You know after I mentioned the fact that after a whirlwind of activity the last three or so weekends we might have one to relaxe . Forget about that. This comming weekend iS the celebration of the D Day Invasion at the Memorial in Bedford , Va..

As we know in SW Virginia the Memorial was place in Beford, va. because it had the most casualties per capita by far of any community in the country . The majority of the members of a small town Bedford , Va. National Guard Unit was wiped out diring the first wave to hit the beach at Operation Overlord during the invasion. The Town of Bedford was hit very hard by the loses .

My group affiliated with the local UAW Ride Veterans will be escorting a Surviving D Day Veteran to the Memorial where he will be joining a Dwindling Group of other WW11 DDay Related Veterans which will most likely be the last such reunion for the majority of them with a day full of ceremony. Check out the activities at www.dday.org sam

I witnessed an emotional event yesterday..The Wall That Heals is coming to Johnson City TN (about 15 Miles from my home) June 4-7. Upon hearing that the caravan was close to my home..my wife, granddaughter and I drove so that we could see it pass. The memorial was escorted by more than 300 motorcycles (POW/MIA Advocacy group Rolling Thunder and another 40 to 50 vehicles behind it as it traveled to its destination to Johnson City. The paper also reported that tons of people lined the sides of the road to see the escort. I have seen the Vietnam memorial in Washington DC and also the travelling memorial in Virgina. I had such a warm feeling as I made my way home and I have so many cherished memories of my tour in Vietnam. Thank you guys for serving our country and Welcome Home.

Received this link "Warriors the Film" from a friend. Has anyone seen or heard about this movie? After watching the trailer to it, I'm not sure I could sit through the whole thing if purchased. It stired the pot too much. Seems more for those who have never served. We already know the sacrifices one must make, and have indeed made them. Perhaps I'm being too critical of the movie with the little that was shown. Then again, maybe the short clip was just enough.

  • What Is Stress ? -- chaplain steve, Sat, May 30 2009, 19:48:27 PDT (cache-dtc-aa12.proxy.aol.com/205.188.116.16)
    What Is Stress ?

    What is stress ?
Stress is never feeling safe for a year.
    What is stress?
It is watching your buddies age over night and wondering if they think the same about you.
    What is stress ?
It is wondering if your weapon will jam just when you need it the most.
    What is stress ?
It is hearing a rocket come over the perimeter missing your area then feeling guilty because it puts someone else at risk.
    What is stress ?
It is chambering a round and praying you don't have to shoot.
    What is stress ?
It is not planning for the future because it can't be seen.
    What is stress ?
It is wondering what it is like to die and if you will ever see your family and friends again.
    What is stress ?
It is working 15 days in a row because there are not enough men and too many posts.
    What is stress ?
It is working the post you hate the most because it is the least secure and most vulnerable one for being attacked.
    What is stress ?
It is a feeling of hopelessness when good friends leave to go home before you. You are glad they are going then mad they are going but you don't know why.
    What is stress ?
It is hoping you get mail then not being able to write back how you really feel.
    What is stress ?
It is burying all your anger, mistrust, and resentments for many years until you find a safe place to slowly let it out with others who know what you are saying
    and talking about.
Stress from war is all that and more. Each one has a war unique to their very own experience. A traumatic experience magnifies the stress that has been buried. To all the new guys welcome home. You can let down your guard here..

Another Skycop has left us. Richard E. "Rick" Stephens recently passed away following a lengthy illness. Rick's wife doesn't know much about his service, particularly his Vietnam service, but does know that he was one of us somewhere in-country (he evidently didn't speak much of it). His service dates were from May of 1970 to May of 1974 and she thinks his last duty assignment was with the 90th Missile Security Squadron (SAC) at Francis E. Warren AFB, Wyoming. Apparently he lived in Knoxville, TN after discharge. If anyone remembers Rick, you might want to post as I've advised his wife of the website and I'm sure she would appreciate it.

