Jesus loves me? It would mean much more to me to know that he stands foursquare in defense of our precious Bill of Rights. For that matter it would be greatly reassuring to hear ANYONE in our group speak out boldly in defense of our Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms. And not just generally but explicitly and displaying a complete willingness to welcome challenges with thoughtful and patience responses. There have been several times where a ringing endorsement of our rights has been followed by a deafening silence. It puzzles me why there seems to be a reluctance to reaffirm confidently and clearly what we all pledged our honor to stand for. The only explanation that seems likely to me is that many are simply ignorant of what those words mean and have never taught themselves enough about our founding principles to feel confident to speak about them. We should never shy away from discussing these vital ideas and we certainly should never be embarrassed to do so. To the extent we are unable to hold our own in such a discussion the meaning and power of our oath is diminished. If we can't describe what rights we are defending we risk losing those rights. How would we even recognize when they are being eroded?

We all swore to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic" and we swore also that we would "bear true faith and allegiance to the same". I feel bound by that oath and have spent my life in training to improve my ability to discover exactly what that means I must do. I am not one to espouse platitudes or empty rhetoric. Anyone may demand of me a clear and thorough explanation of my position at any time and be confident it will be forthcoming. I could not hold my head high and look anyone in the eye if I offered less. How would any of us fare if we found ourselves in conversation with any of our founding fathers. Would they be pleased that we have honored their genius or would they shrug and walk away in disgust?

Can I get an "Amen!"?

Ken
