I love finding new and exciting places for the family to visit and want to share them with you. I hope you find it interesting and add it to the 'like' list. Event: 08/11/2013 - 31/12/2013The most iconic Christmas event in Melbourne Picture from www.myer.com.aularge image The iconic Myer Melbourne store is set for its 58th year of the traditional Myer Christmas Windows with the unveiling of this year's theme on Friday 8th of November 2013. Night Photography Workshop for Beginners Saturday, 7th of December @ 05:30pm - $99 - 4 places leftJoin Jennifer Hawkins and Lauren Phillips as they await Santa's arrival for the 12pm unveiling of the animated Myer windows. Each year Myer dresses its Bourke St windows with animated Christmas displays as a gift to the City of Melbourne and the people of the City show their appreciation by turning up in the thousands, waiting in queues up to a few hours to get a glimpse of these famous windows that house the amazing Christmas displays. In fact these windows have a reported average of 1 million people coming from all over Australia and the world to see the famous Christmas windows each year. Work on the displays start 6 months before we get to see them, with people working on them in studios and factories to have them ready for the unveiling. The theme of the windows is always a top secret until they are revealed to the public. Each of the windows have a different scene of the chosen theme. Picture from www.bubsonthemove.comlarge image Some of the previous themes were taken from story books, nursery rhymes, film or theatre and have included The 12 Days of Christmas, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, Wizard of Oz, Seven Dwarves, Snuggle Pot and Cuddle Pie and A Christmas Carol to mention just a few of the previous displays. Each of the windows display a continuing scene of the chosen theme that isn't revealed until the unveiling. The first Myer Christmas windows display was Santa and the Olympics in 1956 (which was the same year that Melbourne hosted the Olympic games and television was introduced to Melbourne). For the full list of displays since, click here. Christmas train in Myer large image Last year we visited and the queues were three deep with security guards making sure nobody skipped the queue. After watching for a few moments we decided to take the children up to Level 6 within Myer to visit Santa and take a ride on the train. The children loved it and was nice to escape from the crowds. My tip would be to go in the 'off peak' times (either early or late) which admittedly is difficult with young children. Santa takes some getting used to large image Christmas in the city is a very special time of year as decorations line the streets, Christmas trees glowing, fairy lights shining, sounds of carols playing, shop front displays with shiny gift boxes and tissue paper; these are a few of the very special things. Date Posted: 05:04:23 11/08/13 Fri Will Twitters IPO fly like Google or crash like Facebook?Colin Cieszynski, General, Stocks, USA 07/11/2013 - 12:29 pm (AEST) - Colin CieszynskiAhead of Twitter launching their IPO today, Ive taken a look at how Twitter can avoid making the same mistakes as Facebook, and alleviate the post-IPO tech trading curse. This post looks at: Whether Twitter can avoid a disaster by choosing a different exchange (NYSE instead of NASDAQ) and by pricing at a lower valuation than Facebook did An analysis of previous high profile technology IPOs including, Google and LinkedIn Whether Twitter can shake off the curse of post-IPO tech trading With Twitters management out on their IPO roadshow, the companys trading debut is fast approaching. Much effort has been spent by others trying to determine whether the IPO price is a good deal or not. The reality, however, is that while the IPO price makes a good story, few traders are going to get a piece of the IPO. For them, its how the company trades on its debut and beyond, that is going to be more important and drive their profits or losses. What makes a high profile IPO? Companies around the world go public all the time, but only a few capture the imagination of the street, the media and the general public. These are usually larger companies with millions of customers and fans that are very familiar and who are looking for a piece of the action. There are usually only so many shares available for sale in an IPO and when demand outstrips supply, nobody gets as much as they want, leaving individual investors and traders ready and waiting to purchase shares when they debut in the open market. This unfilled demand tends to drive the initial trading spikes on the debut that attracts the press. While these price spikes may be great for those lucky enough to get IPO stock, do they leave any room for anyone else to make money? Avoiding the Facebook disaster The Twitter IPO is mainly being compared with last years Facebook IPO as both companies are well known social media plays. Twitter appears to be trying to do what it can to avoid the problems that plagued Facebook through its first year of trading. Although it wouldnt seem like it today, with the stock having nearly doubled in the last three months, Facebook got off to a rocky start with trading problems in the exchange on its debut, a lower close on the first day, and continued declines from there. This led to accusations that Facebooks IPO was over-hyped and over-priced. To try and avoid a repeat of Facebooks troubles, Twitter has decided to list on a different exchange (NYSE instead of NASDAQ) and to price at a lower valuation than Facebook did. Post-debut trading trends for new technology stocks Analysis of previous technology and social media IPOs with high public profiles over the last ten years shows that, while shares have tended to get off to a strong start (even Facebook briefly traded above its IPO price on the first day), initial gains are not usually sustainable for a number of