After the success obtained by Anna Jarvis with the promotion of Mother's Day in the US, some[who?] wanted to create similar holidays for other family members, and Father's Day was the choice most likely to succeed.[citation needed] There were other persons in the US who independently thought of "Father's Day",[1][2] but the credit for the modern holiday is often given to Sonora Dodd,[2] who was the driving force behind its establishment.[3] Father's Day was founded in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas.[3] Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910.[3][4] Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there.[3] After hearing a sermon about Jarvis' Mother's Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honoring them.[3] Although she initially suggested June 5, her father's birthday, the pastors did not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June.[1][2] It did not have much success initially. In the 1920s, Dodd stopped promoting the celebration because she was studying in the Art Institute of Chicago, and it faded into relative obscurity, even in Spokane.[5] In the 1930s Dodd returned to Spokane and started promoting the celebration again, raising awareness at a national level.[6] She had the help of those trade groups that would benefit most from the holiday, for example the manufacturers of ties, tobacco pipes, and any traditional present to fathers.[7] Since 1938 she had the help of the Father's Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men's Wear Retailers to consolidate and systematize the commercial promotion.[8] Americans resisted the holiday during a few decades, perceiving it as just an attempt by merchants to replicate the commercial success of Mother's Day, and newspapers frequently featured cynical and sarcastic attacks and jokes.[9] But the trade groups did not give up: they kept promoting it and even incorporated the jokes into their adverts, and they eventually succeeded.[10] By the mid-1980s the Father's Council wrote that "(...) [Father's Day] has become a Second Christmas for all the men's gift-oriented industries."[11] A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913.[12] In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father's Day celebration[13] and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized.[14] US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation.[13] Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress.[13][15] In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus "[singling] out just one of our two parents".[15] In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.[14] Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.[13][14][15][16] In addition to Father's Day, International Men's Day is celebrated in many countries on November 19 for men and boys who are not fathers. Similar celebrations[edit source | edit]A "Father's Day" service was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia, in the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church.[1] Grace Golden Clayton was mourning the loss of her father when, on December 1907, the Monongah Mining Disaster in nearby Monongah killed 361 men, 250 of them fathers, leaving around a thousand fatherless children. Clayton suggested her pastor Robert Thomas Webb to honor all those fathers.[17][18][19] Clayton chose the Sunday nearest to the birthday of her father, Methodist minister Fletcher Golden. Clayton's event did not have repercussions outside of Fairmont for several reasons, among them: the city was overwhelmed by other events, the celebration was never promoted outside of the town itself and no proclamation was made in the City Council. Also two events overshadowed this event: the celebration of Independence Day July 4, 1908, with 12,000 attendants and several shows including a hot air balloon event, which took over the headlines in the following days, and the death of a 16-year-old girl on July 4. The local church and Council were overwhelmed and they did not even think of promoting the event, and it was not celebrated again for many years. The original sermon was not reproduced in press and it was lost. Finally, Clayton was a quiet person, who never promoted the event or even talked to other persons about it.[17][18][19] Clayton also may have been inspired by Anna Jarvis' crusade to establish Mother's Day; two months prior, Jarvis had held a celebration for her dead mother in Grafton, West Virginia, a town about 15 miles (24 km) away from Fairmont.[citation needed] In 1911, Jane Addams proposed a city-wide Father's Day in Chicago, but she was turned down.[2] In 1912, there was a Father's Day celebration in Vancouver, Washington, suggested by Methodist pastor J. J. Berringer of the Irvingtom Methodist Church. They believed mistakenly that they had been the first to celebrate such a day.[1] They followed a 1911 suggestion by the Portland Oregonian.[2] Harry C. Meek, member of Lions Clubs International, claimed that he had first the idea for Father's Day in 1915.[1][2] Meek claimed that the third Sunday of June was chosen because it was his birthday (it would have been more natural to choose his father's birthday).[2] The Lions Club has named him "Originator of Father's Day".[1] Meek made many efforts to promote Father's Day and make it an official holiday.[1][2] Spelling[edit source | edit]In the United States, Dodd used the "Fathers' Day" spelling on her original petition for the holiday,[3] but the spelling "Father's Day" was already used in 1913 when a bill was introduced to the U.S. Congress as the first attempt to establish the holiday,[12] and it was still spelled the same way when its creator was commended in 2008 by the U.S. Congress.[20] Dates around the world[edit source | edit]The officially recognized date of Father's Day varies from country to country. Author: Argentina==August 24==Saturday 2013"Father of the Nation" José de San Martín [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 08:33:56 08/14/13 Wed International history and traditions [edit source | edit] In a few Catholic countries, it is celebrated on the Feast of St. Joseph.[citation needed] Argentina [edit source | edit] Father's Day in Argentina is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, but there have been several attempts to change the date to August 24, to commemorate the day on which the "Father of the Nation" José de San Martín became a father.[25] In 1953 the proposal to celebrate Father's Day in all educational establishments on August 24, in honor of José de San Martín, was raised to the General Direction of Schools of Mendoza Province. The day was celebrated for the first time in 1958, on the third Sunday of June, but it was not included in the school calendars due to pressure from several groups.[38] Schools in the Mendoza Province continued to celebrate Father's Day on August 24, and, in 1982, the Provincial Governor passed a law declaring Father's Day in the province to be celebrated on that day.[38] In 2004, several proposals to change the date to August 24 were presented to the Argentine Chamber of Deputies as a single, unified project.[38] After being approved, the project was passed to the Senate of Argentina for final review and approval. The Senate changed the proposed new date to the third Sunday of August, and scheduled the project for approval. However, the project was never addressed during the Senate's planned session, which caused its ultimate failure.[39] Aruba[edit source | edit] In Aruba, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June and is not a public holiday. Australia[edit source | edit] In Australia, Father's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September, which is the first Sunday of Spring, and is not a public holiday. YMCA Victoria continues the tradition of honouring the role fathers, and father figures play in parenting through the annual awarding of Local Community Father of the Year in 32 municipalities in Victoria. The Father's Day Council of Victoria annually recognise fathers in the Father of the Year Award.