Red Meat Author(s) Max Cannon Website http://www.redmeat.com/ Current status / schedule weekly Launch date 1989 Genre(s) comic strip Max Cannon's Red Meat is an independent comic strip begun in 1989. It appears in over 75 alternative weeklies and college papers in the United States and in other countries.[1] Since 1996, it has been available for reading on the web. Contents [hide] 1 Style 2 Characters 3 Publication 4 References 5 External links Style[edit]The strip features a cast of characters with abnormal personalities. A visual hallmark of the strip is the almost total lack of movement of the characters from panel to panel and a "Featureless Void" of no background. Cannon has said that he wanted Red Meat "to have a look that was somewhere between clip art and arresting minimalism, so that the text was more important than the art itself,".[2] Red Meat features "slug lines" at the top of each comic which are frequently alliterative. For example, "Official pace car of the apocalypse" or "puckered piehole of the pointless". Characters[edit]Many of the strip's human characters are 1950s caricatures. Main article: List of Red Meat characters Bug-Eyed Earl - A demented person, slightly resembling Edgar Allan Poe or Charles Pierre Baudelaire but a lot more like Steve Buscemi. Earl's appearances generally involve him telling a surreal, strange, and usually disgusting anecdote. Milkman Dan - The local milkman; eccentric and hostile towards people and animals, especially Karen, a neighborhood child. Constantly battling against sobriety. Dan also dresses as a cow in his guise as McMoo, the anti-drug cow.[3][4] Ted Johnson - Cannon has stated that Ted is based on his own father. He has a taste for gruesome sexual fetishes and cruel hobbies. Publication[edit]The strip was briefly picked up by The Arizona Daily Wildcat, the student run newspaper of the University of Arizona, in 1989. It was then picked up by the Tucson Weekly.[5] Cannon is also creator of the Comedy Central animated webshow, Shadow Rock (based on the Red Meat strip). The 10 episodes are now available on Atom.com.[6] In 2009, Max Cannon urged his readers to contact the editors of their local alternative weekly papers in an effort to save the comics printed within.[7] Three collections of the strips have been released: Red Meat (1997) ISBN 0-312-18302-X More Red Meat (1998) ISBN 0-312-19514-1 Red Meat Gold (2005) ISBN 0-312-33014-6 References[edit]^ Lambiek comic shop and studio in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2007-09-21). Date Posted: 20:57:32 08/11/13 Sun Your Guide to Writing a Great Stump Speech by Joe Garecht Everybody loves a great stump speech… You know, one that makes the crowds go wild, generates tons of local press coverage, and leaves your opponent gasping for air. Everybody loves a great stump speech, but few candidates are capable of writing and delivering a true winner. This is your guide to developing a meaningful, passionate, memorable stump speech. What is a “Stump Speech?” First things first… what exactly do we mean by “stump speech?” Simply put, a stump speech is a set of prepared remarks that a candidate uses over and over again during his or her campaign (or, “on the stump”). These remarks are used over and over again because they (a) are well crafted and refer back to the message of the campaign, and (b) are able to be delivered by the candidate from memory (that’s right: memorized). In fact, you shouldn’t have just one, but several versions of your stump speech. Here’s some advice we wrote in Local Victory’s How to Win ANY Election: Every campaign should have not one, but several stump speeches prepared: a 30 second “commercial” that the candidate can give when meeting a prospective voter, a 5 minute “quickie” that the candidate can give when asked to deliver remarks at a meeting or event that is not the campaign’s, and a 10-12 minute classic “stump speech” to give at rallies and other gatherings. The stump speech should be crafted, edited, and written out before hand. It should be practiced over and over again so that the candidate can deliver it without notes, and he or she should know it so well that they can modify it for the specific event, dropping a line here, adding an issue of importance there. How to Write a Stump Speech that Works Great stump speeches take time, thought and practice. Here are five ways to make sure that your stump speech works: 1. Focus on Your Message Everything in your campaign needs to be focused on your campaign message. (If you need help with your messaging, read Message: The King of All Political Tactics). It’s no different with your speeches… make sure they are squarely focused on your campaign message, and the issues that support your message. If you think your campaign message is about crime and safety, yet your off the cuff remarks spend 90% of their time delving into the economy, you can bet the voters are going to think your campaign is about the economy, not crime. 