Source: News Corp Australia The rights of unborn babies have been reinforced under legislation passed in the NSW lower house. The controversial Foetal Rights Bill, known as Zoe's Law, was put to a conscience vote today but must still be passed by the upper house. Following weeks of heated and often emotional debate in the lower house, the amended bill, which recognises the existence of a 20-week-old foetus as a living person, was passed by 63 votes to 26. Zoe's Law Bill (No 2) was introduced to parlaiment by The Entrance state Liberal MP Chris Spence and would allow grievous bodily harm charges to be brought against someone who hurt a foetus more than 20 weeks old or 400 grams. Opponents of the Bill have argued this could be a gateway to charging women for having abortions. The legislation was inspired by Central Coast mum Brodie Donegan who was struck by a car on Christmas Day 2009 just meters from her Ourimbah home. Mrs Donegan, who was eight months pregnant, suffered multiple injuries and her daugher Zoe was stillborn. The driver was jailed for two year and three months with a non-parole period of nine monhts but was not charged over her death because she was not recognised under existing laws. Mr Spence said the vote was a "fantastic result". "This amended version is not about abortion - it never was or will be. Far more votes came our way than we thought, and this overwhelming result sends a clear message to the Upper House, when this issue will be debated some time in the new year," Mr Spence said. Source: News Corp Australia MUM'S MIXED EMOTIONS Brodie Donegan said this day has been a long-time coming, describing the experience as "draining and difficult". "I have mixed emotions today, but it is really good that the Bill has got this far. The journey has been very difficult and the whole process has been drawn out and harder than I expected," Mrs Donegan said. The Bill was introduced to the state's lower house by the Mr Spence on 19 September and has been debated for an hour each Thursday of a sitting week since. "I think it will probably get through the lower house, but I don't want to get ahead of myself. There are still a lot of people in the upper house who dead-set against the bill and have been campaiging against it, in some cases being very insensitive," she said. "People against the law see it as a threat to abortion and a threat to the rights of women. I find that really difficult and it makes me cranky, because I am a woman too. "I try not to take things personally, such as comments on Twitter and articles in the press, but I do. I just try to think about the reasons why I am doing this. This isn't something that we've just come up with on the back of an envelope. It's taken nine months to be drafted with very careful consideration." She paid tribute to the efforts of Mr Spence. "Chris and his staff have been here all the way through and very supportive. He calls and tells me everything will be okay. He's copped a lot more than I have." "At the end of the day I'm not a lawyer or a politician, I'm a mother. You have to stick your original intention and to trust the process and trust the people advising you." THE BILL Zoe's Law Bill (2) amends the Crimes Act so that a person can be charged with the grievous bodily harm of a foetus that is either 20 weeks old or 400 grams by allowing it to be treated as a living person. It does not apply to anything done with a pregnant woman's consent or during a medical procedure. Sebastian had an agent bidding on his behalf, believed to be his financial adviser. The spacious property had a reserve of $3 million. The home attracted an opening bid of $2.5 million, with Sebastian's agent placing her first bid at $2.7 million. The impressive home, which has a tennis court and heated pool, sits on a 1336sq m block and has been in the same family for more than 75 years. The home at 6 Eastbourne Ave sold prior to auction to a young local family, according to Belle Property Bondi Junction agent Daniel Gillespie. "All the interested parties were local," Mr Gillespie said. With 30 buyers through the property during the campaign there were three that were very interested, he said. "The buyers loved the position - that was what it was all about for them." A Mascot property has sold for $1.122 million, the highest price seen for a semi-detached house in the suburb. The property at 48 Hughes Ave attracted 11 registered bidders with an opening bid of $900,000. The four-bedroom home sold for $72,000 over reserve. Agent Jenine McMahon from Ray White Maroubra said there was a lot of interest in the home with around 20 contracts issued. "It had a lot of character and charm, with a good room configuration," Ms McMahon said. RP Data figures show the median price for a house in Mascot is $803,000. |

And my family has reached just such a time. We ask much of our families in this place. And in the case of my family, well above and way beyond the call of duty. The truth is the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, which regrettably have become the stock and trade for so many in public life, hit home to our families as well. This applies particularly to the families of our parliamentary leaders. For our family, recent statements since the September election have been particularly hurtful. As parliamentarians, we might say we become inured to all of this, although I doubt it. For our families, however, I believe it becomes harder, not easier, with the passing of the years. And it affects their ability to get on building their own lives and careers as well. My family have given their all for me in public life, and for the nation. And it is now time I gave something back to them. This has been the product of much soul searching for us as a family over the last few months. And the decision I have made has not been taken lightly, particularly given the deep attachment I have for the community I have proudly represented in this place these last 15 years. But for me, my family is everything. Always has been. Always will be, which is why I will not be continuing as a member of this parliament beyond this week. I also believe it was right and proper that I report my decision to the parliament at the earliest opportunity. And that day is today. And I have chosen to do so now so as to create minimal disruptions to the normal proceedings of the House. My predecessors as Prime Minister, Prime Ministers Whitlam, Fraser, Hawke and Keating, reached similar decisions to leave the parliament before the subsequent