I got this poem from a guy at a truck stop. The auther is unknown.

    IT IS THE SOLDIER, NOT THE REPORTER, WHO HAS GIVEN US THE FREEDOM OF THE PRESS;

    IT IS THE SOILDIER, NOT THE POET, WHO HAS GIVEN US FREEDOM OF SPEECH;

    IT IS THE SOLDIER, NOT THE CAMPUS ORGANIZER, WHO HAS GIVEN US THE FREEDOM TO DEMONSTRATE;

    IT IS THE SOLDIER, NOT THE LAWYER, WHO HAS GIVEN US THE RIGHT TO A FAIR TRIAL;

IT IS THE SOLDIER WHO SALUTES THE FLAG, WHO SERVES UNDER THE FLAG, AND WHOSE CORPSE IS DRAPED BY THE FLAG, WHO ALLOWS THE PROTESTER TO BURN THE FLAG.

FOR THOSE WHO FOUGHT FOR IT FREEDOM IS SOMTHING THE PRETECTED WILL NEVER KNOW!

I feel we should allow any of the QCs and White Mice that are living here in our country to become a member of the VSPA.
These fellows worked alongside us in Nam and shared the same dangers we did.
They also were there to back us up in the event of a problem as many of us had them working alongside us .

I understand there are many that are living here in the States now.
They apparently have their own organization but I am sure they would like to be a part of ours as we all were doing the same job for the same reasons and we did rely on each other at times.

In reference to my posts I have gotten responses from both Positive about inviting any QCs to any of our reunions large or small and negative reponses from others about it.
I understand the feelings of both sides VSPA members as well as the QC members of their organization about allowing each other to join the repective organizations.
It seems better to keep it the way and just invite each other to attend their reunions etc as guests.
I thought it would be a nice warming gesture to have anyone of them attend our reunion and I did not know what may have been the policy in the past as I am new to the VSPA.

I of course appreciate the contact information that Dennis has given me and after speaking with those that are helping me run this mini reunion we will go from there as I do not wish to upset an apple cart.
I have had alot of contact working with the QCs in Pleiku when I was there as I worked in the Law Enforcement section and not Security so I had daily contact working with the QCs. At Phan Rang when I was stationed there like Sam Lewis etc worked Security and did not have much contact with the QCs.
Yes we all were comrades over there and we all were working for the same goal.

I will look forward to a possible invitaion to one of the QC get togethers in my area of Virginia if ever asked to attend I will try my best to attend.

Note to all those attending the first mini reunion in Roanoke Virginia in August .
Friday night after evryone arrives we will meet in the Lobby about 7PM and head out for dinner at one of the local restaurants.
Saturday upon getting up and having Breakfast from the extensive hot and cold menu they have we will leave between 0930 and 1000 hrs to go to the National DDay memorial site for a prearanged tour.
After the tour we will go to the Peaks of Otter Lodge for Lunch. (The lodge is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway overlooking a scenic lake and of course the mountains.) We will then travel back along the Blue Ridge Parkway stopping at several overlook vistas where you can take pictures etc of the beauty of the area.
We will head to Mill Mountain which overlooks the Roanoke Valley and from there you can have people see you on their computers as there is a Web Camera set up on the overlook so bring your cell phones and give your friends and family a call back home>
If we have time we can stop in the Old section of Roanoke where it has been restored with a Farmers market many outside restaurants etc.
Saturday night we will have a get together for just relaxing in the Hospitality room at the hotel and we can order up Pizzas etc and just hang out and talk . If anyone has pictures or slides etc. they want to bring for the group to see or if someone wishes to give a presentation that will be great.
We may still have someone I know that may be willing to come and give us a presentation if I can twist the arm more.

Note- This reunion will only be attended by VSPA members and their families except for the speaker who I may have comming- The two people I have in mind are both retired USAF Colonels that flew in Vietnam the years many of us were there.

Looking forward to this reunion and meeting everyone.

As many of you on my e-mail list know already...we have lost Phil Lange.

His son Paul Lange informed me yesterday morning that Phil had passed away peacefully in his New Hampshire home on Tuesday night at 7PM, after a 6 month battle with cancer.

Please keep the Lange family in your thoughts and prayers...as his wife of many years is undergoing treatment for the same dreaded disease.