2. Be Logical People find it hard to follow speeches that don’t follow a logical progression. If you’re talking about your background and why you are a good fit for the job, don’t veer off on a tangent about the line-item veto before getting back to your bio. If you say you have a three point program, give all three points, without having any of those points use “sub-points.” Remember, you may have heard this speech a hundred times, but it has to make sense to someone hearing it for the first time. 3. Beware of Comedy and Satire Be very, very careful when using comedy and satire in your stump speech. Yes, a couple of funny lines here and there can bring some levity to your talk and make the crowd more receptive to your message… but a long comedic monologue will leave them wondering if you are really a serious candidate. Likewise, beware of comedy or satire that can be misconstrued. Don’t use mocking tones, and don’t “pretend” to be your opponent by satirically spouting off her positions. The audience may not get it. 4. Be Passionate! Ronald Reagan. Barack Obama. Bill Clinton. Teddy Roosevelt. Love their policies or hate them, each regularly gave speeches that were memorable because they were passionate. Bring the passion you feel for the issues you are advancing to your stump speech. If you’re not excited, why should voters be? 5. Err on the Short Side Your stump speech shouldn’t be too short… if it is, people will wonder why they bothered coming out to your campaign rally. That being said, your speech definitely should not be too long. There’s only one thing worse than a candidate that steps up to the microphone and gives a 60 second speech… a candidate that stands up at a dinner and talks for an hour. If you have to choose whether to talk too long or too short, pick too short… your audience has a short attention span. Just make sure your speech is remarkable, no matter the length. Date Posted: 20:38:26 08/11/13 Sun Stump speech (politics)From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search This article needs attention from an expert on the subject. Please add a reason or a talk parameter to this template to explain the issue with the article. Consider associating this request with a WikiProject. (June 2010) Stump Speaking (1853-54), George Caleb BinghamA political stump speech is a standard speech used by a politician running for office.[1] Contents [hide] 1 Origins 2 U.S. campaigns 3 References 4 External links Origins[edit source | edit]The term is derived from the custom in 19th century in America when political candidates campaigning from town to town stood upon a cut down tree's stump to deliver a standard speech.[2] Because the busy pace of campaigning often forces candidates to address people several times per week or even per day, the candidate and his or her staff will usually write a single speech to be delivered at most public appearances.[3] The beginning of the speech is usually tweaked to include mentions of local elected officials and campaign staff, with local references sometimes peppered throughout, but most of the speech remains identical from day to day. The need for a stump speech stems from a desire to keep candidates focused on their message and to consistently present certain arguments or point out certain aspects of their political platform. Candidates will often use major events to unveil a new or substantially revised stump speech. U.S. campaigns[edit source | edit]In presidential campaigns in the U.S., a candidate's speech at his or her party's presidential nominating convention usually forms the basis for the stump speech for the duration of the national campaign. Stump speeches are not meant to generate news, outside of local media covering a candidate's appearance. National media usually ignore their contents in their daily news coverage. The predictability of stump speeches allows reporters to generally know when a candidate is preparing to wrap up. A famous example of this comes from Governor of New York Nelson Rockefeller, who would constantly use the phrase "the brotherhood of man, under the fatherhood of God" toward the end of his speeches during his multiple bids for the Republican Party presidential nomination. Reporters covering Rockefeller came to abbreviate the expression as BOMFOG.[4] References[edit source | edit]^ "Stump speech". Dictionary.com. Retrieved 2012-11-07. ^ "Stump". Date Posted: 16:56:47 08/11/13 Sun From today's featured article Ranavalona I (c. 1778–1861) ruled the Kingdom of Madagascar from 1828 to 1861. By succeeding upon the death of her young husband, Radama I, Ranavalona became the first female sovereign in the Merina royal line since its founding in 1540. After initial tolerance of European influence she adopted a policy of isolationism, reducing Madagascar's economic and political ties with European powers, developing the island's industrial manufacturing capacity, improving the government's bureaucratic organization and military strength, and taking vigorous measures to eradicate the small but growing Malagasy Christian