Okay all your historians, how many bases or stations have the USAF AP/SP/SFS provided security for or still providing security? At Tan My, it was a Coast Guard Station, with a Ljg Commander in charge but the Air Force was the sole security provider for the base. Was Dong Ha the same way or did the Air Force only provided security for their portion of the base, like it was at Da Nang when the Marines and later the ARVN guarded part of the perimeter?

    Ladies and Gents,

Please join me in welcoming Pete Lutz to membership in the VSPA. Pete served as an Augmentee at Phan Rang in 1968-69, and now lives in Wisconsin. He found us through our explosively informative website.

You all probably know that it's frequently difficult for guys who served alongside us as Augmentees to prove they did that. There's never anything on a guy's DD-214, so Augmentee applicants are usually scratching to find some other paperwork that oh-by-the-way mentions their Augmentee duty. Well, Pete set a new high for documentation; he submitted a copy of a Letter of Appreciation from his squadron commander citing his "outstanding efforts as an Augmentee Security Policeman ... accepting responsibility for the defense of this base during emergency conditions."

Now THAT'S a demonstration of outstanding leadership from a supply squadron Lt. Colonel who made the extra effort to give one of his troops something lasting, instead of a pat on the head - or nothing at all - for stepping up.

    Welcome Home!

    First Firefight

I caught him in the lights.. the whole war seemed to stop
As I aimed and put him in my sights.
I could stop him but would I give my position away.
Should I squeeze a few off or should I wait here and stay?
Are there others I do not see listening for noise so they can overrun me?.
How long do I wait.. has someone got me in his sights?
This is the part of war that I hate.
He looks to the right...spots me and dives behind some bushes and hits the ground.
The next morning a huge pool of blood at that exact spot was found.
I can still see his face. He looked so very young.
Sometimes I wonder if he knows that his side won
And does it matter to him.

You know its a funny thing when events happening NOW, take you back to Nam. I was in the ASrmy stationed in Panama as an MP in the 193rd Infantry for 3 years prior to joining the USAF, and experienced several Monsoon seasons out in the bush and while at JWTC(Jungle Warfare Training).........but nothing to compare with the monsoon in Nam.I was in an AP/SP Unit that worked mostly outside the wire at Bien Hoa and DaNang)
Here in Florida, it has rained 26 ins in 7 days and Daytona Beach is flooded...I found myself staring out the window at the rain coming down in sheets, and traveling in my mind back to Nam durning the monsoon season.,,Strange...not Panama but Nam.
Once, a while ago, the Wife and I went to Key Largo for a week(in the Keys) and took a walking tour of the mangrove swamps...I had to back out..the smell of rotting plants and the dark damp swamps sort of played with my mind...to this day I can't handel the smell of rotting vegitation.
I guess its something we may all have to overcome....
Anyone else ever experience something like this ? Or am I 3 cans short of a six pack.?

    Gents & Ladies:

I am still amazed at how the Life Membership program is still going strong! With 564 LMembers now, we will likely hit 600 in the coming months.

Originally, and for years, members kept asking about why VSPA didn't have a life membership program. In time, we decided to offer it, and see if it would work for our members. It did, and how!

Annual members occasionally ask if the LMembers get a special decoder-ring or something that gives them secret access to "stuff". The answer is a simple, No. LM is simply the best long range membership price for those who want it, and doesn't make "us" better than anyone or more special. Phil Carroll/Membership will quickly correct me if I am wrong, but I think "payments" for LM is a consideration, should someone want to make a couple of payments rather than coughing up the full amount for their age-group.

So why purchase a Life Membership? When it started, we were up to LMember #36 before I decided "I want one of those!" It is a life commitment from me to you and VSPA. When I'm too old and forgetful to remember to renew a membership, my LM will still be there, and maybe someone will wonder whatever happened to that old crotchity fart and give me a call, or email, or whatever tech they have in the future.

