  • Golf Tournament at Reunion -- Newell M. Swartz, Sat, Sep 26 2009, 20:35:20 PDT (75-167-47-75.phnx.qwest.net/75.167.47.75)
For any of you guys who have procastinated between walking thru the museum or cooling your heels at the hotel, the alternative is the golf tournament. You don't have to be good. According to the rules, all four men on the team hit the ball. The best ball is the only one played out of the four so nobody gets left behind. All four guys then hit a ball from where the best one landed the first time. The best shot of the next four gets played again so how can you lose? (All four members suck is how) (LOL). I did not originally sign up for golf but after talking to Mike and Jerry Haupt, out coordinator at Luke AFB, this is going to be one of the most fun events the VSPA has ever put on. It don't matter if you can't walk more than ten feet, we have carts. If you are on my team, I will even loan you my clubs. Assuming you can swing a Chi Chi Rodriguez wooden club from the sixties. Free golf balls are included in the price. Just wear soft sole shoes of any kind and you are there. If you still want to sign up contact Mike Douglas or Erlyes Peckas. You can pay at the registration desk when you check in. Don't sign up if it hurts you to laugh too much because some of us will be funny swinging a club for the first time in forty years. Newell _

Today is the 4th Anniversary of the first KIA in the war in Iraq. A1C Elizabeth "Liz" Jacobs was killed when the vehicle she was in was hit with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED)

Eagle Chapter, AFSFA, has set up an on-line Memorial for Liz at http://elizabeth-jacobson.last-memories.com/index.php?co=candles&poz=0 . Drop by and pay your respects for a young warrior, who was cheated out of the opportunity to experience marriage, children, grandkids and growing old.

Sorry to report that I have to cancel our plans for the reunion in Phoenix. Saw my Dr today in reference to some recent medical problems and he referred me to a specialist.
Have an appointment next Friday with the specialist to get his opinion. May require surgery and may not so did not want the trip to interfer with my health problems. Terrible how thing quickly go down hill when you get older.
Here's wishing everyone a sucessful reunion (which I am sure will not be a problem). Just would like to get a few picture of the Memorial Service if possible. Sory I will miss meeting Kim's husband this year. Good luck to all and have a safe trip. Your comrade, Bud Owens

I attended the Safeside Reunion at Valdosta, GA last week at the gracious invitation of Chief Jerry Nelson. I had a wonderful time meeting "Old Friends I never knew". Everyone made me feel very welcome, and we shared a few war stories that sounded much the same on both sides of the fence.

I can't say enough good things about Col. Derry and the fine young men & women of the 820th Security Forces at Moody AFB. They did everything possible to entertain us and make us feel welcome. They even included the Members of Safeside in a memorial ceremony for one of their fallen members.

I just want to thank Jerry and all of the members of Safeside, and their wives, who went so far out of their way to make me fell welcome.

Sadly, I report the death of one of Safeside's finest. Lt Col (Ret) Claude P. "Red" Guran was killed Tuesday, Sep 22, in a traffic accident in Oklahoma. Red was returning to his home in Rio Rancho, NM, from the Safeside Reunion in Valdosta, GA. Red was a member of the 1041st Security Police Sq (T), the original Safeside Squadron and served at Phu Cat.

On Monday morning, as my wife and I were getting ready to leave Valdosta, I shook Red's hand and wished him a safe journey. We were practically neighbors when I lived in Taylor Ranch (West Albuquerque).

Please keep Red and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Just read the haunting account of James B. Jones [http://www.war-stories.com/t_jbj-dn-poss-1966-1.asp], who died in 1966, the year I graduated from high school. I am a newspaper reporter and yesterday spoke to a Marine veteran suffering with PTSD. I noticed Jones was from Alexandria Bay, N.Y. When I was in the Army Reserves and posted to Camp Drum in Watertown in the early 1970s for summer training, a group of us made excursions to Alexandria Bay to drink and meet girls. It never crossed my mind that in that lovely setting resided a family which lost so much in the war. God bless them. God bless us all.