reasons. First, as with sports teams, there is a lot of attention paid to opening day from the media and fans that then drops off. Once leftover demand from the IPO is filled, it becomes another of thousands of stocks available for trading. Second, there is a quiet period for research following IPOs. Analysts with firms that underwrite the IPO are prohibited by regulation to publish research on the IPO company for a specific number of days following an IPO. This tends to take the wind out of a new stocks sails for a while until the blackout ends and brokers/analysts are able to get out and drum up interest again. Third, IPOs are about imagination and projections but trading is about results. Once in the marketplace, a new stock has to report earnings and sales just like existing stocks and needs to deliver on expectations. A heavily hyped and high priced IPO or a big spike in initial trading may create extremely high expectations, raising the risk of disappointment when cold, hard numbers start to come out. Fourth, the problem is that IPOs are usually undertaken to raise money for new initiatives that can take a while to be implemented and become profitable. This can lead to disappointment with the first few earnings reports. With Facebook, it took over a year for its mobile advertising offering to really take off, at which point the shares doubled in value in under three months. Fifth, throughout the first year of trading, the supply of shares steadily increases as shares that had been held when it was a private company come out of lockup, which can weigh on the market at different points in time. Because of these factors, after an initial flurry of activity on their debut, high profile technology names have then tended to go through a lull period where they drop back in price. It takes time for companies that are new to the markets to build a track record. Trading in the days following an IPO can be particularly volatile and can create opportunities to profit from moves in both directions. Eventually, trading tends to be driven by company performance and broad market conditions, just as is is for more established stocks. Performance of previous high profile technology IPOs Click to Enlarge The chart above shows that there have been significant differences in performance among technology IPOs in their first 100 weeks (two years) of trading. Google has been the gold standard, consistently trading above its IPO price through the first two years. Even with this superior performance, note that after an initial rally, the shares consolidated and went sideways for several months before resuming their uptrend. LinkedIn and Baidu appear to be the middle-of-the-road cases, starting out steady, dropping back under their IPO price for a while and then steadily climbing after about eight months of trading. Groupon and Zynga represent the worst-case scenario: companies that fell in the months following their IPOs and never recovered. Facebooks performance has been somewhere between LinkedIns and Groupons. Its debut was not impressive and it spent nearly all of its first year of trading under its IPO price. In the last three months, however, it has finally caught fire with traders and has started to trend higher. How a stock performs on its opening day gives an indication of how well underwriters performed on pricing the deal. A big opening day means the deal was underpriced, a poor open suggests the deal was overpriced. Google traded essentially flat on its opening day in 2004 and steadily gained steam from there. Its important for traders to realize that opening day or even opening week success does not necessarily mean anything about the future prospects of the stock. Regardless of how they started out, all of the other companies studied traded below their IPO price within 6 to 8 months. A particularly strong opening may only raise the risk of a deeper correction later as we saw with Baidu and Zynga. On the other hand, a poor debut could scare off potential traders as we saw with Facebook and Groupon. Twitter recently increased the offering price range to $23.00 to $25.00 from $17.00 to $20.00. This raises the bar for the first day, but also indicates strong demand for the stock. The higher the IPO and initial trading price, however, the more difficult it may be able to sustain gains after the initial flurry of interest fades. Can Twitters IPO shake off the curse of post-float tech trading? Twitter seems to have learned from Facebooks missteps. It appears to be doing all the right things to sell its IPO while trying to avoid over-hyping the issue. Twitter arrives on the scene at an opportune time. Internet and social media companies have been performing strongly in recent months. In addition to Facebooks double over the last three months, Google has broken through $1,000 per share and continued to climb. On Halloween, Chinese internet company 58.com staged a strong debut, trading as high as $27.00, a 58% rise from its $17.00 IPO price. In this environment, its possible Twitter could have a strong opening day. Regardless of how it performs initially, history suggests that at some point it could have a period of consolidation and may even trade under its IPO price for a time. The first few months of trading for Twitter coincide with what has historically been the strongest time of the year for stocks. The six to eight month time frame when previous IPOs have seen weakness, however, coincides with May and June, historically one of the weaker times of the year for stocks. Earnings reports, lockup dates and other developments may also create significant opportunities for trading throughout the next year. |