movement. The combination of widespread disease, harsh measures of justice, regular military campaigns to pacify outlying provinces and difficult statute labor for public works projects resulted in a high mortality rate among soldiers and civilians alike during her 33-year reign. French intermediaries unsuccessfully tried to use divisions between traditionalist and pro-European factions at court to hasten the succession of her son, Radama II. Her European contemporaries generally condemned her policies and characterized her as a tyrant at best and insane at worst, characterizations that persisted in Western scholarly literature until the mid-1970s. Recent research has recast Ranavalona's actions as those of a queen attempting to expand her empire while protecting Malagasy sovereignty against the encroachment of European cultural and political influence. I had the pleasure of spending time in Queanbeyan, where about 30 volunteers for Mike Kelly and Labor in the marginal seat of Eden-Monaro came back from a morning's door-knocking and were getting ready for a community forum on the NBN. I hope you know how much your support means for the future of Australia, and that you’re part of something really special. Record numbers of Australians are banding together and pouring their hearts, time, donations and talents into this campaign – and what you've achieved already in week one is just incredible. You can support Kevin in tonight’s debate, by jumping on Twitter or Facebook (#ýdebate). It kicks off at 6:30pm. After all these years I know he doesn't get too nervous about these things, but he definitely appreciates all your encouragement. Thanks so much, and keep up the good work! Thérèse Rein PS: Mike tells me many locals are deeply concerned that a Coalition government would sell off the iconic Snowy Mountain Scheme – just like they are selling off school ovals in Queensland to developers. Date Posted: 13:00:09 08/11/13 Sun Impact of Pope's message to Muslims for end of Ramadan (Vatican Radio) Muslims around the world have been marking the end of their holy month of Ramadan which concluded with the feast of Eid al-Fitr on Thursday. Pope Francis sent a personal message marking this special feast day, expressing his “esteem and friendship for all Muslims, especially those who are religious leaders.” Focusing on the theme ‘Promoting mutual respect through education’, the message stresses the importance of thinking, speaking and writing respectfully about others and always avoiding unfair criticism or defamation. Families, schools, religious teaching and the media, it says, all have a role to play in achieving this goal. Underlining the importance of positive interreligious relations, the Pope says Christians and Muslims are called to respect the teachings, symbols, values and especially the leaders and places of worship of the other religion. To find out more about the impact of this papal message on Christian-Muslim dialogue, Philippa Hitchen spoke to Archbishop Kevin McDonald, head of the English and Welsh bishops’ office for interfaith relations: Listen; "I think it's very significant because Pope Francis has emerged as an international figure, people are talking about him and he's very much part of the landscape so I think the fact that he is sending a message in person has been very well received.... At the Bishops Conference we circulate it to all dioceses and send it to a long list of Muslim contacts, but we also encourage priests at the local level to take it round to their mosques....so it has quite a wide circulation.... I think there is a lot of goodwill in England....we had this awful event of the killing of Lee Rigby and shortly after that, I and other religious leaders were invited to the local mosque and we had a very good meeting.....I felt there was a very real sense that we need to do something together...I think there's an increasing number of people in this country who do have a sense that they need to nurture their young people in a different kind of way and to take steps to counteract any danger of radicalisation - the picture is mixed but there are a lot of positive signs....." Date Posted: 15:35:21 08/10/13 Sat Message from Lisa Maclean to INSP members Lisa Maclean Dear members, After 10 fantastic years with Big Issue and INSP I’m moving on from INSP on the 9th August. It has been a wonderful experience to work for INSP and street papers. I believe in street papers and it has been inspiring to have the opportunity to work alongside you and to see the amazing work you do every day that changes lives. 