    Hi Guys!

It’s almost witching time and I’m still seating here at my humble desk.
I just finished reading (again) Don Poss; “Catch the Wind…The last Vietnam Veteran.”
If you have not read this article by Don, I strongly recommend that you do so!
I am proud to admit that it brought tears to these aging eyes! (Call me sentimental

I might add that I am also proud to call Don a personal friend of mine.
He is one of the most versatile and articulate persons that I’ve had the pleasure

I guess I just don't find myself totally in agreement. We all fought in a war. The war was unpopular at home and we were not given the recognition we deserved as well as those who fought, died and are still being held captive. I have always been proud of my service at home and abroad and over the years have found many friends who are Vietnamese. These people either were born after the war or fought in that war against the same enemy we did. I have been able to make some very close friends of former QC's and have attended and spoke at their reunions and conferences. Steve Gattis and myself attended one just a few weeks ago. These people welcomed us as heroes. They cannot thank you enough and will upon meeting you, no matter the rank, salute us. They are now productive American citizens who feel so greatful for our service and that they have had the opportuinity for the American Dream. This last reunion I attended, there were QC's there that had spent 10-15 years as POW's. Our government turned its back on what once was an ally. When they needed help and to be supplied, President Ford refused, leaving them to fight now an enemy who had the support of China and Russia. Our Government, presented the defeat to those who fought for the security of their country and then either were killed or imprisoned because our government would no longer help. With all that, these same POW's, and those who served actively as QC's who saw families murdered and tortured by the NVA, still thank us for our service. I have absolutly no problem wearing the clothing made in Vietnam, probably in the South, nor as having them as my personal friends as well as friends of my family. They left family behind, those people who make a living on about $80.00 a month or less deserve a chance as well at life, it is not the life we fought to provide for them, but it is all they have. I personally am hoping to invite some former QC's to our dinner/reunion in San Antonio and hope that the members of VSPA can be as gracious as they have been to VSPA members, who for those who of us who served in Vietnam, wear and are honored by the same patch.

After all of these years it just dawned on me............about "being outside of the wire". At CRB and probably at Nha Trang as well, a portion of our normal posts were outside of the wire. Consider the Base being wide open on one side to all of the South China Sea. We had automatic weapons emplacements along the shore line. Steve Gattis was "outside of the wire" practically every night standing vigil for watercraft which strayed in too close to our shores. He resolved those frequent situations as many of our troops did. Being very frugal, he combined his challenge of "Dung Lai" with his nightly procedures. It was called "Test Firing" of his automatic weapon to make sure it was in good working order. Didn't you just love cleaning those weapons??

I had a rough night. Sleepless, worried and pained. I wrote this poem this morning. For all of us who suffer these types nights. Jack

    An Agent Called Orange

Oh how we dread the dark of night
When that wide door to the past is open
Once again we return to that endless fight
Only to awake in the morning light so lonesome

So much of our lives have been stolen
Leaving us tired in pain so forlorn
Cold shaking from being locked in this dungeon
Striking deep to the soul like a sharp thorn

Manhood robbed from us in our prime
Sickness not foreseen from the past
Taken by disease from the far away wartime
Now plague us one and all till the last

As we slowly wither and fade away
Soon to be lost from all thought
Let us take the time to pray
Hoping all we lost was not for naught

This may have been discussed before but for the benefit of new members as well as older ones that missed or forgot.Did your base have a tradition carried out when you worked your last tour of duty? Such as picking your own post or being singled out at guardmount? For awhile at Cam Ranh we could pick our own k9 post and we were singled out at guardmount afterwhich everyone upon dismissal picked up gravel and threw it at you. This being the rare times in which we wore the helmit at guardmount.

