Being a newbie I didn't recognize any faces in the montage, but I still enjoyed looking and wishing I was there.

It did leave me with one question though:
Who let all those old guys in? I haven't seen that much white since since Christmas!

The reunion was GREAT, you guys were great, the folks at the 56th were great!!! I made it home at about 1500 hr today..., The 1 1/2 lane road of Right Fork holler never looked so good! Quiet...,

I had to wait for my ride at the Louisville Hooters for almost 2 hours..., it's amazing what a man can endure. It might just be me, but I do think it was better than waiting in the airport (LOL). I am planning for next year's reunion..., You might want to try it.

TORONTO (Reuters) – A Canadian truck driver has been fined for smoking in his vehicle because it is considered his workplace, a police spokeswoman said on Friday.

A police officer saw the 48-year-old trucker driving on a highway in southwestern Ontario with a cigarette in his mouth on Wednesday, and gave him a C$305 ($290) ticket.

The Smoke-Free Ontario Act, adopted in 2006, prohibits smoking in an enclosed workplace or enclosed public area, and that extends to work vehicles, said Constable Shawna Coulter of the Ontario Provincial Police in Essex County.

"We enforce the legislation and this truck driver was in violation of that," she said.

WASHINGTON (Oct. 13, 2009) - Relying on an independent study by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki decided to establish a service-connection for Vietnam Veterans with three specific illnesses based on the latest evidence of an association with the herbicides referred to Agent Orange.

The illnesses affected by the recent decision are B cell leukemias, such as hairy cell leukemia; Parkinson's disease; and ischemic heart disease.

Used in Vietnam to defoliate trees and remove concealment for the enemy, Agent Orange left a legacy of suffering and disability that continues to the present. Between January 1965 and April 1970, an estimated 2.6 million military personnel who served in Vietnam were potentially exposed to sprayed Agent Orange.

In practical terms, Veterans who served in Vietnam during the war and who have a "presumed" illness don't have to prove an association between their illnesses and their military service. This "presumption"

simplifies and speeds up the application process for benefits.

The Secretary's decision brings to 15 the number of presumed illnesses recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Well, lets kick off the on line reunion. Jim Burke here, I live in Bakersfield, CA. I am married with two kids and 1 grandson. I joined the USAF in Aug, 1968 and after Basic training and SP Tec School, I was sent to Anderson AFB, Guam. After 2 Bob Hope shows and 18 months, I went stateside to Seymour Johnson AFB, NC. When I got to the base and found out that I would be humping a BUF for my remaining time in the Air Force, I went to personnel and asked to be sent to Vietnam. The airman looked at me, said, You already have spent your time overseas. I looked at him and stated, You ever walked around a B-52 all day, send me to Nam. About a month later, I got orders for AZR school at Lackland. AFter AZR, it was about another month and I got orders for Da Nang AB, RSV. I was at Da Nang for about a month when the flight sgt asked if any one would like to go work at a satillite base. I raised my hand and about another month later, I was headed north in a grey 3/4 truck. Next stop, USCG LORAN C Station, Tan My. I was an USAF Security Policeman guarding a Coast Guard station. We had the biggest target in Vietnam to shoot at. It was a 600 ft radion tower. Well, after Nam, I went to Otis AFB, Mass until my discharge. When I got out, I worked for my dad for a year and then started my career in Law Enforcement. 30 yrs later, I gave it up. Now I work for AAA doing dmv work and helping vets with their diasbled plates and purple heart plates. Well, that's it in a nutshell. Lets get typing brothers.

  • Pride in today's AF SFS Airmen -- Don Poss, Mon, Oct 12 2009, 23:16:57 PDT (cpe-75-82-158-38.socal.res.rr.com/75.82.158.38)
Luke AFB was my seventh reunion. I am sure most of the first-timers at the reunion arrived with the same uncertain feelings I had at my first reunion, and left claiming as their own the bond of brotherhood forged in Vietnam and Thailand.

Year after year, reunion after reunion, I am so proud to see the Security Force Airmen. In the past, I would have mentioned ‘both men and women’ but that is no longer necessary to even state, as it is so obvious there are only ‘Airmen’ doing their duty in today’s Air Force.