election. As did would-be Prime Ministers Hewson, Costello and Downer. I wish to thank my local community, the good burghers of Griffith, for electing me to this place. They are good people. And they are a great community. And I am proud of the new libraries, classrooms and multi-purpose facilities we have built in each and every one of my local primary schools. And the hundreds of new laptops in high schools which before had none, or very few. I just love the smiles on the kids' faces, and on their teachers' faces as I visit them, and schools like them right across Australia. I also thank the people of Australia for electing me as their Prime Minister. To have served as Prime Minister of Australia has been a great honour afforded to very few in our country's history. For the future, I wish the Prime Minister and his government well because I wish Australia well. The Prime Ministership of this Commonwealth is not easy. It is the hardest job in the land. The expectations of whoever holds the office are infinite while the resources available are finite. And so I wish Tony, his wife Margie and their family all the best for the rigors of high office that inevitably lie ahead. This is a good country. Australians are by instinct a good people. The rest of the world, more often than we think, also looks to us to help provide answers to the challenges facing humankind, not just tending to our own. And so too I wish my good friends the Treasurer, and the Foreign Minister, all the very best for the complex global challenges that lie ahead. As I do my good friend the Member for Wentworth, who remains a particular adornment to the parliament. For the Australian Labor Party, the party of which I have been a proud member for more than 30 years, and a parliamentary member for fifteen, the future of Australian progressive politics lies within your hands. I wish the newly elected leader Bill Shorten all the best in the great task that lies ahead. Having served as Leader of the Opposition myself, this is never a position for the faint-hearted. There are always long dark nights of the soul. But believe it or not, morning does come, often sooner than you think. Bill brings great strengths to the position and I have every confidence he will lead Labor's return to the Treasury benches. I also wish to thank Albo for his extraordinary service as Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the House. Albo is the most formidable parliamentarian in this place, as is recognized on both sides of the chamber. He also has a passionate commitment to the cause of progressive politics. And in my long years in this House, his loyalty has been beyond reproach. I would also thank Chris Bowen for his great contribution to our party and government, and his future contribution as well. It is a singular honour to serve in the high office of Prime Minister of Australia. I have in the past few days looked at my first speech in this place back in 1998. You will be pleased to know that none of us have changed one bit in the years since them. I said back then that I believed politics was about power, and whether that power was for the many or the few. Fifteen years later, that remains my view. I said back then that I believed in the politics of hope, not in the politics of fear. Fifteen years later, that remains my view, because as Martin Luther King has famously remarked, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice." I also said way back then, that I had no interest in being here for the sake of being here, and that the only point of being here was to make a difference for the betterment of all. Fifteen years later, that remains my view as well. In fact I have found nothing that I would change from my first speech all those years ago. I set out to achieve many things as Prime Minister. In some of these I succeeded. In others l did not. Such is the nature of politics. But when the history is one day written, detached from the passions of the time, perhaps it will be remembered we navigated Australia through the worst global economic crisis since the Depression, without recession, without the scourge of mass unemployment, and with our triple A credit ratings intact. It may also be remembered that we helped establish the G20 as the premier institution of global economic governance as well as securing Australian membership of it. That we ratified Kyoto because we believe in the reality of climate change and we acted on our commitments to reduce carbon emissions. That we brought into being Australia's first ever national school curriculum, our first ever paid parental leave scheme, and the biggest age pension increase in our history. And that as a nation we finally delivered an official apology to Aboriginal Australians. Nothing has brought me greater joy in political life than the smiles I have seen on the faces of our Aboriginal brothers and sisters, young and old, country and city, as a result of the apology. I hope though that we have achieved some healing of the soul, although it will only be through the final closing of the gap that we achieve a healing of broken bodies as well. It was also my privilege to be asked by my parliamentary colleagues, including Bill, Albo and Chris to return to the Prime Ministership earlier this year. This too was not a task for the faint hearted. I was glad that together we were able to save the furniture, and in fact do considerably better than that, and return Labor as a fighting force for the next election. More importantly, we began the process of reforming the party though the new democratic processes for electing our leader. But I believe this is but the first step. Our party must continue to reform, to be the party of the reforming, progressive center of Australian politics: the party of the future economy, of social equity and of environmental sustainability. The party of working people, the party of small business, and the party of our local communities. And a fully democratised party where we also see the election of our national conference, our national executive and our Senate candidates though direct democratic election by our party membership. And in time primaries for our candidates for this house through a shared electoral college of both our party members and our registered supporters. In the meantime, I look forward to a full, democratic preselection process for all local party members to elect our next candidate for Griffith. Madam Speaker, for the future my passion remains with indigenous reconciliation and in the year