Phil has been a member of the VSPA since 1999, and a life member for many years. He was my NCOIC at Nha Trang on A Flight LE, as well as members Harry Bevan and Bruce Thompson{and I may have missed some others who were in LE at Nha Trang, and I know some of the Security guys remember him as well}. A small band of us from Nha Trang have kept in contact these past few years since we met up on this very bullentin board. It was an honor to serve with these guys 40 years ago.

Phil served with the 14th SPS from December 1968 through early December 1969...he returned home, retired after a long Air Force career, then began a second long career teaching college in his beloved New Hampshire.

You will be missed Phil, may God's speed be with you on your final journey.

    Dear, dear VSPA friends,

I know that I can always count on you, whether it is during times of great joy or sorrow. Do you know what a gift that is for me? I am blessed. I am happy to report that my 87 year old mother came through her colon surgery with flying colors. I was with her last week in Fargo, and left Sunday evening when two of my brothers arrived. She went "home" yesterday, although she will need to reside in the nursing home for awhile until such time that she is healed and can take care of herself at home. I will be with her again in early July. She is such a gentle soul, a bright spirit and everyone who meets her just loves her. I think it's safe to say that she was the darling of the surgery floor with all the nurses and doctors. Thank you, everyone, for your thoughts, prayers and support. I am so appreciative, and I look forward to thanking you in person at the Reunion this October here in Phoenix. Since we live here, many of you will meet my husband for the first time! Yes, he really DOES exist! Thanks again! Erlyce

Well. a few months ago, I sent in to be added to vets in the VA. I went and got my physical and told the PA that I was hard of hearing. It was only about two weeks later that I was given a hearing test and just today I received my hearing aids. I asked the hearing dude what my cost would be as I have private insurance and he told me that I would only pay for an office visit like my civilian doc. Then today,he told me that I would be getting a 6 month supply of batteries with a refill card. Does that sound right to the rest of you and if so, then for all of you out there who have private insurance, go ahead and sign up for the VA as my private insurance would not pay for hearing aids. I am now just waiting for my appointment to get my AO test. So. if you have not signed up for anything with the VA, sign up and get an AO test.

God Bless all of you, God Bless VSPA and God Bless America.

My mom had emergency surgery on Monday morning in Fargo, ND. The doctors removed a six to eight inch piece of her colon. Various family members are sitting with her....I flew in here Wed. night and will go home Sunday afternoon; another brother and his wife will be coming from Missouri to be with her. Additionally, she has an eye that is deteriorating (a failed cornea transplant from many years ago), and will probably need to have that removed. So she's facing some difficult things at age 87. However, as is typical for her, she is failingly cheerful and good-natured, and is a joy to be around. I ask you to keep her in your thoughts......Erlyce

We both had friends that died there and the tears flowed and flowed. I read every name that was on the wall and prayed to God for all their souls and that none of them died in vain. I know for sure that we are going to DC to see the big wall. We will save our pennies and travel there as soon as possible.

I went to the VA Hospital in East Haven, CT for my physical and the experience was fantastic. Everyone, I mean everyone(including vets), were extremely helpful since that was my first trip there. After all the bad rap the VA got in the past, I was really impressed with this hospital.
I since received my rating from them and was satisfied with the result. If I ever have to go back to that hospital, I will without reservation. Again, I want to thank all of you that responded to my inquiry and offered your help.

The average age for a WW2 soldier was middle to late twenties. The average age for a soldier in Vietnam was by some sources 19.5 years of age. There is an emotional toll paid by all soldiers in a combat zone. The age of the soldier also determines the emotional toll he pays when the soldier is much younger: I dedicated this poem to John Burnham after reading his book DogTags of Courage.

    Teenage Soldier
    Teenage soldier trains for war.
    Teenage soldier out the door.
    Teenage soldier says goodbye.
    Teenage soldier sees them sigh.
    Teenage soldier boards the plane.
    Teenage soldier never the same.
    Teenage soldier Nam-ward bound.
Teenage soldier's plane touches the ground.
    Teenage soldier far from home.
    Teenage soldier's thoughts do roam.
    Teenage soldier going home last.
    Teenage soldier must learn fast.
    Teenage soldier does his part.
    Teenage soldier broken heart.
    Teenage soldier says goodbye.
    Teenage soldier sees them sigh.
    Teenage soldier goes back home.
    Teenage soldier's thoughts do roam...
**If you were a teenage soldier at war in the A.F you were a volunteer and had a lot put on your plate for a young person. Well done and welcome Home**

Happy Father's Day to you all. Jack

I lost my Father in 1990.
He was a proud American Navy veteran.
He flew B24's during World War II
I wrote this shortly after his death.
I have missed him everyday since.

