ahead with hope, and for personal growth and reflection. It is also customary for some people to visit deceased loved ones at cemeteries on the eve of the holiday. Many Jewish families gather for special meals to celebrate Rosh Hashana, which commences at nightfall the day before the actual holiday. The celebrations begin after the evening prayer, when family and friends join in to reflect on the past and make a fresh start for the New Year. The challah bread, pomegranates, and apples dipped in honey, and carrot stew are popular dishes during Rosh Hashana. Some people eat fish during Rosh Hashana, while others abstain from fish. Many Jewish Australians spend their time in the synagogue at some stage during Rosh Hashanah. The shofar is blown like a trumpet in the synagogue during this time of the year. Another activity that occurs during Rosh Hashana is performing the casting ritual (tashlikh), which involves reciting prayers near naturally flowing water and “throwing sins away” (for example, in the form of bread pieces). Some people of Jewish faith may take the day off work or organize time off during this time of the year, to observe the belief that no work is permitted on Rosh Hashanah. Public life Rosh Hashana is not a federal public holiday in Australia. However, many Jewish organizations may be closed or have restricted opening hours on Rosh Hashana. Background Rosh Hashana (or Rosh Hashanah) marks the beginning of the Jewish New Year and covers two of the 10 High Holy days that conclude with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Some sources say that the early Jewish calendar had four New Years, corresponding the seasons, with Rosh Hashana being one of the New Years. Festivals to mark the beginning of a new year in the fall have been held since the earliest days of the Israelites. These took the form of prayers of thanks for the grain harvest. The custom of blowing trumpets on the 10th day of the month of Tishrei is first described in the vision of Ezekiel, a prophet who lived sometime around 600–500 BCE. This custom has continued into modern times. Jewish Australians across the country celebrate Rosh Hashana each year. Judaism came to Australia with the first European settlers in the nation. The 2006 Australian census recorded nearly 89,000 people of Jewish faith in Australia, which was an increase of nearly six percent since the 2001 Australian census. Symbols The challah bread, which is eaten during Rosh Hashana, symbolizes the continuity of life. The apples that are dipped in honey symbolize sweetness and good health throughout the New Year. Some people also eat fish heads, which symbolize their desire to be on top, not the bottom, of life in the New Year. Pomegranates symbolize an abundance of goodness and happiness. The shofar reminds people of Jewish faith that God allowed Abraham to sacrifice a ram instead of Abraham’s son, Isaac. The tashlikh is an act that symbolizes throwing one’s sins in the water, so people believe that they are freed from their sins. At 40, he was one of the oldest members of the crew and was regarded as somewhat odd and unrefined, but was highly respected as a carpenter. He was responsible for much of the work that ensured the crew's survival after their ship, the Endurance, was destroyed when it became trapped in pack ice in the Weddell Sea. He modified the small boat, James Caird, that allowed Shackleton and five men (including McNish) to make a voyage of hundreds of miles to fetch help for the rest of the crew. He briefly refused to follow orders on the crew's long trek pulling the boats across the pack ice, and, despite his efforts during the journey, was one of only four of the crew not to receive the Polar Medal. After the expedition he returned to work in the Merchant Navy and eventually emigrated to New Zealand, where he worked on the docks in Wellington until ill-health forced his retirement. He died destitute in the Ohiro Benevolent Home in Wellington. McNish Island, which lies in the approaches to King Haakon Bay, South Georgia, was named in his honour. (Full article...) Normally Svetambara Jains refer it as Paryushana, while Digambara Jains refer it as Das Lakshana. Paryushan means, literally, "abiding" or "coming together". It is believed that all the devas do Ashtprakari Puja of Tirthankara and it takes them 8 days to do this ashtaprakari puja. This is called Ashtanhika Mahotsav, so at the very same time Jains celebrate it as Paryushan. It is also a time when the laity take on vows of study and fasting with a spiritual intensity similar to temporary monasticism.