On an archaeological dig with her class, Lisa discovers a skeleton that resembles an angel. All of the townspeople believe that the skeleton actually came from an angel, but skeptical Lisa attempts to persuade them that there must be a rational scientific explanation, asking the American paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould to test a sample. After Gould tells Lisa that the tests were inconclusive, she compares the belief in angels to the belief in unicorns and leprechauns and in response, Springfield's religious zealots go on a rampage to destroy all scientific institutions. The episode's writer David X. Cohen (pictured) developed the idea after visiting the American Museum of Natural History, and decided to loosely parallel themes from the Scopes Monkey Trial. The episode received generally positive reviews. It has been discussed in the context of virtual reality, ontology, existentialism, and skepticism; it has also been used in Christian religious education classes to initiate discussion about angels, skepticism, science, and faith. House prices are continuing to surge, especially in Sydney, as buyers take advantage of record low interest rates. In the year to September, the house price index rose 7.6 per cent, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Monday, the biggest increase in three years. Of the eight capital cities, Sydney had the largest increase with a rise of 11.4 per cent, followed by a 8.6 per cent increase in Perth. JP Morgan economist Tom Kennedy said the data showed the housing market, particularly in Sydney, was on the rise. "In the nation's largest property market, things really are starting to heat up," he said. "In Melbourne as well, price appreciation was very strong and also in Brisbane." Mr Kennedy said recent interest rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of Australia are making an impact on the housing sector. "A big part of the Reserve Bank story is that they've been trying to revive the construction sector, so I think the big uptick we've seen in prices definitely is supportive of that, as higher prices encourage activity and investment," he said. HSBC chief economist Paul Bloxham said the continued rise in house prices may mean that the housing sector is picking up where the mining and resources boom left off. "The official house price data confirmed what the more timely indicators have been suggesting - that Australia is at the beginning of a house price boom. "While some pick-up in employment will be needed soon, to keep the RBA from cutting rates further, we expect to see some improvement in coming months supported by low interest rates, rising asset prices and lifting confidence. "Growth appears to be rebalancing, with a modest upswing underway in the non-mining sectors and regions of the economy." Australian capital city house prices rose 1.9 per cent in the September quarter, and were up 2.7 per cent in the June quarter. ....@y7finance on Twitter, become a fan on Facebook .. |

The festival, known as "Dhanatrayodashi" or "Dhanvantari Trayodashi".The word Dhan means wealth and Teras means 13th day as per Hindu calendar. It is celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin. On Dhanteras, Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped to provide prosperity and well being. Dhanteras holds special significance for the business community due to the customary purchases of precious metals on this day. Lord Kubera, the God of assets and wealth is also worshiped on this day. [2] Contents [hide] 1 Celebration 2 Legends 3 Preparation 4 Traditions 5 Celebrations 6 See also 7 References 8 External links Celebration[edit]On Dhanteras, Lakshmi - the Goddess of wealth - is worshiped to provide prosperity and well being. It is also the day for celebrating wealth, as the word 'Dhan' literally means wealth and 'Tera' comes from the date 13th (trayodashi in Sanskrit and Teras in Hindi). In the evening, the lamp is lit and Dhan-Lakshmi is welcomed into the house. Alpana or Rangoli designs are drawn on pathways including the goddess' footprints to mark the arrival of Lakshmi. Aartis or devotional hymns are sung eulogizing Goddess Lakshmi and sweets and fruits are offered to her. People flock to the jewellers and buy gold or silver jewellery or utensils to venerate the occasion of Dhanteras. Many wear new clothes and wear jewellery as they light the first lamp of Diwali while some engage in a game of gambling.[3] Legends[edit]An ancient legend ascribes the occasion to on interesting story about the 16 year old son of King Hima. His horoscope predicted his death by snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. On that particular day, his newly-wed wife did not allow him to sleep. She laid out all her ornaments and lots of gold and silver coins in a heap at the entrance of the sleeping chamber and lit lamps all over the place. Then she narrated stories and sang songs to keep her husband from falling asleep. The next day, when Yama, the god of Death, arrived at the princes doorstep in the guise of a Serpent, his eyes were dazzled and blinded by the brilliance of the lamps and the jewellery. Yama could not enter the Prince's chamber, so he climbed on top of the heap of gold coins and sat there the entire night listening to the stories and songs. In the morning, he silently went away. Thus, the young prince was saved from the clutches of death by the cleverness of his new bride, and the day came to be celebrated as Dhanteras. The following day came to be called Naraka Chaturdashi ('Naraka' means hell and Chaturdashi means 14th). It is also known as Yamadeepdaan as the ladies of the house light earthen lamps or deep and these are kept burning throughout the night glorifying Yama, the God of Death. Since this is the night before Diwali, it is also called 'Chhoti Diwali' or Diwali minor Diwali.[4] According to another popular legend, when the Gods and demons churned the ocean for Amrita or nectar, Dhanvantari (the physician of the Gods and an incarnation of Vishnu) emerged carrying a jar of the elixir on the day of Dhanteras.