Subject: Since it is the off-season, I thought it would be fun to discuss our program's storied history. I think we would all agree that the 1942 Sugar Bowl stands as the football Rams' most significant win ever. But what is our most significant regular season victory? I think the following merit consideration.

November 9, 1929 @ Chestnut Hill,MA
Fordham 7, Boston College 6. After two consecutive ties, the Rams, under legendary coach Frank Cavanaugh, get back on track with a win over Cavanaugh's former team in a tightly fought contest. The Rams win their next two games and finish 7-0-2, earning the title of national champions in the Sorenson historical ranking service.

November 19, 1932 @ Polo Grounds, NY
Fordham 8, Oregon State 6. The Rams finish 6-2 by coming from behind in Cavanaugh's last game to score the win over a highly ranked Western opponent. Fordham becomes the first Eastern team to win two games over Western opponents in the same season, having defeated St. Mary's earlier in the season. The drama of the game was heightened by the fact it was an open secret that it would be Cavanaugh's last game, due to his failing health.

October 28, 1933 @ Polo Grounds, New York
Fordham 2, Alabama 0. Sophomore tackle Amerino Sarno blocks a punt that bounces out of the Crimson Tide's endzone for a safety and the margin of victory. The play foreshadows Alex Santilli's blocked punt in the 1942 Sugar Bowl that also rolls through the endzone for a 2-0 win. The Rams finish 6-2 in Jim Crowley's first season.

November 28, 1935 at Yankee Stadium, New York
Fordham 21, NYU 0. NYU enters the annual Thanksgiving Day game undefeated, and looking to have its ticket punched for the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day. But the Rams manhandle their arch-rivals, and the Violets go home without the bowl bid. Unfortunately, Fordham will find itself in the same position a year later, only to be shocked by NYU, 7-6, in a game Lombardi later called the most bitter defeat he ever suffered.

November 20, 1937 @ Polo Grounds
Fordham 6, St. Mary's 0. Fordham shuts out its highly touted Western rival, and after an easy win over NYU the next week, finishes 7-0-1 and No. 3 in the AP poll.

October 28, 1939 @ Polo Grounds, NY
Fordham 27, Pitt 13
Fordham and Pitt, the best teams in the East throughout the 1930s, started an annual series in 1935. The first three games were played to 0-0 ties. In 1938, Pitt won at Pitt. So this win over Pitt represents the Rams' first win in the historic series.

Thank you, Joe. Your posting efforts are well appreciated. It makes one think of how it once was and how it might once again be someday. Check out the following site for some more Fordham games from the glory years. http://www.jhowell.net/cf/scores/Fordham.htm#1949 (NT)Ram It '6616:46:04 04/13/05 Wed

Good stuff, Joe! (NT)PA Ram11:32:50 04/14/05 Thu

Interesting stuff. I think that the Rams' greatest victory is still considered to be the one over a great Tennessee team circa 1933. All of these games were before my time except the '39 game vs. Pitt. I was all of seven at the time but what I remember is that in the 4th Q Pitt was on our two ready to go in for the tying score. We made them fumble and Vince Dennery picked it up and ran it back 98 yds for a score. Incidentally, the NY Giants have an annual scholarship given out in Denerry's name. Joe, thanks for this. Great stuff. Our football history is so damned impressive. (NT)Rambacker17:38:00 04/14/05 Thu

I believe our greatest win in post WWII was over the Univ. Of San Francisco in "51...21-14. This was a team with 3 future NFL HOFers- Matson, St. Clair & Marchetti plus an all NFL guard, Stanfel. 3 or 4 others made it to the NFL. USF led 14-0 at the half. We scored when Doheny threw an outlet pass to Larry Higgins who rumbled 95 yds. We caught fire and won over what was clearly a better team. Matson did play the 2d half with a bum leg.