123 papers, 28,000 vendors working every year, 6 million readers reached every edition- this is one special network. Thank you for being such brilliant colleagues. It feels like an appropriate time to move on; we have a really a supportive board, a committed, experienced staff team, and wonderful partners behind us. INSP is in great shape. I am moving on to take up an international entrepreneurship Fellowship and as the first social enterprise leader to be offered a place, I will put all of my INSP experiences to really good use. Our Development Manager, Maree Aldam, will be stepping up to a General Manager’s role in the interim period, supported by former INSP President and Big Issue Scotland co-founder Mel Young who is based in Scotland. Maree is passionate about street papers and will do a great job. The board will manage an open recruitment process for the INSP Director’s position later in the year and members will be kept informed about this as we move forward. I’d like to take this opportunity to give a huge thanks to my staff and volunteer team who dedicate masses of time, energy and passion to INSP, and to our board members- past and present- for sharing their experiences and working so hard to develop and grow INSP. And a special thank goes to my wonderful Chairperson Serge Lareault who generously gives his leadership, support, enthusiasm and a brilliant sense of humour to INSP and who has taught me so much. I loved seeing so many of you in Munich at what was my very last INSP conference and Awards. I really felt a strong sense of unity amongst us as we look to find the best pathway forward for street papers and our great network. It was wonderful to be a part of that, and we had a lot of fun together. I look forward to seeing INSP continue to grow and thrive in the future, supporting street papers and vendors everywhere. Please do keep in touch- I would love to hear from you and know how you are all doing: lisamaclean77(at)googlemail.com With thanks and lots of love, Lisa |

Date Posted: 15:15:53 08/10/13 Sat Success not survival: Street Papers in the digital age .NewsSally Brammall Aug 1, 2013 Share on printShare on emailShare on stumbleuponShare on twitter. ...Creative use of technology is bringing vendors and customers together, reports Sally Brammall from the INSP's 2013 conference As the impact of the recent economic downturn hits hard across all quarters of the globe, it has never been more imperative to ensure that street papers are there for those people who find themselves without any other recourse to funds. But in an increasingly digital era, street papers face harder questions than instituting paywalls to ensure their own financial sustainability. At day two of the #INSP2013 conference, where more than 100 representatives from 30 street papers around the world have gathered in Munich, the group focused on projects which are experimenting with translating the vendor mechanism online. In order to remain true to the street paper ethos of delivering 50% of the magazine cost to the vendor, as well as contributing effectively to the mission of ending homelessness, some creative digital thinking is needed. Here’s a breakdown of the ideas to date: Cashless street payments - Streetwise Chicago Recognising that we live increasingly in a cashless society, the street paper team in Chicago decided to create a system combining smartphone technology and Paypal virtual payments. Customers could buy Streetwise with a direct payment to the vendor via a unique identifying code. In part developed as a ‘courtesy’ for their vendors and customers, it has also inspired many of their vendors to get to grips with social media. streetwise.org/2013/02/buy-streetwise-with-your-smartphone/ Book yourself in for a night of homelessness - Faktum, Gothenburg In a spoof hostel booking site, ‘Faktum Hotels’ presented ten hot spots popular with the rough sleeper community as available rooms - for a mere 100 Swedish krona per night. Stunning photography matched with well integrated Facebook and Twitter links meant that the award winning awareness-raising campaign attracted global media interest and raised €18,000 for the Swedish street paper. en.faktumhotels.com/about Locate a Vendor - Megaphone, Vancouver Want to buy the magazine but not sure where your nearest vendor is? Tired of hearing reports that their readers could not find a magazine vendor, Megaphone developed a tool for people to track down their nearest seller. Using open source software and a comprehensive vendor database of average working hours, their innovative site halves the hassle of finding a magazine vendor, a win-win situation for everyone involved. It’s a mobile app so it also works on any phone. find.megaphonemagazine.com Digital subscriptions - Big Issue South Africa, Cape Town Our colleagues in South Africa trialled Google mapping software (similar to Megaphone’s project) with the location of their vendor pitches. However, internet access for both vendors and customers is still uneven across the region. At the last count, only two of their vendors were digitally active. The Big Issue South Africa team created a digital version of the magazine instead, to be purchased online as a subscription, and have subsequently attracted readers from far beyond Cape Town. berg-bach.com/releases/big-issue-app Keep an eye on the Big Issue website for more updates from the INSP's 2013 annual conference |