[1][2] The duration of Paryusana is for 8 or 10 days and comes at the time when the wandering monks take up temporary residence for four months of monsoon. In popular terminology, this stay is termed chaturmasa because the rainy season is regarded to be about four months. For this minimum duration, Paryushana must be initiated by Panchami (fifth day) of the Shukla Paksha phase of the Bhadrapada month. In the scriptures it is described that Lord Mahavira used to start Paryushana on Bhadrapada pak sha panchami. After Mahavir, nearly 150 years Jain Samvatsari was shifted to Chaturthi (4th day of Bhadrapada of Shukla phase. Since 2200 years Jains follows Chaturthi. The date for the Paryushana festival is thus Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi for both major sects. Because of computational and other differences, there can be some minor differences among various subsects. Recently there has been an attempt to standardize the date. Because at this time the monks have settled in the town for a longer duration, it is time for the householders to have an annual renewal of the faith by listening to the statement of the Dharma and by meditation and vratas (self-control). In the Digambaras, it is done by starting a 10-day period from Paryushana (Bhadrapada Shukla panchami) during which the dashalakshana vrata is undertaken. In the Shvetambaras an 8-day festival is celebrated that ends with Bhadrapada Shukla chaturthi. The last day is called Samvatsari, short for Samvatsari Pratikramana. During the 8-day festival, the Kalpa Sutra is recited in the Swetmbara sect, that includes a recitation of the section on birth of Lord Mahavira on the fifth day.[2] In the Digambara sect the Tatvartha-sutra of Umaswati is recited. On the dashami, the sugandha-dashami vrata occurs. The Digambaras celebrate Ananta-chaturdashi on the chaturdashi, special worship is done on this day. Many towns have a procession leading to the main temple. The original Prakrit (ardhamagadhi) term for Paryushana is "Pajjo-savana". In the case of Jain terms, the Prakrit forms of the words are the original. Contents [hide] 1 Observances 1.1 Fasting 1.2 Pratikramana (Samayika): Renewal meditation 1.3 Requesting Forgiveness 2 Dashlakshana Vrata 3 Photo gallery 4 See also 5 References 6 Notes Observances[edit source | editbeta]Fasting[edit source | editbeta]Most of the Jains observe fast and Ekasan (meal/boiled water once in a day) and soak themselves in the rituals associated with the event and try to ready themselves for a virtuous life. The span of the fast could be anything between a day and 30 days or even more. In the Digambar sect, Shravakas do not take food and/or water (boiled) more than once in a day when observing fasts, while those of the Swetambar sect observing a fast survive on boiled water, which is consumed only between sunrise and sunset.[3] Jainism discourages fasting in diabetics, pregnant women, other patients taking medications. Please consult your doctor before any fasting, as fasting can interfere with health in aforementioned cases. Pratikramana (Samayika): Renewal meditation[edit source | editbeta] Das Lakshana (Paryusana) celebrations, Jain Center of America, New York City.On all the eight/ten days, Jains begin their day with ‘pratikraman’ at 5.45 in the morning, followed by prayers for promoting universal peace and brotherhood.[3] Pratikramana means turning back. It is a form of meditation, called Samayika where one reflects on his spiritual journey and renews his faith. For both Swetambaras and Digambaras, it takes the form of periodic meditation. The period can be twice daily (morning and evening), once every lunar phase, every four months, or every year. The annual Pratikramana in some form is the minimum for a Sravaka. The annual Pratikramana is Samvatsari Pratikramana, in short Samvatsari. Since it coincides with Paryushana, the terms "Samvatsari" and "Paryushana" are sometimes used interchangeably. Pratikramana includes six avasyakas or essentials: samayika: to stay in equanimity by withdrawing to the self. Chauvisantho or Prayers to the Five Supremes, 24 Jinas and the 4 mangalas, including the Dharma as presented by the ancient Masters.| Vandana or Prayer to the Master(Guru) or the Deity. Pratikramana or reflections on vratas and past transgressions. Kayotsarga: detachment from the body by controlling it. Pratyakhyan: making resolutions or vows. The detailed recommended procedure can be found in the handbooks. Detailed Pratikramana takes about 3 hours, however all essentials can be done in a much shorter time if needed. Pratikramana is also sometimes termed Samayika in the Digambara tradition. By tradition certain postures are recommended for Pratikramana. Requesting Forgiveness[edit source | editbeta]See also: Micchami Dukkadam and Kshamavani At the conclusion of the festival, the Sravakas request each other for forgiveness for all offenses committed during the last year.