Epidemics caused by viruses began during the Neolithic period. Having been hunter-gatherers, humans developed more densely populated agricultural communities, which allowed viruses to spread rapidly and subsequently to become endemic. Smallpox and measles viruses are among the oldest that infect humans. Having evolved from viruses that infected animals, they first appeared in humans in Europe and North Africa thousands of years ago. Louis Pasteur and Edward Jenner were the first to develop vaccines to protect against viral infections. The nature of viruses remained unknown until the invention of the electron microscope in the 1930s, when the science of virology gained momentum. In the 20th century many diseases both old and new were found to be caused by viruses. HIV is the most pathogenic new virus to have emerged in centuries. Although scientific interest in viruses arose because of the diseases they cause, most viruses are beneficial. They drive evolution by transferring genes across species, play important roles in ecosystems and are essential to life. (Full article...) Date Posted: 22:05:25 08/17/13 Sat 50 Slang Terms for Money by Mark Nichol I find very little about money to be interesting, other than counting my own, but I’ve noted that there’s a rich fund of slang terms for money that can help enliven both casual and more serious content about currency and finance. Here’s a roster of slang synonyms in plural form for words for US currency in particular, many of which are useful for playful references to money or as options for evoking a historical period in fiction by using contemporary idiom: 1. Bank: money 2. Benjamins: a one-hundred-dollar bill (in reference to the portrait of Benjamin Franklin that distinguishes it) 3. Big ones: multiples of one thousand dollars 4. Bills: multiples of one hundred dollars 5. Bones: dollars (origin unknown) 6. Bread: money in general (on the analogy of it being a staple of life) 7. Bucks: dollars (perhaps from a reference to buckskins, or deerskins, which were once used as currency) 8. Cabbage: paper money (from its color) 9. Cheddar (or chedda): money (origin unknown, but perhaps from the concept of cheese distributed by the government to welfare recipients) 10. Clams: dollars (perhaps from the onetime use of seashells as currency) 11. Coin: money, either paper or coinage 12-13. Cs (or C-notes): multiples of one hundred dollars (from the Roman symbol for “one hundred”) 14. Dead presidents: paper money (from the portraits of various former US presidents that usually distinguish bills of various denominations) 15. Dime: ten dollars (by multiplication of the value of the ten-cent coin) 16. Dough: money in general (akin to the usage of bread) 17-18. Doubles (or dubs): twenty-dollar bills 19. Ducats: money (from the Italian coin) 20. Fins: five-dollar bills (perhaps from the shared initial sound with fives) 21. Five-spots: five-dollar bills 22. Fivers: five-dollar bills 23. Folding stuff: paper money 24. Greenbacks: paper money (from the color of the ink) 25. Gs: thousand-dollar bills (an abbreviation for grand) 26. Grand: one thousand dollars (as in “three grand” for “three thousand dollars”) 27. Large: thousand-dollar bills 28. Lettuce: paper money (from its color) 29. Long green: paper money (from its shape and color) 30. Loot: money (originally denoted goods obtained illicitly or as the spoils of war) 31. Lucre: money or profit (from the biblical expression “filthy lucre,” meaning “ill-gained money”) 32. Moola (or moolah): money (origin unknown) 33. Nickel: five dollars (by multiplication of the value of the five-cent coin) 34. Ones: dollars (also, fives for “five-dollar bills,” tens for “ten-dollar bills,” and so on) 35. Quarter: twenty-five dollars (by multiplication of the value of the twenty-five-cent coin) 36. Sawbucks: ten-dollar bills (from the resemblance of X, the Roman symbol for ten, to a sawbuck, or sawhorse) 37. Scratch: money (perhaps from the idea that one has to struggle as if scratching the ground to obtain it) 38. Shekels: dollars (from the biblical currency) 39. Simoleons: dollars (perhaps from a combination of simon, slang for the British sixpence and later the American dollar, and napoleon, a form of French currency) 40. Singles: one-dollar bills 41. Skrilla: money (origin unknown) 42. Smackers: dollars (origin unknown) 43. Spondulix: money (either from spondylus, a Greek word for a shell once used as currency, or from the prefix spondylo-, which means “spine” or “vertebra”; these have a common etymology) 44. Stacks: multiples of a thousand dollars 45. Tenners: ten-dollar bills 46. Ten-spots: ten-dollar bills 47. Two bits: twenty-five cents (a reference to pieces of eight, divisible sections of a Mexican real, or dollar) 48. Wad: a bundle of paper money 49. Wampum: money (from the Native American term wampumpeag, referring to native currency) 50. Yards: one hundred dollars There are, of course, many other terms, dated or current, including borrowings of foreign terms like dinero. What did I miss (or omit)? |

Date Posted: 21:25:15 08/17/13 Sat GeekDadParents, Kids and the Stuff We Obsess About The InternetPeopleShare on Facebookshares inShare.1,01620 Years Ago Today: The First Website Is Published By Matt Blum08.06.118:00 AM Edit Tim Berners-Lee It was August 6, 1991, at a CERN facility in the Swiss Alps, when 36-year-old physicist Tim Berners-Lee published the first-ever website. It was, not surprisingly, a pretty basic one — according to CERN: Info.cern.ch was the address of the world’s first-ever web site and web server, running on a NeXT computer at CERN. The first web page address was http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html, which centred on information regarding the WWW project. Visitors could learn more about hypertext, technical details for creating their own webpage, and even an explanation on how to search the Web for information. There are no screenshots of this original page and, in any case, changes were made daily to the information available on the page as the WWW project developed. You may find a later copy (1992) on the World Wide Web Consortium website. Of course, the only people who actually had web browser software were Berners-Lee and his colleagues at CERN, so the world at large remained almost entirely ignorant of the momentous event that had just taken place. Gradually installations of web servers and the use of web browsers spread, but it really wasn’t until 1993, when the Mosaic browser was released, that the technology really achieved serious momentum. In 1994, Berners-Lee founded the World Wide Web Consortium (often referred to as “W3C”) at MIT in order to create standards for the web to ensure that different websites would all work the same way. Berners-Lee, now 56, is still the director of the W3C, in addition to several other positions he holds. While there are and surely always will be some deviations from the standards by many