Contents [hide] 1 History 2 In popular culture 3 Chart performance 3.1 Sam Cooke version 3.2 Herman's Hermits version 3.3 Art Garfunkel version 3.4 Johnny Nash version 4 Personnel 4.1 Sam Cooke version 5 References 6 External links History[edit] The song was first attributed to the pseudonym "Barbara Campbell" who was Sam Cooke's high school sweetheart. It was first recorded by Cooke in 1959 for his 1960 album, The Wonderful World of Sam Cooke. The song was released as a single in the spring of 1960, reaching #12 in the US and #27 in the UK. A bouncy love song, the lyrics have the singer disavowing knowledge of academic subjects (the song is often referred to informally by its first line, "Don't know much about history"), but affirming the object of his affection "but I do know that I love you". Cooke had already left Keen for RCA when the song was 'discovered'. John Siamas of Keen had engineer Deano Lappas look through the Keen vaults for a good song, exactly as Art Rupe of Specialty had looked through the vaults and come up with 'I'll Come Running Back To You'. Bumps Blackwell and the regular session drummer were not present at the session. The drummer on this track, whose name is unknown, was likely around 15 or 16 years old and, as legend has it, recruited off of the street. Lou Rawls stood about a meter and a half away from Sam singing in the same microphone. Herman's Hermits had a major hit with an uptempo version of the song (omitting one verse) in the mid-1960s, which reached #4 in the U.S. and #7 in the UK. The Hermits' version was, according to singer Peter Noone and guitarist Keith Hopwood, done as a tribute to Cooke upon his death. Otis Redding recorded a version of the song on his 1965 album Otis Blue. In 1978, Art Garfunkel recorded the song as a ballad, with Paul Simon and James Taylor as backing vocalists. In 2004, the song was placed 373rd in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In popular culture[edit] The song is used in the classic 1978 film Animal House in the well-known lunchroom scene. The song was also included in the 1983 film Breathless. The original Sam Cooke version of the song comprised the title soundtrack of the 2005 film Hitch. After a Greg Chapman cover of the song was featured prominently in the 1985 film Witness in a scene where Harrison Ford dances with Kelly McGillis, "Wonderful World" gained further exposure, particularly in the United Kingdom, where a soundalike version of the song, produced by Karl Jenkins and with vocals sung by Barbadian Tony Jackson, a backing singer for Paul Young, appeared in "Bath", a well-remembered, Roger Lyons-directed 1985 advertisement for Levi's 501 jeans.[1][2] As a result, the Sam Cooke version of the song became a hit in the UK, reaching #2 in re-release. In a 2005 poll by the UK's Channel Four, the song was voted the 19th greatest song ever to feature in a commercial.[3] The author Kenneth C. Davis writes a series of books entitled Don't Know Much About, referencing this song. ================================================ WONDERFUL WORLD (DON'T KNOW MUCH) (Written by Sam Cooke / Herb Alpert / Lou Adler) Sam Cooke Art Garfunkel, James Taylor, & Paul Simon Herman's Hermits Don't know much about history, don't know much biology. Author: "One Tree Hill" is a song by rock band U2 Two paintings, The Nude Maja and The Clothed Maja, by Spanish painter Francisco Goya. [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 22:37:10 08/09/13 Fri Welcome to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. 4,301,328 articles in English Arts Biography Geography History Mathematics Science Society Technology All portals From today's featured article "One Tree Hill" is a song by rock band U2 and the ninth track on their 1987 album The Joshua Tree. It was written in memory of Greg Carroll, a Māori the band met in 1984 who later befriended lead singer Bono and served as a roadie for the group. Carroll was killed in July 1986 in a motorcycle accident in Dublin. Following the funeral in Carroll's native country of New Zealand, Bono wrote the lyrics to the song, which he dedicated to Carroll; the title comes from an Auckland hill (pictured) that Bono remembered from his 1984 visit to New Zealand. In March 1988, the song was released as the fourth single from The Joshua Tree in New Zealand and Australia, charting at number one on the New Zealand singles chart. The lyrics reflect Bono's thoughts at the funeral and pay homage to Chilean activist Victor Jara. The vocals were recorded in a single take, as Bono felt incapable of singing them a second time. U2 delayed performing the song on the Joshua Tree Tour in 1987 due to Bono's emotional state. After its live debut on the tour's third leg and an enthusiastic reaction from audiences, the song was played occasionally for the rest of the tour. (Full article...) Date Posted: 22:12:47 08/09/13 Fri UPDATE: Asian Shares Mostly Higher; Inflation Data Boosts China 09/08/2013 12:24PM -- Chinese stocks higher after inflation data. -- Nikkei worst performer of the week. -- Nikon plunges