This reunion, the 56th SFS Airmen taught me many things through their stories, and in listening to them I was able to understand a little more about what we experienced in our war. I also recognized the long-walk we are still making, they are only now beginning.

I have noticed subtle changes in SF Airmen over the last few years, and now I understand what it is. Just talking with them and you will quickly feel our brotherhood bond encompasses them…and if truth be told, it is returned embracing us as if they somehow want our acceptance…and actually thank us for leading the way…and you know their words are from the heart. You can see the weariness of war in their expressions…hear it in their voices and even their laughter. They are home now, but they remember the names of their-fallen from the last tour…and the one before that…and know the dangers awaiting the upcoming tour only months away. They know without our saying that their-fallen is our-fallen too.

I think the SF Airmen of today have matured faster than we did. What I mean by that is that we came home from war, and for the majority of us we never returned to that war. These Airmen have been to the desert, returned home, and repeated that process two, three, and even four times. In between, they have had time alone to remember, to dream, to weep when no one is looking, and to love and deeply appreciate their loved ones and this great land of ours.

I am grateful their squadron commander can Name The Names, and can choke with emotion in full understanding of that loss, without shame or embarrassment, and in so doing lead the way by letting his warriors know it is okay to grieve amongst those who were there, and those who care for their own.

It took many of us years after our war just to recognize there was something unsettling within us… and to make that momentous link to Vietnam and Thailand. It has been an accelerated path of understanding for today’s SF Airmen, waiting for the next combat tour. Their focus is intense as life itself and the long sleepless nights where one is too wired and too certain of the future…a future as real as the memory of the quiet breathing of a sleeping spouse—a treasure to store away and remember when the coming night is darkest, and the enemy is close. It has not taken years for these SF Airmen to discover that something unsettling lingers within.

Many of the young Airmen I met at the reunion had faced and defeated the enemy…and it was clear they understood the price such here-and-there victories cost. I think they also understand what took me years to grasp that battles against an enemy may never go away from your heart, and can be a scar of both good and terrible memories for life. More importantly, they have quickly understood the merit of a brotherhood of peers, whereas it took us decades to find each other.

I was proud when three young men voiced their feelings that they could set down at any table of Vietnam War veterans at the VSPA reunion and feel a closeness and bond as real and strong as with their fellow Airmen…’you were there…and we are there now’. With that comment, I could not reply…could not voice a word, and not because I feared they would see an old man crying, but because I felt so humble and proud to be in their presence…I simply had no words to express the love and pride of brotherhood I felt for those young warriors and fellow defenders of our nation. We cannot fail them. There is a very real and living spirit of duty, honor, and country, instilled within them.

It has been our hope that what we did in Vietnam and Thailand could have real meaning if somehow it could help those who follow in the path we first trod. For me, there is no greater fulfillment of that hope than in today’s Defenders. Until the last man standing, we will be there for them, as they are for us. We will be remembered by our own, who will tell the next generation of SF Airmen about the honor and valor of those who came before them in Vietnam and Thailand.