Don't get into the website much. Just saw the photos from Tower 320 in Nha Trang posted by Jim Costello. That brings back memories. Spent many nights in that tower doing everything I could think of to stay awake until the sun came up. C-rations, transistor radio, splashed water in my face from the canteens, etc. etc. etc. Unlike most of our towers it had a field telephone with a direct line to CSC and it had a grid map you could use to pinpoint coordinates where incoming rounds were coming from (unfortunately, the elements washed the map out so badly it was useless). The P.O.L. tower wasn't far from 320 and my PV started a fire in that tower to warm his c-rations one night. Not a good thing for either of us.

Four years ago I bought some pricey bedroom furniture from Haverty's. The store shipped it to the house and set it up. This morning my wife and I moved it around to do some fall cleaning and rearanging. I was stunned to see a "Made in Vietnam" stamp on the back of some of the pieces. I have mixed feelings about this. I thought after 40 years I was "okay" with the war but my first thought upon seeing the stamp was to take it out back and burn it. Its been a few hours since this happened and I'm not sure what to do. Had I known the stuff was made in Vietnam, I wouldn't have purchased it. I guess I'm not "okay" and I'll never get over it. Am I way off base to think this way?

I hope you enjoy it and can take something from it the next time you get confronted by the guys who just do not get it that we did our part too. Jack

    The Oath

We have all seen the smiles heard the laugh
When we proclaim the Air Force our chosen path
No combat infantryman badge do we wear
But in that terrible Vietnam war we were there

Just ask the 111 brave Security Policemen lost
Giving their all with the supreme cost
Security Policemen combat trained to be the best
Manning our posts guarding it all while other’s rest

Following the book applying all our training
Walking the fences of war hardly complaining
Young and Old men chosen to protect
To all kinds of hazards we were subject

The flying forces placed with us their trust
Knowing we would fight and die if we must
Carried away on the currents of war
Honoring the solemn oath we swore

We wear our badge of courage in our hearts
No matter what others believe we did our part
To protect from harm and keep safe
Our country the Grand Old United States

Photos of fallen Vietnam veterans sought
    9/18/09

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The organizers of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Federal Express are issuing a nationwide "call for photos" to help document the stories of those lost in the war.

The images will be compiled and displayed at an education center near the Vietnam Wall on the National Mall. To get the original snapshots converted to a digital image that can be stored, the retail chain FedEx Office is providing free electronic scanning service at its 1,600 stores across the country.

Colleen Shine, who lost her father and her uncle in the war, said the effort will pull together "the faces and stories of all the names on the Wall."

At least one photo is sought for each of the 58,195 names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. About 10,000 names are already represented on a Web site run by the memorial's foundation.

FedEx staff will also spend time collecting some details about the lost veteran, as described by the family and friends submitting the photographs at the store location.

Brother Airmen, let's talk about something REALLY important. Last week Gen. Petreus apologized to Chief of Staff Schwartz for that stupid joke he told at the Marine ASS. dinner. This week AF Times posted the Open Letter of Apology from Gen Petreus to all airmen. Google it, and the joke was lame. I've heard better.
So, so what? Last night in 'group' two of my Marine brothers went off on the AF, again. Same same about A/C trailers. When I and and a fellow airmen (wingnut) objected we got hooted by Army dudes et al. It never ends. At least the Gen. has the 'class' to apologize for impugning USAF culture. By the way joke was directed at pilots. Hawk

    "Waving To The Security Policemen

I am hoping that some of the former Security Police members can fill in the blanks on this story -- or at least will remember what happened.

I lived in one of the two female BOQs that were behind the VNAF Chapel (which had the impressive hole in the roof from an earlier rocket attack).

During the first half of my tour (April 1968 -- May 1969), there was a nurse who had started a tradition of standing on the second floor balcony of our building and waving at the SPs who passed, late in the afternoon, for a shift change.

Charles Penley, who is my guru on "all things TSN," has told me that the SPs could have been going to Bravo Sector, Charlie Sector, Delta Sector, or Base Police guard posts. (We just told at the time that they were going "out to the perimeter.")