ahead I plan to establish a National Apology Foundation to keep alive the spirit and the substance of the apology I delivered in this place six years ago. I will also continue to support the great causes of homelessness, organ donation and the future of multicultural Australia including foreign language education and inter- faith dialogue. As members of this House also know well, I am both passionately Australian, and passionately a citizen of the world. I intend to be active in the international community in areas where I can make a genuine contribution to peace and stability, global economic governance and sustainable development including climate change. In this context, I will also focus on China's future role in the region and the world. As Australia is the voice of the west in the east, and in time I hope a voice for the east in the west, I believe there is a useful role for Australians to play as an engaged, intelligent and sympathetic bridge between these two hemispheres, and between China and the United States in particular, in the challenging half century that lies ahead. Finally Madam speaker, I wish to thank through you, and the Clerk, all the parliamentary staff for their unfailing professionalism and friendship all these years. It is they who uphold the great institution that is the parliament itself. I wish to thank the Australian Public Service as one of our great national institutions, and its professional commitment to the defence of the continuing national interests of our Commonwealth. I also wish to thank all my staff, past and present, Prime Ministerial, Foreign Ministerial and electoral, for their loyalty, hard work and friendship over the years - and above all their overriding commitment to Australia. I thank too the press gallery for their coverage both good and bad, and continue to encourage them to apply all necessary programmatic specificity to the task of holding the government of the day to account. To the members of this parliament, both friend and foe, and I can confidently say they are spread equally across both sides of this chamber, I thank you for the privilege of working with you. Whatever has been said, and a lot that has been hurtful has been said, I bear none any malice. Life is too short for that. For new members of this place in particular, I wish you well. This parliament is a great institution. As members, you will choose what type of parliamentarian you wish to become. Positive or negative. Knowledgeable or otherwise. And to my life partner Therese for enduring 32 years of marriage on this very day, to my daughter Jess, her husband Albert, our beautiful granddaughter Josephine, my son Nick and his wife Zara, and our youngest son Marcus, you mean everything to me. In the days ahead, Therese and I will be spending some time together overseas to plan the next phase of our lives. I would ask my good friends in the fourth estate to give us privacy as I have ceased being a public figure. And I'm not planning on any interviews anytime soon. Australia is a remarkable country. It is the land of remarkable opportunity. To think that the son of a dairy farmer, whose family had little money, could secure a place at university through the Whitlam reforms, and upon graduation become a diplomat, then serve as the chief of staff to a Premier, be elected to parliament to represent the Australian Labor Party, and ultimately to be elected as Leader of the Opposition, and then Prime Minister, says everything about this extraordinary country Australia. And for these remarkable opportunities, I will always be grateful, so thank you Australia. And so, having said all that, on this final occasion in the parliament, and as is now officially recorded in the classics for occasions such as this, it really is time for me to zip. Video: Kevin Rudd: A political life Rudd a 'big figure' in Australian public life: Abbott Mr Abbott paid tribute Mr Rudd, saying his retirement is a significant event in the history of the Parliament. "To lose someone who has been one of the big figures in this Parliament and one of the big figures in the life, the public life of our country over the best part of two decades," he said. Mr Abbott also paid tribute to Mr Rudd's apology to Indigenous Australians, calling it "something to crown an amazing public life". "Much as I admire and appreciate and put on a huge pedestal his immediate predecessor (John Howard), in this respect at least, he had lacked the imagination to grasp that opportunity and the member for Griffith, Kevin, he had the decency to see that here was something that needed to be done," he said. "He did it with courage, with decency, compassion and that alone is an extraordinary achievement." As a political opponent, but as someone who has known the Member for Griffith quite well for a long time, I salute him and I wish him and his family all the best for the future. Tony Abbott Tributes flowed from both sides of Parliament, with former opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull saying Mr Rudd was toughest person he had ever encountered in politics. "The member for Griffith was kind enough to refer to me as his friend and I am touched by that, Kevin, I really am. After you lost.. initially I was very worried about you because I'd known how low I had sunk in a much less difficult loss of leadership," he said, "[But] as I got to know you I realised what an extraordinarily tough individual you are. Your determination is unequalled by anyone I've worked with in politics. I don't know anyone that is just so filled with energy, and determination, and a preparedness to overcome any setback, and that is a triumph of the human spirit." Shorten speaks of Rudd's enduring popularity Treasurer Joe Hockey also took the opportunity to wish his old Sunrise sparring partner well, saying Mr Rudd's granddaughter "could be well satisfied that her life is better for his contribution to our nation". Mr Shorten pointed to Mr Rudd's stewardship of the Australian economy as a key achievement of the former prime minister, and spoke of his enduring popularity with the Australian people. "Even his harshest critics, of which there are some, would say that he does have a special relationship with the Australian people," But he also referenced the bitter feud that cost both Mr Rudd and former prime minister Julia Gillard their positions. "This is a tumultuous era in Labor and, with the Member for Griffith's resignation tonight, part of it comes to a close," he said. "He has been the leader of the