websites and browsers, it’s not a stretch to say that the web as we know it would probably not exist if not for the W3C’s guidance. Tim Berners-Lee's NeXT at CERN: The first-ever web server, browser, and editor. It can be hard now, even for many of us who regularly used the Internet before there was a World Wide Web, to remember that there was a time when the two terms weren’t considered nearly synonymous by the general public. Of course, that’s partly because, before the proliferation of websites that followed Mosaic’s release (and for some time thereafter), most members of the general public didn’t have the least idea that the Internet even existed. And it’s nigh-impossible to conceive of just how different the world would be today were it not for the event of twenty years ago today. Heck, you’d probably have to go to comp.wired.geekdad on Usenet to read this blog. So please join us in saying “Happy birthday!” to the World Wide Web! At the rate things change in the world of technology, I can scarcely imagine what it’ll look like when twenty more years have passed. It should be fun finding out. Date Posted: 20:31:24 08/17/13 Sat Minced oath From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Minced Oath) Jump to: navigation, search A minced oath is a euphemistic expression formed by misspelling, mispronouncing, or replacing a part of a profane, blasphemous, or taboo term to reduce the original term's objectionable characteristics. Some examples include "gosh" for God, "darn" for damn, and "heck" for Hell. Many languages have such expressions. In the English language, nearly all profanities have minced variants.[1] Contents [hide] 1 Formation 2 History 3 Acceptability 4 Literature and censorship 5 Examples 5.1 Other religious examples 6 See also 7 Footnotes 8 References Formation[edit source | edit]The most common methods of forming a minced oath are rhyme and alliteration. Thus the word bloody (which itself may be an elision of "By Our Lady"—referring to the Virgin Mary) can become blooming, or ruddy.[1] Alliterative minced oaths such as darn for damn allow a speaker to begin to say the prohibited word and then change to a more acceptable expression.[2] In rhyming slang, rhyming euphemisms are often truncated so that the rhyme is eliminated: prick became Hampton Wick and then simply Hampton. Another well-known example is "cunt" rhyming with "Berkeley Hunt", which was subsequently abbreviated to "berk". Alliteration can be combined with metrical equivalence, as in the pseudo-blasphemous "Judas Priest", substituted for the blasphemous use of "Jesus Christ".[3] Minced oaths can also be formed by shortening: e.g., b for bloody or f for fuck.[1] Sometimes words borrowed from other languages become minced oaths; for example, poppycock comes from the Low Dutch pappe kak, meaning "soft dung".[4] The minced oath blank is an ironic reference to the dashes that are sometimes used to replace profanities in print.[5] It goes back at least to 1854, when Cuthbert Bede wrote "I wouldn't give a blank for such a blank blank. I'm blank, if he doesn't look as if he'd swallowed a blank codfish." By the 1880s, it had given rise to the derived forms blanked and blankety,[6] which combined together gave the name of the long running and popular British TV show Blankety Blank. In the same way, bleep arose from the use of a tone to mask profanities on radio.[5] History[edit source | edit]The Cretan king Rhadamanthus is said to have forbidden his subjects to swear by the gods, suggesting that they swear instead by the ram, the goose or the plane tree. Socrates favored the "Rhadamanthine" oath "by the dog", with "the dog" often interpreted as referring to the bright "Dog Star", i.e., Sirius. Aristophanes mentions that people used to swear by birds instead of by the gods, adding that the soothsayer Lampon still swears by the goose "whenever he's going to cheat you".[7] Since no god was called upon, Lampon may have considered this oath safe to break.[8] The use of minced oaths in English dates back at least to the 14th century, when "gog" and "kokk", both euphemisms for God, were in use. Other early minced oaths include "Gis" or "Jis" for Jesus (1528).[9] Late Elizabethan drama contains a profusion of minced oaths, probably due to Puritan opposition to swearing. Seven new minced oaths are first recorded between 1598 and 1602, including 'sblood for By God's blood from Shakespeare, 'slight for God's light from Ben Jonson, and 'snails for By God's nails from the historian John Hayward. Swearing on stage was officially banned by the Act to Restraine Abuses of Players in 1606, and a general ban on swearing followed in 1623. In some cases the original meanings of these minced oaths were forgotten; 'struth (By God's truth) came to be spelled strewth and zounds changed pronunciation (with the vowel as in "found") so that it no longer sounded like By God's wounds.[10] Other examples from this period include 'slid for "By God's eyelid" (1598) and 'sfoot for "By God's foot" (1602). Gadzooks for "By God's hooks" (the nails on Christ's cross) followed in the 1650s, egad for oh God in the late 17th century,[11] and ods bodikins for "By God's bodkins [i.e. nail]s" in 1709.[12] Acceptability[edit source | edit]Although minced oaths are not as strong as the expressions from which they derive, some hearers still find them offensive. One writer in 1550 considered "idle oaths" like "by cocke" (by God), "by the cross of the mouse foot", and "by Saint Chicken" to be "most abominable blasphemy".[13] The minced oaths "'sblood" and "zounds" were omitted from the Folio edition of Shakespeare's play Othello, probably as a result of Puritan-influenced censorship.[14] In 1941 a U.S. federal judge threatened a lawyer with contempt of court for using the word "darn".[15] Zounds may sound amusing and archaic to the modern ear,[16] yet as late as 1984 the columnist James J. Kilpatrick recalled that "some years ago", after using it in print, he had received complaints that it was blasphemous because of its origin as "God's wounds".[17] (He had written an article entitled "Zounds! Is Reagan Mad?" in the Spartanburg Herald for 12 June 1973,[18] and also used "zounds" in June 1970.[19]) Literature and censorship[edit source | edit]Main article: Minced oaths in literature It is common to find minced oaths in literature. Writers sometimes face the problem of portraying characters who swear, and often include minced oaths instead of profanity in their writing so that they will not offend audiences or incur censorship. Somerset Maugham referred to this problem in his 1919 novel The Moon and Sixpence, where he admitted: Strickland, according to Captain Nichols, did not use exactly the words I have given, but since this book is meant for family reading, I thought it better — at the expense of truth — to put into his mouth language familiar to the domestic circle.