[40] Austria[edit source | edit] In Austria, Father's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of June and it is not a public holiday. Belgium[edit source | edit] In Belgium, Father's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of June and it is not a public holiday. Brazil[edit source | edit] In Brazil Father's Day (Dia dos Pais, in Portuguese) celebrated 3 months after Mother's Day, on the second Sunday of August. A publicist Sylvio Bhering in the mid-1950s selected the date in honor of Saint Joachim, patriarch of family (as well as the Catholic day of godfathers). It is not an official holiday (see Public holidays in Brazil), but it is widely observed and typically involves spending time with and giving gifts to one's father. Canada[edit source | edit] In Canada, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June and is not a public holiday. Father's Day typically involves spending time with one's father or the father figures in one's life. Small family gatherings and the giving of gifts may be part of the festivities organized for Father's Day. China[edit source | edit] In China, the official Father's Day is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June and is not a public holiday. This date was set according to international norms. Prior to the People's Republic; however, Father's Day was celebrated on August 8th when the Republic of China governed from Beijing. This is determined by the fact that the Eighth(ba) day of the Eighth(ba) month makes two "eight"s (八八, ba-ba), which sounds similar to the colloquial word for "daddy" (ba-ba,爸爸). Costa Rica[edit source | edit] In Costa Rica the Unidad Social Cristiana party presented a bill to change the celebration of the day from the third Sunday of June to March 19, the day of Saint Joseph.[41] That was in order to give tribute to this saint, who gave the name to the capital of the country San José, Costa Rica, and so family heads will be able to celebrate the Father's Day at the same time as the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker.[27] The official date is still third Sunday of June. Denmark[edit source | edit] In Denmark, Father's Day is celebrated on June 5.[24] It coincides with Constitution Day. Finland[edit source | edit] In Finland, Father's Day (Isänpäivä) is celebrated on the second Sunday of November. It's an established Flag day. Germany[edit source | edit] Hiking/drinking tour on Herrentag In Germany, Father's Day (Vatertag) is celebrated differently from other parts of the world.[42] It is always celebrated on Ascension Day (the Thursday forty days after Easter), which is a federal holiday. Regionally, it is also called men's day, Männertag, or gentlemen's day, Herrentag. It is tradition for groups of males (young and old but usually excluding pre-teenage boys) to do a hiking tour with one or more smaller wagons, Bollerwagen, pulled by manpower. In the wagons are wine or beer (according to region) and traditional regional food, Hausmannskost. Many men use this holiday as an opportunity to get drunk.[42] According to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, alcohol-related traffic accidents multiply by three on this day.[43] The tradition of getting drunk is especially prevalent in Eastern Germany.[42] These traditions are probably rooted in Christian Ascension Day's processions to the farmlands, which has been celebrated since the 18th century.[44][45] Men would be seated in a wooden cart and carried to the village's plaza, and the mayor would award a prize to the father who had the most children, usually a big piece of ham.[44] In the late 19th century the religious component was progressively lost, especially in urban areas such as Berlin, and groups of men organized walking excursions with beer and ham.[44] By the 20th century it had evolved into a holiday for getting drunk.[44] Most German fathers control their alcohol intake and simply take relaxed walks with friends, but the minority of people who get very drunk are very noisy and troublesome, and they give a bad name to the holiday.[44] Many modern fathers opt to spend the day with their families instead and refrain from getting drunk.[45] Many people will take the following Friday off at work, and some schools are closed on that Friday as well; many people then use the resulting four-day long weekend for a short vacation. Haiti[edit source | edit] In Haiti, Father's Day (Fęte des peres) is celebrated on the last Sunday of June and is not a public holiday. Fathers are recognized & celebrated on this day with cards, gifts, breakfast, lunch brunch or early Sunday dinner; whether enjoying the day at the beach or mountains, spending family time or doing activities that make Dad happiest, its all about Dad. Children exclaim "Bonne Fęte Papa!", while everyone wishes all fathers "Bonne fęte des Pčres" (Happy Father's Day) Hong Kong[edit source | edit] In Hong Kong, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June and is not a public holiday. Hungary[edit source | edit] In Hungary, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June and is not a public holiday. India[edit source | edit] Though Father's Day is not an Indian tradition, it is celebrated in India on the third Sunday of June and is not a public holiday. However, Pitru Amavasya is the day when Hindus honour their familial elders during Pitru Paksha (fortnight of the ancestors). It occurs in Bhadrapada masam (month) of the Hindu calendar. Ireland[edit source | edit] In Ireland, Father's Day (Irish: Lá an Athar) is celebrated on the third Sunday of June and is not a public holiday. Iran[edit source | edit] Father's day in Iran is celebrated on the 13th of Rajab, on the birth anniversary of Imam Ali, the first Imam of Shia Muslims; which looks more like a Muslim religious day than ancient Persia founded by real Persian ancestors. It is an occasion to complement mother's day and to celebrate fatherhood. Nepal[edit source | edit] Main article: Gokarna Aunsi The Newar population (natives of Kathmandu valley) in Nepal honors fathers on the day of Gokarna Aunsi, which occurs in late August or early September, depending on the year, since it depends on the lunar calendar. The Western-inspired celebration of Father's Day that was imported into the country is always celebrated on the same day as Gokarna Aunsi. The rest of the population has also begun to celebrate the Gokarna Aunsi day [46] It is commonly known as Abu ya Khwa Swoyegu in Nepal Bhasa or Buwaako mukh herne din (बुवाको मुख हेर्ने दिन) in Nepali (literally "day for looking at father’s face").[37][47] On the new moon day (Amavasya) it is traditional to pay respect to your deceased father; Hindus go to the Shiva temple of Gokarneswor Mahadev, in Gokarna, a suburb of Kathmandu[48] while Buddhists go to Jan Bahal (Seto Machhendranath or white Tara) temple in Kathmandu. Traditionally, in the Kathmandu Valley, the South-Western corner is reserved for women and women-related rituals, and the North-Eastern is for men and men-related rituals. The worship place for Mata Tirtha Aunsi ("Mother Pilgrimage New Moon") is located in Mata Tirtha in the South-Western half of the valley, while the worship place for Gokarna Aunsi is located in the North-Eastern half. This division is reflected in many aspects of the life in Kathmandu valley.[49] Netherlands[edit source | edit] In the Netherlands, Father's Day (Vaderdag) is celebrated on the third Sunday of June and is not a public holiday. Out of the 27 states in the European Union, it was the only one without an official Father's Day. Law 319/2009 made both Mother's Day and Father's Day official in Romania, and it was passed thanks to the campaigning from the Alliance Fighting Discrimination Against Fathers (TATA)[23] Romanian Father's day for 2012 was celebrated on May 13. In Mandarin Chinese, the pronunciation of both the number 8 and the month of August is bā. This pronunciation is very similar to the character "爸" "bŕ", which means "Pa" or "father". The Taiwanese, therefore, sometimes refer to August 8 as "Bābā Holiday" (爸爸節)or" (父親節). Thailand[edit source | edit] In Thailand, Father's Day is set as the birthday of the king.[36] December 5 is the birthday of the current king, Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX). Traditionally, Thais celebrate by giving their father or grandfather a Canna flower (ดอกพุทธรักษา Dok Buddha Ruksa), which is considered a masculine flower; however, this is not as commonly practiced today. Thai people will wear yellow on this day to show respect for the king, because yellow is the Color of the day for Monday, the day King Bhumibol Adulyadej was born. In 2007, King Bhumibol Adulyadej was seen leaving the hospital wearing a baby pink blazer. Today, Thais wear pink instead of the yellow. It first gained nationwide popularity in the 1980s as part of a campaign by Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanonda to promote Thailand's royal family.