[5] Preparation[edit]On the day of Dhanteras, business premises are renovated and decorated. Entrances are made colorful with traditional motifs of Rangoli designs to welcome the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity. To indicate her long-awaited arrival, small footprints are drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder all over the houses. Lamps are kept burning all through the night. Traditions[edit]On Dhanteras Hindus consider it auspicious to purchase gold or silver articles or at least one or two new utensils. It is believed that new Dhan or some form of precious metal is a sign of good luck. "Lakshmi Puja" is performed in the evenings when tiny Diyas of clay are lit to drive away the shadows of evil spirits. "Bhajans", devotional songs in praise of Goddess Lakshmi, are also sung. Celebrations[edit]Dhanteras is celebrated with gusto and enthusiasm. "Lakshmi Puja" is performed in the evenings when tiny diyas of clay are lit to drive away the shadows of evil spirits. Bhajans, devotional songs in praise of Goddess Laxmi, are sung and "Naivedya" of traditional sweets is offered to the Goddess. There is a peculiar custom in Maharashtra to lightly pound dry coriander seeds (Dhane in Marathi for Dhanatrayodashi) with jaggery and offer as Naivedya. In villages, cattle are adorned and worshiped by farmers as they form the main source of their income. In south India, cows are offered, particularly, a special veneration because they are thought of as incarnations of Goddess Lakshmi. It has been travelled since ancient times, while scientific oceanography dates broadly from Captain James Cook's 18th-century voyages. Winds produce waves and surface currents, and deep-sea currents carry cold water to every ocean. Large events such as submarine earthquakes can cause destructive tsunamis. Tides are caused by the rotation of the Earth and the gravitational effects of the Moon and the Sun. A variety of organisms live in the sea's many habitats, from the sunlit surface to the cold, dark abyssal zone, and from the Arctic to colourful tropical coral reefs. Life itself may have started in the sea. The sea provides humans with food including fish and shellfish, and enables trade, travel, mineral extraction, power generation, naval warfare, and leisure, though often at the cost of marine pollution. The sea has been important in human culture since Homer's Odyssey, appearing in literature, mythology, marine art, cinema, theatre, classical music and dream interpretation. (Full article...) NAB, the country's top lender by assets, tumbled 2.5 percent after it reported a record annual profit but analysts said its earnings potential had been constrained by its struggling British businesses. The S&P/ASX 200 index dropped 5.4 points to 5,425.5, after rising 0.3 percent on Wednesday. Investors were also cautious after Wall Street lost ground on Tuesday as the U.S. Federal Reserve's latest policy outlook was seen as steering clear of some of the more ultra-dovish market views. New Zealand's benchmark NZX 50 index added 0.9 percent to a record high of 4,909.7. He experienced a religious conversion around 1910 and came to believe that the New Testament commanded all Christians to handle venomous snakes. Although illiterate, he was a licensed minister of the Church of God from 1915 to 1922. He was arrested on moonshine-related charges and sentenced to a term in a workhouse, from which he escaped. He then held revival services in Ohio, and established churches, known as the Church of God with Signs Following, in Tennessee and Kentucky. His services ranged from small meetings in houses to gatherings with hundreds of attendees and media attention. He was arrested for violating laws against snake handling at least twice. He claimed to have survived more than 400 snake bites, but fell ill after being bitten during a service in 1955. He refused medical attention and died the next day. Despite his personal failingshe had conflicts with his family because of his drunkenness, frequent travels, and lack of steady incomeHensley convinced many residents of rural Appalachia that snake handling was commanded by God, and his followers continued the practice after his death. Date Posted: 19:02:48 10/26/13 Sat Get efficient installs with video creative and CPA buying for mobile app ads By Radu Margarint - Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at 4:00am Today we're offering two new capabilities to mobile app ads that will improve the efficiency of your app installs. Use video creative to engage new customers and get more installs Now you can use video creative in your mobile app ad aimed at driving installs to bring your app to life in Facebook's mobile News Feed. Potential customers will be able to click play to watch a video featuring your mobile app before installing the app. Video creative has proven to be an effective way to drive engagement in News Feed, and we look forward to helping developers use their video creative to find new app installs. DoubleDown Casino was one of our early partners to test video creative in mobile app ads. "In our early tests, we found that using video in our mobile app ads resulted in increased install rates and decreased costs per install," said John Clelland, Vice President, Interactive Marketing for DoubleDown Casino. "We've seen tremendous success with mobile app ads and are looking forward to using video to make them even more engaging with rich media like video." As always, compelling creative is critical to effective mobile app advertising. We recommend videos that showcase the best features of your app, including use of lifestyle or product shots along with in-app screenplays. |