    Welcome Home,

    Don Poss

Many members have expressed what a great time was had at the reunion. And we did have a great time but it didn't just happen. All of your elected board and appointed staff contributed to the success of our 15th Reunion, but there were several people who contributed significantly more time and effort than the rest of us, to the point that they shortchanged themselves in the process. Steve Garttis who contributed substantial time and effort before and during the reunion in ordering and presenting plaques as well as assisting in organizing, Van and Joyce Digby who had to pack, ship, unpack, set-up, sell, pack-up, ship home and unpack our BX merchandise before, during and after the reunion; Sheila Gervase-Cain who shows up before the reunion to buy snacks and drinks, and set up the AL Mathews Hospitality Room, and every day goes out on the events but returns to again set-up the hospitality room with iced drinks, snacks and stays until closing. Sheila is the waitrees, bartender, stocker, buyer, oragnizer and manager all in one; our photographers, Ken Hall and Tony Morris who are always busy taking photos of you eating and enjoying yourselves while they get those fantastic photos; Mike Douglas and Erkyce Pekas who spent a lot of time on the telephone and driving to make the golf tournament a success; Phil Carroll who as president of the Mayaguez Rememberance Committee spent a lot of time coordinating with the old and new 56th troops and presented some nice awards to the 56th SFS on behalf of the 56th SPS; Jack "The Old Cowboy" Smith who with new member Ricard Ball handled all the donated items which went to numerous VSPA members as well as some to the 56th SFS guests who were at our banquet; our Safeside members donated $500 dollars to the hospitality room which really helped Sheila to be able to provide some great treats; and also Don and Larry Poss who donated over $1,000 worth of large banners and flags which added to the attractiveness of our hospitality room reminding us of our heritage, and also they contributed numerous other articles of military paraphernalia for gifts to our members; and last but not least, Janet Matthews-Wise for her continuing efforts in awarding the Warrior's Medal of Valor. Finally there was that fine couple who are ardent supporters of the VSPA who donated $1,000 to the VSPA Scholarship. We will honor their request to remain anonymous. As in the past, Kim did a great job of coordinating our hotel accomodations."We Do Take Care of Our Own". Newell

Now back from our extended reunion/vacation I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the VSPA board, staff, members, volunteers & last but not least, Major Borders & the 56th SFS for making our 15th reunion in Phoenix a most memorable one. Now, being a Binh Thuy vet, it is most appropriate to send a shout out for the following BT’ers:
Lew Goldberg (Binh Thuy Liaison) - Thank you for organizing the Spaghetti Factory dinner and doing all you do in our behalf.
Steve Hall – What a great friend & wonderful photographer, I was up until 1:30 AM viewing the 550 + photos Steve uploaded to Photobucket.com, see links in his 11/15/09 post.
Erlyce Pekas – There is much history that predates VSPA & our friendship, some of it archived under VSPA.com stories & photos by myself & Duke Windsor. This was a journey that can only be described as fate when both Erlyce & Mom joined us (VSPA) for the a graveside memorial service & 10th Reunion in Tucson and the rest is history. Everyone who has come in contact with Erlyce & Mom Lehman at every reunion since Tucson knows that these are two extraordinary woman that we all, and especially the BT’ers, hold dear to our hearts.
Sheila Cain – You make Greg look good and all of us love you & appreciate your contributions.
Paul Shave – Check that rattle in your cane…..
Dennis Evans – Another big-time giver & probably noticed by the guy upstairs with the VSPA ring winning ticket.
Nelson Avery – So close (New Jersey) & yet so far away then where better to meet than at a VSPA reunion. Welcome Home Brother.

To ALL who attended, whether repeat or first timers, thanks for your contributions, stories & company. Hope to see you again next year in San Antonio.

Well, Jim Rasco, my wife, Gloria and I arrived back in Oklahoma City at 1700 hours (5pm) today (12 Oct) from our drive from Phoenix with a stopover in Albuquerque last night. First, I want to personally thank all the folks that were there and saw me receive the Warriors Medal of Valor. That was something that will always be very special to me because of all the other special folks that have received it too. Second, to all the guys that were there this year from Cam Ranh Bay AB, Bien Hoa AB and Phu Cat AB. Thanks for your support and our short time spent together again. Look forward for next years reunion in San Antonio. Pete

I want to thank you for your donations to Packages From Home both money and your time packing. You packed thirtyfive boxes and donated generiously $598.65 to continue this vital work.

We all know how precious it is to receive a package when we are far away from home.

I also appreciate the plaque/award that you gave to me. I was so very surprised and honored to receive it.

My cause is to make sure that the soldiers know how much we appreciate them and they will never experience what the Vietnam vets went through.

If you have the name and address of a VET currently in our war theaters, please let me know so they can be added to the list for Packages From Home.

