I love finding new and exciting places for the family to visit and want to share them with you. I hope you find it interesting and add it to the 'like' list. Event: 08/11/2013 - 31/12/2013The most iconic Christmas event in Melbourne Picture from www.myer.com.aularge image The iconic Myer Melbourne store is set for its 58th year of the traditional Myer Christmas Windows with the unveiling of this year's theme on Friday 8th of November 2013. Night Photography Workshop for Beginners Saturday, 7th of December @ 05:30pm - $99 - 4 places leftJoin Jennifer Hawkins and Lauren Phillips as they await Santa's arrival for the 12pm unveiling of the animated Myer windows. Each year Myer dresses its Bourke St windows with animated Christmas displays as a gift to the City of Melbourne and the people of the City show their appreciation by turning up in the thousands, waiting in queues up to a few hours to get a glimpse of these famous windows that house the amazing Christmas displays. In fact these windows have a reported average of 1 million people coming from all over Australia and the world to see the famous Christmas windows each year. Work on the displays start 6 months before we get to see them, with people working on them in studios and factories to have them ready for the unveiling. The theme of the windows is always a top secret until they are revealed to the public. Each of the windows have a different scene of the chosen theme. Picture from www.bubsonthemove.comlarge image Some of the previous themes were taken from story books, nursery rhymes, film or theatre and have included The 12 Days of Christmas, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, Wizard of Oz, Seven Dwarves, Snuggle Pot and Cuddle Pie and A Christmas Carol to mention just a few of the previous displays. Each of the windows display a continuing scene of the chosen theme that isn't revealed until the unveiling. The first Myer Christmas windows display was Santa and the Olympics in 1956 (which was the same year that Melbourne hosted the Olympic games and television was introduced to Melbourne). For the full list of displays since, click here. Christmas train in Myer large image Last year we visited and the queues were three deep with security guards making sure nobody skipped the queue. After watching for a few moments we decided to take the children up to Level 6 within Myer to visit Santa and take a ride on the train. The children loved it and was nice to escape from the crowds. My tip would be to go in the 'off peak' times (either early or late) which admittedly is difficult with young children. Santa takes some getting used to large image Christmas in the city is a very special time of year as decorations line the streets, Christmas trees glowing, fairy lights shining, sounds of carols playing, shop front displays with shiny gift boxes and tissue paper; these are a few of the very special things.