Labor Party in difficult circumstances for the Labor Party. We emerged after a significant election loss with a party that is more united, stronger, and more cohesive than it would have been if that reform was not put in place under Kevin Rudd's leadership. Anthony Albanese "He has been part of tumultuous debates within our party in the last number of years, But I do think that most fair-minded people will recognise that when he returned to the task of PM in those weeks before the last election... his contribution helped mean that the quality of Australian democracy was improved." Mr Rudd's former deputy Anthony Albanese, however, paid tribute to the decision to return to leadership. "He could have retired having led Labor to victory in 2007.... no-one could have questioned what the outcomes might have been in 2010, and retired as an undefeated prime minister from the Australian electorate," he said. "[But] he chose to put the party that he loves first before his own interests and the interests of his family and I thank him for that, because Labor is competitive." And he said Mr Rudd's reform of the Labor leadership process had revitalised and democratised the party. "We emerged after a significant election loss with a party that is more united, stronger, and more cohesive than it would have been if that reform was not put in place under Kevin Rudd's leadership," he said. I struggle to find what positive contribution Rudd made to our country. Gillard's usurpation made Rudd look a victim as she pursued bitter feuds within the ALP. She was a disaster in spite of the love-ins being arranged for her lately. Rudd - Gillard showed us that the ALP is most interested in power and gaining it by whatever means. Visionaries are not always easy to be around, but there driven with the best of intentions for the good of the people. Rudd was a god send for those of us who got screwed by Howards Work Choices, we were paid our normal hourly rates for weekend's, our working conditions & wages took a hard hit and we were back to strugling to pay our bill's. Gillard & Co's midnight slaughter of a sitting PM, was the most disdracefull cowardly act ever committed in Australian politics. Little did we know at the time, that Gillards inability to communicate with the issues in hand, but its was to be come the failing of her leadership of the Labor Party. The dumping of Rudd hit Larbor hard in the election of 2010, Abbott couldnt form a government so Gillard & Co got in by a hair. Rudd had a positive out look for Australiss future and never talked our country down unlike Abbott whos destroying our country by say things are bad, out right cruelty to asylum seekers, and cutting aid to the most needy of the world. I would say he didn't because he still harboured visions of once again leading the party, but subsequent events and public maulings from ex-colleagues, who probably thought the same, made it clear even to him that this was a bridge too far. I'm sure Abbott will arrange a cushy little number for Rudd at the UN or some ambassadorial role given his undoubted nouse on foreign affairs. Talent should not go wasted. However I with many others welcome Rudd's departure as he is a great liability to the stability of the ALP. Show DetailsHide Details You can see there are still a lot of good Rudd haters by some of these comments. Kevin Rudd, in his time in Parliament and as Prime Minister, was a mixed bag. He did some good things and he did some very good things. Just as some of the things he did are questionable, but history will shine a better light on that. It won't be the comments here. I did love how Hockey tried to rewrite his own parties history in this this morning. He found it very hard to give much credit to Rudd and labor for what they did to save the Australian economy and people from the worst of the GFC. He had to add that it was because of the low level of debt left by the Howard government. That is what has always got me about this debate on this issue by the coalition. Federal debt may have been virtually nil at the time when the GFC hit. That changed the moment the GFC hit. The economy changed with the GFC and any former budget surplus was gone. It needed to be saved which is what labor set about doing. Hockey ignores the fact that Howard left this country with the states carrying debt. He left the country with very high corporate and private debt. Howard did a lot of cost shifting from the public purse to the corporate and private purse. He also left this country with a significant structural budget deficit. And that is not just me saying that. A lot of economists have said that. Show DetailsHide Details Kevin Rudd is doing a decent thing in retiring, to allow new Labor to regroup without the baggage from the past (or as little of it as is possible given the the circumstances with Bill Shorten as leader). He is also doing what he had no choice but to do. The media and political machinations have seen to it that this would be a foregone conclusion. He is misunderstood by many and loved and hated by many more. I believe that his intentions were good, but his delivery was flawed and his political affiliations not strong within his own party. A shame that it could not have turned out differently. He sits at odds with his own party. A man not of his own time. Despite reports from disgruntled politicians and the media, his family stands as a testimony of the true character of this man. Interesting to see where he goes from here. Never and still don't like many of the right wingers in the Labor party they scream the loudest and point fingers but it is they that started the wrecking of the labor party, they never should have knifed you in the back. Gillard was a huge disappointment under her leadership too many policies, Labor policies lurched to the right and popularity plummeted as a result, (mind you I liked the plain packaging legistation) somebody said somewhere that much of the right in Labor could fit right in with the Liberal party ideologically how right they were. In fact that is where I would prefer to see them. Just watch the right try and parachute one of their own into Rudd's seat. If all those things that are alleged, are remotely true about his temperament then, I for one would have clipped him under the ear, quicker than a Deaf Adder strike. That's if I had to work with him, of course. I think we would have got on famously; trading short sharp jibes every day. Kevin is a worker and, the work comes first. He genuinely loves people for who they