So. I like being a LM of VSPA. No extra whistles and bells...just a life committment to our Brotherhood.

    :-)

PS: My car is ready, at the car wash (and yes, I found the computer room).

    A MEMORIAL DAY TRIBUTE
    author unknown

    I watched the flag
    Pass by one day,
    It fluttered in the breeze.
    A young Marine
    Saluted it,
And then he stood at ease..
    I looked at
    Him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
    With hair cut square
    And eyes alert
He ' d stand out in any crowd.
    I thought how many men
    Like him
    Had fallen through the years.
    How many died on foreign
    Soil
    How many mothers ' tears?
    How many pilots ' planes
    Shot down?
    How many died at sea
How many foxholes were soldiers '
    Graves ?
No, freedom isn ' t free
I heard the sound of Taps
    One night,
    When everything was still,
    I listened to the bugler
    Play
    And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant ' Amen, '
When a flag had draped a
    Coffin.
Of a brother or a friend.
    I thought of all the
    Children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
    Of fathers, sons and
    Husbands
    With interrupted lives.
    I Thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
    Of unmarked graves in
    Arlington .
No, freedom isn ' t free.

Today I got a note from VSPA member Bob Van de Riet, NKP 1971-72, letting me know that his wife passed away just a few months ago. With his permission, I'm posting this to let the membership know. You may wish to send him a message of condolence or friendship; he's a Brother going through a terrible loss.

    It's what we do.

    Welcome Home,

    Hello to all.

I just got home from Portland, Oregon, where my wife and I said our goodbye to our son, Jeff, who is deploying to Iraq. He is a military police captain in the 41st Special Troops Battalion of the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team. We were full of emotions regarding the deployment. Jeff's eight year commitment was complete, yet he volunteered to go to be with his troops. We understand that commitment and are intensely proud of him. When we dropped him off, I went away with a deeper understanding of what my parents went through 41 years ago when I volunteerd to go to Vietnam on a direct PCS from Korea. Although they talked about it with me, I never really got it until I watched Jeff walk away.

While we were in Portland, we also had the opportunity to visit with Phil Carroll, a dear friend and a man who lives our motto We Take Care of Our Own. Phil attended the deployment ceremony with us and took some photographs that are an extraordinary treasure. They are better than we could have ever hoped for and something we could not have done as we watched the deployment ceremony and focused on our son.

As we made the long drive home to Texas and stayed in hotels across the country, Phil planted photos as breadcrumbs in our email, something for us to look forward to each day. They made all the difference.

When a friend and brother does so much for you, there is no way to ever really thank him that will be adequate. A simple thank youy will never be enough. Phil has our never ending thanks and will always be known as the man who made a huge difference in our lives when we were more than a little numb.

My best to all of you and a BIG BIG THANK YOU to Phil.

    Steve

    Brothers and Sisters,

An old friend just made my day. I got a call this morning from my Brother and very dear friend Alexander Liverano, Takhli and NKP 1970-71, who just a couple weeks ago went through some extremely tough surgery. He's had some painful complications and a prolonged recovery, but he's finally showing some slow improvement. He wasn't able to talk for long, but he specifically asked me to thank all of you for the prayers and messages and for just having him in your thoughts when he needed all the help he could get.

    I thank you as well.

Happy Memorial Day, and Welcome Home!

Memorial Day has gone for now, but to us it will not be forgotten. I will remember this Memorial Day more then others I think as I was informed on Thurday and Friday of last week that two retired deputies that I worked with in the Sheriff's Dept for Santa Barbara CO had passed away. Both were Army Veterans and one, Jack Edgar, was a Vietnam Vet. Once Jack found out that I had served in Nam, he did not care if it wasn't the Army, he would call me atleast once a week while we were working just to chat. Jack really cared for his men and his nick name was Tactical Jack, as deputy safety was number one. Jim "Bud" Means was a great friend who was my partner on most of my callouts when we were on the bomb squad. Bud and I were like two peas on a pod. They will be remembered for their outstanding service to the citizens of Santa Barbara County and by me for not only being friends, but fellow veterans. Rest in peace my brothers.