after negative earnings report. (Adds information, quotes, updates/adds market levels) By Daniel Inman Chinese stocks moved higher on Friday after inflation data raised expectations of stability in Asia's largest economy, while Japan bounced back from sharp losses over the last two sessions. China's consumer price index rose 2.7% on-year in July, slightly lower than the 2.8% increase forecast in a survey of 14 economists surveyed by Dow Jones and unchanged from June. The reading remained within the government's target of keeping yearly price increases to 3.5% or less On Thursday, trade data painted a positive picture of the state of China's economy, which showed better-than-expected global demand for the country's exports along with growing imports. The inflation data is another sign of potential stabilization in the region's largest economy. "Taken with Thursday's better-than-expected trade data, there's more reason to be positive on the economy," said Zheng Ping, analyst at Minsheng Securities. Chinese stocks were higher after the inflation data, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng index up 0.5% and the Shanghai Composite 0.7% higher in the mainland. The Australian dollar was also helped by the trade data, recently at US$0.9113. The so-called Aussie has been under pressure in recent sessions, hitting a three-year low of US$0.8848 earlier in the week. Also in Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 dropped 0.4% after the Reserve Bank of Australia lowered its expectations for economic growth, though it was vague on the outlook for interest rates. Japan's Nikkei added 0.5%, following its 5.5% decline over the last two sessions, after the U.S. dollar rose 0.4% against the yen overnight. The dollar was recently at Y96.60, compared with 96.72 late Thursday in New York. "The market is still looking somewhat precarious, as Thursday's selloff saw the Nikkei fall under its July low - a possible technical indicator of more weakness to come," said Kenichi Hirano, market advisor at Tachibana Securities. The yen's firmness in recent sessions made Japan the worst performing market in Asia for the week, with the Nikkei down 5.5% week-to-date. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 also lost ground this week, down 2.0% and 1.4% respectively since last Friday. The Shanghai Composite however, was up 1.3%. Earnings season continued in Tokyo, with camera maker Nikon Corp. plunging 12.2% after the firm said that its first quarter net profit dropped 72% on-year, resulting from weak demand for compact and interchangeable-lens model cameras. Another camera maker, Olympus Corp., lost 0.2% after reporting a net loss in the first quarter, with losses in its camera business narrowing. Date Posted: 02:47:33 08/09/13 Fri DST ends 2 days before Ramadan The Moroccan government has recently announced that the country will return to standard time at 3:00 a.m. (03:00) on Sunday, July 7, 2013 local time. Clocks will be turned back one hour. DST will resume again at 2:00 a.m. (02:00) on Saturday, August 10, 2013, when one hour will be added again to the local time. The end and resumption of DST was originally planned to coincide with the beginning and end of Ramadan, which lasts from July 9 to August 8, 2013. Morocco's updated 2013 DST schedule in detail Like several other countries, Morocco switches back to standard time during the month of Ramadan. The interruption in the DST schedule is designed to shorten evenings, making it easier for Muslims to observe the Ramadan fast during hours of daylight. Time in Morocco Standard time in Morocco is Western European Time (WET), which is the same as UTC. When DST is in force, the country observes Western European Summer Time (WEST), which is one hour ahead of UTC |

He was a record producer, arranger, pianist and keyboardist, and occasional lyricist, composer as well as joining with Karen on harmony vocals. Carpenter and his uncle both married women named Mary.[3] He frequently played the piano while his sister, Karen, played baseball outside.[4] He and Karen also liked to listen to the children's records his father bought for him when he was young.[4] He was introduced to Perry Como and Ella Fitzgerald, among many others, and by age 12, he knew he wanted to be in the music industry. The Carpenter family moved from New Haven to Downey, California, in June 1963. They wanted Richard to further his music career, and the family was fed up with the cold New England winters.