[36] Mother's Day is celebrated on the birthday of Queen Sirikit,[36] August 12. The best-selling single of his solo career, its lyrics encourage the listener to imagine a world at peace, without the divisiveness and barriers of borders, religions and nationalities, and to consider the possibility that the focus of humanity should be living a life unattached to material possessions. Lennon and Yoko Ono co-produced the song and album of the same name with Phil Spector. Recording began at Lennon's home studio at Tittenhurst Park, England, in May 1971, with final overdubs taking place at the Record Plant, in New York City, during July. One month after the September release of the LP, Lennon released "Imagine" as a single in the United States; the song peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and the LP reached number one on the UK chart in November, later becoming the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed album of Lennon's solo career. Although not originally released as a single in the United Kingdom, it was released in 1975 to promote a compilation LP and it reached number six in the chart that year. The song has since sold more than 1.6 million copies in the UK; it reached number one following Lennon's death in December 1980. BMI named "Imagine" one of the 100 most-performed songs of the 20th century. The song ranked number 30 on the Recording Industry Association of America's list of the 365 Songs of the Century bearing the most historical significance. It earned a Grammy Hall of Fame Award and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. A UK survey conducted by the Guinness World Records British Hit Singles Book named it the second best single of all time, and Rolling Stone ranked it number 3 in their list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Since 2005, event organisers have played it just before the New Year's Times Square Ball drops in New York City. Dozens of artists have performed or recorded versions of "Imagine", including Madonna, Stevie Wonder, Joan Baez, Elton John, and Diana Ross. Emeli Sandé recorded a cover for the BBC to use during the end credits montage at the close of the 2012 Summer Olympics coverage in August 2012. "Imagine" subsequently re-entered the UK Top 40, reaching number 18. John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (born John Winston Lennon; 9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English musician, singer and songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as a founder member of the Beatles, the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed band in the history of popular music. With Paul McCartney, he formed a songwriting partnership that is the most celebrated of the 20th century. Mark David Chapman (born May 10, 1955) is an American prison inmate who was convicted for murdering John Lennon on December 8, 1980. Chapman shot Lennon outside The Dakota apartment building in New York City. Chapman fired at Lennon five times, hitting him four times in his back. Chapman later remained at the scene reading J. D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye until the police arrived and arrested him. Chapman repeatedly said that the novel was his statement. Chapman's legal team put forward an insanity defense based on expert testimony that he was in a delusional and possibly psychotic state at the time, but nearing the trial, Chapman told his lawyer that he wanted to plead guilty based on what he had decided was the will of God. Judge Edwards allowed the plea change without further psychiatric assessment, and sentenced Chapman to a prison term of 20 years to life with a stipulation that mental health treatment be provided. Chapman was imprisoned in 1981 and has been denied parole seven times amidst campaigns against his release.[1][2][3] |

Date Posted: 08:06:23 08/14/13 Wed Barack Obama Inaugural Address Tuesday, January 20, 2009 The Democrats take back the White House in the 2008 election. Barack Hussein Obama a senator from Illinois defeated John Sidney McCain III a senator from Arizona. The oath of office was taken on the Bible used by President Abraham Lincoln, it was administered by Chief Justice John G. Roberts. An estimated 1.8 million people packed the National Mall and surrounding areas for the inauguration ceremony. My fellow Americans, I stand before you today, humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices born by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation [applause pause], as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition. 44 Americans have now taken the presidential oath. Words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity, and the still waters of peace. Yet every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds, and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on, not simply because of the vision or skill of those in high office, but because we, the people, have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears, and true to our founding documents. So it has been, so it must be with THIS generation of Americans. That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war with a far reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices, and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost, jobs shed, businesses shuttered, our health care is too costly, our schools fail too many, and each day brings brings new evidence that the way we use energy strengthens our adversaries and threatens our planet. These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable, but no less profound is the sapping of confidence across our land, a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, that the next generation must lower its sights. Tired of reading? Add this page to your Bookmarks or Favorites and finish it later. Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time, but know this America, THEY WILL BE MET! [applause pause] On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations, and worn out dogmas that for far too long have strangles our politics. We remain a young nation, but in the words of scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit, to choose our better history, to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation, the God given promise that ALL are equal, ALL are free, and ALL deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness. [longer pause for applause] In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint hearted, for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame, rather it has been the risk takers, the doers, the makers of things, some celebrated, but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long rugged path towards prosperity and freedom. Page 1 of 5 =============== For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and travelled across oceans in search of a new life. For us, they toiled in sweatshops, and settled the West, endured the lash of the whip, and plowed the hard earth. For us, they fought, and died, in places like Concord, and Gettysburg, Normandy, and Khe Sahn. Time and again, these men and women struggled and sacrificed until their hands were raw, so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions, greater than all the differences of birth, or wealth, or faction. THIS is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive. Our goods and services no less needed than they were last week, or last month, or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished, but our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions. . .that time has surely passed. Starting TODAY, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America. . . [long applause pause] . . .for everywhere we look there is work to be done. The state of our economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act, not only to create new jobs, but to lay new foundations for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We have hundreds more books for your enjoyment. Read them all! We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories, and we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. All this we WILL do. Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions, who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short, for they have forgotten what this country has already done, what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage. What the cynics fail to understand, is that the ground has shifted beneath them, that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask to day is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works, whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is YES, we intend to move forward, where the answer is NO, programs will end, and those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account, to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day, because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government. Page 2 of 5 ================= Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control, the nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended, not just on the size of our gross domestic product, but on the reach of our prosperity, on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart, not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good. [long applause pause] As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our founding fathers [pause for applause]. . . . Our founding fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedients' sake. . . [applause pause] . . .and so, to all the other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitols, to the small village where my father was born, know that America is a friend of each nation, and every man, woman, and child, who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and we are ready to lead once more. [long pause for applause] Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism, not just with missiles and tanks, but with the sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. Tired of reading? Add this page to your Bookmarks or Favorites and finish it later. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use, our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint. We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort, even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to is people, and forge a hard earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now, that our spirit is stronger, and cannot be broken. You cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you! [long pause for applause] For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth, and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger, and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass, that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve, that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself, and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace. Page 3 of 5 ================== To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their societies' ills on the West, know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. [pause for applause] To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit, and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist. [pause for applause] To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow, to nourish starved bodies, and feed hungry minds, and to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to the suffering outside our borders, nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we much change with it. As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them, not only because they are the guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service, a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment, a moment that will define a generation, it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us ALL. Tired of reading? Add this page to your Bookmarks or Favorites and finish it later. For as a government can do, and must do, it us ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job, which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighters' courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate. Our challenges may be new, the instruments with which we meet them may be new, but those values upon which our success depends, honesty, and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism, these things are old, these things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then, is a return to these truths. What is required of us now, is a new era of responsibility, a recognition on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept, but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task. This is the price and the promise of citizenship. This is the source of our confidence, the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny. Page 4 of 5 ===================== This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed, why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father, less than 60 years ago, might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath. [long pause for applause] So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are, and how far we have traveled. In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capitol was abandoned, the enemy was advancing, the snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people: "Let it be told to the future world, that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive, that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet it." America, in the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children, that when we were tested, we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back, nor did we falter, and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations. Thank you, God bless you, and God bless the United States of America. We have hundreds more books for your enjoyment. Read them all! Page 5 of 5 |

Neil Percival Young (born November 12, ...==a Saturday 2011 last day Monique "Tell Me Why" Song by Neil Young from the album After the Gold Rush Released August 31, 1970 Recorded Spring 1970, Young's home studio in Topanga, California Genre Rock Length 2:54 Label Reprise Writer Neil Young Producer David Briggs, Neil Young After the Gold Rush track listing "Tell Me Why" (1) "After the Gold Rush" (2) Composition and Lyrics[edit source | edit] Musically, the song marks a shift from the hard rock of 1969's Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and bears more folk and country influences, which would continue onto 1972's Harvest. The only instrument is acoustic guitar, played by Young. He is, however, backed by the vocal harmonies of Crazy Horse during the choruses.[2] 'Tell Me Why' has a simple lyrical structure, with 2 verses each followed by a bridge then chorus, and one final bridge and chorus before a short instrumental outro. The chorus line "Tell me why, tell me why/Is it hard to make arrangements with yourself/When you're old enough to repay/but young enough to sell?" is the most famous from the song, typifying the introspective and melancholic nature of not just this song, but the whole album. Cover Versions[edit source | edit] Norah Jones has been known to cover 'Tell Me Why' as well as Radiohead,[3] most notably at the White River Amphitheatre and the Hollywood Bowl in 2008. The song is famously popular with Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea.[4] References[edit source | edit] |

Originally, the track "If It Wasn't for the Nights" was going to be the album's lead single, but after "Chiquitita" was completed those plans were abandoned, and it would remain an album track. It had working titles of "Kĺlsupare", "3 Wise Guys", "Chiquitita Angelina" and "In The Arms of Rosalita". A revised version, which had a sound that was influenced by the Peruvian song "El Condor Pasa (If I Could)" performed by Simon and Garfunkel, was recorded in December 1978 and released as a single in January 1979.[citation needed] With the success of the English version, ABBA also recorded "Chiquitita" in Spanish by phonetics, and it was one of the featured tracks on the Spanish-language release Gracias Por La Música . Reception[edit source | edit] "Chiquitita" proved to be one of ABBA's biggest hits. It was featured in a 1979 UNICEF charity event, the Music for UNICEF Concert, broadcast worldwide from the United Nations General Assembly. As a direct result of this event, ABBA donated half of all royalties from the song to UNICEF. "Chiquitita" hit #1 in Belgium, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, Colombia, Mexico, South Africa and Rhodesia, and was a Top 5 hit in ABBA's native Sweden, the United Kingdom (peaking at #2 in both countries where Blondie's "Heart of Glass" was occupying the top spot),[1] Australia, West Germany and Norway, making it the most successful single from the Voulez-Vous album in terms of global charts and one of the most famous charity songs ever. To this day, 50% of the proceeds from the song go to UNICEF in recognition of the "International Year of the Child" in 1979. In May 2007, "Chiquitita" had gained UNICEF over 15,000,000 SEK (about $2,500,000).[citation needed] In Great Britain, "Chiquitita" debuted at #8 in the singles chart, making it the highest place début for any ABBA single release.[2] Music video[edit source | edit] "Chiquitita" was one of the very few singles ABBA released without a custom-made video. Since then, on compilations of the group's videos, a contemporary TV performance of the song has been used. This clip was taped by the BBC for the show Abba in Switzerland, broadcast across Europe at Easter 1979. ABBA is seen performing the song on a mountainside, with a snowman in the background. Throughout the clip, there was an obvious problem with the fan during filming, which affected Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad; her hair constantly flew in her face, and she was forced to keep moving it out of her eyes.[3] Chart positions[edit source | edit] Single by ABBA from the album Voulez-Vous B-side "Lovelight" Released 16 January 1979 (Sweden) 26 January 1979 (UK) 10 November 1979 (US) Format 7-inch single Recorded 13 December 1978 at Polar Music Studio Genre Pop, Europop Length 5:26 Label Polar (Sweden) Epic (UK) Atlantic (US) Writer(s) Benny Andersson Björn Ulvaeus Producer Benny Andersson Björn Ulvaeus Certification Gold (UK), Gold (Netherlands), Gold (NZ) ABBA singles chronology "Summer Night City" (1978) "Chiquitita" (1979) "Does Your Mother Know" (1979) Music video "Chiquitita (For BBC, 1979)" on YouTube Music sample "Chiquitita" |

