This week brings up several fun holidays to celebrate. Among the favorite are: sneak some Zucchini onto your neighbor's porch day, s'mores day, kool-aid day and sandcastle day. Join with us as we learn to embrace and celebrate wacky holidays in August. August 8 The Date to Create- This is your day to reach out and be creative! Brainstorm with your family and friends something everyone can do together whether it's making a card for a neighbor who is going through a tough time or creating a family scrapbook. Happiness Happens Day- This day was established to remind people that happiness happens when you least expect it. Be sure to find lots of reasons to smile today! Odie Day- Today marks the day of Odie's birth. In case you don't remember, Odie is Garfield's dog who started to appear in the comic strip in 1978. Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day- What else are you going to do with all the extra zucchini from your garden? While there are many recipes ranging from soups and stews to breads and dip for zucchini, there is still plenty to share! Assistance Dog Day- This day has been set aside to recognize all the animals that assist humans in going about their everyday activities. Why don't you celebrate Assistance Dog Day by giving your dog an extra treat? August 9 Veep Day- Veep Day recognizes the day when Nixon's resignation let Ford succeed the presidency. This occurred in 1974. August 10 National Duran Duran Appreciation Day- Why this day has been decided to be National Duran Duran Appreciation Day remains a mystery and even Entertainment Weekly doesn't recognize it as a holiday. But that shouldn't stop the true Duran Duran fans from celebrating and taking the day off! National S'mores Day- S'mores are delicious on any day, but this is a great reason to eat them. S'mores day is to celebrate and enjoy this yummy, gooey, sticky treat. So, start up a campfire and enjoy! National Lazy Day- Now this is a holiday I can get on board with! National lazy day is meant to enjoy a nice lazy day or doing nothing at all. Makes me want to enjoy the lazy river! August 11 Ingersoll Day- Ingersoll Day celebrates the birth of Robert Green Ingersoll. Many think of him as one of America's most popular free thinkers. President's Joke Day- Several people think this is a day to make jokes about the president which is incorrect. President's Joke Day is a day where the Presidents make a joke. August 12 International Youth Day- International Youth Day was established in December 2009 to celebrate young people's energy, imagination and initiatives. This is a way to engage youth to make positive contributions to their communities. Sewing Machine Day- The first sewing machines were made in France in the 1830's. People who know who to sew how coming few and far between us, while those who actually own a sewing machine are even more uncommon. Sewing Machine Day is designed to be a day where we can remember the importance of this invention. Vinyl Record Day- On this date in 1877 is the day Edison invented the phonograph. It is only fitting that this day is also recognized as the Vinyl Record Day. August 13 Blame Someone Else Day- Think of all the mistakes and poor decision you've made and who you would like to blame them on. Blame Someone Else Day is to day for this. Don't worry any longer about those things and simply blame someone else. This day is celebrated the first Friday the thirteenth of the year. International Lefthander's Day- This day was first observed August 13, 1976. It is meant to promote awareness of the inconvenience left-handers in a world made up of mostly right-handers. Left-handers make up 7-10% of the world's population. Kool-Aid Day- Kool-Aid day has been celebrated since 1994 after it was first celebrated in Hastings, NE. So, grab a packet or two when you are at the store next, mix it up and enjoy! August 14 National Garage Sale Day- Going garage sale hunting is one of the best ways to get some needed things for the house. It's also an amazing way to get kid's clothes and toys for cheap. To celebrate national garage sale day, you should either go out and enjoy them or host your own. National Navajo Code Talkers Day- This day was proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1982. Sandcastle and Sculpture Day- While the date for sandcastle and sculpture day varies through the mid August dates, we definitely know the intent behind the celebration is to enjoy the fu of building a sandcastle.
