    Ladies and Gents,

Please join me in congratulating VSPA's newest Life Member, Fred Trainor. Just by the luck of timing, Fred gets Life Membership Number 555 - Triple Nickel. Fred's been a member for about a year and a half, and lives in California. He served at Korat in 1965-66.

Out of curiosity just now I looked up the Air Force's Triple Nickel fighter squadron and learned that they were in Thailand for years, including the time that Fred spent there although at different bases. They were so effective with their F-4's their motto became "World's Largest Distributor of MiG Parts." I got this from a fact sheet about them at: http://www.aviano.af.mil/library/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=4353

    Congratulations, Fred, and Welcome Home!

I left Viet Nam in mid 1966 and just attended the 23 all Vets reunion in Melbourne Fla..my first ever Nam reunion.
Brothers allow me to tell you that to attend is a way to be reborn..my god it was wonderful. 35,000 Brothers and others enjoying life.
My highlight was amazing..I was in the Security Police Camp and a red jeep pulled up, the driver called to me.."Do you know where ted is?" I told him and turned to walk away..I then heard "Joe is that you"? The driver was Bob Johns, we had served together in Nam 65/66 at Bien Hoa and DaNang and have not seen each other since coming home..but theres more...we chatted and he asked "what have you done in life since then"? I told him I was a Police Officer in Daytona Fla and have retired..he told me he was with the Fla Highway Patrol also in Daytona(across the street from DBPD), we also found out that we lived within 3/4 of a mile from each other.
Amazing.! durning the week at the reunion I was recognized by 3 guys who asked if I had been an Instructor at Lackland..I said yes at AP/SP tech school and at Camp Bullis..all three said they thought so and remembered me by sight anyway.(guess I made an impression)
Brothers let me tell you this..going to an all vets reunion is a MUST that you have to accomplish before we all have that final Guardmount...there is no way to describe all that went on, the ghosts that I put to rest and the feeling of brotherhood experienced.
I would be remiss if I did nt mention Ted Whitlock with VSPA, that guy is the hardest worker I have ever met, an all around great guy and the man who convinced me to attend the reunion....I will attend each reunion until they close the lid on my casket.
Hope to see you all in Arizona and here in Fla next April at the next Reunion
    In Brotherhood

Ron Eberhart posted a good question in response to one of my new member introductions yesterday. He wanted to know exactly how many members VSPA actually has now.

Well, after consulting the Wizard behind the curtain (Webmaster Don Poss) I'm pleased to be able to announce that VSPA has 1,269 active members.

Not too shabby, especially if you consider that there are always a handful who are late on their dues by a month or three or five, so the real total is even a little better than that.

    Welcome Home, Brothers!

For anyone who was with the 6th Combat Defense Squadron at Walker AFB, Roswell N.M. Minnesota to Honor all Vietnam Era Veterans
SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Veterans organizations from around the state and the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs are teaming up for what is expected to be the largest Vietnam Veteran event in Minnesota History.
Thousands of Veterans, families, friends and supporters are expected to gather June 13 on the Minnesota State Capitol Grounds to honor and remember all Veterans who served during the Vietnam era.
Sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, this event is designed to unite the Minnesota community in support, gratitude and celebration of the brave men and women who served during the Vietnam War era.
Over the decades, the state of Minnesota has taken steps to recognize those who served. A Vietnam Veterans memorial was dedicated in 1997, and in 2008, legislation creating a state Vietnam Veterans Day was signed into law by Governor Pawlenty. In this tradition, the Minnesota Honors Vietnam Era Veterans celebration will continue to unite Veterans and the community.
“This is a day to celebrate Vietnam era Veterans,” said Clark Dyrud, Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs. “We need to recognize those who have served, and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature guest speakers, period music, Vietnam memorabilia, food, Vietnam Veteran reunions and more. A replica of the National Vietnam Memorial will also be on display. For more information about this event, visit www.mnhonorsvietnamvets.org.

I just ran across a page where names can be submitted who died as a result of service in Nam due to PTSD, Agent Orange, etc. There is a form you can download. I thought of our former president, Mike Daost, and I know there must be others in our career field to have died due to our service there. I don't know how legitimate it is but the website is http://www.vvmf.org/index.cfm?SectionID=8.

    Gents & Ladies:

I have received hundreds of personal emails from members and families, and Vietnam Veterans from all services, concerning my recent story, "Catch The Wind." It is gratifying to know that what I feel in my heart is also felt by many, when thinking of the war and the cost of that war then and now. In a way, I think that is one reason our association shares an unbreakable bond of brotherhood, because we are all standing together in support of one another. That is a gift worth giving and receiving, and treasuring for a lifetime...which began decades ago in Vietnam, and Thailand, and will endure to the last man standing.

Because of the many requests for copies of "Catch The Wind" I have added a PDF download link at the story. If you want, you can copy, paste, and print from this url:

Today, when I arrived home, I found a rather large package waiting for me. My wife watched as I opened it with great anticipation. Removing the wrappings revealed the most beautiful print I have ever seen. The title of the print was “The Line of Duty”. I was moved to tears to think a VSPA brother would present me with such a treasure. I am intentionally not mentioning his name here, for I know he wanted it to be just between two Vietnam Brothers. Thank you my Brother…..From the bottom of my heart, Thank You.