Released as single Scepter 1236 (B-side "And I Never Knew") in May 1962, "I Just Don't Know..." reached the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart in Billboard with a #119 peak. The track served as the title track for Hunt's sole album release on Scepter released in April 1963. The success in the UK of the Dusty Springfield version of "I Just Don't Know..." in the summer of 1964 led to Scepter's re-releasing the original at that time. Dusty Springfield[edit source | edit] Dusty Springfield recorded "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" in a session at Olympic Studios in Westminster with production credited to Philips Records owner Johnny Franz - although Springfield later stated her solo Philips tracks were self-produced - and arranged by Ivor Raymonde who conducted his orchestra; personnel on the session included Big Jim Sullivan on guitar and Bobby Graham on drums. Springfield, whose first solo recordings had included covers of the Bacharach/David compositions "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and "Wishin' and Hopin'" - had brought back "I Just Don't Know..." from an overnight trip to New York City where she met up with Bacharach in February 1964. The third UK single release of Springfield's solo career - following the "Brill Building" Sound-alikes "I Only Want to Be With You" and "Stay Awhile" - "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" was Springfield's first UK single release to display her signature vocal style; rising to #3 in the summer of 1964 the track remained Springfield's highest charting UK hit until she reached #1 in 1966 with "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" which would remain Springfield's only UK solo hit to chart higher than "I Just Don't Know...". A concurrent US release of Springfield's "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" was preempted by the presence of Springfield's "Wishin' and Hopin'" in the US Top Ten over the summer of 1964. Springfield's "I Just Don't Know..." received a belated US release in October 1965 featured on a single with Springfield's current UK hit "Some of Your Lovin'"; that month Springfield made a promotional junket to the US which included performances of both of the single's tracks on the TV shows Hullabaloo and Shindig but neither side reached the Billboard Hot 100. Dionne Warwick[edit source | edit] Dionne Warwick recorded "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" at Bell Sound Studios in August 1966 with Burt Bacharach producing; released that September the track was a moderate success reaching #26 on the Hot 100 (#20 R&B) with its strongest evident regional success in Detroit going Top Ten there. After "Message to Michael" and "Trains and Boats and Planes" Warwick's "I Just Don't Know..." was her third consecutive single release comprising a previously recorded Bacharach/David song and Warwick's next Top 40 single "Alfie" would also fit in this category; all four of these tracks were featured on Warwick's Here Where There Is Love album release of 1967. Marcia Hines reached #6 on the Australian Pop chart in 1976 with her recording of "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" produced by Robie Porter. "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" has also been recorded by Cissy Houston (1968), Isaac Hayes (1970), the Dells (1972), Elvis Costello & The Attractions (1978), Demis Roussos (1978), The Photos (featuring Wendy Wu) (1980), Linda Ronstadt (1994), the Stylistics (1991) and Steve Tyrell (2003). Trijntje Oosterhuis and Tina Arena both released versions in 2007. A French version of the song by Michčle Vendôme and Claude Carrčre, "Oui, il faut croire", was released by yéyé-singer Sheila in 1964. An Italian translation by Franco Migliacci, "Se mi vuoi bene", has been recorded by Patty Pravo in 1968. Although the recording year is unknown, a 2002 release of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' Away We a Go-Go includes their version of "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself". Also in 1997, the soundtrack to My Best Friend's Wedding included a version by Nicky Holland. In the film, Cameron Diaz sings the song in a karaoke scene. In 2003, "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" was released as a single by the American alternative rock band The White Stripes. It was the second single from their album Elephant. The video for the White Stripes version is a black-and-white video featuring Kate Moss pole dancing and was directed by Sofia Coppola. In 2006, "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" was performed and included in the soundtrack for Shout! The Mod Musical. In 2011, Ronan Keating recorded the song for his album "When Ronan Met Burt". In 2012, Melanie C recorded the song for her musical theatre-inspired album "Stages (Melanie C album)". Written and produced by Smokey Robinson of The Miracles, the song is a woman's dedication to the goodness of her man ("There's not a man today who could take me away from my guy"). The single became the biggest hit ever for Wells, Motown's first female star, and reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart.[1] The song led the Cashbox magazine R&B chart for seven weeks.[2] "My Guy" also happened to be Wells' last hit single for Motown, excepting duets she recorded with label mate Marvin Gaye. An option in her recording contract allowed Wells to terminate the contract at her discretion after she reached her twenty-first birthday on May 13, 1964. Encouraged by her ex-husband, Wells broke her Motown contract and signed with 20th Century Fox in hopes of higher royalties and possible movie roles. However, Wells' career never again reached the heights it had at Motown, and she never again had a hit single as big as "My Guy". In the United Kingdom, "My Guy" peaked at number five in June 1964. As one of Motown's signature hits, "My Guy" has been covered often, with versions by The Supremes, Sister Sledge, Petula Clark, Claudine Longet, Aretha Franklin, Margo Smith, and more having been recorded over the years. The cover version of the song with the biggest chart impact in the United States was by Sister Sledge in 1982 (#23). One notable cover, used in the Whoopi Goldberg film Sister Act, substitutes "My Guy" with "My God", transforming the song into a faux-gospel number. In 1980, Amii Stewart and Johnny Bristol recorded it as a duet in a medley with another Motown classic, the Temptations' "My Girl"; it reached only #63 in the U.S. Wells herself re-recorded the song in a funk rendition for her 1984 album, I'm a Lady. In 1999, "My Guy" was inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2008, the Los Angeles-based rock group Warpaint performed a version of the song on their EP Exquisite Corpse (EP) under the title "Billie Holliday". The album is a tribute to the American popular music of Joel's teenage years with Joel paying homage to a number of different popular American musical styles from the late 1950s and early 1960s, most notably doo-wop and soul music (see each track listed below for specific homages).[3] The album cover artwork was taken on the front steps of 142 Mercer Street, just north of the intersection of Mercer and Prince Street in the SoHo neighborhood in New York City.