[20] Examples[edit source | edit] This section does not cite any references or sources. Australian rock music historian, Ian McFarlane described Clapton as "one of the most important Australian songwriters of the 1970s". On 12 October 1999, Clapton was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame. As from May 2010, he is writing an autobiography, expected for release later in the year. Debut album: Prussian Blue[edit source | edit] In 1972, Clapton returned to Australia and signed a publishing deal with Essex Music and a recording deal with Infinity Records, a subsidiary of Festival Records. His debut single, "Last Train to Marseilles", was released in October. Clapton was backed by Red McKelvie (guitar, ex-The Flying Circus), Kenny Kitching (pedal steel), John Capek (piano, ex-Carson) and John Bois (bass guitar) and Tony Bolton (drums), both from Country Radio (see Greg Quill). At the end of the year he briefly joined a jazz-rock group, Sun, for six weeks into early 1973—he replaced their previous singer Renée Geyer.[3][8] Clapton's debut LP album, Prussian Blue appeared in November—it included "Last Train to Marseilles" from a year earlier—and was produced by Richard Batchens (Blackfeather, Sherbet). Two more singles were issued, "All the Prodigal Children" in October and "I Wanna Be a Survivor" in July 1974. On "Hardly Know Myself" and "I Wanna Be a Survivor" Clapton was backed by The La De Das, with other tracks variously featuring McKelvie, Glenn Cardier (guitar), Russell Dunlop (drums), Mike Perjanik (organ), Trevor Wilson and Mike Lawler (bass guitar) and Ian Bloxham (percussion).[3] According to rock historian Noel McGrath, the album suffered from lack of radio exposure—Australian commercial pop radio was overtaken by a local version of the Drake-Chenault "More Music" format—with a drastically restricted play list shutting out many Australian performers. Due to Clapton's solid grass-roots support, Prussian Blue sold steadily by word of mouth and four years later it was still selling 200-500 copies per week.[10] Critics praised his album which contained songs written while in Europe and Festival kept him on their books.[8] He spoke about the song Prussian Blue in Rolling Stone magazine saying it was "the only song I ever contrived". He said it "came about when I was going through my 'wanna-write-me-a-masterpiece stage, which everyone goes through." He said it took him "six weeks getting all the right clever rhymes and all."[11] Girls on the Avenue[edit source | edit] Clapton's commercial breakthrough came with his single, "Girls on the Avenue", issued in January 1975. Although Festival had little faith in the song—initially releasing it as the B-side of "Travelling Down the Castlereagh"—it was picked up by radio and became a major hit, reaching the No. 4 spot on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart in March.[12] According to Clapton:[13] "Not only did I not feel that Girls On The Avenue was the perfect song, but Festival Records rejected that song six times. They'd say to me, 'What's the chorus, is it 'Don't you slip' or 'Friday night ...'?' I don't know! Why does a song have to have a hook or a chorus? You either like the song or you don't!" The song was written about Clapton's visits to a street near his home to watch girls walking past—it was seen as a paean to prostitutes by the record label, radio commentators and the prostitutes themselves.[8] The song itself took a half an hour to write.[11] He said the only real money he ever made out of Girls on the Avenue was when it became available "on one of those bargain Explosive Hits" (compilations) and they sell about 400,00 each time."[11] According to Clapton, there were three cover versions of Girls on the Avenue that he knew of at the time (1976). One was by Mike McGear, another by ex-Fairport Convention member Trevor Lucas and an obscure Greek version.[11] The album, Girls on the Avenue, also produced by Batchens appeared in April; for touring and session work, he formed the Richard Clapton Band with John Carr on guitar, Ken Firth on bass guitar, Ace Follington on drums, McKelvie on guitar, and Tony Slavich on keyboards.[7] The album cover depicted Clapton with three women—one was a prostitute.[8] Other tracks dealt with similar themes to his debut album. Because of the commercial nature of the song, he was accused of selling out by deliberately writing a commercial song, a claim he refuted.[11] A second single, "Down the Road", was released in June but did not chart.[12] Clapton moved to Melbourne to write new material for his third album, Main Street Jive released in July 1976, again produced by Batchens.[7][8] He contributed six tracks to the film soundtrack for Highway One (1976).[14] The soundtrack included the single "Capricorn Dancer", which reached No. 40 in early 1977 and remains a concert staple.[3][12] Other contributors to the soundtrack, produced and engineered by Batchens, were The Dingoes, Bilgola Bop Band, Skyhooks and Ol' 55 with one track each.[3][14] Clapton toured Europe at the end of 1976 with his band including Slavich, Michael Hegerty (bass guitar, ex-Stars), Kirk Lorange (lead guitar) and Jim Penson (drums, ex-Blackfeather).[3][7] |

Date Posted: 10:56:29 08/17/13 Sat Why the Dow Cratered 225 Points Today By John Divine | More Articles August 15, 2013 | Comments (1) Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over daily movements, we do like to keep an eye on market changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) posted a second straight day of triple-digit losses Thursday, as a combination of weak earnings, rising interest rates, and chaos in Egypt sent stocks spiraling downward. While that trifecta may sound like a sure-fire reason for a sell-off, all is not lost: A seemingly major sell-off like today's still leaves the Dow up more than 17% year to date, and jobless claims last week fell to the lowest number since 2007. The Dow tumbled 225 points, or 1.5%, to end at 15,112 Thursday. Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) was the only stock in the index ending in the green, ticking up 0.1%. With the recent results from rival Deere being applauded by the markets today, Caterpillar benefited from its presence in the same industry. With Deere's farm machinery sales jumping 60% between 2009 and 2012, Wall Street figured now might be the time to invest in machinery makers. Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT ) , however, lost 2.6% as the retailer's second-quarter results underwhelmed. Not only did sales disappoint, but the company also lowered its expectations for this fiscal year, as several other major retailers missed investor's expectations. Wal-Mart, of course, faces increasing price competition from online retailers, as well, threatening its future margins. Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ ) dropped 4.5% Thursday, as tech stocks were the worst performers of the day, falling more than 1.8% as a group. Some of the worst news for HP investors today didn't even come from the company itself: Dell's profits dropped 70% last quarter, an ominous sign for fellow PC makers. Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO ) , incidentally, didn't help the tech sector, either, plummeting 7.2% after a discouraging earnings call in which the communications giant announced it would be trimming 5% of its workforce. Despite the slowly recovering economy, CEO John Chambers called the environment more "mixed and inconsistent" than any prior recovery he's ever seen. While the cautious tone dismayed some investors, it's important to remember that Cisco's earnings are still growing nearly 20% a year -- for the time being. Date Posted: 02:19:46 08/16/13 Fri No one can win hearts like man’s best friend and in honour of this bond between man and canine, Dog Day is celebrated. Take time to appreciate the love and value that dogs bring to our daily lives, and to do your bit for homeless and abused dogs the world over. From keeping us safe working for the emergency services to supporting people who are blind, deaf or disabled, dogs do a lot for us humans, and this is an opportunity to give something back. Recommendations for ways to celebrate Dog Day range from adopting a dog from a rescue home to giving your dog a holistic spa treatment or even buying yourself and your dog matching t-shirts. The National Dog Day Foundation supports all breeds and varieties of dogs and discourages purchasing from unethical backyard breeders and puppy mills; instead, support reputable breeders or adopt from rescue homes. Dog Day has been supported by such high profile individuals as former US President George W Bush whose own dog, Barney the Scottish terrier has his own website and has even starred in a series of short films. So celebrate dogs and their varied talents today, both by taking the time to treat the dogs in your own life and by supporting dogs in need. |

Start Here."More:Happy Father's DaySingle on Valentine's DayCheap Valentine's Day GiftsFlagClosePost a comment Is it ironic that these holidays are on the same day? Maybe not... perhaps this is a sign that we should relax and accept our failures. Maybe it is a sign that we should relax more and then we would have fewer failures. Or maybe you are relaxing too much and this is leading to your failures. I guess you can take it anyway you want. As for me, it's 2 am, I haven't slept in hours and I'm always looking for something to celebrate. So let's start with National Relaxation Day. Did you know that it is not only fun to relax but it's actually vital to a healthy lifestyle? Life is stressful! Have you seen the news lately? There are always so many things to do and never enough hours in the day. We prioritize and compartmentalize and organize and we try to squeeze each and every minute of the day to its fullest. Are you penciling "Rest Time" in your day planner? Our bodies and our minds need time to rest, to recover from a day's events and recuperate so we can feel energized and ready to begin a new day. While those workaholics among us may see it as slacking off, it's actually a great way to be more productive. When you take a reasonable amount of time for rest and relaxation, you can come back with more gusto and oomph (I only say words like "oomph" at 2 am). When you push yourself too hard, you become burnt out and sluggish and you will not be as productive. So sit back and relax and take some time to honor National Relaxation Day. Let us not forget that August 15th is such a glorious day it requires two national holidays. It is also National Failures Day. Put away that bottle of bourbon, it's not time to wallow in self-pity. No, instead we are going to embrace our failures and recognize that without them we could never grow as individuals. Life is all about choices and with those choices come consequences. Sometimes we make the wrong choices and we may not like those consequences. Sometimes we try our hardest and our best just isn't good enough. It's true that some of us fail a bit more often that others but hey, no one's calling names here. Seriously, we all make mistakes and if you try to be perfect all the time, you're just going to fail at that as well. The key is not to avoid failure but to learn from it when it occurs and continue trying. We will fail as individuals, we often fail as groups. Marriages fail, friendships fail, even countries and their leaders can fail. It's what makes the world go round, what makes us tick. Failures are often about perception as well. A failure to one person may look different in the eyes of another. Today, in honor of National Failures Day, take a look at your life and some of your failures. Failures are often about perception as well. A failure to one person may look different in the eyes of another. Was there times that what you thought was a failure turned out to be a blessing in disguise? Has someone ever accused you of being a failure and it motivated you to prove them wrong? In what ways have the failures of others affected your life? When you look at your failures, have you learned from them? If given the chance to do it all over again, would you change anything? Today, August 15th, let's take a moment to honor both National Relaxation Day and National Failures Day. |

Date Posted: 01:49:32 08/16/13 Fri November 9 in German history From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Berlin, 9 November 1918, Philipp Scheidemann proclaims the Republic. 9 November has been the date of several important events in German history. The term Schicksalstag (Destiny day) has been occasionally used by historians and journalists since shortly after World War II, but its current widespread use started with the events of 1989 when virtually all German media picked up the term. There are five major events in German history that are connected to 9 November: 1848: After being arrested in the Vienna revolts, liberal leader Robert Blum is executed. The execution is often seen as a symbolic event for the ultimate failure of the Revolutions of 1848 in the German states. 1918: Monarchy in Germany ends when Kaiser Wilhelm II is dethroned in the November Revolution. Philipp Scheidemann proclaims the Weimar Republic from a window of the Reichstag. Two hours later Karl Liebknecht proclaims a "Free Socialist Republic" from a balcony of the Berliner Stadtschloss. Der 9. November (The Ninth of November) is the title of a novel by Bernhard Kellermann published in Germany that told the story of the German insurrection of 1918. 1923: The Beer Hall Putsch, from 8 to 9 November, marks the emergence of the Nazi Party as an important player on Germany's political landscape. 1938: In the Kristallnacht, from 9 to 10 November, synagogues and Jewish property are burned and destroyed on a large scale. More than 1,300 Jews are killed. 