Date Posted: 00:27:24 10/25/13 Fri Stocks bounce after modest pullback By optionMONSTER, October 24, 2013, 08:12:47 AM EDT Vote up Stocks are rebounding from a modest pullback yesterday, lifted by strong economic numbers from China. S&P 500 futures are climbing about 0.4 percent, while the Nasdaq 100 and Russell 2000 indexes are posting smaller gains. Most European markets are up about half a percent. Asia was mixed in the overnight session, with Tokyo advancing slightly and Shanghai falling almost 1 percent. A survey of purchasing managers in China showed manufacturing accelerating at its strongest pace in seven months. Similar surveys for Europe were less impressive, especially in regional leader Germany. Attention now turns to corporate earnings and United States data. Ford Motor is up 3.5 percent after results beat expectations and management raised guidance. Homebuilder PulteGroup is also climbing after higher prices drove a strong set of numbers. Tech names Symantec and Akamai fell on weak guidance, while semiconductor-equipment company Lam Research is muscling its way higher. The S&P 500 has been climbing almost uninterrupted since bouncing near its 100-day moving average on Oct. 9. Highly leveraged financials, such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, bond guarantors, and private-equity firms, have led the advance thanks to improved credit quality. Our researchLAB market-intelligence tool has also shown strength in oil refiners, solar stocks, and metals during that period. On a broader sector level, industrials, materials, and real-estate investment trusts have outperformed as well. The Labor Department will announce initial jobless claims at 8:30 a.m. ET, followed by Markit's index of manufacturing activity 28 minutes later. The data could move markets as investors try to anticipate the tone of the Federal Reserve's monetary announcement next Wednesday, Oct. 30. Commodities and modestly bullish, with oil and copper eking out small gains. Gold and silver rose more than half a percent, while agricultural products are lower. U.S. dollar strength is the main theme in foreign-exchange markets as the euro, yen, and Australian and Canadian dollars all decline against the greenback. Sell AAPL Today? It is recognized by its cream color, known as "gold champagne", produced by the action of the champagne gene upon a chestnut base color, and by its amber eyes, also characteristic of the gene; the only other color found in the breed is chestnut. Like several other breeds of draft horses, the American Cream is at risk for the autosomal recessive genetic disease junctional epidermolysis bullosa. The breed was developed in Iowa during the early 20th century, beginning with a cream-colored mare named Old Granny. The Great Depression threatened the breed's existence, but several breeders worked to improve the color and type of the breed, and in 1944 a breed registry was formed. The mechanization of farming in the mid-20th century led to a decrease in the breed's population and the registry became inactive for several decades. It was reactivated in 1982 and population numbers have slowly grown since then. However, population numbers are still considered critical by The Livestock Conservancy and the Equus Survival Trust. | Subject: Which is the First Day of the Week: | |

Author: ISO decision by starting the week on Monday. Airline timetables also number the days from Monday as 1, Tuesday as 2, Wednesday as 3, etc. [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 19:15:05 10/18/13 Fri Which is the First Day of the Week: Sunday or Monday? Sunday was traditionally regarded as the first day of the week by both Christians and Jews. Following Jewish tradition, the Bible is quite explicit that God rested on the seventh day of Creation, which formed the basis for the Sabbath, the day of rest. Even when Constantine made Sunday the Christian day of rest, thus giving it the traditional functions of the Jewish Sabbath, there was no question that Sunday remained the first day of the week. The week introduced by Constantine treated Sunday as Kyriaki 'of the Lord', followed by numbered days from Monday to Thursday ('second' to 'fifth') and specific names for Friday and Saturday. Saturday was Savvato, the Sabbath. (As to whether Constantine was swayed by his previous worship of the Sun God, or whether he simply ratified a practice that already existed among practising Christians is a point of heated debate among certain modern Christians. It does seem true, however, that Constantine was motivated by a spirit of compromise rather than doctrinal purity. A lot of information about this can be found on the Web). Notwithstanding Constantine, the custom of treating Monday as the first day of the week appeared quite early. When saints Cyril and Methodius brought Christianity to the Slavs, they took on the Greek tradition of numbering the days, but they numbered them from Monday instead of Sunday. Thus, Slavic languages treat Monday as the first day, Tuesday as the second, etc. Saturday and Sunday are the only days that are named rather than numbered. Saturday is the Sabbath and Sunday in Russian is the word for "Resurrection". (The foregoing information on Greek and Slavic naming due to John Wilson, personal communication). In Hungarian, which is a non-Slavic language in a Roman Catholic country, Tuesday appears to come from the word for 'two'. Lithuanian and Latvian, neither of which is Slavic, also name the days with numerals, with Monday coming first. In more modern times, industrial society has done much to destroy the traditional concept of Sunday as the first day. According to Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary (1983), the term 'weekend', first recorded in 1878, refers to 'the period between the close of one working or business or school week and the beginning of the next'. This concept firmly places Sunday at the end of the week. Possibly because of this, the International Standards Organisation has decided that Monday is to be regarded as the first day of the week. Calendars in many European countries, in particular, now follow the ISO decision by starting the week on Monday. Airline timetables also number the days from Monday as 1, Tuesday as 2, Wednesday as 3, etc. Information on the web is rather fragmentary, but references can be found at Is Sunday or Monday the first day of the week?, the Catholic Encyclopedia (Sunday, the Sabbath, and Liturgical Week), the Days of the Week page, Larry Freeman's Calendar Origin Page, Claus Tndering's Calendar FAQ, International Units: The Week, and Wikipedia. |