BREAKING NEWS: Patrick soldier killed in Iraq

    Friday, May 22, 2009
By GINNY WRAY - Bulletin Staff Writer
First Lt. Leevi Khole Barnard, 28, of Ararat in Patrick County, has been killed in action while serving on his third tour of duty in Iraq, according to his grandfather, Thomas L. Barnard of Ararat.
Barnard said the family was notified of the death at midnight Thursday. He said they have few details of the incident, except that there were eight servicemen involved and three were killed. He was not sure when or where the incident occurred.
Barnard was the son of Pamela Jane Barnard Payne of Patrick County, the daughter of Thomas Barnard and his wife, Daisy Barnard.
First Lt. Barnard went to Blue Ridge Elementary School and graduated from Patrick County High School in 1998, according to a release from Patrick County School Superintendent Roger Morris.
Thomas Barnard said his grandson was in JROTC in high school and then worked and also went to school after he graduated. He had been in the military for several years, Barnard said.
“It is difficult to imagine the loss to our community, particularly at a time of remembering our fallen soldiers,” Morris wrote Friday.
Morris has ordered that the flags at all Patrick County schools be lowered to half-staff until Barnard’s burial. He also requested that a moment of silence in the schools on Tuesday be dedicated in Barnard’s memory.

My first visit to the wall was at the 2007 DC reunion also my first reunion. I wrote this poem that afternoon when we returned to the hotel. Jack the Old Cowboy poet
    .
    RIBBON OF STONE
Hearts fill with pain, from eyes tears fall
When one gazes upon the Black Wall
See the names of our fallen, one and all

That black stone wall so solemn it stands
A sobering tribute to military women and men
The dark wall that makes us all kin

Brothers and Sisters of a long ago war
Of a time when we were young and tried to soar
Giving all we had and than more

Honor those who did not return
Share the lessons we have learned
Knowing that a heavenly reward, our fallen earned

So stand before that Black Ribbon of Stone
Read the names engraved of our own
Who died to keep this great land our home

Their Valor Will Never Be Forgotton

There are times and places never forgotten
People and events that have affected us all
Some were that of a life and death struggle

We have made friends for life with our buddies
We had each others backs through long nights
While searching the black abyss for the enemy

You knew these guys to your right and left well
They would have died for you as you for them too
Our brothers doing their duty defending freedom

An experience unlike any other the bond between warriors
Knowing regardless of what happened they had you covered
They fought like knights of old all for one and one for all

These men were the best serving in the Air Force then
They saw their duty clearly and carried out their mission
It was because of these warriors that we came home alive

They were young and they were determined to do their duty
They stood their ground and never wavered once in battle
They faced it all and their valor will never be forgotten

This, like every year, is a special time for me and what's left of my family. We have always answered the call and have paid the ultimate price. My Uncle Pete,a sailor,my Fathers brother died in the Battle for Midway, Uncle Joe, a Marine,my Mothers youngest Brother died somewhere at Makin Atoll in the Pacific. Another of her Brothers, also a Marine, died somewhere in Korea. Add to that I lost my best friend who I grew up with. You will not find his name on the Wall because he died upon his return home from Vietnam. One day he was overcome and just took his own life.
So Memorial Days is a time to pay our respects to all our Brothers, to honor them for they have made the ultimate sacrifice. I fly the flag year round but tomorrow it will be at half-mast
Several years ago I went to the Wall for Memorial Day and for the first time since I came home.....I wept

    Everyone,
First of all, I wish everyone out there, a great, fantastic MEMORIAL DAY...with friends & family.