are and, what they have made of themselves. He accepts, with the inquiring curiosity of an alert mind, the characteristics and idiosyncrasies of the individual. He sensed that there was something emerging, that was wrong with the ALP and, was going to do something about it. Now in opposition,that something might be heading towards the Parliamentary ALP like a train wreck. You wouldn't want to be around. Time to go. How and when he did go was always a matter between him and his family on one hand and, him and the Electorate of Griffith that he served so well. Speculation is rising that Air New Zealand (AIZ.AX) could move to take control of Virgin Australia (VAH.AX) within the next 12 months. Air New Zealand currently holds 23% of Virgin, but it?s likely to be a three-way tussle for Australia?s second largest domestic airline, with Etihad and Singapore Airlines both holding 19.9%. Sir Richard Branson?s Virgin Group still holds 10% of the airline, but could sell out to the highest bidder. Air New Zealand is reportedly keen to gain more exposure to Australia?s $10 billion Australian domestic market, which is more than 5 times the size of the New Zealand market, and also has higher growth rates according to some analysts. The airline has approval to increase its stake in Virgin to 25.9%, but has publicly denied it was interested in taking over full control of Virgin. At the same time Etihad and Singapore Airlines could lift their stakes to 26% over the next twelve months without triggering a formal takeover under creep provisions, or if they receive Foreign Investment Review Board approval. There are suggestions that the mostly likely scenario is for Air New Zealand and Singapore to team up to take the airline private, after acquiring Branson?s stake. Air New Zealand and Singapore are allies, with few competing operations, and both are keen to keep a foot in the Australian domestic market. Etihad on the other hand is a fierce competitor to Singapore Airlines, making a tie-up between all three major shareholders in Virgin an unlikely proposition. Sitting on the sidelines is Qantas Airways (QAN.AX), with any change of control over Virgin having major implications for the airline. Qantas has long complained to both sides of government that it is competing in an unfair environment, with Virgin?s ease of access to capital, thanks to its foreign investors. Foolish takeaway Whatever happens over the next 12 months, minority shareholders in Qantas and Virgin are likely to be the losers. Both airlines are adding extra capacity into the domestic market, Virgin to steal market share away from its dominant rival, and Qantas to protect its 65% market share. That is likely to see both suffer when it comes to revenues and generating a return on shareholder?s capital, and could see their share prices slide. "Many lives were lost, a huge number of people are missing, and basic services such as drinking water and electricity have been cut off," Sebastien Sujobert, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) office in Tacloban, said in a statement. More than 4 million people were in the path of the storm's powerful winds and sea surges, David-Pierre Marquet told ABC News. With more than 300,000 people now scattered across 1,200 evacuation centers, aid workers grew concerned that the utter destruction is complicating relief efforts. Both the Philippine Red Cross and the ICRC's offices in Tacloban forced staff to relocate from the typhoon-ravaged city, the ICRC said. While supplies including food, hygiene kits and water treatment units, were sent from Manila were to Tacloban before the storm made landfall, they have yet to arrive, according to an ICRC statement. Emergency relief is anticipated to arrive in Tacloban on Monday, but "to make matters worse, the security situation is tense," ICRC spokesman David-Pierre Marquet said. "People here need every type of aid," he said. Regional police chief Elmer Soria told the AP that on Saturday he was briefed by Leyte provincial Gov. Dominic Petilla, who told him that there were about 10,000 deaths on the island. Most of the deaths were from drowning or caused by collapsed buildings, he said. Tacloban city administrator Tecson Lim said that the death toll in the city alone "could go up to 10,000," the AP reports. "We have so many dead people. We don't have bags," said mayor Remedios Petilla of Palo, a municipality in the Eastern Visayas region that was hard hit. A half-dozen central Philippine islands are now reeling from Typhoon Haiyan after it made landfall early Friday morning. The storm, with sustained winds of nearly 200 miles per hour, flattened entire towns in the country's southern and central regions. The number of families affected by the typhoon has reached 2 million, composed of 9.53 million people, according to a statement from the Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development. Some 96,039 displaced families with 449,416 people are staying in 1,790 evacuation centers, while 36,627 other families with 182,379 people temporarily sought shelter in their friends and relatives' houses, according to the statement. The typhoon made landfall at 4:40 a.m. local time near Guiuan, on the Philippine island of Samar, about 405 miles southeast of the country's capital, Manila. Smith, a leading trainer of Thoroughbred racehorses, Waterhouse was born in Scotland but raised in Sydney. After graduating from the University of New South Wales, she worked as an actor for a time, appearing in both Australian and English television series. Having been worked under her father for a period of 15 years, Waterhouse was granted an Australian Jockey Club (AJC) licence in 1992, and trained her first Group One (G1) winner later that year. In 1994, after her father became ill, she took over his Tulloch Lodge stable, and she has since trained over 100 G1 winners and won seven Sydney trainers' premierships. She was also the trainer of Fiorente, the winner of the 2013 Melbourne Cup, becoming the second woman (and first Australian woman) to train a winner of that race. Smith MBE, a leading trainer of thoroughbred racehorses, who was based in Sydney. She was educated at the Kincoppal-Rose Bay School in Sydney, and completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of New South Wales in 1975.[3] Waterhouse made a name for herself as a model and actor, including in the Australian drama The Young Doctors before moving to England and appearing in the Doctor Who story The Invasion of Time.