The move pushed the S&P 500 to a fresh record high, but it wasnt all good news in the market as a trio of disappointing corporate earnings kept the Dow Jones industrial average from joining the party. The Dow slid .4% in morning trading due to disappointing earnings results from IBM IBM, Goldman Sachs Group Goldman Sachs Group and UnitedHealth Group UnitedHealth Group. Shortly before noon the IBM loss was taking 71 points off the Dow, Goldman 25 and UnitedHealth 21, more than accounting for the drop in the index. IBM alone dropped more than enough to keep the 30-stock Dow from joining the S&P and Nasdaq in positive territory even with more than half the averages components in the green. Wednesday, IBM announced that earnings per share hit $3.99, beating estimates, but sales fell 4% to $23.7 billion. The stock slid 6.1% to $175.40 on Thursday morning, continuing a downward trend for the year. (See, IBM Falls Off A Cliff As Q3 Sales Fall On Services And Hardware Weakness.) Goldman shares were down 2.4% to $158.36 after mixed results including $2.88 per share earnings that beat analyst consensus, and $6.7 billion revenue that did not. CEO Lloyd Blankfein cited slower client activity and economic uncertainty as reasons for the lack of revenue growth and weakness in the firms trading business. (See, Goldman Profits Flat After Summer Trading Slowdown.) UnitedHealth hit consensus estimates, but investors apparently expected more out of the top end of its revised full-year forecast. The stock dropped 5.5% to $71.09. (See, UnitedHealth Slides On Smaller Earnings Upside.) |

Date Posted: 03:04:24 10/18/13 Fri ............Buffett says allowing US default would be idiocy By JOSH FUNK | Associated Press Thu, Oct 17, 2013 2:17 AM AEDT ....Email 0Recommend1Tweet0Share0Print.....OMAHA, Neb. (AP) Billionaire Warren Buffett has said it would be idiocy for the nation's leaders to allow the United States to default on its bills. Buffett is a renowned investor who leads the Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate. He appeared Wednesday on CNBC. Buffett said he thinks it would be absurd for American politicians to do anything to damage the country's reputation for paying its bills that has been established over the past 237 years. "I don't think it will happen, but if it does happen, it's a pure act of idiocy," Buffett said about the possibility of default. Related: What the deal will do for the Australian economy Congressional leaders were still working Wednesday morning on a deal to end the partial government shutdown and prevent default. Buffett said both political parties should agree not to use the debt limit as a bargaining chip in the future because it is "a political weapon of mass destruction." "Credit worthiness is like virginity, it can be preserved but not restored very easily, so it is crazy to play around with it," Buffett said on CNBC. But Buffett said he hasn't changed Berkshire's spending because of the budget battle, and it didn't factor in his decision to complete a $1.1 billion acquisition. Berkshire said Wednesday it will buy the beverage dispenser business from Britain's IMI PLC on behalf of its Marmon Group subsidiary. "I wouldn't have changed the price a penny based on what's happened," Buffett said. Related: Shutdown has hit US growth The deal is relatively small by Berkshire's standards. The company spent $12.25 billion earlier this year to acquire half of ketchup maker H.J. Heinz Co. in a $23.3 billion deal. Buffett said Wednesday that another similar-sized deal recently got away from Berkshire. Buffett also said he hasn't yet seen an effect on consumer spending in the reports he gets from Berkshire subsidiaries like its furniture and jewelry stores, but that would change if the government defaults. Buffett said he hasn't sold off any of Berkshire's short-term treasury bills because of the budget battle. He said he's not worried about the government paying those. Berkshire Hathaway Inc. owns about 80 subsidiaries, including clothing, brick, carpet and paint firms. Its insurance and utility businesses typically account for more than half of the company's net income. It also has major investments in such companies as Coca-Cola Co. and Wells Fargo & Co. ___ Online: Berkshire Hathaway Inc.: www.berkshirehathaway.com ___ Follow Josh Funk at www.twitter.com/funkwrite ....@y7finance on Twitter, become a fan on Facebook .. |

One owns a factory, another works in a factory out Liverpool way. My parents and sister have now passed away. I was in the special school in Woy Woy. I cant read or write well, I can write my name, but not my address. I worked in the disability factory at Ingleburn; you make $130 a fortnight, packing stuff and things like that. I did that for a long time, but I thought the people there were too bossy, so I left. I was not doing anything before The Big Issue, just travelling on the trains. I love travelling around I know what Im doing, what times the bus and trains leave; I dont have to look it up. Im on the disability pension, so its $2.50 to go anywhere, even the ferry. My pension goes to the Guardianship Board, who manage the money. I met one of the ladies at a church in Petersham where I went for lunch Susan [Leith-Miller, NSW Operations Manager] was there telling people about The Big Issue. Its been two months. I sold heaps of one edition. I love doing it I smile and let the customers come to me. Most of them know me a little bit, and sometimes I get tips. I went to Hurstville today. I sell in lots of places Palm Beach, Dee Why, Collaroy, Warringah Mall, I do everywhere. I work from 8am to 8pm, seven days straight. I do come into the [Big Issue] office some mornings and have a coffee. The staff are very nice I dont know the other vendors, so I just keep to myself. I live in a one-bedroom apartment and I know how to cook and clean up, make my bed and everything. I dont have a TV at the moment, because I just moved in. Id like to get one, and a washing machine and a new fridge. I watch movies sometimes on a little DVD player. This is my favourite job and Ill stick with it, all the way through. I like to do The Big Issue it keeps me busy, occupied. And I like being [profiled] here in The Big Issue [magazine], because a lot of my customers will buy it. Even if no one buys it, Ill like to look at the photo!" Interview by by Peter Ascot/ photograph by Peter Holcroft Bradley sells The Big Issue in Sydney |

