In reply to: JCC 's message, "New Facilities Needed" on 21:47:51 12/21/04 Tue

In my vision of a totally rebuilt north side of campus, we would have a fully-integrated complex that includes new facilities for basketball (6K seats?) and football (10-12K seats?). I'm sorry I didn't spell that out specifically but I thought it was covered by the athletic facilities remark.

For logistical reasons the whole complex would have to be built in pieces (unless we just shut Fordham down for two years, which of course isn't going to happen). That doesn't mean we would build one piece and stop, or scale things back like they did in the 70's (but budget concerns are real, which is why a longer fundraising time frame is more realistic). The more money the alumni can raise for this complex, the less chance it will be compromised later to cut costs and meet reduced budgets.

When I said "lead with" with the fitness/rec center/student center portions of the facility, I meant as the main selling point in the discussion to get enthusiastic buy-in (rather than the football stadium idea, for example) from the general student body. I'd rather see this pitched to the university community as a perk for everyone, rather than as a perk mostly for the athletes. We kid only ourselves when we say Fordham must have a new stadium when we're only getting on average 4-5K for the 7K existing one. Or that the RHG is what has held us back when everyone knows its more complicated than that (i.e. jump from PL to A10, coaching turnover, questionable recruits, etc.). Think like a coalition-builder rather than just a sports fanatic on a mission.

Leading with a recreation center as phase 1 isn't a good idea. Leading with a new Campus Center(already a given) coupled with a convocations center with complementary multiple functions serving students/alums/faculty is sound strategy. A well-conceived convocations center serving the entire university is a logical next step for Fordham after a Science Center is planned. By the way, I'm glad you've embraced my original premise from 2 years ago that an integrated capital project including a new Campus Center, Convocations Center, Recreation Complex & Football Stadium is the way to go.