This grew to be quite a "tradition." Other women in the "Q" who were off-duty would join her, and the women would wave and shout and clap for the guys, and the guys would wave and holler back.

This nurse must have worked a shift where she'd be back in her quarters by 1600 or thereabouts. I only got to participate in this "tradition" once that I recall.

I worked at 7AF Intelligence, and we worked until about 1800, so I was rarely there. (I worked in the secure area "behind the banana trees," which had an SP post to check us in and out.)

This went to the back of my mind until November 1992 and the tenth anniversary of The Wall.

Living in northern Virginia, I went into DC with a relative and a friend, both Vietnam vets, on November 11th to walk in the 10th anniversary parade. It was also the dedication of the Vietnam Women's Memorial, so there were many women there.

The three of us were heading for the Virginia section of the parade when someone told me, "Quick, go up to the front of the parade. The women are walking there and you should be there."

So I did, and there were probably about two dozen women in our contingent. As we walked and talked, this story suddenly came into my head and I mentioned it -- and someone in the group said, "There she is, over there." And it was the same woman. With the crush of people and all that was happening, I never got to talk to her.

In retrospect, I lived in the same small building, but I had never talked with her. We never really socialized with anyone other than the people with whom we worked. (Talk about staying in a small circle!)

If I had it to do over again, I would have expanded my circle -- and talked to this woman (and the others).

Does anyone remember this? I have a vague memory of being told at the time that she had been invited over to the SPs' area and they thanked her and "made a fuss about her." I hope that happened!

Maybe this will ring a bell with someone --

    "Welcome Home Brother!

    Greetings Brothers -
I took my mother to a wound clinic in Owosso two weeks ago. I had my Vietnam hat on and one of the girls asked if I had been in Vietnam. I told her yes and that I had been a skycop back then.

She mentioned that her dad was in Vietnam, and in the Air Police. She didn't have much information on him. She thought he'd been over their around 68-69 but didn't know what base. She thought he was a SSgt at the time and that he may have served three tours over there. His name was George Wathen. He never talked much about his time over there and he died a couple years ago. I was wondering if any of you might be familiar with George and if so if you could provide any information about him (base, security, LE, etc.) If so I thought I'd share it with this young lady. I expect I'll be seeing her a number of times while my mother's leg heals.

Thanks for your input and Welcome Home.

    Memories of War
Chained forever to the dank dungeon walls
of my mind, memories of a jungle war long past,
but traumatically remembered for all time.

Not a day or night goes by without thoughts of those
young warriors that served their country with valor
beyond duties' call and those forever solemnly
remembered on that cold, black granite wall.

Its been over three decades now, but to those who
were there, it seems like just yesterday somehow.

    Soldiers that stood tall…
    young men and women that
    answered their country's call.

    Heroes one and all!

When Grandpa comes and reads to me
I feel the sun and smell the sea.
I hear of men who caught the whales,
And then some wild safari tales.

He reads how cowboys rode the trails
And men worked hard to build the rails
That carried trains out to the west
Then baseball stories I like best.

    Grandpa can't do skateboards, though.
    He's not good with Nintendo.
These things I overlook, you see,
Cause I love him and he loves me.

    Grandmas...
It is remarkable how, overnight, a quiet mature lady can learn to sit cross-legged on the floor and play a tin drum, quack like a duck, sing all the verses of The Twelve Days Of Christmas, make paper flowers, draw pigs, and sew on the ears of severely-injured teddy bears.

One such member is LM 361, Greg Dunlap (K9), who has for years quietly volunteered to review all VSPA PDF files and personally adding index and table of contents capabilities rendering articles searchable by our search engine. This is a tremendously time-consuming and tedious effort that provides a valuable research tool for our members and civilian researchers.

I don't remember who wrote this poem but it is one of my favorite.

    THE EAGLE AND THE WOLF

    There is a great battle
    that rages inside me.