[4] She then returned to Australia where she served an apprenticeship under her father for fifteen years before getting her own trainer's licence.[1] Training career[edit] This section needs additional citations for verification. (November 2013) Waterhouse was granted her Australian Jockey Club (AJC) licence in January 1992, although this was made difficult as her husband, Robbie Waterhouse, was banned over his involvement in the Fine Cotton scandal. AJC rules at the time stipulated that the spouse of a banned person could not be licensed, although this was subsequently overturned. Her first winner was the horse Gifted Poet in March 1992, and her first Group One winner was Te Akau Nick in the Metropolitan Handicap in October that year. After her father, T. J. Smith became ill, he passed on the Tulloch Lodge stable to her in the 1994¨C95 season.[1] Waterhouse first achieved fame in Australia when Nothin' Leica Dane came into the Melbourne Cup in 1995 after winning the Victoria Derby three days earlier. The three-year-old colt ran second in the Melbourne Cup, a race which no three-year old had won since Skipton in 1941. During the 1996¨C97 season, she had ten Group One wins and won her first Sydney premiership. In 2001, Waterhouse trained the first, second, and third place-getters in the Golden Slipper and added the first of three successive Sydney training premierships, culminating with 156 wins in 2002/03, equalling her father's Sydney training record. At the 2013 Sydney Cup day, owner John Singleton sacked Waterhouse live on television after her son Tom Waterhouse, a bookmaker, allegedly told acquaintances that Singleton's horse More Joyous would lose the All Ages Stakes, which it did. Both Gai Waterhouse and Tom Waterhouse denied any wrong doing.[7] Stewards laid two charges against Waterhouse; (1) 'fail to report to the stewards any condition or occurrence that may affect the running of a horse in a race', and (2) 'having failed to keep a record of treatments administered to a horse'.[8] On 27 May, Waterhouse was found guilty and fined A$5500.[9] On 5 November 2013, Waterhouse won her first Melbourne Cup with Fiorente. He traveled through the United Kingdom, and the Middle East, and spent more than four years in Birre, Cascais, 25 km near Lisbon, Portugal and a year in Vienna, Austria. After his parents divorced[7] in 1973, Adams and his mother returned to settle in Vancouver, British Columbia. Music career[edit]Early career[edit]From the ages of 14–18, Adams worked as a dish washer to save money for a proper guitar. He started auditioning as a guitarist while rehearsing his own band in his mother's rented basement in North Vancouver. Adams elected to sing until they found a singer, but they never found one, and his auditioning landed him a few jobs, with bands like Shock and Sweeney Todd, who in 1976 released If Wishes Were Horses with the 15-year-old Adams as the singer.[8] He quit school to play nightclubs and go on the road and upon his return he settled into the Vancouver studio scene, working as a background vocalist for the CBC and working with keyboardist Robbie King, whom Adams attributes as having given him his first paying session. In 1978, at the age of 18, Adams met Jim Vallance introduced by a mutual friend in a Vancouver music store. Vallance was the former drummer and principal songwriter for Vancouver based rock band Prism and had recently quit that band to focus on a career as a studio musician and songwriter. They agreed to meet at Vallance's home studio a few days later, which proved to be the beginning of a partnership which still exists today. Later in 1978, Adams signed to A&M records for the paltry sum of one dollar.[9] Some of the first demos written in 1978 have surfaced over the years, most notably "I'm Ready" (recorded for both the album Cuts Like a Knife and later his release for MTV Unplugged) and "Remember," which was recorded on his first album. Both songs were covered by other artists even before his first album was released. Also recorded during this time was "Let Me Take You Dancing," which made the Canadian RPM chart in March 1979 and its B-Side "Don't Turn Me Away". "Straight From The Heart" was also written during this period. The song was later recorded for Adams's third album "Cuts Like A Knife" in 1983 and released as a single, becoming Adams's first top ten record in the US in 1983. 1980s[edit]Adams's self-titled debut album was released in February 1980, and marked the beginning of what was to become a long songwriting partnership between Adams and co-writer Jim Vallance. With the exception of "Remember" and "Wastin' Time", most of the album was recorded from 29 October up until 29 November 1979 at Manta Studios in Toronto and co-produced by Adams and Vallance. The album was certified gold in Canada in 1986.[10] Adams's second album, You Want It You Got It, was recorded in New York City in two weeks and it marked Adams's first album co-produced by Bob Clearmountain.[citation needed] It was released in 1981 and contained the FM radio hit "Lonely Nights," but it was not until his third album that he achieved international recognition, popularity and sales. The album peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200 album chart and achieved three times platinum status in Canada, platinum in the United States and gold in Australia.[10][11][12] Adams's album, Reckless, co-produced by Adams and Bob Clearmountain, peaked at number one on the Billboard 200. The album was released in November 1984 and featured the singles, "Run to You", "Summer of '69", "Heaven", "One Night Love Affair", "Somebody", and "It's Only Love", a duet with Tina Turner. All the singles had accompanying music videos and all charted on the Billboard Hot 100 but only "Run to You", "Summer of '69", and "Heaven" peaked in the top ten. "Heaven" became the most successful single from Reckless at the time of its release on the pop charts, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and number nine on the mainstream rock chart.[11] "It's Only Love" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. In 1986, the song won an MTV award for Best Stage Performance.[13] After the release of the album, Adams was nominated for Best Male Rock Performance.[13] The album is Adams's best-selling album in the United States and was certified five times platinum.[14] In December 1984, Adams embarked on a massive 2-year world tour to launch the album starting in Canada and United States, then into Japan, Australia, back to the UK and again to Canada. After winning four Juno Awards, he headed south towards the American West Coast, culminating with 2 dates at the studded Paladium in Los Angeles.