    MY FATHER

Tis with a sad heart I take up pen
To write about the life of one man
A simple person, self taught in life
From birth till death his was that of strife
Born of farmers and workers not set with wealth
Blessed with love and happiness till failing health
A man who believed life was worth it all
He worked, he played, sometimes stumbled but never to fall
As a man boy so young he went off to war
Till his death he wore scars from 1944
This man so tall and so proud was a giant to me
Teaching, loving, showing the way with rides on his knee
He led me down the path of faith and what is right
He comforted me when the fear came from dark of night
With loving hands gentle but firm so strong
I learned to follow the road that lead to do no wrong
He's gone now to that heavenly reward he won
If I could but be half the man he was
Then I know that heavenly reward waits for me
When we can be together once more
    On God's great beautiful shore

Can anyone out there refresh my memory ref. an Incident that happened at DaNang ? My Unit(4503rd TFS, was TDY to DaNang from Bien Hoa in early 1966,late one evening( maybe even 0100 or later) we were on patrol near the Mud Flats and hooked up with some Marines and were sharing some hot coffee..all of a sudden there was one hell of an explosion that rocked our world..I seem to remember that an Aircraft (maybe a B-52???) crash landed either on take off or maybe upon landing(I just don't know)..for some reason I keep remembering small portions of this Incident but the full Incident just escapes me. I do remember that we took some incoming small arms fire and returned it, but only for a few minutes that evening. I also seem to recall that we heard that 500 Lb Bombs onboard cooked off... Was anyone at DaNang then and remember that?
Thats about all I remember but if you remember it tell me I was'nt dreaming

Guys: This is written for all veterans from all wars Jack The Old Cowboy Poet

    If I Get Lost

If I get lost I am sorry its not my fault
Some days I slip back to a painful time
Too days when in a battle I had fought
Fighting those old feelings in my mind

If I get lost look for me I am still here
Just remembering what happened in the past
Needing someone to hold and just be near
Gone but for a little while it will not last

If I get lost please reach for my hand
That simple touch becomes the start
For veterans who served this proud land
Who still stand for the flag and cover their hearts

If I get lost know I am not alone
Others fight the very same dreams
About all those different war zones
Where nothing is what it seems

If I get lost feel no shame for me
Though me head be hidden by a dark hood
Look past my weakest hours to really see
That I just need to be understood

How many of you remember the grenade launcher used with the M1/M2 .30 Carbine? If I recall, it could launch a pineapple-fragmentation grenade out to about 200 yds. It consisted of a metal apparatus in which the grenade was placed with the spoon held down. This was then placed over the muzzle of the carbine and the pin removed. A blank round was then placed in the chamber. The carry strap of the carbine was marked in increments out to 200 yards. The grenadier would use the kneeling position with his foot on the required yardage. Windage was a matter of guess work. Overall it was a pretty good system, but no where near what the 40 mm could do.

I had a great experience Tuesday on the way back from Chicago; I’m almost too humbled by it to share. As Linda and I made our way to our departure gate at Midway, Chicago we both needed to take a restroom break. We decided to meet at the gate. While waiting for her and standing in the Southwest Airlines boarding line the gate agent made the following announcement, “Are there any active military personal in line?” No one answered. Then he asked, “Do we have any military veterans with us?” I raised my hand. He said. “Sir, we want you to be the first to board.” That’s a big thing when you fly SWA. Then he said to the crowd, “Let’s give our veteran a round of applause.” It nearly brought me to tears. Once Linda and I choose our seats the flight attendant came down the aisle, she put her hand on my shoulder and said, “Thank you for your service to our country.” Tears rolled at that point, not many, just a few. When it came time for cocktail service and I tried to pay, the attendant said she would take care of it. Later she did the same thing. I was overwhelmed by the niceness of the way SWA and their employees treated me. It was truly a great experience.