1989: The fall of the Berlin Wall ends German separation and starts a series of events that ultimately lead to the German reunification and the Fall of Communism in eastern Europe. November 9 was considered as the date for German Unity Day, but as it was also the anniversary of Kristallnacht, this date was considered inappropriate as a national holiday. The date of the formal reunification of Germany, 3 October 1990, therefore, was chosen as the date for the holiday instead. The establishment of the SS in 1925 is sometimes mentioned as having taken place on 9 November as well. Europe Day From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Europe Day Flag of Europe deployed in Strasbourg (France) during Europe Day 2009. Observed by European Union Council of Europe Europe Type International Significance Establishment of the Council of Europe / Date of the Schuman Declaration Date 5 May and 9 May In Europe, Europe Day is an annual celebration of peace and unity in Europe. There are two separate designations of Europe Day: 5 May for the Council of Europe, and 9 May for the European Union (EU).[1] For the EU, the day is also known as Schuman Day, commemorating the historical declaration by French foreign minister Robert Schuman.[2] The Council of Europe's day reflects its own establishment in 1949, while the European Union's day celebrates the day the EU's predecessor was proposed in 1950. Europe Day is one of a number of European symbols designed to foster unity among Europeans. Contents [hide] 1 Background 2 Observance 3 Coincidence 4 See also 5 References 6 External links Background[edit] The Council of Europe was founded on 5 May 1949, and hence it chose that day for its celebrations when it established the holiday in 1964. In 1985, the European Communities (which later became the European Union) adopted the European symbols of the Council of Europe such as the Flag of Europe. However, the Community leaders decided to hold their Europe Day in commemoration of the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950. The declaration proposed the pooling of French and West German coal and steel industries, leading to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, the first European Community, and hence is considered a principle founding moment. Hence, at the 1985 Milan European Council, 29 September was adopted as the EU's flag day. The European Constitution would have legally enshrined all the European symbols in the EU treaties, however the treaty failed and usage would continue only in the present de facto manner. The Constitution's replacement, the Treaty of Lisbon, contains a declaration by sixteen members supporting the symbols.[3] The European Parliament formally recognised the 9 May holiday in October 2008.[4] Observance[edit] 9 May is celebrated in various forms in most member states of the European Union and EU candidate countries such as Turkey.[5] Due to the political nature of the day, it sees attempts at teaching people about the European Union and speaking in support of European integration.[6] The flag as another symbol plays a major role in general celebrations. Despite a preference for 9 May, with the European Union's greater visibility, 5 May is still observed by some Europeans due to the Council's role in seeking to defend human rights, parliamentary democracy, and the rule of law. In contrast, the Schuman declaration was merely proposing the pooling of French and West German coal and steel. Ukraine since 2003 celebrates Europe Day on the third Saturday of May.[7] |

Global stocks were buoyed by some upbeat economic news and comments from the head of Atlanta’s Federal Reserve (there are 12 US central banks across North America). President Lockhart seemed not overly keen to taper Quantitative Easing (QE) in a speech overnight. Economists were focused on this month’s consumer confidence reading, which rose by 3.5 per cent for August at 11.30am (AEST). Perhaps this shouldn’t come as a huge surprise however, with the federal election being called early this month together with an RBA interest rate cut. The reporting season is heating up today (busiest day of the earnings season so far). Computershare (CPU), Leighton Holdings (LEI), CSL and OZ Minerals have already issued their profit results. CPU, the world’s biggest share registry disappointed the market with a 9.2 per cent slump in full year profit. Earnings were driven by US acquisitions rather than activity from its core business. This environment remains challenging for CPU (the more corporate actions, M&As and company activity – the better from a revenue standpoint). CPU maintained its $0.14 dividend and will be paid to eligible shareholders on 17 September. CPU is down 5.1 per cent. Construction company, LEI more than tripled its profit, however warned that challenges remain in the sector. LEI shares are down 5.5 per cent. Blood products and vaccine provider, CSL is down 2.8 per cent despite announcing a 19 per cent rise in full year profit, thanks in part to better sales of an infection fighting infusion in North America and Europe. Australia’s biggest listed company, Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) cracked through an all-time high of $75 briefly, only to fall back to $73.86 at around 12.30pm. At lunch, 817.9 million shares changed hands, worth $2.5 billion. 416 stocks are higher, 382 are in the red and 268 are unchanged. Enjoy your afternoon. Stewart MELBOURNE--Qantas Airways Ltd. (QAN.AU) aims to build its global network and expand further in Asia over the year ahead despite a volatile market and record fuel costs, the boss of Australia's flag carrier said. "I'm realistic about market conditions. It's tough out there," Chief Executive Alan Joyce said in a speech Wednesday. Still, despite the pressures facing the airline industry Qantas is increasing the frequency of several flights and starting a new route between Perth and Auckland, he said. Mr. Joyce said Qantas had found ways to do maintenance on aircraft more efficiently to increase time in the air. For example, a number of Airbus A380 jets that spend weekends on the ground in Perth will from November be used to increase the frequency of flights between Sydney and Hong Kong to five times a week from four currently, without increasing capital expenditure. Speaking at an American Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Melbourne, Mr. Joyce said Qantas, among other changes, would also increase the frequency of Boeing 747s flying between Brisbane and Los Angeles to daily from 6 times a week. And, even as the company beds down its new partnership with Emirates, Qantas continues to look at opportunities in Asia, with the market in Japan in particular offering "huge" growth potential, Mr. Joyce said. Australia Shares End Flat After Earnings Reports Spark Profit-Taking 14/08/2013 4:59PM By David Rogers SYDNEY--Australian shares were capped by profit-taking Wednesday after corporate earnings, dividends and outlook statements were generally weaker than the market's bullish market expectations. But traders expected ongoing support for shares on the back of lower interest rates, a weaker Australian dollar and an improving global economy. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 closed flat at 5157.4 points after hitting a three-month high of 5168.2 in early trading. Commonwealth Bank of Australia, CSL Limited, Computershare, Leighton Holdings and OZ Minerals fell 1.1%-6.3% after their earnings reports. Among companies that rose on stronger-than-expected results, WorleyParsons, Southern Cross Media, SAI Global and Carsales.com gained 3.4%-8.1%. Dips in the index were limited to 5143.0 and share trading value was a very solid 5.5 billion Australian dollars (US$5.0 billion) versus the 200-day average of A$4.2 billion. Traders said investors were keen to buy into weakness caused by profit-taking. "There's probably a bit more interest on the buy side," said Macquarie Private Wealth investment adviser John Milroy. "Clients have been more willing to get involved this month after holding their breath before reporting season. Mining services companies have had pretty good results after leading the pullback in the market this year. The market had priced that sector for complete disaster." WorleyParsons rose after the mining and energy services company forecast stronger fiscal 2014 earnings after fiscal 2013 earnings slumped 8% to A$322.1 million. The fall came as companies in a number of its key markets sought to cut costs in the face of weaker commodity prices. IG market strategist Stan Shamu said shares in Commonwealth Bank, and CSL, a biopharmaceutical company, were likely to be well supported on dips. CSL should be supported by the fact that the company is considering another share buyback, Mr. Shamu said. "After a big run-up into the result, there was always a risk that CBA's result would be greeted by sellers unless it came in significantly above estimates particularly on the dividend front," Mr. Shamu said. "It seems traders are the likely culprits of the selling in CBA today and perhaps once the noise is out of the way, we will actually see real money investors underpin gains in the bank's shares going forward." Westpac, ANZ and National Australia Bank shares rose 0.8%-1.1%, suggesting that traders rotated from CBA to the other banks. Traders weren't overly concerned by a rise in U.S. bond yields, which followed the release of stronger-than-expected core U.S. retail sales data last night. The 10-year yield rose 11 basis points to 2.72%, near a three-year high of 2.75% struck earlier this month. "It reflects what looks to be imminent tapering of QE, but the U.S. share market is becoming more comfortable with that prospect because it's being supported by better-than-expected earnings data," Macquarie's Mr. Milroy said. Goldman Sachs last night said the U.S. S&P 500 would rise 8% to 1,825 in the next 12 months as economic growth gains momentum. Strategist David Kostin argued that rising interest rates reflect a better economy. Macquarie Equities expects the S&P/ASX 200 to rise above 5300 over the next 12 months. Date Posted: 22:33:57 08/14/13 Wed .More:LizardsCelebrate ChristmasKwanzaa KinaraMemorial Day for Kids.FlagClose Post a commentWhat can we celebrate on August 14th? August 14th is a holiday for creamsicles, lizards, romance, money and more. Loving husbands, senior citizens and other celebrants mark August 14th as a holiday for many reasons. Let's take a look at several popular August 14th holidays (arranged alphabetically). Creamsicle Day Slurp! Can anything beat a frosty creamsicle on a hot summer day? August 14th is Creamsicle Day, so calories don't count - as long as you finish your creamsicle before it melts right down your arm. What is a creamsicle? Originally produced as a brand-name frozen dessert on a stick, a creamsicle is an ice cream popsicle. The inside of a creamsicle usually contains vanilla ice cream, which is coated with a fruit-flavored ice (most often orange). The fudgsicle, a related item, is a solid frozen pop made of chocolate ice cream (or chocolate-flavored ice). Financial Awareness Day How well do you know your money? August 14th is Financial Awareness Day. Accounting groups and economic advisors present financial planning classes and cash management seminars on this fiscally responsible holiday each summer. Even online gaming sites get into the act on Financial Awareness Day, highlighting activities that raise public awareness of money matters. Husbands in Love Day August 14th is Husbands in Love Day, celebrating masculine spouses who still bring the magic to marriage. Are you a husband in love with your wife? Are you a wife who still feels loved by your husband? If you are, then August 14th is for you. Modern romantic novelist Nicholas Sparks (Dear John, The Last Song, Message in a Bottle, Nights in Rodanthe, The Notebook and A Walk to Remember) said this about husbands in love: "I think that men know how to romance a woman and most do it well, at least for a time, otherwise women wouldn't marry them. The problem is that most of them begin to rest on their laurels." Would you agree or disagree with Nicholas Sparks on this point? Perhaps coincidentally, August 14th is also Romance Day (see below). Summer Romance Day Summer romance is the stuff of paperback novels and fairytales, but this elusive enchantment may come to life on August 14th. It's Summer Romance Day. Fictional fantasies of flirtations and flings, liaisons and love stories and affairs of the heart are celebrated on this occasion. Why not sweeten (or spice) things up a bit with the one you love on August 14th? After all, it's Summer Romance Day. World Lizard Day Globally, geckos and other reptilian wonders are feted on August 14th. It's World Lizard Day. Libraries create special displays of reptile-related books. Toy stores showcase dinosaurs and lizard toys in their front windows. Science museums offer lizard lectures, exhibits, grand gila events and tours to mark World Lizard Day on August 14th. Many museums even promote discounted admission prices to celebrate World Lizard Day on August 14th. Don't be dragon your feet on August 14th. Iguana have a great time on World Lizard Day ... don't you? Chameleon along for reptilian fun. Special Saints Days (Various) The Calendar of the Saints lists the following for August 14th: Aimo Taparelli, Anastasius, Antony Primaldi and Companions, Arnulf of Soissons, Athanasia, Demetrius, Domingo Ibáñez de Erquicia, Eberhard of Einsiedeln, Eusebius of Palestine, Eusebius of Rome, Fachanan, Juliana Puricelli, Marcellus of Apamaea, Maximillian Kolbe, Sanctes Brancasino, Ursicius and Werenfridus. Notable Anniversaries on August 14th: The first published book (to carry a printed date mark) was issued on August 14, 1457, three years after the introduction of the Gutenberg printing press. Felix the Cat first appeared in Feline Follies on August 14, 1919, created