[5] At the time, Richard was 16 years old. Richard studied music at the California State University at Long Beach. There, he met Frank Pooler, a conductor and composer. Pooler wrote the lyrics to the Christmas classic "Merry Christmas Darling" in 1968. He also met good friend John Bettis, who co-wrote songs with Richard. The Richard Carpenter Trio and Spectrum[edit source | edit]Carpenter created the Richard Carpenter Trio in 1965 with sister Karen and friend Wes Jacobs. Richard played the piano; Karen played the drums, and Wes played the tuba and bass. In 1966, the Richard Carpenter Trio played "Iced Tea" and "The Girl from Ipanema" at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. They won the competition, and shortly after recorded three songs at RCA Studios: "Every Little Thing," "Strangers in the Night," and the Carpenter original, "Iced Tea." "Iced Tea" is the only recording that was officially released to the public. Around 1967, Richard and Karen joined four other student musicians from Long Beach State to form a sextet, Spectrum, consisting of: John Bettis Richard Carpenter Karen Carpenter Leslie Johnston Gary Sims Danny Woodhams Although Spectrum played frequently at LA-area nightclubs such as Whisky A Go-Go, they met with an unenthusiastic response - their broad harmonies and avoidance of rock 'n roll limited the band's commercial potential. Yet Spectrum was fruitful in another way, providing the raw material of future success: Bettis went on to become a lyricist for Richard's original compositions, and all the other members except Leslie Johnston went on to become members of the Carpenters. Career[edit source | edit]Richard and Karen finally signed with A&M Records on April 22, 1969. "Let's hope we have some hits," Herb Alpert told the two. According to Richard, Herb Alpert gave them carte blanche in the recording studios, but after Offering, their first album, was released, and wasn't a big seller, it was rumored that some of A&M's people were asking Alpert to release the Carpenters, but he believed in their talent, and insisted on giving them another chance. Alpert suggested that the Carpenters record a Burt Bacharach and Hal David song called "(They Long to Be) Close to You." Though Richard worked up an arrangement, only after Alpert's insistence, his arranging talents clearly shone in the finished product. His arranging and musical talents, as well as Karen's vocals, helped the song climb to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, staying there for a month. "(They Long to Be) Close to You" gained public recognition seemingly overnight. According to Richard, even though the song became popular overnight, the Carpenters themselves did not. Sitting at home one night, Richard was watching TV, and saw (and heard) a commercial for Crocker National Bank. He recognized the voices of Paul Williams and Roger Nichols, two A&M songwriters. It was the song "We've Only Just Begun." Richard made some calls to confirm their involvement, and asked if there was a full version of the song, which Williams affirmed. Carpenter managed to turn a bank commercial jingle into an RIAA certified Gold Record. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and has become a popular wedding song. The song also successfully launched the careers of Nichols and Williams, who went on to write multiple hits for the Carpenters, and many other artists. Richard composed many of the Carpenters' hits as well, with John Bettis as lyricist, such as: "Goodbye to Love" (one of the first pop ballads to have a fuzz guitar solo - #7--influenced the development of the power ballad [6]) "Top of the World" (#1. Though the Carpenters originally opted to not release this song as a single, a version recorded by Lynn Anderson reached #2 on the Billboard Country charts; following the success of Anderson's version, the Carpenters decided to release their version as a single, and it reached the Billboard top ten. "Yesterday Once More" (#2) "Only Yesterday" (#4) Quaalude addiction and treatment[edit source | edit]While Karen was suffering from the anorexia nervosa that would ultimately claim her life in 1983, Richard suffered from an addiction to quaaludes. They had been prescribed for him by his doctor as sleep aids, but his use got out of hand. He eventually sought treatment for his addiction at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas, checking into the clinic in 1979 for an eight-week treatment program, which proved successful. Post-Carpenters[edit source | edit] Carpenters' star at the Hollywood Walk of FameOn October 12, 1983, eight months after Karen's death, the Carpenter family celebrated the unveiling of the Carpenters' new star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Richard said in his speech, "This is a sad day, but at the same time a very special and beautiful day to my family and I. My only regret is that Karen is not physically here to share it with us, but I know that she is very much alive in our minds, and in our hearts."[4] He started recording a solo album on June 26, 1985, and finished the album on July 5, 1987.