They were made of a green water-resistant, canvas-like material and had a foldover closure with a snap. They came with two pouches sewn together and could be threaded on the web belt. Some chose to wear them upside down for quicker access to the magazine. I don't think they were government issue. Probably made locally by the VN for GI use. I forgot to mention that these pouches would only hold the 20 round magazine. Comments?

  • VVA statement on new Agent Orange effects study -- Phil Carroll - LM #336, Tue, Jun 09 2009, 9:39:35 PDT (dd.fws.gov/164.159.60.2)
Vietnam Veterans of America: Crying Need to Deal with Agent Orange Problems Here in America

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – “Vietnam Veterans of America applauds the conclusions and recommendations of a Ford Foundation-funded report issued today by the National Organization on Disabilities on the effects of Agent Orange in Vietnam,” said John Rowan, VVA National President. “While VVA feels compassion for the many adults and children injured and made ill by exposure to Agent Orange and the many other toxins used in Vietnam during the war there, it is now time to fully deal with the same effects on Americans who served in Vietnam and other areas that were also contaminated. The effects of these toxins on the children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren must similarly be addressed.”

The U.S. government currently is not studying the possible intergenerational effects of exposure to Agent Orange, nor are they doing any morbidity studies at the Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or anywhere else.

Rowan called for “the immediate de-classification of all Department of Defense information that pertains to exposure of U.S. military servicemembers to any toxin at any time, to include the Vietnam Era” and to take immediate steps to begin epidemiological studies, birth defects registries, and outreach necessary to scientifically document the problems suffered by our veterans and their offspring.

“Dow Chemical is not going to fund these studies,” Rowan said. “Only the U.S. government can reasonably be expected to fund this vital research, and they have not been doing their job. In fact, it would appear that for the last decade that our government has been doing everything possible to prevent such studies from being done.

“That the Administration is adding another $3 million to the $3 million already pledged from the Ford Foundation for work to help those suffering in Vietnam is fine and good,” Rowan said. “However, there needs to be at least a commensurate commitment by the U.S. government and the Ford Foundation to American veterans and their families. Under a new President, now is the time for a dramatic change of direction for our country. Similarly, now is the time for a new direction from the Ford Foundation.”

At breakfast the other day the conversation turned to TV programming and commercials and programming and commercials.
Re commercials: sometimes you don't even know what they're selling, yet sometimes they are funny or entertaining. It was also suggested that some were better than the programs they sponsored. Maybe it's come full circle where the programs are interrupting the commercials--LOL.
Re programming: It was our opinion that TV programming is at an all time low. Some nights we have to go through all the channels 2 or 3 times to find something barely tolerable to watch.

Was talking with Kevin Forester last night and he brought up a room mate of his at Westover AFB in 1966. He said he was sure he went to the Nam same time as us but couldn't recall what base. He said his first name was Skip but could have been a nic name he couldn't remember. He hailed from some place in Minnisota. He would have been in the Nam from 67 to 68 maybe 69. Last name of Marsden (sp?) first name or nic name of Skip. Anyone have any info let me know. He and Kevin were pretty good friends back then!

I believe it is very commendable to honor our brother veterans who participated in the invasion of Europe during D-Day on the opening page of our web site. Don, it was very honorable and caring to do that. I salute you.

My son, John, and his wife, who are stationed at Spangdalhem, Germany, were at Normandy this weekend for the 65th anniversary. My wife and I, with our daughter, were there five years ago for the 60th. It was a very moving experience. I had two uncles who were there 65 yrs ago and they were both fortunate to have lived through the whole WWII experience.

    Inward Battles

Many years we have been back from that horrible place
No jungle around us now but the battles still rage
Drifting back again through time and space
Just wanting to close this books final page

Sitting alone with only memories best forgotten
The aching pain that never gives us rest
In the backs of our minds echoing like in a canyon
Throwing us back into our endless quest

The seeking of relief from the worst of times
Only wanting to live in comfort with out pain
Walking , while others not knowing how thin a line
Sometimes wondering how long we might remain sane

Not just the scars of war do we carry
But mournful wounds that will never heal
As we join together when a fallen brother is buried
Knowing the pain that others can not feel

Veteran’s are a special breed of people
The only ones who say I will die for you
Our lives open to death and are so brindle
They should be honored these surviving few