by Otto Messmer and Pat Sullivan. Animation fans mark August 14th as the birthday of Felix the Cat. On August 14, 1941, 32nd U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill signed the Atlantic Charter. This document helped to pave the way for such future multi-national agreements as the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Japan surrendered to the Allied Forces (via cable message) on August 14, 1945. Originally known as V.J. Day (or Victory Over Japan Day), August 14th celebrates the end of World War II. The final surrender ceremony took place aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945, and 33rd U.S. President Harry S. Truman officially recognized September 2nd as V.J. Day (or Victory in the Pacific Day). Sonny and Cher Bono grabbed the top of the American popular music charts on August 14, 1965, with their hit single, "I Got You, Babe." On August 14, 1995, North Carolinian Shannon Faulkner became the first female cadet at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, after winning a discrimination lawsuit filed against the American military academy. Various Other August 14th Holidays August 14th is also Assumption Eve (France), Bahrain Independence Day (1971), Fairies' Anniversary of Snick-Snacker's Deerk Foot (Fairy), Feast of St. Dubricius the Confessor, Festival of Sassari (Sardinia), Garage Sale Day (varies), Honey Spas Holiday (Russia), La Torta dei Fieschi (Italy), Liberty Tree Day (Massachusetts) and Navajo Code Talkers Day. The history of television in Australia can be traced back to an announcement from the Menzies' government concerning plans for television services in Sydney and Melbourne.[1] The new medium was introduced by Bruce Gyngell with the words "Good evening, and welcome to television".[2] Colour television was introduced in 1975, while subscription television, initially on the Galaxy platform, began in the mid-1990s. Digital terrestrial television was introduced on 1 January 2001 in Australia's five largest capital cities, later to be expanded to smaller cities and regional areas. As well as this, commercial television services in Sydney and Melbourne are planned with "any other capital city where it is felt that the applicant's capacity to provide a service justifies the issue of a licence".[5] 1953 January: The Menzies government amends the 1948 Broadcasting Act to provide legislative framework for commercial television licenses.[6] 1954 The Royal Commission on television affirms the need to introduce television under a dual system of ownership, similarly to the Menzies plan.[7] 1956 13 July: Test transmissions commence in Sydney on TCN-9 in monochome.[8] 16 July: HSV-7 Melbourne commences test transmissions in monochrome.[9] 16 September: TCN-9 Sydney launches at 7.00pm. Date Posted: 13:17:12 08/14/13 Wed Avoiding clichés What is a cliché? Here are some examples of familiar clichéd expressions: We’re still as sick as a parrot about the result. When it’s all said and done, at the end of the day, I can say I made a difference in the world. The first comes from a newspaper, the second from the transcript of a television news programme. Clichés are words and phrases that have been used so often that they’re no longer very interesting or effective. They may have started out as a colourful, inventive phrase, like as sick as a parrot, but they’ve been picked up and used so widely and indiscriminately that they’ve lost their impact and become stale. Clichés are part of our everyday speech – we often don’t realize that we’re using them. They also occur especially frequently in certain types of writing (such as journalism) or areas of activity (such as sport, business, or politics), as demonstrated by the two examples above. What’s wrong with using clichés? When you’re writing on a more formal level, it’s better to try to avoid using clichés. They tend to annoy people, especially if they’re overused, and they may even create an impression of laziness or a lack of careful thought. Some people just tune out when they hear a cliché and so they may miss the point that you’re trying to make. Here’s a list of some common clichés to look out for and avoid: at the end of the day back on track the fact of the matter few and far between a level playing field in this day and age to all intents and purposes when all’s said and done in the final analysis come full circle par for the course think outside the box avoid someone or something like the plague in the current climate mass exodus at this moment in time the path of least resistance a baptism of fire in any way, shape, or form fit for purpose Action points Once you’ve spotted a cliché in your writing, you need to rephrase your sentence. Here are some tips and strategies to help you do this. 1. Think about what the cliché actually means Think about the basic sense of the expression: what does it actually mean? You’ll probably find that some key words come to mind either as synonyms or as ‘ingredients’ of the overall meaning. Now you can: o use one of these key words to replace the cliché altogether o look them up in a thesaurus to find other alternatives If you find it difficult to come up with the basic meaning, try looking the cliché up in a dictionary. Then you can use the words in the dictionary definition as a starting point for finding suitable synonyms in a thesaurus. 2. Decide whether you actually need the expression at all Quite a lot of clichés are just long-winded ‘fillers’, i.e. words or groups of words used just to maintain the flow of speech, or to pad out a speech or piece of writing. If you identify a clichéd expression of this sort, you can just remove it altogether. Wordy, overused phrases might increase the length of a piece of writing but they won’t improve its general quality. 3. Rewrite your sentence Here are some examples of how you might go about replacing clichés in your writing. First you’ll see a sentence containing a cliché (in bold). The second column gives its meaning, with key words highlighted in bold, the third gives some suggestions for how to take action, and in the final column the original sentence is rewritten without the cliché. Original sentence Meaning or key words Suggestions for action Rewritten sentence In this day and age, websites are one of the most significant public faces of any organization. nowadays, today use one of the key words instead, or look them up in a thesaurus Today, websites are one of the most significant public faces of any organization. His first job, in an industrial area of the UK, proved to be a baptism of fire. a difficult introduction to a new job or activity use the key words or find synonyms in a thesaurus His first job, in an industrial area of the UK, proved to be a difficult start to his career. The long-term prospects for the service are looking fairly bleak at this moment in time. now use the key word or look up an alternative The long-term prospects for the service