[3] This occurs on the Paryusha day for the Swetambara and on Pratipada (first) of Ashwin Krashna for the Digambara. Forgiveness is asked by telling "Micchami Dukkadam" or "Uttam Kshama" to each other. It means "If I have caused you offence in any way, knowingly or unknowingly, in thought word or deed, then I seek your forgiveness".[4] Dashlakshana Vrata[edit source | editbeta]These are the ten Lakshan of Dharma: Uttam Kshama (forbearance), Uttam Mardava (gentleness), Uttam Aarjava (uprightness), Uttam Satya (truth), Uttam Shauch (purity), Uttam Sanyam (restraint), Uttam Tap (austerity), Uttam Tyaga (renunciation), Uttam Aakinchanya (lack of possession) and Uttam Brahmcharya (chastity), as described by Acharya Umaswami in Tattvartha Sutra. In the full form, it is a 10 day vrata that comes every year. It may be undertaken during Shukla Panchami to Chaturdashi of Bhadrapada, Magh or Chaitra months. However it is common to do it during Bhadrapada. |

The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 140.62 points, or 0.9%, to 15063.12 Monday. The S&P 500-stock index rose 16.54 points, or 1%, to 1671.71, with all 10 sectors higher. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 46.17 points, or 1.3%, to 3706.18. Stock benchmarks rallied after China reported a pickup in exports in August and news from Syria helped calm investor jitters about potential military action in the region. But trading volumes were light, said Doug Crafton, managing director of cash equities for Bank of America Merrill Lynch. "We'd like to see more volume on a move like this to get a bit more conviction," he said. Mr. Crafton said that investors were caught chasing the day's gains, and those that had bet stocks would see broader losses were forced to cover their positions as the market rose. "People were looking for a pullback, but they're not getting it, so they're forced to pay up," he said. Strong data out of China helped spark early gains. The country reported that exports rose 7.2% in August from a year earlier, a fresh sign of resilience from the world's second-biggest economy. "It seems like the Chinese export engine is gearing up a little bit," said Paul Zemsky, chief investment officer overseeing about $25 billion in multiasset strategies at ING U.S. Investment Management. Mr. Zemsky said that data on overseas growth have been key recently, since large U.S. companies get a significant chunk of sales from international markets. The materials sector, seen as closely tied to commodities demand from China, led the S&P 500, rallying 1.5%. Industrials shares, also seen as linked to the region's economy, were up 1.2%. Meanwhile, political tension around Syria, which has prompted sharp market moves in recent weeks, continued to subside. A Russian official showed signs of a rare agreement between the Russian and U.S. governments, urging Syria to destroy its chemical weapons. Syria said it welcomed a Russian proposal to put its chemical weapons under international control, without indicating whether it would comply. Also helping prop up stocks was speculation that the Federal Reserve won't severely scale back stimulus measures this month. On Friday, the government's closely watched jobs report showed fewer jobs were created in August than expected, and figures from previous months were revised sharply lower. Monday's U.S. economic calendar was nearly bare. Consumer credit for July increased by $10.4 billion, compared with expectations of a $14 billion rise. In corporate news, technology shares also gave stock benchmarks a boost, rising 1.3% as heavyweight Apple rallied 1.6%. The company is expected to unveil two new iPhones this week and is preparing to ship iPhones to China Mobile, China's largest wireless carrier. Delta Air Lines gained 9.4% after S&P Dow Jones Indices said late Friday it was adding the air carrier's stock to the S&P 500 after Tuesday's close. On international markets, European indexes were mostly lower with the Stoxx Europe 600 down 0.1% and snapping a three-session winning streak. Asian markets rallied, highlighted by a 3.4% surge in China's Shanghai Composite to a three-month high. Analysts said China's market may extend gains as investors pin hopes on a brighter economic outlook following the release of stronger-than-expected exports and subdued inflation. They pegged immediate resistance for the Shanghai index at 2250. "Upbeat economic indicators will underpin the rebound in the stock markets with the release of more encouraging data, such as investment and industrial output, due this week," said Zhang Haidong, an analyst with Tebon Securities. Tokyo stocks surged to a one-month high as shares in Olympics-related sectors gained after Tokyo won the right to host the 2020 Summer Games and confidence in the economic recovery grew following an upward revision to Japan's gross domestic product. Traders expect the immediate psychological lift from the Olympics will last at least a month, before a