"IF" any of you can take a few minutes, hours etc., to visit your local Memorial Day events, and manage to pull yourselves away from a family weekend outing...'just for a little while'.....it might be something you might want to consider.

SOME OF US, are still "working", sometimes on weekends, unfortunately. Especially, those in law enforcement.
With this terrible economy nation-wide, many folks are stuck working second jobs (weekends) just to try and make ends meet. THAT is understandable.

But, those of you that can spare a few minutes at your local Memorial Day events...please do. For many years, I have tried to do just THAT.

"WHY"? Simply because, I feel I owe it to "those that did NOT return home, back from all the wars"...who perhaps died on a lonely battlefield somewhere or, that went down in a blaze of flame to the hard ground, from the heavens....or, sank with their shipmates down into a black watery grave."

I was lucky to come home alive, from Vietnam & Desert Storm.
I was lucky enough to survive the hard knocks of civilian
law enforcement. I am damn lucky to be a "survivor".

I am 61 years old, retired from the Air Force and LASD, and I am damn forunate & lucky to finally enjoy my pensions and time with my wife, family and hobbies. But, IT NEVER LEAVES MY THOUGHTS just how VERY lucky I really am.
I thank GOD every day for all I have, and for "surviving".

While I am still here on this good green earth,I will always give thanks everywhere & anyway I can.IT THE LEAST I CAN DO.

This is just a "reminder" to ALL of YOU, my fellow VSPA brothers....to consider somekind of local Memorial Day event participation. Memorial Day comes just once a year.
If it was the other way around, "THEY" would be doing it for "US".

I have plans this Memorial Day weekend to drive up to Lake Arrowhead (Calif.)to our mountain home, with family & friends..but, I am driving down the mountain on Monday, Memorial Day to participate again, at the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Riverside National Veterans Cemetery, across from March ARB, off of the 15 FWY. starting at 10am.

I will be joining other VSPA and Calif. Inland Empire Chapter (Air Force Security Forces Association)members to lay the VSPA & AFSFA Wreaths at the event. "OTHER" veterans groups will be doing the same.

I will also be there, representing the National Veterans Coalition, as the national chairman.

Anyways, God Bless you all, and always..."DEFENSOR FORTIS"!
Maybe I will get to see some of you guys there in Riverside!

I had the scare of my life on Mothers Day. I was replacing the radiator on my daughter's car when I started having chest pains.

I sat down in the shade and told my daughter I wasn't feeling so great. The thermometer was nearing the 100 mark. She got a wet towel to cool me off and insisted I take a couple of aspirins. When the pain didn't subside, I asked her to take me over into Needles to the ER.

When they hooked me up to the EKG, they said that I had a blood clot blocking the artery in back of my heart. After getting the clot buster shots, I got a helicopter ride to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas.(My first helicopter ride since Vietnam) On Monday, they put a stint into the blocked artery. the procedure was successful.

I'm resting at home now and feeling lucky to be alive.
I'm having to watch things like my blood sugar and blood pressure much more closely now.

    FREEDOM IS NOT FREE

They say I'm short and homeward bound.
Then why is there no happiness found?
One year here will soon be ore.
And I'll walk to that Freedom Bird door.
But I can't relax, no letting down.. why?
Because to let down may mean to die.
It's like a dream, can it really be.
Everyone cheers as we fly by..
But thinking of Friends below just makes me sigh.
God be with you, I know your fears.
I didn't know it then, but the next time I'd see some
Of you would be twenty years.

The plane gets me home and I kiss the ground.
The family I left is the same one I found.
We embrace and hug and cannot separate.
The difference in life and death is only fate.
When I was there I dreamed of home.
Now I am here but how my mind does roam.

When I was young I was taught at school.
That freedom wasn't free and about the Golden Rule.
I know them both but one came hard.
To learn it I had to leave my own back yard.