Good Morning VSPA. Its 0756 zulu. We returned home from Az late last night. Our flight out was delayed 3 hours. Spending 2 extra days in Az to visit family was great. The best was visiting with all my brothers. Roberta and I met Richard and Pat Ball from Va. What a great couple they are. Its was their first reunion. We really enjoyed showing them some of the ropes. Everyone we met that we had known or just got to know as the best. They were some many people we now know that I can not list the all here. As always the reunion Brat and all the Officers show us all a wonderful time. The weather was great, just right..
The dinners, tours and just good old talk fests were tops as always. Roberta was elected to the postion of SisterHood Chaplin. She is so honored and proud to be able to serve this great group that takes care of us. One mpoint I would like to coment on is the Pink ticket raffle. Dennis Evens donated 3 Security Police badges and Ken Neal a set of new Badges and pins. The 3 items alone turned just over $800.00 for the club fund. What a great bunch of people you all are. So hope to see everyone in Texas and God bless you all. Jack the Old Cowboy Poet

Upon returning from our first VSPA reunion, we can only say how grateful we are to everyone for truly making us feel as though we had been a part of the past 14 Reunions. It might have been our first, but certainly won't be our last! I am proud to say I am from the 56th SP / NKP - Thailand (69-70), and felt as though I was home.

A specil thank you to (Edwin) Jack & Roberta Smith for going that extra mile to make us feel so welcome --- we have definitely made new friends. Everyone, not only the Smiths, made us feel welcome during the entire Reunion. I can't say enought about the programs, fellowship, friendships made, food, BX, information presented and hospitality room --- everything was beyond our greatest expectations.

The tour of Luke AFB was so appreciated, and seeing the young troops of today reminded me so much of us when we served during the Viet Nam War. The presentations at Luke AFB were touching to say the least, as were those made at the baqnquet ---- so emotional.

We truly do take care of our own. Looking forward to the 16th VSPA Reunion!

Really enjoyed the past 4 days. Been 'home' now for most of the day after the memorial services (we brought our RV down and are staying in Apache Junction, about 40 miles away). For the second year now the Reunion Brat cannot spell my name on my badge, so I'll wait until 2010 and see if it gets corrected. As expected, good stories, great company, sincere hosts (the SF folks at Luke AFB), and some very emotional moments. Can't think of anywhere I would have rather been. Maybe next year we can figure out how to open the sliding doors to the pool! Best BX setup I have seen yet, and I still spent too much. Oh well, I do every year. Hope all are home or enroute on time and safe.

Please make every effort to attend next year - it is better each year.

We have another awesome reunion behind us, okay, I have never been to one that wasn’t, and yes I am already looking forward to seeing you in San Antonio. I could fill up the server with all the good memories.

I left Phoenix bursting with pride for the VSPA and the current Security Forces. What a mutual admiration society! I won’t ever forget the pride on the faces of our members as they watched the Security Forces demonstration and talked to the troopes. I won't forget the awe on the faces of those young troops when they hear the history, their legacy, and meet those behind it.

Thank you for always making me and now my mama feel special. The few days of the year I get to spend with you, my family, are always therapeutic in so many ways.

This year you allowed me the privilege of standing with the Warriors Medal recipients. What an honor for me to present Medals of Valor to just a few of my heroes! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    We made Sarge proud.

Thank you for your service, see you next year, and Welcome Home!

P.S. somebody ask Phil Carroll about his reunion experience…woof

  • 2011 Reunion at WPAFB/Dayton, Ohio -- Pat Houseworth (Good News for the Midwest), Sun, Oct 11 2009, 6:28:31 PDT (cpe-98-28-33-191.columbus.res.rr.com/98.28.33.191)
Not to let the cat out of the bag...but what the heck?

2nd VP Don Hamilton has informed me that Dayton, Ohio, and Wright-Patterson AFB, have been chosen as the site of the 2011 VSPA Reunion. Great Choice Guys!

If some of you remember, we had the Reunion at Dayton back in 2002 and had a great time and turnout...of course I am biased, my wife and son are both Wright State Bachelor and Masters programs grads, and son Hal lives within 5 miles of the base. Lot's of VSPA and old Sky Cops are living in Southwest and west Ohio, Columbus, and Northern Kentucky, so that should secure a great turnout, again.

    2010____

Even with the great news above...don't forget VSPA 2010 in San Antonio...and for you guys in the Midwest{and Howard in Florida, and Sam in Virginia too}, don't forget we will be having our 2010 "Mini" Reunion at Dayton this coming March.