[15] After the tour in the United States, Adams took part of a grand ensemble of Canadian artists named Northern Lights, who recorded the song "Tears Are Not Enough" for the African famine relief effort. Adams later headed back to Europe for a fifty-city concert tour with rock singer Tina Turner, culminating in April with his return to London to headline three sold-out shows at the Hammersmith Odeon.[15] Adams began the first leg of his tour entitled "World Wide in '85" which started in Oklahoma and ended in October 1985.[15] Adams later visited Vancouver, Canada, and afterward returned to the American East Coast to play 2 sold-out concerts in New York.[15] The follow-up album to Reckless was Into the Fire which was released in 1987. The album was recorded at Cliffhanger Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia and mixed at AIR Studios in London and Warehouse Studio in Vancouver. This album contained the hit songs "Heat of the Night" and "Hearts on Fire" and hit the Top 10 on both sides of the Atlantic.[citation needed] In 1989 Adams did backup singing on Mötley Crüe's album Dr. Feelgood and also on Belinda Carlisle's song "Whatever It Takes" which appeared on her Album Runaway Horses.[citation needed] 1990s[edit]Adams's next album, Waking Up the Neighbours, co-produced by Adams and Mutt Lange, peaked at number six on the Billboard 200.[11] It was even more successful on the other side of the Atlantic, reaching number 1 on both big European markets, the UK and Germany. The album was released in September 1991 and featured "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You", his second #1 hit single in the Billboard Hot 100. This song was featured on the album and in the movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner and Alan Rickman. The single topped the charts in numerous countries around the world including big markets such as the US, the UK, France, Australia and Germany. "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" spent 16 consecutive weeks at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart, breaking a record previously held by Slim Whitman with Rose Marie since 1955. It also achieved record-breaking sales in the US.[14][16][17] Canadian content regulations were revised in 1991 to allow radio stations to credit airplay of this album towards their legal requirements to play Canadian music.[17] Adams won a Grammy Award in 1991 for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or for Television.[18][19] Adams further supported the album with his tour, Waking Up the World which started on 4 October 1991, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. On 18 December 1991, Adams played two first-ever shows in Reykjavík, Iceland and then performed in the U.S. with a concert at the Ritz Theatre in New York City on 10 January.[15] It was a sell-out in less than twenty minutes.[15] In attendance were music legends Ben E. King and Nona Hendryx.[15] The Canadian leg of the Waking Up The World Tour kicked off in Sydney, Nova Scotia on 13 January 1992, and wrapped up with a standing room only concert in Vancouver, Canada, on 31 January. In February 1992, he started touring in New Zealand and Australia for seven dates—kicking off with a press conference in Sydney. On 21 February, the tour headed to Japan for approximately a dozen shows in six cities. The tour continued through several European countries in June 1992, including Italy, Germany, Holland and Scandinavia, and in July 1992, Bryan performed for the first time in Hungary and Turkey (where he filmed his video for "Do I Have To Say The Words?"). During the long tour, further singles from the Waking Up the Neighbours album were released: In the US, the rocky "Can't Stop This Thing We Started" peaked at number 2, and "Do I Have to Say the Words?" reached number 11. In the UK, "Thought I Died and Gone to Heaven" was the most successful single behind "(Everything I Do) I Do it for You" by reaching the Top 10. In September through December 1993, the tour took place in the US. The Asian tour headed to Thailand, Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong in February 1993, before returning to the US during March through May.[15][19] In 1993 he collaborated with Rod Stewart and Sting for the single "All for Love" written for the Motion Picture Soundtrack of the movie Three Musketeers. The single topped the charts worldwide. In November 1993 Adams released a compilation album entitled So Far So Good, that again topped the Charts in numerous countries such as the UK, Germany and Australia. It included a brand new song called "Please Forgive Me", that became another number 1 single in Australia as well as reaching the Top 3 in the US, the UK and Germany. It was followed in 1995 by, "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" (song released with the Motion Picture Soundtrack of the movie Don Juan DeMarco). It became another number 1 in the US and Australia as well as a Top 5 hit in the UK and Germany. Released in June 1996, the album 18 til I Die contained the UK Top 10 singles "The Only Thing That Looks Good on Me" and "Lets Make a Night to Remember". The album peaked at number thirty-one on the Billboard 200 in the United States and held that position for three weeks.[11] It was more successful in Europe and Australia and reached the top spot on the UK charts for Adams's third number 1 in a row.[20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29] The album has been certified platinum in the United States and is Adams last studio effort which has been certified by the RIAA.[14] 18 til I Die was certified three times platinum in Canada and Australia and two times platinum in the UK. On 27 July Adams performed at the Wembley Stadium in London in front of a crowd of about 70,000. It was his second sold-out concert there and it is often considered as his biggest concert ever as it went out live to 25 countries and fans from all over the world came up to watch the performance.It also received rave reviews from critics and fans alike.[10][12][30] In December 1997, Adams released MTV Unplugged with three new tracks: "Back to You", "A Little Love" and "When You Love Someone". "Back to You" was the first single, followed by "I'm Ready", an acoustic version of the Cut's Like A Knife track. The album was a top 10 success in Germany while both singles reached the top 20 in the UK. In 1996, Adams joined good friend & idol Don Henley on stage with a Duet at Live at Honors, Everybody Knows. On a Day Like Today was released in 1998 and was the first studio album since 1981's You Want It You Got It which wasn't certified by the RIAA.