One side is a soaring eagle
    Everything the eagle stands for
is good and true and beautiful.

    It soars above the clouds.

Even though it dips down into the valleys,
it lays its eggs on the mountain tops.

The other side of me is a howling wolf.

    And that raging, howling wolf
represents the worst that is in me.

He eats upon my downfalls and
    justifies himself by his presence
    in the pack.

    Who wins this great battle?...
    The one I feed.

I will definitely miss being there. Bud Owens

  • Murder At Castle AFB -- Greg Giseburt, Fri, Sep 04 2009, 12:36:06 PDT (cpe-76-93-33-13.socal.res.rr.com/76.93.33.13)
Anyone out there stationed at Castle AFB in Merced, Ca around April '69 when either a SSgt or TSgt shot and killed a SSgt or TSgt in front of the NCO Club? I was on base police but was given the night off to go visit my dad in Fresno. He was there testing either the DC8 or DC9. When I got back to base that night I saw Security checking cars going off base. At first I thought maybe it was a ORI but found out what happened from the gate guard. Went to my room and got dressed and reported. Found out later when I was Seymore Johnson with the 822nd that the guy got off. I knew that when my flight chief had rolled the victim over that he had a small pocket knief under him with the blade out, hence self defence.

  • Lt. Col. Leonard Mittelman has passed. -- Kevin McGuire, Sun, Sep 06 2009, 8:49:47 PDT (cpe-70-117-22-223.satx.res.rr.com/70.117.22.223)
I had the pleasure of knowing this gentleman later in his life. I wish I would have talked to him more about his service.
If anyone has stories or memories of him please email me.
    May he rest in peace.

    Leonard Mittelman
Born in Brooklyn, New York on Aug. 29, 1931
Died Aug. 25, 2009 and resided in San Antonio, TX.

Known for his kindness, wit, a penchant for practical jokes, and his "perfect" handlebar mustache, Leonard Mittelman passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2009.

He went to Southern Methodist University in Dallas on a football scholarship graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and a commission as a Second Lieutenant.

Len entered the Air Force and had a distinguished 24 year career in the Security Police field retiring in 1978 as a Lieutenant Colonel.

He was a Vietnam veteran decorated for heroism, saving the lives of Vietnamese passengers on a sinking boat while putting his own at risk. He often said the highlight of his military career was meeting his wife, Madge Carlisle in England who was his beloved companion for over 52 years.

Although his distinguished career took him around the world, they made San Antonio their home. Len went on to a second career at St. Phillip's College in San Antonio retiring as the Director of Student Activities and a third career as an Events Coordinator for the city of Live Oak, TX.

He was an active participant in walking events and volunteered his time with the San Antonio Road Runners for many years.

Len is survived by his wife Madge, his son and daughter-in-law Greg and Tammy, and his twin sister Florence.

He will rest at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation at PO Box 369 Kendalia, TX 78027, phone (830)336-2725, www.wildlife-rescue.org.

Don and Larry send their heartfelt thanks to everyone for their support before and after their Mom passed away. 30 family members were able to gather and say goodbye.

Funeral arrangements will be private, family only. Don and Larry have asked that in lieu of flowers or donations, that you take someone you love to a nice dinner, or buy the grandkids some ice cream, or just do something nice for someone.

Thanks again for your prayers and good thoughts for the Poss Family.

    Gentlemen......

Our Fall 2009 reunion is now only about 5 weeks away. Newell and his staff have been working hard to ensure this is a memorable event for all of us.

We are putting the final touches on our first golf tournament and soon I will need to turn in numbers to the golf pro at Luke AFB. The course, Falcon Dunes has consistently been rated as one of the top golf courses in all of the DOD.

So, if yo're thinking of joining us for a morning of golf and more importantly camradrie on Thursday, October 8th, and haven't already signed up, please do so now by contacting either Erlyce Pekas or me.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all.

    MD