[7] The album was called Time. It featured Dusty Springfield and Dionne Warwick. Springfield sang "Something in Your Eyes", and Warwick sang "In Love Alone". Richard created a song dedicated to Karen called "When Time Was All We Had". It starts off as an a cappella, but then Richard's piano fades in, as well as Herb Alpert's flugelhorn. Lyrics included: Our hearts were filled with music and laughter, Your voice will be the sweetest sound I'll ever hear and yet, We knew somehow the song would never end, When time was all we had to spend. In 1996, at the suggestion of music writer Daniel Levitin, Carpenter recorded and released Richard Carpenter: Pianist, Arranger, Composer, Conductor, which included reworkings of many Carpenters favorites, including hits and album tracks, and ends with "Karen's Theme", which Carpenter composed for the 1989 made for TV movie, The Karen Carpenter Story. In 1984, Richard married his first cousin Mary Rudolph (daughter of his mother's sister Bernice). Contrary to popular belief, Mary and Richard are not biologically related, since Rudolph is adopted. Her brother, Mark Rudolph, was the Carpenters' road manager, as well as the radio call-in "contestant" in the [Oldies] "Medley" on the 1973 album, Now & Then. The couple had been dating since the late 1970s. A young Mary made a cameo appearance in the Carpenters' promotional video for the song "I Need to Be in Love". It should be noted that when Karen learned of the relationship, she was completely mortified and shared her feelings with her brother on a number of occasions, leading to a final argument where Richard told his sister "We have had the tests done, there will be no problem if we have children in the future. So let it drop!" Richard and Mary have five children: Kristi Lynn, Traci Tatum, Mindi Karen (named after his late sister), Colin Paul and Taylor Mary. The children and Richard sometimes perform music together at various Carpenter-related events. The family today resides in Thousand Oaks, California. He also funds an annual scholarship/talent show for people with artistic abilities that is held at the Thousand Oaks Civic Center. Recently, Richard helped in the productions of the documentaries Close to You: Remembering the Carpenters (1997) and Only Yesterday: The Carpenters Story (2007). He released the DVDs Gold: Greatest Hits and Interpretations. Carpenter is also mastering a new Christmas album. Author: At its meeting today, the Board decided to lower the cash rate by 25 basis points to 2.5 per cent, effective 7 August 2013. [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 21:08:06 08/06/13 Tue Media Release Number 2013-15 Date 6 August 2013 Embargo For Immediate Release Statement by Glenn Stevens, Governor: Monetary Policy Decision At its meeting today, the Board decided to lower the cash rate by 25 basis points to 2.5 per cent, effective 7 August 2013. Recent information is consistent with global growth running a bit below average this year, with reasonable prospects of a pick-up next year. Commodity prices have declined but, overall, remain at high levels by historical standards. Inflation has moderated over recent months in a number of countries. Globally, financial conditions remain very accommodative, though the recent reassessment by markets of the outlook for US monetary policy has seen a noticeable rise in sovereign bond yields, from exceptionally low levels. Volatility in financial markets has increased and has affected a number of emerging market economies in particular. In Australia, the economy has been growing a bit below trend over the past year. This is expected to continue in the near term as the economy adjusts to lower levels of mining investment. The unemployment rate has edged higher. Recent data confirm that inflation has been consistent with the medium-term target. With growth in labour costs moderating, this is expected to remain the case over the next one to two years, even with the effects of the recent depreciation of the exchange rate. The easing in monetary policy over the past 18 months has supported interest-sensitive spending and asset values, and further effects can be expected over time. The pace of borrowing has remained relatively subdued, though recently there are signs of increased demand for finance by households. The Australian dollar has depreciated by around 15 per cent since early April, although it remains at a high level. It is possible that the exchange rate will depreciate further over time, which would help to foster a rebalancing of growth in the economy. The Board has previously noted that the inflation outlook could provide some scope to ease policy further, should that be required to support demand. At today's meeting, and taking account of recent information on prices and activity, the Board judged that a further decline in the cash rate was appropriate. The Board will continue to assess the outlook and adjust policy as needed to foster sustainable growth in demand and inflation outcomes consistent with the inflation target over time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enquiries: Dr Christopher Kent Assistant Governor (Economic) Reserve Bank of Australia SYDNEY Phone: +61 2 9551 8800 Dr Guy Debelle Assistant Governor (Financial Markets) Reserve Bank of Australia SYDNEY Phone: +61 2 9551 8200 Media Office Information Department Reserve Bank of Australia SYDNEY Phone: +61 2 9551 9720 Fax: +61 2 9551 8033 E-mail: rbainfo@rba.gov.au |