We all need to take the time and listen
For so many of us have something to say
If we speak we are trying to get past our gremlin’s
For soon we will all be gone someday

I am supposed to help escort one of the survivor of the D-Day invasion to Memorial for the 65th Anniversary tomorrow but had to make an emergency trip home to NC. Sad to say one of my dearest friend's only daughter, a beautiful young lady who was to graduate from HS next week was killed in a car accident on her way to capping ceremonies. She was a very popular student , cheerleader , National Honor Society, among other things. The parents, fellow students, and community as a whole are devistated by this . Visitation at my hometown church was supposed to be from 6 till 9 last night but went on till well after midnight . The preciuus family greeted every friend who came throug the line.

Seems she was 3/4 of a mile from home in her mother's SUV with her brother headed to a Capping Ceremony at the High School. Her mother and stepdad were directly behind her in another car and witnessed the tragedy. She ANSWERED A damn Cell Phone while driving ,as she did it slipped between the seat and the door , she looked down , reached for the phone , ran off the shoulder of the road , overcorrected , and skidded causing the car to flip 3 times throwing her out through the windshield striking a tree on the back of her head. . She regretfully wasnt wearing a seatbelt because of this time she wanted everything perfect and didnt want to wrinkle her dress . Her brother who was had only scatches. Such a hard lesson for all the kids who knew and loved her.

The funeral was today . Please pray for this dear family as they go about burying this precious child who I have loved like my own since birth,

    Thks, sam

    Hello dear friends,

It has been awhile since I have had time to visit the site.
Since I saw many of you at the last reunion, I have gotten my motorcycle license and a Honda Shadow Aero with a 750 engine. I got tired on sitting on the back of Jaime's Harley. It gives a whole new meaning to "Drive On!" I am a beginning rider so I am being vigilant and careful. I can just imagine the day when one of my soldiers sees me driving the bike and says, "OMG that's my therapist!!"

You all have been on my mind. The last few days have been filled with emotion and healing. Jaime's dad, who is retired army and a two tour Vietnam veteran, was here visiting. As he lives near Camp Lejeune, NC he doesn't see much army stuff anymore, so Jaime took him to a local army surplus store. The experience brought back many memories for him. There was a man at the store with a 1st Cav Div hat on. Jaime Sr. mentioned to him he had served with 1st Cav in Vietnam. Jaime's dad reached out to shake the man's hand and he presented a prosthetic arm. The man laughed and said, "This is my souvenir. Welcome home brother." Jaime Sr. was overcome with emotion as no one had ever welcomed him home before. I have heard ya'll say it a hundred times. We also visited the 1st Cav museum on Ft. Hood and spent hours talking about his experiences in Vietnam. It was a time for healing as he 'let it out and let go'. It is a reminder that we can talk it out, act it out or have symptoms. Talking is our best option.

I look forward to seeing everyone in Phoenix.

    Warm regards
    Kim Bayes-Bautista

I know this day is on many of our minds as we are reminded of the incretible sacrifice and loss of life during the invasion of Normandy. I have read many accounts of this day and the heroic's that were displayed.

Lest we never forget their sacrifice as we honor the memory of those who perished and the living who carry the injuries and memories of that day.

  • An Old Poem by an Old Poet. -- Jackie R. Kays, Sun, May 31 2009, 19:23:07 PDT (customer121_171.grm.net/216.139.121.171)
    The Blue Knights of DaNang

    The Knights stood tall...
protecting those mighty war birds and
the men that kept them flying high.
    They stood tall…
in the hot sun and the monsoon rains that
often fell from the dark Asian sky.

    They stood tall…
in the dark, near the perimeter wire, waiting...
waiting with their weapon ready to fire.

    They stood tall...
night after night on the black tarmac,
lit only by a floating pop flare's light.

    They stood tall…
    waiting for that hostile call...
    "V.C. on the fence!" or
    "Charlie in the wire!"

    They stood tall…
    professional sentinels one and all.
    They stood tall...
ready and waiting for that ominous call.

    They stood tall…
representing the bright torch of freedom
    that protects us all.

    They stood tall…
    with distinction and valor.
    They were there...
    they answered the call.

    So here and now…
    I stand at attention and
    salute those mighty Blue Knights,
    one and all.