The Weekend of March 5th through 7th has been selected for this coming Mini. After the success of last year's event at the Air Force Museum at WPAFB....our plans are to make it a 3 day/2 night event for those wishing to stick around southwest Ohio in early March. Once again, it will be "fee free" with individuals and small groups setting their own agendas. Your costs will be only what you make them, food, travel, and lodging...we will be working on getting a selection of blocked rooms booked at a local motel close to the base and museum.

More details coming as plans unfold.

    Brothers-

Three bus loads of VSPA Members and Guests departed for Luke AFB with a AF Security Force Escort. Headed West on the freeway and seemed to take forever They rolled on and on till finally we were at the South Gate of Luke Field. A Security Force member got onto each bus and we entered with a red light escort. Traffic stopped and on we went, past the Flight Line to a meeting with the Lt. Col. Commander. As we entered we walked past dozens of Security Force Members each standing tall and shaking hands. Quickly it became known that some of the men/women were soon to depart on the third trip to war in the past four years.

In the reception hall, coffee and snacks were served and a presentation of what their task is and how it has changed. Back on the busses and a short trip to a gym to observe new training methods. This is nothing like we received in the day of night sticks and mace.

The next stop was a K-9 demonstration. Again not like we used to have but very much better. You could actually pet the Dogs.

Lunch was set in a hanger on the flight line. Static displays of weapons and vehicles with a Gigantic American Flag. Presentations of plaques to the troops and then a meet and greet with hand shakes all around. Impresive to say the least. They had an actual 38 revolver like we used to have. A relic from some dark gun locker I'd guess. I had forgotten how much noise a fighter on take off produces.

A final stop at the exchange for some and every one made it back to the hotel.

SATURDAY: meeting of the Membership and a final farewell dinner.

I'm home, back to my "real life" after spending the past five days at the VSPA Reunion here in Phoenix. Another wonderful and successful reunion, full of fun, laughter yet laced with emotion and serious moments as well. The memorial service Sunday morning was somber and emotional but SO great....we were asked to express what the reunion meant to us, and I think I froze when I stood up. Following is what I meant to say!!

"This weekend, someone asked me WHY do I do this? Why do I come to these reunions year after year, when I am married to a non-military person and my loss occured so many years ago? She said to me, "I mean no disrespect, but he was ONLY your fiancee'". I really thought about that, and my answer is simple. I come to support.

Within that category, I come for many reasons. I attend primarily to support Mom Lehman, who has been part of my life for 44 years since I was an 18 year old girl. I support an 87 year old woman who lost her son.....a woman who says that attending these reunions are the highlight of her year, and helps her keep the memory of her son alive. She is as much a real mom to me as my own mother, and I know many of you feel the same way about her. She loves you all! If you haven't met her, introduce yourself to her next year....she will gather you under her wing and you will soon find out how very special she is.

I also attend for me, because whatever I may have to give or provide, I get back 10-fold. If I can be a listening ear for even one person, who, for whatever the reason, finds that I am someone who will listen intently with understanding and be a non-judgemental sounding board for them, then it's worth it. I don't pretend to KNOW what you went through, but I will listen, and I will always be there for you, always. You can depend on it. You are my brothers in every sense of the word.

I attend the reunion in support of the Sisterhood; it's exhilarating to share information, listen to stories, to tell a few and to be among other women who understand. The first time I met Joyce Digby at the 2004 Reunion in Tucson, she said to me, "You lived through what we all feared". That statement has stuck with me, and it's formed a bond between me and my VSPA sisters. I may not completely understand the men's stories, (although I try) but I certainly can identify with the women who knew their husbands at the time of the Vietnam war. Their men may have come home, but they will forever carry emotional scars and wounds that do not show.

I come to watch the "young pups" as they watch and listen to you Vietnam Veterans with nothing short of hero worship in their eyes. Being around them gives me hope for our future....they are so dedicated, so patriotic, so caring. It makes me very proud!

Lastly, I come to honor the memory of Lee, and of the other 110 sky cops who did not return. He really did give the ultimate sacrifice for his country, and he deserves to be remembered. Once a year, I have the opportunity to do that. I have an understanding husband and family who encourage me in this endeavor, and I am grateful for that.