A peaceful memorial weekend to you and yours

Bill, I disagree with your regret not being with us on Dec. 24, 1966. I remember you to be the most "Strike" NCO, especially an E7, I ever met during my short career in the Air Police. I saw some sharp E5's but never an E7 that showed up for Guardmount every night like you were on a presidential detail. I just want to share with my Security Force buddies a story about the night I stood Ambush Detail with you and was it SSgt. Tom Holderness or SSgt. Robert Taylor? We were on the roof of a BEQ in a narrow alley in Cholon that was supposed to be hit by a suicide squad driving a truck bomb to the front of the BEQ. I believe Nung Guards were down on the street level armed with shotguns. We were up on the roof armed with M16's. Truthfully, I wished I had time that night to write my folks a letter before showing up with you on that BEQ rooftop because I thought it was going to be my last detail on earth. If that truck showed up that early morning and carried out its mission there would have been no place for us to go but down with the dust and rubble. There were a lot of things flashing before my mind but quitting was not one of them; I was proud to be there with you. I never said a word to you while we were on the roof top because I stayed on my post and watched all night for Charlie to show up. I would glance over from time to time, you appeared to be ready for anything that came your way. Your demeanor taught me how to conduct myself that night and all the other days and nights there after facing Charlie. You spent everyday, 24/7, making sure we knew what to do when the time came to Man-up. You were "there" with us Bill; You were the Shaq of all NCO's; You would have been leading the charge: Biting Charlies head off and pissing down his throat!

    You were "there" Sarge.

Just a little short poem I wrote this morning. God Bless you all. Jack the Old Cowboy

    Memorial Day

Flags of red white and blue flutter in the wind
Placed upon the resting place of valiant military men

These flags gently erected by caring hands
For those lost in wars at home and in foreign lands

From our largest cities to the smallest town
Proud but humble veterans gather around

Honoring those that never came home
Tending through the years so they are not alone

There on bright sun lit days or mornings of frost
Veterans taking care of comrades lost

Never asking for anything in return
Just hoping that the young watch and learn

So when we are finally laid to rest
New veterans with step up and do their best

Showing as we have the honor deserved
For this lands freedom that we preserved

    Brothers,

At our Webmaster's request I compiled all the VSPA BB posts and emails I had received about the anniversary of the Mayaguez and Knife 13 into one document. He added that document to the VSPA website's compiled history. Then I shared it with Jerry Haupt, a retired Air Force Security Forces troop (former SAC ramp rat) who has been rehired as a civilian at Luke AFB and is our contact there for the reunion and the 56th SPS/SFS memorial ceremony we’re planning.

Last night I got this very touching reply from Jerry:

    Phil,
Thanks so much for sharing this. I forwarded it out to all unit members so that our young troops have a better understanding of the spirit and dedication of the unit members that came before us. These messages are very touching and really humanize our history. Do you think the individuals that posted these messages would mind if I contacted them? I would like to keep them informed of our annual retreat ceremonies, and make sure they know that they are still part of this unit.
    Thanks again,
    Jerry

Guys, this is the first time since I left NKP that anybody has suggested to me that I was still a part of the 56th. I left Nakhon Phanom 38 years ago tomorrow. I am just about speechless.

Just for the record, I told Jerry that I thought our guys would welcome the personal contact from him. I suspect that most of our members, wherever they served, whatever their unit, would welcome the notion that they’re still part of that old outfit.

I guess some of the active-duty folks in the Air Force are still all about “taking care of their own.”

    Welcome Home!

We agreed that if the book is not back to the publisher by 1 August then we (the VSPA members) will discuss options suggested by members who have purchased the book. The Sgt Major was a Life Member of both VSPA and Safeside. He was a true American Hero. Willie Squires and Chaplain Jim placed the button at the base of The Wall's "V," where the East and West panels meet, to signify the beginning and end of a war that has affected all of us. Many of you may not know it but non-perishable items left at The Wall are collected each evening by the Park Rangers and they are catalogued and stored in a Smithsonian warehouse in Suitland, MD. These artifacts are rotated through various displays in the American History Museum. When the underground Information Center is built, there will be a large display of artifacts there as well. Bob's button will live on, long after all of us are gone. Thanks again, Bob.

WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - West Melbourne Police announced on Wednesday that Officer Jason Campbell has been selected as the Lee McGehee Police Officer of the Year for 2008 by the Florida Police Chief's Association (FPCA). Officer Campbell competed with other officers from agencies of similar size. Campbell is a Field Training Officer (instructor of newly assigned officers), a Patrol Officer, a Firearms Instructor, a Defensive Tactics Instructor, a Taser Instructor and a K9 Instructor/Handler.

"I am extremely proud of FTO Jason Campbell," said West Melbourne Police Chief Brian K. Lock. "Jason epitomizes all of the qualities that we want in a law enforcement officer and we are extremely fortunate to have him in West Melbourne."

The agency cited numerous occasions when Campbell and his K9 partner, Razor, teamed up to track and capture fleeing criminals, solve major crimes and recover valuable stolen property. Palm Bay Police requested Campbell's assistance in locating a murder suspect who had fled on foot during a traffic stop. Campbell also participated in several community functions including K9 demonstrations at schools and the Police Department Open House.

The Florida Police Chiefs Association established the Police Officer of the Year Award in 1998 to recognize police officers who have demonstrated exceptional achievement and shown a genuine commitment to their profession.

    All,

The curator of the Security Forces Museum, Ms. Milita Rios-Samaniego, is asking for VSPA help in digging up some documentation. She's remodeling part of the museum having to do with honoring the fallen. There is one name in the previous informational materials that she cannot find any records on, nor can she document that he actually perished in Vietnam. The name is A1C Robert G. Grant III, and the date of death her record shows is 29 May 1969. His name is not on The Wall, and there's no Air Force casualties on that date on the wall at all.

The VSPA website has him listed only in one place, our page of Air Force AP/SP recipients of the Bronze Star w/V. It's not shown as posthumous, and there's no Purple Heart listed with the Bronze Star.

If anybody has any knowledge or information about this Skycop, please contact me as soon as possible and I'll get your information passed on to the museum.

    Thanks, and Welcome Home!

The "Help Desk" for our web site will be "closed" from about 2100 this evening until sometime on Monday evening. I apologize for any inconvenience. Hopefully, none of our Members will have any problems while I am out of town.

I will be leaving Friday morning to drive up to DC to wash OUR precious Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, so it will be clean for next week's Memorial Day activities. I try to do this twice a year because OUR Memorial was bought and paid for by the blood, sweat, tears and money of our Brothers and Sisters. The maintenance and upkeep also comes from private donations and volunteer labor. We will not allow OUR Memorial to fall in a state of neglect and disrepair that has claimed some other Memorials in DC.

If any of you are in the DC area, I hope to see you there on Saturday morning at 0615. We will meet by the statue of the 3 soldiers at the entrance by the Lincoln Memorial. On-street parking is available along Constitution Avenue between 21st and 23rd Streets, and on those streets as well. If you take the Metro, take the Orange or Blue Line and get off at Foggy Bottom. Exit the station from the George Washington University escalator and turn right, down 23rd street, past State Department to Constitution Ave. Cross Constitution and there is a Memorial entrance right there. We will be finished by 0800, before Visitors start arriving.

If you can make it, be sure to wear your Vietnam Vet hats. Hope to see you there.

  • 34 years ago tonight -- Phil Carroll - LM #336, Wed, May 13 2009, 10:31:33 PDT (dd.fws.gov/164.159.60.2)
This has already been posted on, below, but I need to add a little on the subject. Thirty-four years ago tonight 18 of our Brothers perished enroute to a rescue mission. I won't ever forget them, though I only knew one personally. I've had the honor of taking rubbings of their names from The Wall. For those visitors to this site who don't know about the story, I'll paste in a little summary of it here from an essay I wrote about Nakhon Phanom.