According to stock index futures as of 8 a.m. EDT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) will begin the day solidly higher, gaining 100 points at the opening bell. With the default clock ticking, Congress finds itself in the exact same position it was in yesterday morning -- only with less time before tomorrow's fiscal default deadline. Senate leaders are reportedly close to hashing out a short-term deal to fund the government and extend the debt ceiling today, after the House of Representatives, in what The Washington Post described as a "humiliating failure," could not craft a deal of their own yesterday. Expect another day of volatile trading as politicians try to keep an embarrassing episode from becoming a full-blown fiasco. With that bigger picture in mind, here are a few individual stock stories to watch for in today's market. Bank of America (NYSE: BAC ) earned $0.20 per share in profit last quarter on $21.7 billion in revenue. The company's strong earnings rebound continued, as it booked $2.5 billion in net income versus the $340 million it logged in the year-ago quarter. One big factor driving that bounce was the amount of earnings set aside for credit losses, which fell by almost $1 billion to just $296 million. Bank of America stock is up 0.4% in premarket trading. PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP ) saw a solid jump in earnings to $1.24 a share, as core revenue rose 3.3% in the quarter. Snacks outperformed beverages again this quarter, and the company reaffirmed its earnings guidance for the full year. Pepsi shares are up 0.3% in premarket trading . Stanley Black & Decker (NYSE: SWK ) shares could take a hit today after the company slashed its profit outlook, in part due to the continuing government shutdown. Profitability isn't growing nearly as fast as the company expected, leading it to cut earnings-per-share guidance to $4.95 from the roughly $5.50 it had forecast before. Still, Stanley's sales volumes were up 5%, and revenue climbed a respectable 10% in the quarter. Shares are down 11.4% in premarket trading. Finally, Advance Auto Parts (NYSE: AAP ) is making a huge purchase. It announced plans this morning to buy privately managed General Parts International for $2 billion in cash. The deal will add about 1,600 locations to Advance's 4,000-store footprint and bring its total annual sales to over $9 billion, about the same as AutoZone's. Advance's stock is up 17.3% in premarket trading. Know Your Bank Stocks Have you missed out on the massive gains in bank stocks over the past few years? There's good news: It's not too late. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew testified before Congress on Thursday, saying that come October 17, if Congress fails to pass a stopgap measure to increase the debt limit, the U.S. would be left with a cash balance of approximately $30 billion and would have to use incoming tax revenue to pay the nationfs bills. gIf Congress fails to meet its responsibility, it could be deeply damaging to the financial markets, the ongoing economic recovery, and the jobs and savings of millions of Americans,h Lew said. Once again markets have held their nerve as the Midnight Thursday Washington time (3pm Friday Sydney )deadline offered by the US Treasury approaches (when it expects to exhaust its borrowing authority) leaving the US Federal Government with no more than US$30bn on hand. It will then depend on daily tax receipts and government payments, as to when the US government could potentially default on an obligation. The ASX200 was able to reverse a 29 point deficit this morning. Volumes under the circumstance were reasonable. The positive impetus came from the big 3 miners, RIO, BHP and RIO. having maintained yesterdays positive momentum. Brambles (BXB) rose almost 1 % following a positive trading update. Brambles said sales revenue for its pooling solutions operations rose thanks to its acquisition of container company Pallecon late in 2012. The pooling business which provides pallets and containers to businesses received $1.38 billion for the three months to the end of September, an increase of seven per cent on the same time last year. The group said the increase reflected new business and the contribution of Pallecon which Brambles acquired for $170 million in December. Brambles pooling solutions does not include the companys Recall information management business, which it plans to demerge. Brambles said it remained on track to deliver an underlying profit of between $US930 million and $US985 million for the 2014 financial year. At its AGM today, CSL confirmed the $950mn share buy-back foreshadowed in its full year results in August, the seventh for the company in eight years .The blood products group reaffirmed expectations for a 10% increase in underlying profit growth. GOLD is holding steady after being knocked around by political headlines concerning the US debt deal. A pick up in safe haven buying has emerged of late out of China and India on fears over a potential US default Tom Piotrowski Market Analyst MID-SESSION REPORT (12.30pm AEDT) The local markets has done it all in the first half of the session, with stocks down by as much as 0.5 