I am so grateful that the VSPA has "adopted" me and made me one of their own. It is an honor and a privilege."

Thank you. God willing, we will see one another same time, next year.

    Hugs, Erlyce

I got home late last night from yet another great Reunion. I leave these Reunions with mixed emotions. It is always so good to renew old friendships and make new ones. It is great to go out and associate with the young Pups and see in their eyes, the same eagerness that was in ours, so many years ago. The Reunions are great, up until someone says something like, "do you remember the night...?" Even if the story turns out to be something comical or heart-warming, those words, "do you remember the night" always opens the possibility of reopening an old wound. I have told my PTSD Counselors that those 5 little words are my stressors. Does anyone else have the same problem?

By the way, I will be happy some day when somebody uses those words in a different manner. When they say, "Do you remember the night when Al Handy received the Warrior's Medal of Valor?" It is something I will never forget and I applaud all who had a hand in correcting a wrong that existed for 44 years. I am so glad his family was there to see Al be called a Hero by his Brothers. VSPA truly takes care of its own.

DETROIT -- Hummer, the off-road vehicle that once epitomized America's love for hulking trucks, is now in the hands of a Chinese heavy equipment maker.
General Motors Co. and Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Corp. finally signed the much-anticipated deal for GM to sell the brand on Friday.
Tengzhong will get an 80 percent stake in the company, while Hong Kong investor Suolang Duoji, who indirectly owns a big stake in Tengzhong through an investment company, will get 20 percent. The investors will also get Hummer's nationwide dealer network.
Financial terms were not disclosed, although a person briefed on the deal said the sale price was around $150 million. The person did not want to be identified because the terms were being kept private. GM's bankruptcy filing last summer said that the brand with military roots could bring in $500 million or more.

The day began with a very early golf tee off time. As this is written there is no word on the winners. It was a sunny and warm day with highes just over mid-eighties.

There was also a large portion of the day devoted to shopping at a mall and a good time was had by all who went.

Others went to see the Heard Museum of the Southwest cultures. Several brothers got winded from walking around see the displays but no one seemed to complain too much.

A very few Brothers went to pack boxes for the troops in the sand wars, 3 brothers and two from the sister hood. They were tired after 2 hours but packed 35 boxes for our fighting men overseas.

Others took the train and hit the rails to see the sights around Phoenix. A rumor surfaced that a select few had gone to one of the local casinos to gamble. Nothing can be confirmed so it's just a rumor. As expected the Hospitality Room was open and the place was jumping with stories and friendship.

Friday is the trip to Luke AFB. There will be three buses going and it should be a great time. Pictures??????

A photograph of Major Ruth Sidisin and her story. Then look specifically at the last paragraph.

    ***********************************************************

My most treasured memory of my tour in Viet-Nam is of the valor and courage of our American Servicemen--their selflessness, comradeship and brotherhood. My special favorites were the Enlisted men and Officers of the 377th Security Police. I became the "Mom" to the 368 men guarding the base perimeter at night. Every night, I would wave them off to work either perched on this Rat Bait Box outside my room or from the 2nd floor veranda, sometimes with the help of other Nurses or WAF. My sons would ride by in their trucks, jeeps, tanks or Armored personnel Carriers in fair weather or Monsoon rains to protect us... On Mother's Day they presented me with a beautiful bouquet of pink gladioli on their way to work. One night they surprised me by naming one of the mini-gun tanks after me...

    ***********************************************************

I found her by searching google search for "Tan Son Nhut" nurse wave mom.

    Persistenace definitely pays off.

The story was being told by a Col.(I think) and a retired TSgt. I'm not sure of details becfause I only caught some of it on the History Channel around 9:30pm--10:pm. I believe the Colonel's name was Hall and the TSgt's was Nevell. Immediately after the incident it was classifief Top Secret but must have been down graded since as they were talking freely. They even showee a plaster cas of the place where it landed.
I was just wondering if anyone saw the program or knows anything about it.