decision on a controversial sales tax plan takes central stage. The faster-than-thought growth in the second quarter is seen as favoring the implementation of the tax plan. "Although profit-taking may drag down share prices, the psychological impact of the Olympics could push the Nikkei above 15,000 by the beginning of October," said Haruhiko Kuramochi, strategist at Mizuho Securities. Others said the positive effects of the Olympics will continue to be felt for the next six years as Olympics-related projects benefit individual shares. "News such as infrastructure-related projects related to preparation for the Olympics will likely move individual shares that are beneficiaries of those projects," said Kenichi Hirano, operating officer at Tachibana Securities. Fund managers and strategists also noted that the Olympics will provide a tailwind for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's reflationary policies and structural reforms. "The Olympics will make it easier for Mr. Abe to move forward with his growth strategies, the implementation of a consumption tax hike and corporate tax cuts," said Mitsushige Akino, fund manager at Ichiyoshi Asset Management. Hong Kong shares lagged the rally across Asia's major markets as uncertainty over when the Federal Reserve would taper its bond-buying program weighed on interest-rate sensitive utility and property stocks. "In the short term, the HSI may have the chance to hit resistance at 23,000 but it really depends on the U.S. market performance this week," said Castor Pang, head of research at Core Pacific Yamaichi. Oil futures fell Monday as the White House and Russia called on Syria to turn over its chemical weapons supply, amid reports that several U.S lawmakers oppose a potential military strike against the country. Gold futures settled near unchanged as traders remained on the sidelines given the absence of definitive news about Syria. Base metals on the London Metal Exchange closed mostly lower Monday, holding narrow ranges as investors waited for further clues about the future of U.S. economic stimulus, while copper found support from Chinese macroeconomic data. FOREX: The dollar fell against the euro and a host of emerging market currencies Monday as investors prepare for the possibility the Federal Reserve may not follow through with a decisive pullback from its bond-buying program later this month. Following an employment report Friday that showed the U.S. economy added slightly fewer jobs in August than economists were expecting, investors began reassessing their view on when the Fed will begin to taper its monetary stimulus programs. Traders had speculated that U.S. policy makers might begin to scale back the program as early as its meeting scheduled for next week. But signs the economy may not be growing as quickly as previously thought have cast doubts on whether the Fed will act, and by how much the bond buying will be reduced. That prompted investors to sell the dollar and move into the euro as well as higher-yielding currencies such as the Australian dollar and currencies from emerging markets. The bond-buying program is designed to keep interest rates in the U.S. low to spur the economy, and any delay in tapering the program may mean rates will stay low for a longer period, diminishing the appeal of owning the dollar. "The market's bias was the be long dollars looking for the Fed tapering to begin in September," said Matt Perrier, managing director of foreign exchange sales at BMO Capital Markets. "The percentage chance of that happening has been pared back." The dollar's drop pushed the euro up to $1.3254 late Monday from $1.3181, according to EBS via CQG. The dollar also fell against the Swiss franc, to CHF0.9324 from CHF0.9378. And the U.S. currency weakened versus the Australian dollar, which rose to $0.9228 from $0.9185. Against the yen, the dollar was at Y99.57 from Y99.13. The Wall Street Journal Dollar Index, which tracks the U.S. dollar against a basket of currencies, was at 74.050 from 74.261. The Aussie briefly touched its strongest level since late July after a report showed a rising trade surplus in China, which is a top customer for Australia's exports of iron ore and coal. "Another focus for FX markets today is better-than-expected Chinese external trade data, a factor that is likely contributing in part to the gains in the Australian and New Zealand dollars," noted Nick Bennenbroek, head of currency strategy at Wells Fargo. The Aussie was also bolstered by a strong report on its domestic housing sector, and by Tony Abbott's election as prime minister at the head of the Australia's Liberal-National coalition on Saturday. The euro strengthened against the yen after the Bank of France reported a rise in its business sentiment index. The common currency was at Y131.95 from Y130.61. The