per cent early on, trading flat more recently and currently up by just a few points at lunch. The All Ordinaries Index (XAO) is up by around 0.2 per cent. What makes this impressive is that the US political circus continues. Yesterdays excitement of an imminent solution on the debt ceiling resolution and the reopening of the US government (now shut for 15 days) has died down. Fitch, one of the big three ratings agencies put the US AAA credit rating on rating watch negative. This implies that theres a 50/50 chance of a credit downgrade (according to Fitch). The mining sector is to thank for a good portion of todays gains, with the S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (a measure of mining sector performance) up 0.71 per cent at lunch. Rio Tintos solid quarterly production numbers yesterday is helping lift its shares by a further 1.2 per cent (up 2.5 per cent yesterday). The larger BHP Billiton (BHP), which issues its September quarter production figures on 22 October, is up 1.1 per cent. Iron ore producer, Fortescue Metals (FMG) is up 3 per cent. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) season continues, with a number of well-known names speaking with investors. Biopharmaceutical firm, CSL Limited (CSL) is the biggest of the companys meeting shareholders. The blood products and vaccines maker announced a close to $1 billion buyback over the next 12 months due in part to slow growth. The Australian dollar currently buys US95 cents and has been a big winner in recent weeks with the US debt ceiling remaining a concern. Only a week ago, one Australian dollar was buying US94.4 cents and US93.8 cents a week earlier. The longer the negotiation deadlock continues in the US, the longer the Australian dollar is likely to remain strong. No major economic news is issued in Australia or the region today. A public holiday in India will keep its market closed. Have a great day. Steven Daghlian CommSec Market Analyst MORNING REPORT (7.05am AEDT) In US economic news, chain store sales in the latest week were 3.2pct higher than a year ago, down from a 3.3pct annual gain in the previous week according to Redbook Research. The US dollar was again mixed against major currencies over the European and US sessions. The Euro fell from highs near US$1.3570 to around US$1.3480 before ending US trade around US$1.3515. The Aussie dollar eased from near US95.45c to US94.98c, ending US trade near US95.10c. And the Japanese yen lifted from 98.69 yen per US dollar to JPY98.17, ending US trade near JPY98.33. World oil prices fell on Tuesday as US budget and debt ceiling talks dragged on. Brent crude fell by US$1.08 or 1.0pct to US$109.96 a barrel while US Nymex rose by US$1.20 or 1.2pct to US$101.21 a barrel. Base metal prices were mixed on the London Metals Exchange on Tuesday. Date Posted: 01:53:32 10/13/13 Sun The Big Issue in the North A weekly magazine. Vendors are working not begging.Skip to contentAbout usBecome A VendorMedia CentreContact usAdvertiseSearch for: The Big life group About us The way it works The Big Issue in the North is a business solution to a social problem. Its a limited company employing staff to produce and distribute a weekly magazine that is sold by homeless people and others who have no means of earning an income in the North West and Yorkshire and Humber. As well as selling the magazine, most of our vendors are given advice by staff on how to find the services such as skills training or English language courses that can help them achieve their goals and move away from the streets for good. Vendors buy The Big Issue in the North from one of our regional offices for 1 and then sell it on established pitches in towns and cities for 2. They keep the 1 they make on every magazine. Selling The Big Issue in the North gives homeless people the opportunity to earn an income. It also gives them motivation and self-esteem. The Big Issue in the North vendors are making a commitment to earn an income. Sixty-five per cent of vendors have never begged and 97 per cent of those who have committed crime to fund life on the street or a drink or drug habit say they have offended less since they have been selling the magazine. Support services for vendors such as breakfast clubs and arts projects are managed and delivered by The Big Issue in the North Trust. Code of conduct Everyone selling the magazine has to work according to the code of conduct, a set of rules governing how vendors work. Vendors: can only sell on designated pitches cannot sell between 8pm and 7am must wear their own badge can only buy magazines for themselves must not use physical or verbal aggression towards members of the public or other vendors are not allowed to sell if staff feel they are unfit to do so must stand when selling must not beg for money using the magazine (asking for spare change or other items is considered to be begging) can only charge the cover price for each magazine and must always give the customer the magazine once paid for. FAQs Click to download our FAQs as a PDF. History John Bird launched The Big Issue in London in 1991, with funding from Gordon Roddick of The Body Shop. The Big Issue in the North started in December 1992 as a Manchester supplement within the London-based magazine. From there, The Big Issue in the North grew as an independent publication distributed in the North West and Yorkshire and Humber. To expand the range of services that we offered to vendors, The Big Issue in the North Trust was established in 1996. A big fundraising campaign, plus National Lottery money and a regeneration grant from English Partnerships meant we were able to buy premises in Manchester, to which we moved in 1998. Offices in Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield and Hull were also opened, with sub-offices in Preston and Kendal. In 2002, The Big Issue in the North merged with Diverse Resources to form The Big Life group of social business and charities.