After the escort Thursday I went on down the road and spent Friday and Saturday Morning with the kids in NC but when I got back to the Wall this afernoon I was told half the school kids in the county were bussed out to the site Friday and the other Half would be comming out Monday. I was told there were over 2 thousand elememntry age school kids there Friday , they were expecting the same amount of middle and high school kids Monday , they were asking a lot of questions about Vietnam and the names that were on the Wall. .
I was also told there were many visitors to the Wall the last 2 days and nites including many Vietnam Veterans some who had visited it for the first time and broke down during their visit.
Thats why its called the "Healing Wall" sam

I also want to thank the Mr. Roger Baker my county service officer and the VFW who helped me with all the paperwork. Today I received my 100% rating from the VA. I want all of you to know that you MUST keep after them to get your due. My county officer and VFW have worked on this since April of 2008. I do not want to have this cancer but at least the VA is now going increase my compensation. They stated also that my cancer and diabetes is from exposure to herbicide. So all of you still waiting do not stop praying and keep after the VA. God Bless you all. Jack The Old Cowboy Poet

As many of you know, Safeside lost a Brother just over a week ago when Lt Col Claude P. "Red" Guran was killed in a traffic accident, while returning from the Safeside Reunion. Red had been on the road for almost 20 hours, when he apparently went to sleep at the wheel and hit an Interstate bridge abutment head-on at cruising speed. He was killed instantly. I don't know if he made any rest stops in that 20 hours, but if he did, they were probably just meal and restroom breaks.

Hopefully, this tragic loss will remind all of us going to the Reunion that we aren't 20 years old any more...no longer 10-feet tall and bullet proof. Most of us take a number of medications, any of which might decrease our alertness or cause drowsiness. Please drive safely and don't try to stretch your driving time, just to save a few bucks on the cost of a hotel room.

Time to start the ONLINE REUNION. Here is a poem I just wrote for the reunion. Hope you like it. Now you guys not going to AZ keep this online reunion going. Jack the Old Cowboy Poet

    VSPA REUNION 2009

The October Arizona sun rose hot
We gather from a old war we had fought
In a far away land for reasons not understood
A trying time that took away our boyhood

We left behind in the grave so many
Who met the final call so bravely
We the living to them now pay our homage
To brothers who’s faces are now just a fading image

Joined once again our numbers are fewer
Each fleeing moment we now hold dearer
Seeking for all friendship and peace
Talking of fears we have looking for a release

For these few days that again we meet
In this desert land with tree’s of mesquite
Hugs Tears and Cheers will flow naturally
As we stand again as those who served proudly

Old friends and new will be found
As stories and tales of now and than abound
Of the time we spent long ago doing our duty
Now to rejoice with glee for serving our country

    Forty Year Good-byes

It doesn’t seem that long ago
    We said our last farewell
And promised that we’d stay in touch.
I guess we all meant well

But time can change so many things
    And make us drift away
From all those special ties that bind
    And thoughts of yesterday.

So when I looked upon your face
    And realized forty years
Had slipped away without one word
    I couldn’t hold my tears

There was a time we’d march through hell
    And never bat an eye
Today we share a warm embrace,
    Both unashamed to cry.

The bonds of combat last for life
    Some spoken, some implied
    They even outlast faded names
    And forty year good-byes

    Howard G. Yates

  • Submitting Stories and Photos -- Don Poss, Sun, Oct 04 2009, 16:01:52 PDT (cpe-75-82-158-38.socal.res.rr.com/75.82.158.38)
    Gents:

I am receiving about 20-30 new photos daily for the Gates/Towers/Heavy Weapons project. I also receive several inquiries about how to go about sending in a story or photos. Here's how to get your story/photos posted ASAP:

Please review How to Submit stories and photos at http://www.vspa.com/aspprotect/vspa-submit.asp

    Read it again.

This guideline really does help me post things. Most guys have a ton of photos and send in a half dozen photos of themselves mugging in front different sandbags. Posed photos are okay, but unposed are better. The point is, be selective and chose your best photos. When there are similar photos, select the best representative photo and include a few words describing what is in the photo. Don't worry about not remembering everyone's names...it's been forty years.

Do not resize, colorize, or optimize your photos. Do not try to ‘help’ me improve the photos. Sometimes I will enlarge a small section of interest for a second photo.