[14] This release coincided with his contract being sold to Interscope Records. Despite Interscope's involvement or lack of, On a Day Like Today enjoyed tremendous success internationally, entering the Top 5 in Germany and was certified platinum in the UK. To commemorate the millennium, Adams released The Best of Me, his most comprehensive collection of songs at that time, which also included two new songs, the title track "The Best of Me" and the UK number 1 track "Don't Give Up". The album reached the Top 10 in Germany and was certified three times platinum in Canada and Platinum in the UK. An official music video was made of the song, in which Adams also appears.[32] In 2002, Adams wrote and performed the songs for the DreamWorks animated film, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. The songs were included on the film's soundtrack. The most successful single from the soundtrack was "Here I Am", a British Top 5 and German Top 20 hit. The song also gave him his fourth Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Song from a Motion Picture. In 2004, ARC Weekly released its chart of top pop artists since the last 25 years and Adams came up at number 13 in the chart with four number-one singles, ten top five hits and 17 top ten hits. Six years after the release of On a Day Like Today, Room Service was released in September 2004. It topped the charts in Germany and Switzerland and peaked at number four in the UK, selling 440,000 copies in its first week in Europe and thus debuted at number one on Billboard's European album chart. The single, "Open Road", was the most successful single from the album and peaked at number one in Canada and number twenty-one in the UK. In May 2008, the album was also released in the US but charted only at number 134 on the Billboard 200. In 2005, Anthology, the first 2-disc compilation was released, containing two new tracks. The US release features a new version of "When You're Gone", a duet with Melanie C. Also in 2005, Adams re-recorded the theme song for the second season of Pamela's Fox sitcom Stacked. In 2006, Adams wrote and performed the theme song "Never Let Go" which was featured in the closing credits of the film The Guardian starring Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher. Adams also co-wrote the song "Never Gonna Break My Faith" for the film Bobby. The song was performed by the R&B singers Aretha Franklin and Mary J. Blige and earned him a Golden Globe Nomination in 2007.[33] Adams released his eleventh album internationally on 17 March 2008. It was appropriately called 11. The album was released in the US exclusively at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club retail stores on 13 May 2008.[34] The first single released from the album was "I Thought I'd Seen Everything". Adams did an 11-day, 11-country European acoustic promotional tour to kick off the release of the album.[35] The album debuted at number one in Canada (making it his first album to reach that position since Waking Up the Neighbours in 1991) as well as reaching number two in Germany. In the United States, the album charted at number 80.[11] In May 2009, Bryan Adams announced on his Twitter account that he has started writing and recording a new album in Paris. The song was called "Bang the Drum" and was co-written with Jim Vallance for the opening ceremony for the 2010 Winter Olympics Games in Vancouver, British Columbia. The ceremony was held indoors at BC Place Stadium. Adams performed at a party that Wayne Gretzky and Jaromír Jágr attended during Olympics, this brought all three together once again, following Gretzky's final game in 1999 at Madison Square Garden, when Gretzky then played for the New York Rangers and Jagr was with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Adams then sang the Canadian national anthem and ad-libbed a line to acknowledge Gretzky's departure, singing, "We're gonna miss you Wayne Gretzky." Adams was one of several well-known Canadian musicians to visit Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper at his official residence. Originally the visit was meant to be Adams's plea to the Prime Minister to change the archaic copyright laws,[39] instead Harper turned it into a photo op for himself and an informal "jam session".[40] In November 2010, Adams released the acoustic album Bare Bones. It was recorded live at various locations on his "Bare Bones Tour" earlier in the year. The Dow jumped 128.66 (0.82 percent) to 15,746.88, busting a previous record from October 29. The broad-based S&P 500 also closed 7.52 (0.43 percent) higher at 1,770.49, narrowly missing another record, but the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index fell 7.92 (0.20 percent) to 3,931.95. Electric-car company Tesla, which has risen more than four-fold in 2013, fell 14.5 percent after the company missed profit and revenue expectations. But the poor Tesla report turned sentiment against a number of other companies like Facebook (-2.0 percent), Netflix (-1.7 percent) and Priceline (-2.2 percent) that have surged in recent months. "Money is leaving the Nasdaq and it's going into cyclical, industrial stocks," said Michael James, managing director of equity trading at Wedbush Securities. Not all Nasdaq components fell. eBay rose 4.3 percent, while Google edged 0.1 percent higher. The biggest winner in the Dow was Microsoft -- also a Nasdaq stock -- which jumped 4.2 percent following a report the company has narrowed its short-list of possible chief executives and is considering Ford chief Alan Mulally for the top spot. Other big blue-chip gains came from General Electric (+1.8 percent), UnitedHealth Group (+2.3 percent) and oil companies Chevron (+2.3 percent) and ExxonMobil (+1.3 percent). Clothing company Ralph Lauren rose 4.3 percent rose 5.5 percent after earnings bested analyst expectations by 3 cents at $2.23 per share. The company also boosted its revenue forecast. Oil and gas company Chesapeake Energy fell 6.8 percent on a weak production outlook. Deutsche Bank said the forecast implied a sequential decline in output of oil. Bond prices were mixed. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury slipped to 2.64 percent from 2.66 percent Tuesday, while the 30-year rose to 3.77 percent from 3.76 percent.