U.K. pound was at $1.5700 from $1.5630. BONDS: U.S. Treasury prices rose Monday, extending gains into a second-straight day after a tepid jobs report Friday raised new questions about the country's economic strength and upended positions in the safe-haven market. It was noted that the VIX is up 40% since mid-August. It was also noted that VIX over 17 was even more impressive since it rallied in the face of a three day weekend. My thought is sometimes that is the norm, but when you have a three day weekend when the US is considering bombing a new country in the Middle East elevated VIX should be no surprise. The first trade centers on protecting a portfolio in front of three risks to the markets (Syria, Tapering, Debt Ceiling). A 20% drop in the S&P 500 is the benchmark for a market being in a bear phase. Today we celebrate the American worker and we honor the tradition of hard work that built this nation. America’s economic leadership in the world is a testament to our workforce – in the fields, factories, offices, schools all across the country. Labor day is about paying tribute to what makes our nation great: the determination, innovation, and ingenuity of hardworking Americans. Let’s honor them as we enjoy this day. But today we’re also thinking about the millions of Americans who want to work but can’t find a job – and those who want to be employed but can only secure part time work. Sadly, the job-killing policies of an overgrown federal government have made it harder for these Americans. As Republicans, we believe in unlimited opportunity for everyone – it starts with a quality education, and means being able to find a good job. Let’s dedicate ourselves to expanding job opportunities for all Americans. On Labor Day and every day, that’s what we’re fighting for. This parrotfinch is a small, mainly green bird with a red head and tail and a stubby dark grey bill. It is found in both forested and open habitats, and has adapted well to man-made environments such as grasslands, pasture and gardens. Pairs have a courtship display in which they fly above the trees in an undulating flight, calling constantly. Breeding birds build a domed grass nest with a side entrance, and lay a clutch normally of four white eggs. The Fiji Parrotfinch eats seeds, especially of grasses, but also readily feeds on insects and nectar. It forms small flocks of up to six individuals after the breeding season. Parrotfinches may be predated by indigenous birds of prey such as the endemic Fiji Goshawk, or by introduced mammals like the small Asian mongoose, rats and mice, and they may be susceptible to disease. Nevertheless, the Fiji species, despite being both uncommon and endemic to one island group, appears to be stable in numbers. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, and it is protected under Fijian law. (Full article...) The All Ordinaries Index (XAO) added 52.7pts or 1.03 per cent by close to 5178. Energy stocks were among the best performers. In late afternoon trade, the Nymex crude oil contract continued to ease and was buying US$106.28 a barrel. Yet Caltex (CTX) shares rallied by 4.8 per cent to $19.81 and shares in Santos (STO) were firmer by 1.5 per cent to $15.14. Financial stocks also enjoyed a solid run, with the overall sector up 1 per cent. One of the market’s best performers was troubled surfwear retailer Billabong (BBG). BBG shares rose 14.1 per cent to 48.5c after New York based hedge fund Coastal Capital International, which holds a 5% stake in the company, called for the removal of BBG’s company directors. CCI indicated it wanted to ditch and replace the majority of BBG’s boards apart from founder Gordon Merchant and majority shareholder Colette Paul. In local economic news today, the national average Australian price of unleaded petrol rose by 4.1 cents per litre to 153.3 cents a litre in the week to September 1. Juliette Saly CommSec Market Analyst MID-SESSION REPORT (12.30pm AEST) The Australian market has shrugged off the weakness from global markets on Friday, with the All Ordinaries Index (XAO) up 0.7 per cent. Some better than expected signs for China’s manufacturing sector on Sunday are helping lift equities at lunch. The XAO remains well above 5100.0pts. With the profit reporting season out of the way, investor attention has shifted to uncertainty in Syria, the closure of US markets tonight (labor day holiday) and Chinese data out over the past few days. The federal election this Saturday will be the highlight event. The big banks are the biggest contributors to the improvements, with the four majors accounting for 13pts of the 35pt improvement so far today. Westpac (WBC) is up 1.3 per cent. The mining stocks are mixed, with Rio Tinto (RIO) an outperformer. RIO has loaded its first ship from its 290Mt/a expansion program in Western Australian.