If you have a favorite photo that is in very poor condition, send it anyway and tell me it is special to you. I can fix or improve most images.

I am looking forward to seeing what you have. And no, there is no deadline for submitting photos. They will be added to the projects as soon as possible. Currently, there is a lot of interest in the photo-project, and everyone will enjoy what you send.

I guess I encourage photos and stories to be sent without delay because of the memory of a member submitting his story and photos, only to learn that he died that very night. Suppose he had waited just one more day…? His story would be lost. Instead, it has been posted with VSPA now for several years. I want all the stories and all the photos posted. It's for those SF Airmen who come after us, so they will know what we did together.

We had some guys that were able to leave earlier than planned. I think it was about 50 days. Boy were they glad. I can't imagine the relief. I know of the anxiety and stress they missed out on but was glad for them then and still partly because at the time I thought maybe Uncle Sam might do the same for me which didn't happen. (Of course those who left due to injuries or worse also left early but not in a way that made anyone glad) Just was wondering how many fortunate guys got the lucky ticket and how you felt about it. I would even love to have left a day or a week early..As far as extending that is a topic for another day.

I have a friend that was a nurse at Tan Son Nhut AB in 1968. She remembers a Major that lived on the second floor of the barracks. She belongs to a group of Viet Nam Nurses and is going to try and get her name. She could not remember her name but is sure that someone in the group will remember. All she could remember was that the Major used to cook for some of them on her electric skillet in her room and when they had to run for cover during an attack the Major was old and slow. When we were 19 or 20 we thought everyone over 35 was old. I will let you know what I find out.

    Dear friends,

The VSPA Reunion is nearly upon us, and I can tell from emails and posts on the VSPA Bulletin Board that excitement is building! It will be so good to see all of you again, and to meet new friends.

This post is directed to those of you who have registered and paid to particpate in the VSPA Golf Tournament at Falcon Dunes Thursday morning, Oct. 8.

VSPA President Newell Swartz and Tournament Organizer Michael Douglas have asked me to email participants two letters concerning the golf tournament you have registered for. I have sent the email, and attached a "Welcome Letter" from the staff at Falcon Dunes Golf Course, as well as a copy of their rules and regulations.

Those of you who have registered, please check your personal email. If you cannot open either of the documents, contact me and I'll try it another way.

From the sounds of it, this golf tournament promises to be great fun! Our hot Phoenix summer is finally fading away to much more comfortable temperatures, and the high for Oct. 8 is predicted to be 88 degrees, so I think you will really enjoy the course, to say nothing of the camaraderie you will enjoy with your fellow VSPA members. And of course, remember, it's a "dry heat"!! :)

The buses will load for Falcon Dunes at 0530 sharp on Thursday morning, Oct. 8 outside the front doors of our hotel. There is a restaurant at Falcon Dunes that serves breakfast, and this departure time will allow about 30 minutes to have breakfast there. (The restaurant at the Crown Plaza Hotel doesn't open until 6am). If you are a light or "no" breakfast person, the extra time at Falcon will give you an opportunity to practice.) Even though your eyelids may disagree with you, don't be late! Falcon Dunes is a good 35-40 minute drive in good conditions from our hotel, and they want us sitting in the carts ready to go by 0700 or so.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me or Michael Douglas. For those of you ON THE FENCE, It's not too late to register; when you check in at the hotel, ask for more information about the golf tournament.

Meeting and seeing all of you at the yearly VSPA Reunion has become, for me, a highlight of my year. We look forward to seeing you in just a few days, and we welcome you to the desert we call home!

The Heavy Weapons photo project is moving right along. 215 photos received so far...some are simply incredible! Quad-50s, mini-guns, gatlin guns, mortars... and some really fantastic photos. However, some bases are completely blank for Heavy Weapons photos, such as Cam Ranh Bay for one.

This project includes Heavy Weapons, Mortars, crew-served weapons, tracks, QRTs, M113, V100, shoulder-weapons, M60s, .50cal, captured enemy weapons, and anything you thing qualifies for a HW.

Sorry fellow doggies...K-9 are not a part of this current project...that would be weapons of mass destruction?