are currently looking fairly bleak. At the end of the day, it is the minister himself who has to make the decision. finally, ultimately use one of the key words or look up alternatives Ultimately, it is the minister himself who has to make the decision. The authorities announced that they would not tolerate drugs within the sport in any way, shape, or form. under any circumstances mainly used for emphasis and can be omitted without changing the meaning The authorities announced that they would not tolerate drugs within the sport. In the closing scene, the film comes full circle. return to a previous position or situation reword along the lines of the meaning In the closing scenes, the film returns to the ideas with which it began. The 1970s were a time when detention without trial was par for the course. what is normal or expected in a certain situation reword along the lines of the meaning, use the key word, or look up synonyms for it The 1970s were a time when detention without trial was a normal occurrence. Children’s services in the city’s hospitals were not fit for purpose, according to the report. meet the required standards reword using the meaning given, or find synonyms for the key words Children’s services in the city’s hospitals were not meeting the required standards, according to the report The company considers that this requirement is, to all intents and purposes, impossible to achieve. in all important respects mainly used for emphasis and can often be omitted The company considers that this requirement is impossible to achieve. With a troubled domestic agenda, the president took the path of least resistance. the easiest course of action reword along the lines of the meaning given or find synonyms for the key words With a troubled domestic agenda, the president chose the easiest course of action. Key points While you probably can’t avoid clichés altogether, remember: Clichés can be a barrier to communication and clear expression. Clichés can often be reduced to just one or two words that convey your meaning in a clearer or more original way. Clichés can sometimes be removed completely without the meaning of a sentence being affected. She then studied and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours at the University of Adelaide, and completed a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of South Australia.[13][15][16] While at university, she became involved with the leadership of the Adelaide University Labor Club in 1988,[2] and has been a delegate to the South Australian Labor Party State Convention every year since 1989, (with the exception of 1995).[17] She also worked part-time for the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), and also gained a position on the National Executive of the National Union of Students. Her time at university was one where a substantial number of contemporaries became Australian politicians. Former senator Natasha Stott Despoja was a contemporary, along with current Premier of South Australia, Jay Weatherill, whom Wong dated while at university, and Mark Butler, Labor MHR for Port Adelaide.[2][13][14] Career[edit source | edit]Wong graduated from university in 1992, and continued her association with the CFMEU as an industrial officer. She was admitted to the South Australian Bar in 1993. During 1995 and 1996, Wong acted as an advisor to the timber union and to the newly-elected New South Wales state government, specialising in the area of forest policy in the middle of the fierce 1990s environmental battles over logging in NSW.[18] On returning to Adelaide, Wong began practising law, working as a solicitor at the firm Duncan and Hannon (1996-1999). From 1999 to 2002, she worked as a legal officer with the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union. During this time she also won a position on the ALP's state executive. During her legal career (1996-2002), Wong appeared 11 times before the Australian Industrial Relations Commission, 15 times before the South Australian Industrial Relations Court, 8 times before the South Australian Industrial Relations Commission, 3 times before the South Australian Workers Compensation Appeal Tribunal and 10 times before the South Australian Workers Compensation Tribunal.[19] Wong ran for pre-selection for the Senate in 2001, and was selected for the top position on the Labor Party's South Australian ticket. She was elected at the 2001 election, her term commencing on 1 July 2002. Wong is a member of EMILY's List Australia, the support network for Labor women, and sat on a number of Senate committees, primarily those related to economics. In June 2005 Wong was appointed Shadow Minister for Employment and Workforce Participation, and Shadow Minister for Corporate Governance and Responsibility. Following the reshuffle in December 2006, she became responsible for the portfolios of Public Administration and Accountability, Corporate Governance and Responsibility, and Workforce Participation. In December 2007, in the wake of the Labor Party victory in the 2007 election, Wong was appointed Minister for Climate Change and Water. She accompanied then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to Bali for the international climate change talks. Wong led final negotiations as Chair of the United Nations Working Group in the closing days of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in December 2007,[20] shortly after her appointment as Minister for Climate Change and Water. In September 2010 Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced Wong had been promoted to succeed Lindsay Tanner as Minister for Finance and Deregulation.[21][22] In February 2013 Wong was appointed Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate, following the resignation of Chris Evans, the then Government Leader in the Senate.[citation needed] In June 2013, following Stephen Conroy's resignation, she became the first female to be appointed Leader of the Government in the Senate.[citation needed] Personal life[edit source | edit]Wong is openly lesbian, and was the first sitting member of the Australian Labor Party to come out while still in parliament.[when?][23] Her partner, Sophie Allouache, is a public servant and former University of Adelaide Students' Association president. In 2010, Wong was selected by readers of samesame.com.au as one of the 25 most influential lesbian Australians.[24] Although her father remains overseas, they keep in touch.[14] In December 2011, Allouache gave birth to their first child, Alexandra,[25] after announcing the IVF-assisted pregnancy using donor sperm in August 2011.[26] Wong is a practising Christian, attending Pilgrim Uniting Church in Adelaide.[14] From and including: Monday, 1 July 2002 To and including: Wednesday, 14 August 2013 Result: 4063 days It is 4063 days from the start date to the end date, end date included Or 11 years, 1 month, 14 days including the end date |