Before I tell that part of the story, though, I want to acknowledge what every other Skycop in Thailand in May 1975 went through during those tense days. Many thought that this was the start of a new war with Cambodia; there was good reason for a while to believe that Knife 13 had been shot down as it flew close to the border of Laos; everybody reasonably feared that the gathering rescue mission at U-Tapao would come under attack, and if it did the rest of our bases in Thailand were equally threatened; nobody knew anything for sure but that there had been an armed attack on a merchant vessel and a helo full of rescuers had suddenly dropped off radar into the jungle canopy at night. That was a frightening time. God bless them all, and all of you remembering them with me today.

On 12 May 1975 the civilian container ship “Mayaguez” was seized by Cambodians and its 40-man crew imprisoned. President Ford wanted an immediate and decisive military response to this piracy, and the Marines were too far away to respond quickly enough to suit him. According to a USAF Security Forces History of Combat Operations, “The men of the 56th Security Police Squadron trained as a unit and were hailed throughout 13th Air Force as a capable assault force.... The [President’s] advisors looked for the nearest unit capable of mounting an assault upon the ship under combat conditions. The only unit with such a reputation closer to the scene than the Third Marine Division was the 56th Security Police Squadron at Nakhon Phanom RTAFB.” Seventy-five hand-picked volunteers were quickly assembled and a rescue attempt was started. Sadly, a CH-53 helicopter, “Knife 13,” carrying a flight crew of five, a linguist, and eighteen Security Police and K-9 troops, crashed into the jungle near the Laotian border in the middle of the night. All on board were killed. Days later the bloody rescue mission for the Mayaguez crew was finally carried out. Although a number of U.S. Navy, Marine and Air Force personnel, and 56th Special Operations Wing aircraft were lost, eventually the crew of the Mayaguez was released.

  • Gettysburg, Mini Reunion Update -- Den Cook, Terry Morris, Tue, May 12 2009, 13:13:03 PDT (cache07.dca.untd.com/64.136.27.231)
    Mini Reunion update.

It seems that many of those attending the mini reunion in Gettysburg are from in state and may be just there for the day. John Tudor, our guide thru the battlefield, said that 1300 hours on Saturday, the 20th of June would work just fine. Denis tells me there is a music festival in Gettysburg at that time as well. You can check it out at gettysburgfestival.org

For those of us that live too far away or want to spend more than one or two days in the area, there are options. We have yet to locate our meeting place as we all will be staying in different locations. That will be determined.

John sent some campgrounds in the area and I’ll share them with you.

    1. Drummer Boy Camp Resort www.drummerboycampresort.com

    800-293-2808

    2. Gettysburg KOA

    1-717-642-5713

    3. Round Top Campground www.roundtopcampground.com

    1-717-334-9565

Motels are plentiful but as any tourist area they are more expensive. You might try www.pavisnet.com and enter motels and Gettysburg or other nearby city.

    Others I’ve found are;

    1. Cross Keys Motor Inn crosskeysmotorinn.com

    1-717-624-7778 1 adult $92.65 2 adults $103.55 + tax

    2. Gettysburg Travel Lodge $107.

    1-800-551-2409

    3. Fairfield Lodge www.fairfieldlodge.com

    1-717-642-642-8245

    4. On the less expensive side the Blue Sky Motel www.blueskymotel.com

    $59. W/shower $67 W/ bath

They claim it’s not the “Ritz” but rooms are clean and quiet.

I do not endorse any of these, they’re just some options that I’ve found. Just google Gettysburg motels and you’ll find many more. But don’t wait too long, I’ve found some that are full already.

I’ll try to keep you all updated but remember this is a mini reunion, no fees, registration costs, no bus trips etc. I can’t wait. See you there.

    Terry and Denis