[citation needed] Contents [hide] 1 Chart performance 2 Awards 3 Background 4 Track listing 4.1 LP track listing 5 Personnel 6 Production 7 Accolades 7.1 Grammy Awards 7.2 American Music Awards 8 Charts 8.1 Peak positions 8.2 Certifications and sales 8.3 Year-end charts 8.4 Decade-end charts 9 References Chart performance[edit source | edit]The album featured three Billboard Top 10 hit singles: "Tell Her About It", which reached #1, "Uptown Girl", which peaked at #3 and "An Innocent Man", which peaked at #10. Four other singles were released from the album: "The Longest Time" (number 14), "Leave a Tender Moment Alone" (number 27), "Keeping the Faith" (number 18) and "This Night" (US B-Side of "Leave a Tender Moment Alone"). "Tell Her About It" and "Uptown Girl" garnered international success — "Uptown Girl" reached #1 in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. An Innocent Man entered the U.S. Pop chart for 111 weeks, becoming Joel's longest charting studio album behind The Stranger. For over a year, the album remained on the charts in the UK, Japan, and Australia. Awards[edit source | edit]Like his three previous efforts, Joel's An Innocent Man received a nomination for the 26th Grammy Award for Album of the Year although Joel lost the award to Michael Jackson's Thriller. Joel was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Uptown Girl" but Jackson won in that category as well. Background[edit source | edit]In an interview about the making of the album, Joel talks about the fact that at the time that he was recording An Innocent Man, he was newly divorced from his first wife, Elizabeth Weber, and was single for the first time since achieving rock star status. So he had the opportunity to date supermodels like Elle Macpherson and Christie Brinkley, and because of these experiences, he said, "I kind of felt like a teenager all over again." [3] And so he started writing songs in the same style as pop songs that he remembered from his teenage years, citing pop music from the late 1950s and early 1960s, including "early R&B songs and The Four Seasons, and the Motown music, soul music." Joel explained, "When you're gonna write [songs for a new album], you write what you're feeling. And I didn't fight it. The material was coming so easily and so quickly, and I was having so much fun doing it. I was kind of reliving my youth. . .I think within 6 weeks I had written most of the material on the album." Joel also said that he was pleasantly surprised to have hit records in the 1980s with retro songs like the mostly a cappella doo wop song "The Longest Time."[3] Track listing[edit source | edit]All songs by Billy Joel, except for the chorus for "This Night," which is credited on the sleeve to L. V. Beethoven. The track listing on the LP is slightly different from that on the cassette and original CD pressings, with the latter swapping "The Longest Time" and "Uptown Girl"'s places respectively. However, on the actual cassette shell and disc label, the songs are listed (and play) in the correct order as printed on the LP. LP track listing[edit source | edit]Side One No. Title Length 1. Date Posted: 00:16:27 08/14/13 Wed Royal National Agricultural Show Day Queensland in Australia Quick Facts The Royal National Agricultural (RNA) Show Day is usually held in Brisbane, the capital city of the state of Queensland, Australia, on second Wednesday in August. If there are five Wednesdays in August, it is held on third Wednesday. Name Royal National Agricultural Show Day Queensland Royal National Agricultural Show Day Queensland 2013 Wednesday, August 14, 2013 Royal National Agricultural Show Day Queensland 2014 Wednesday, August 13, 2014 List of dates for other years The Royal National Agricultural (RNA) Show Day is held in Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, in Australia. It is usually on the second Wednesday of August except when there are five Wednesdays in August, when it is held on third Wednesday. The holiday mainly affects people living in the Brisbane area, although other regions throughout the state have a similar holiday to the Ekka holiday for their local shows. This holiday is also known as the Royal Queensland Show holiday, the Exhibition holiday or the Ekka holiday. Dagwood dogs, which are similar to corn dogs, are a popular treat during the Ekka holiday. ©iStockphoto.com/William Berry What do people do? Some people choose to spend the day relaxing at home, catching up with friends and family, or going to the movies. However many people throughout the state of Queensland, Australia, flock to the state’s capital city of Brisbane on this holiday to participate in the RNA show. Although only one day is allocated as a public holiday for the show, the event spans for more than a week, attracting more than 600,000 visitors, including tourists and people from other towns and cities in Australia and worldwide. Many people travelling from rural or regional areas of Queensland take a day off work or take their annual holiday leave for this occasion. The RNA show, commonly known as the Ekka, features firework displays, a large sideshow alley with various games and amusement park rides, fashion parades, prize-winning animals, craft and food. Other attractions include the show bag pavilion, where many show bags are sold featuring candy, toys, gadgets, food, and magazines. Another highlight of the event is the grand parade. Many towns, cities and shires throughout the rest of Queensland are allocated a holiday similar to the Ekka holiday to host their own local shows, which mirror the Ekka at a smaller scale, at different times of the year. The culmination of these shows is that many of the local show winners in various competitions compete at a state level at the Ekka. Statewide competitions at the Ekka include those for cattle breeds, show dogs, horses, sheep, and sheep dogs. The winners of their regional or local shows usually travel to Brisbane to compete in the Ekka show. Public life The RNA Show Day is a public holiday in the Brisbane area only. However, many regions in south-east Queensland have a day off for their local shows in the same week to coincide with the RNA Show Day. Schools are closed as are many businesses. Many businesses as well as state and local government employees in the Brisbane region have a day off. Extra public transport services, which include bus and train services, are offered to those travelling to and from the show on the day. Taxis may be busy, particularly in the evening when people travel home from the Ekka. Background The history of the show day started when a group of colonists met in Brisbane to form an agricultural and industrial association in 1875. The association aimed to promote and encourage Queensland’s agricultural and industrial development, as well as giving country and urban residents a chance to celebrate Queensland lifestyle. An inter-colonial exhibition was held from August 22-26, 1876, and proved to be a big success. A public holiday was declared and about 17,000 people attended the show on the opening day. At the time, Brisbane’s population was only about 22,000 people. The first “Royal” Show was held in 1921 and later on, the name of the show was shortened to “Ekka” indicating people’s affection for the show. The Ekka has been held annually, with only two exceptions: when Brisbane suffered a Spanish influenza epidemic in 1919; and during World War II in 1942 when the show grounds were used as a staging depot for troops. Over the years, other regions in Queensland adopted their own annual show holidays, especially in south-east Queensland where the show holidays have been held in the same week as the Ekka holiday. Symbols Images associated with the Ekka show holiday feature: show bags filled with candy, especially the Bertie Beetle show bag, which has been an all-time favorite over the decades; firework displays; Dagwood dogs, a type of food similar to corn dogs; the sideshow alley; and the Ferris wheel. |

Date Posted: 00:12:33 08/14/13 Wed Welcome to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. 4,304,132 articles in English Arts Biography Geography History Mathematics Science Society Technology All portals From today's featured article Barton Fink is a 1991 American film, written, directed, and produced by the Coen brothers (pictured). Set in 1941, it stars John Turturro in the title role as a young New York City playwright who is hired to write scripts for a movie studio in Hollywood, and John Goodman as Charlie, the insurance salesman who lives next door at the run-down Hotel Earle. The Coens wrote the screenplay in three weeks while experiencing difficulty during the writing of another film, Miller's Crossing. Premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1991, Barton Fink won the Palme d'Or, as well as awards for Best Director and Best Actor (Turturro). Although it was celebrated almost universally by critics and nominated for three Academy Awards, the movie grossed only $6,000,000 at the box office, two-thirds of its estimated budget. The process of writing and the culture of entertainment production are two prominent themes of Barton Fink. The worlds of Hollywood and Broadway are contrasted, and the film analyzes superficial distinctions between high and low culture. Barton Fink has defied efforts at genre classification. It has been variously referred to as a film noir, a horror film, a Künstlerroman, and a buddy film. (Full article...) This is an important festival, especially for young girls.[2] The festival originated from the romantic legend of two lovers, Zhin¨ą and Niulang,[1][6] who were the weaver maid and the cowherd. The tale of The Weaver Girl and the Cowherd has been celebrated in the Qixi Festival since the Han Dynasty.[7] The earliest-known reference to this famous myth dates back to over 2600 years ago, which was told in a poem from the Classic of Poetry.[8] The festival inspired Tanabata in Japan and Chilseok in Korea. Contents [hide] 1 Mythology 2 Traditions 3 In popular culture 4 See also 5 References 6 Bibliography Mythology[edit source | edit] Niulang and Zhin¨ąSee also: The Weaver Girl and the Cowherd The general tale is about a love story between Zhinu (the weaver girl, symbolizing Vega) and Niulang (the cowherd, symbolizing Altair).[1] Their love was not allowed, thus they were banished to opposite sides of the Silver River (symbolizing the Milky Way).[1][9] Once a year, on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, a flock of magpies would form a bridge to reunite the lovers for one day.[1] There are many variations of the story.[1] A variation follows: A young cowherd, hence Niulang (Chinese: ĹŁŔÉ; literally "cowherd"), came across a beautiful girl--Zhin¨ą (simplified Chinese: ÖŻĹ®; traditional Chinese: ż—Ĺ®; literally "weavergirl"), the seventh daughter of the Goddess, who had just escaped from boring heaven to look for fun. Zhin¨ą soon fell in love with Niulang, and they got married without the knowledge of the Goddess. Zhin¨ą proved to be a wonderful wife, and Niulang to be a good husband. They lived happily and had two children. But the Goddess of Heaven (or in some versions, Zhin¨ą's mother) found out that Zhin¨ą, a fairy girl, had married a mere mortal. The Goddess was furious and ordered Zhin¨ą to return to heaven. (Alternatively, the Goddess forced the fairy back to her former duty of weaving colorful clouds, a task she neglected while living on earth with a mortal.) On Earth, Niulang was very upset that his wife had disappeared. Suddenly, his ox began to talk, telling him that if he killed it and put on its hide, he would be able to go up to Heaven to find his wife. Crying bitterly, he killed the ox, put on the skin, and carried his two beloved children off to Heaven to find Zhin¨ą. The Goddess discovered this and was very angry. Taking out her hairpin, the Goddess scratched a wide river in the sky to separate the two lovers forever, thus forming the Milky Way between Altair and Vega. Zhin¨ą must sit forever on one side of the river, sadly weaving on her loom, while Niulang watches her from afar while taking care of their two children (his flanking stars ¦Â and ¦Ă Aquilae or by their Chinese names H¨¨ Gu 1 and H¨¨ Gu 3). But once a year all the magpies in the world would take pity on them and fly up into heaven to form a bridge (ȵÇĹ, "the bridge of magpies", Que Qiao) over the star Deneb in the Cygnus constellation so the lovers may be together for a single night, which is the seventh night of the seventh moon. Traditions[edit source | edit]Young girls partake in worshiping the celestials (°ÝĎÉ) during rituals.[2] They go to the local temple to pray to Zhin¨ą for wisdom.[3] Paper items are usually burned as offerings.[10] Girls may also recite traditional prayers for dexterity in needlework,[3][11] which symbolize the traditional talents of a good spouse.[3] Divination could take place to determine possible dexterity in needlework.[10] They make wishes for marrying someone who would be a good and loving husband.[1] During the festival, girls make a display of their domestic skills.[1] Traditionally, there would be contests amongst young girls who attempted to be the best in threading needles under low-light conditions like the glow of ember or a half moon.[10] Today, girls sometimes gather toiletries in honor of the seven maidens.[10] The festival also held an importance for newly-wed couples.[2] Traditionally, they would worship the celestial couple for the last time and bid farewell to them (ŢoĎÉ).[2] The celebration stood symbol for a happy marriage and showed that the married woman was treasured by her new family.[2] During this festival, a festoon is placed in the yard. Single and newly-wed women make offerings to Niulang and Zhin¨ą, which may include fruit, flowers, tea, and face powder. After finishing the offerings, half of the face powder is thrown on the roof and the other half divided among the young women. It is believed that by doing this, the women are bound in beauty with Zhin¨ą. Tales say that it will rain on this fateful day if there's crying in heaven. Other tales say that you can hear the lovers talking if you stand under grapevines on this night. On this day, the Chinese gaze to the sky to look for Vega and Altair shining in the Milky Way, while a third star forms a symbolic bridge between the two stars.[7] It was said that if it rains on this day that it was caused by a river sweeping away the magpie bridge, or that the rain is the tears of the separated couple.[12] Based on the legend of a flock of magpies forming a bridge to reunite the couple, a pair of magpies came to symbolize conjugal happiness and faithfulness.[13] In popular culture[edit source | edit]Barry Hughart's fantasy novel, Bridge of Birds, is loosely based upon this story, though the two figures are switched. The girl is forced to remain on earth, while her male paramour is in the heavens. She is a peasant girl, and he shepherds the stars. In the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid, the protagonist attends this festival with his female companion and sees the story reenacted in a shadow play. American post-hardcore band La Dispute's song "Four" is written about an alternative version of this story, with a Great King taking the role of separating the lovers, due to her neglecting her duties at the loom. In this version the lovers are a princess and a shepherd, and it replaces all the mythology in the original story. La Dispute's first LP has a recurring theme of this story, including the album title: Somewhere At the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair. In Kamen Rider Den-O, the series' second rider, Kamen Rider Zeronos, was based heavily on this legend. His Altair form had the motif of a bull (linking to Altair's occupation as a cowherd), his Vega form uses a spool of thread for the visor (linking to Vega's occupation as a weaver). The sole link between the forms is an imagin called Deneb, linking to the bridge that can reunite the lovers. An interactive Google Doodle was launched on Qixi Festival 2013 to mark the occasion. Positive sentiment across Asia also helped while Treasury’s release of its Pre-Election Economic and Fiscal Outlook (PEFO) failed to inspire investors when it was released on market open. CBA shares rose by one per cent today while biopharmaceutical company CSL rose four per cent. Both companies release their FY13 results to the ASX tomorrow. On the reporting calendar today, property developer Stockland Group (SGP) fell almost three per cent to $3.70 after blaming a write-down and weakness in the residential housing market for its drop in FY profit. FY13 NPAT fell almost 80 per cent to $104.6M. Shareholders will receive a final fully franked dividend of 12 cents per share. A better day for mining products supplier Bradken (BKN), which saw its share price rise 12.4 per cent to $5.89 on a bullish FY14 outlook. BKN reported a 33.4 per cent drop in FY13 profit to $66.9M but will continue to cut costs in the current financial year to get back on track. In economic data today, the NAB business confidence index weakened from minus 0.4 points to minus 2.8 points in July. The business conditions index improved from minus 7.5 points to minus 6.6 points. The survey was conducted from July 25-31, that is, before the Economic Statement was released, before the Federal Election was called and before the Reserve Bank cut interest rates to 53-year lows. On the market overall, a total of 1.8 billion shares changed hands, worth $4.8 billion. 565 were up, 350 were down and 304 were unchanged. At 4.30pm AEST the SFE 200 Futures Index was at 5116, up 56pts. Ahead tonight, retail sales data is issued together with import and export prices. Enjoy your evening. Juliette Saly CommSec Market Analyst MID-SESSION REPORT (12pm AEST) The Australian share market is making only modest gains at lunchtime in the East on Tuesday, following an uninspiring session on Wall Street overnight and after the Treasury’s PEFO (Pre-election Economic and Fiscal Outlook) came in little changed from the Government’s own economic outlook released a fortnight ago. Overnight, Wall Street finished flat in the absence of any major economic or corporate news. However Apple shares rose almost 3 per cent on rumours of a new iPhone 5S to be released in September. It’s another busy day on the reporting calendar. Property Property developer Stockland Group (SGP) has seen its net profit fall almost 80pct in part due to weakness in the housing market and a major write-down. Net profit fell 78.5 per cent to $104.6M sending SGP shares down 2.5 per cent in early trade to $3.71. Mining products supplier Bradken (BKN) has reported a 33.4pct drop in FY profit to $66.9M, blaming a weaker Aussie dollar and higher purchasing costs. BKN will pay a fully franked dividend of 18cps. Its share price has risen 6.6 per cent in early trade to $5.585 as it forecast cost cuts in Fy14. Domino’s Pizza (DMP) will spend more than $235M to take over its Japanese based sister company, agreeing to buy a 75pct stake in Domino’s Pizza Japan. DMP will also provide more than $100M of new debt funding. The company today reported a 6 per cent rise in net profit to $28.7M, while underlying profit rose 13 per cent. DMP will remain in a trading halt until Friday, last at $11.82. Business confidence has fallen to an eight month low, according to the latest NAB survey. Business confidence fell to minus 3 in July, while conditions remained steady at a reading of minus 7. So far on the market, 779 million shares have changed hands, worth $1.6 billion. 422 shares are up, 311 are down and 255 are unchanged. The Aussie dollar is buying just above US91c. Enjoy your afternoon. Date Posted: 22:38:48 08/13/13 Tue 3rd UPDATE: Japan Leads Asian Shares Higher 13/08/2013 6:56PM -- Japanese stocks rally on weaker yen -- Chinese stocks in Hong Kong continue to gain on economic hopes -- Apple suppliers higher in Taiwan (Adds information, quotes, updates/adds market levels) By Daniel Inman Asian markets were higher Tuesday with a weaker yen boosting Tokyo shares, while hopes for stability in the Chinese economy buoyed stocks in Hong Kong. The Nikkei Stock Average jumped 2.6% to 13,867.00, the sharpest percentage gain for the benchmark since Aug. 2, as the yen continued to reverse some of the strength that it exhibited in recent sessions. The U.S. dollar traded at Y97.76 in late Asian trade, compared to Y96.90 late Monday in New York. The dollar has been trading in a range of Y95 to Y100 since mid-July and "a sharp fluctuation within that band still causes reflexive buying and selling," said Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. strategist Daisuke Uno. A variety of factors combined to make the yen soften - such as a Nikkei report overnight that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has called for a study on lowering effective corporate tax rates. In addition, Monday's weaker than forecast second quarter growth data continued to weigh on the yen. The slow Japanese economic recovery could encourage further stimulus from the government, which is negative for the local currency. Looking ahead, there were expectations that forthcoming economic data from the U.S. could push the dollar-yen pair higher - including retail sales, industrial production and housing starts. "If the results come out strong, we could see the dollar rising towards Y98," said Junichi Ishikawa, market analyst at IG Securities in Tokyo, referring to U.S. retail sales, out later on Tuesday. The weaker yen boosted major Japanese exporters, with Toyota Motor up 2.3%, Sony up 1.8% and Canon 1.9% higher. A weaker yen boosts Japanese exporters' overseas income and lifts their competitiveness in overseas markets. Paper companies also outperformed in Tokyo after Daio Paper Corporation and Tokushu Tokai Paper Co. said that they would acquire a 3% stake in each other by the end of the month, a tie-up designed to boost their cooperation in the development of disposable diapers. Daio Paper Corp. added 3.0% and Tokushu Tokai Paper Co. rose 4.5%. Hong Kong pushed higher on Tuesday, with Chinese companies leading the gains, as the market remained supported by recent economic indicators pointing to stability in the region's largest economy. Last week, Chinese trade data, industrial production and new loans were all upbeat. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 1.2% to 22541.13, with the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index up 2.6% to 10185.55. The Shanghai Composite Index was up just 0.2% to 2106.16. Big mainland banks did particularly well, with Agricultural Bank of China up 5.6% and Bank of China 3.1% higher in Hong Kong. "We expect more upside ahead as investors seem to have warmed to the idea that China's economy has stabilized," said Zhang Yanbing, analyst at Zheshang Securities. In Taiwan, where the Taiex was up 1.1% to 7986.27, Apple suppliers led gains following a report that the U.S. technology firm will release new products next month: Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. rose 2.1% and Pegatron Corporation added 6.9%. Elsewhere in the region, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 1% to 5157.70 and South Korea's Kospi was up 1.5% at 1913.03. If a currency is in vogue, speculators can push its value to excessively high levels. If it goes out of fashion, it could fall to extremely low levels. Sharp movements in a currency can have significant consequences for the economy. In the first part of our two-part piece about extreme movements in exchange rates, we explore the pros and cons of a strong currency. If the Aussie breaks its one-year high above 94 cents, it will be important to know how that move will affect the economy. For an export dependent country like Australia, a strong currency has more consequences than advantages. Pros of a strong currency: 1. Stronger purchasing power''' A strong currency increases the buying power of Australians while making foreign products less expensive. Australians are more confident and willing to spend when they feel richer and the cost of imported items is lower. So when the Aussie is strong, we tend to see the sale of imports rise in relation to exports. Australians are also more willing to take international vacations when the local currency is strong, because it reduces the cost of foreign travel. 2. Potential earning surprises for importers Australian companies with a large amount of expenses in foreign currencies can see their effective costs decrease with a strong currency. For example, if an Australian company owed a US company USD$1 million at an AUD/USD exchange rate of 80 cents, that USD$1 million would be worth AUD$1.25 million. At 95 cents, it would fall to AUD$1.05 million. Similarly, a strong Aussie can increase international investments by Australian companies because it reduces the cost of cross-border mergers. At an 81 cent exchange rate, a US company worth USD$100 million would cost approximately AUD$123 million. At 95 cents, the same company would only cost about AUD$105 million - a savings of about 14 percent. 3. Lower inflation A strong currency tends to reduce inflationary pressures, which could discourage a central bank from raising interest rates - usually positive for growth but negative for the currency. Cons of a strong currency:''' 1. Hurts exporters A strong currency increases the cost of Australian goods on the global market. Exporters start to complain when the currency becomes too strong because Australia is a major exporter. They fear its trade partners (namely China) will start to look for alternative import destinations. At that point, exporters would be faced with the tough decision of risking a fall in demand or reducing prices, which could drive down earnings and trade figures. 2. Reduces foreign profitability A strong currency also negatively impacts Australian companies selling products abroad. Imagine that Foster's sells a bottle of beer in the US for USD$5. At an AUD/USD exchange rate of 81 cents, Australia-based Foster's would make AUD$6.17 per bottle. If the exchange rate went up to 97.2 cents, the revenue is only AUD$5.14. Compounded by millions of Foster's sold abroad, you can see how a strong Australian dollar can hurt Australian companies. A similar dynamic occurs in tourism - a strong currency encourages Australians to travel abroad while deterring foreigners from travelling to Australia. 3. Increases the cost of housing The Australian housing market has also received a tremendous boost from foreign demand, but a strong currency could curtail housing by reducing the value and attractiveness of Australian real estate to foreign investors. In Australia's case, a strong currency generally has more consequences than benefits. What do you think is the largest benefit of a strong currency?