Got to hear "Living on the Edge" by Aerosmith twice yesterday. First when I viewed the USAF tribute that Chief Gary recommended. It was part of the sound track to the slide show tribute and very effective. Later, as I cruised on my day job, the I got a booster dose as the Aerosmith ode came up on the classic rock station. The song has new meaning as it will trigger the images from the tribute. I been sublimanitized (SACisized).
Same same effect as when I view the 822nd CD I got in '05.
Gary, I can't help to imagine what Suth woulda done with this media at his disposal. Ya gotta wonder?
Goes to show the power of music to enhance life experiences. A song will take you back to where you were then, or fix this moment to memory. Awesome!
As in Don's reference to Dylan's "Catch the Wind" in his awesome speculative reflection. I got to catch up with his narrative yesterday as well. Very well done.
Like the man said, I read the book and it told more about the author, than the subject.
And so, it will help in my counseling, cause I will just show it to my counselor, and say "What he said.."
Thanks Don, for articulating the feelings in such a way, for maximum effect. Hawk

  • — Leo Thorsness is author of Surviving Hell: A POW's Journey, from which this chapter is excerpted. -- Bob Hubbard, Mon, Apr 13 2009, 13:49:35 PDT (nc-76-5-184-170.dhcp.embarqhsd.net/76.5.184.170)
    ‘Our Father’
Praying like you have never prayed before.

    By Leo Thorsness

Sunday morning at the Hanoi Hilton was church time. To gather our “congregation,” the Senior Ranking Officer (SRO) tapped “cc,” quietly on his wall. Each cell in turn tapped “cc,” and soon all have been alerted to Church Call. The service was a prayer and a reciting of Bible verses. If I was lucky, I was in a cell with one or two other POWs, and we could pool our knowledge of the Bible.

A failed rescue attempt led to the most memorable of our church experiences. It happened on November 20, 1970, when U.S. Special Forces staged a mission to rescue the POWs believed to be at Son Tay, one of the small prisons the North Vietnamese maintained outside Hanoi. The raid was brilliantly planned and executed perfectly. Our men landed at the prison in helicopters and came home without the loss of a single American. There was only one problem: All the POWs had been moved out of Son Tay about four months before the rescue effort so none of us went back with our rescuers. The mission still turned out to be a huge success for us, however.

Realizing that such rescue attempts could happen again, the North Vietnamese brought us in from outlying prison camps into the main Hoa Lo prison in Hanoi: the Hanoi Hilton. Within hours of the raid, we were moved into large cells — 43 of us in my cell. It was the greatest day of our prison life. For the first time, we were meeting POWs whose names we had memorized years earlier. Many of us had formed intense friendships through the tap code with men we’d never seen. As we met that night, “So this is what you look like” was heard over and over throughout the cell.

We compared our treatment, and it seemed important to each of us to tell one another of our torture experiences. I’ve never seen more empathy in anyone’s eyes than when telling a fellow POW about being tortured. We each needed to tell our torture story — once. We never told them again to the same POW.

The handshakes, back slapping, and bear hugs went on and on. Some of us had been tortured for the protection or benefit of a “tap-code buddy.” Now there was love and respect to be repaid. No one slept that first night; too much joy, excitement, and talk. The next morning, we needed to determine the SRO. The highest rank in our cell was O-4, which is a major. (“O” stands for officer, so O-1 is second lieutenant or ensign, O-2 first lieutenant, O-3 captain, O-4 major, O-5 lieutenant colonel, O-6 colonel, O-7 brigadier general, and on up to O-10 for a four-star general.) We put all the O-4s together and then compared the date when the rank was attained and arrived at a hierarchy. We did the same with the O-3s, the O-2s, and the O-1s. When we were done, all 43 of us knew exactly where we stood in the command structure.

Our SRO turned out to be Ned Shuman — a really good Naval aviator. The first Sunday in the large cell, someone said, “Let’s have church service.” Good idea, we all agreed. One POW volunteered to lead the service, and we started gathering in the other end of the long rectangular cell from the cell door. No sooner had we gathered than an English-speaking Vietnamese officer who worked as an interrogator burst into the cell with a dozen armed guards. Ned Shuman went to the officer and said there wouldn’t be a problem; we were just going to have a short church service.

The response was unyielding: We were not allowed to gather into groups larger than three persons and we absolutely could not have a church service.

During the next few days we all grumbled that we should not have backed down in our intention to have a church service and ought to do it the coming Sunday. Toward the end of the week, Ned stepped forward and said, “Are we really committed to having church Sunday?”

There was a murmuring of assent throughout the cell. Ned said, “No, I want to know person by person if you are really committed to holding church.”

We all knew the implications of our answer: If we went ahead with the plan, some would pay the price — starting with Ned himself because he was the SRO. He went around the cell pointing to each of us individually. “Leo, are you committed?” “Yes.” Ned then moved to Jim and asked the same question. “Yes,” Jim responded. And so on until he had asked each of us by name.

When the 42nd man said yes, it was unanimous. We had 100-percent commitment to hold church next Sunday. At that instant, Ned knew he would end up in the torture cells at Heartbreak. It was different from the previous Sunday. We now had a goal, and we were committed. We only needed to develop a plan.

Sunday morning came, and we knew they would be watching us again. Once more, we gathered in the far end of the cell. As soon as we moved together, the interrogator and guards burst through the door. Ned stepped forward and said there wouldn’t be a problem: We were just going to hold a quiet ten-minute church service and then we would spread back out in the cell. As expected, they grabbed Ned and hauled him off to Heartbreak for torture.

Our plan unfolded. The second ranking man, the new SRO, stood, walked to the center of the cell and in a clear firm voice said, “Gentlemen,” our signal to stand, “the Lord’s Prayer.” We got perhaps halfway through the prayer, when the guards grabbed the SRO and hauled him out the door toward Heartbreak.

As planned, the number three SRO stood, walked to the center of the cell, and said, “Gentlemen, the Lord’s Prayer.” We had gotten about to “Thy Kingdom come” before the guards grabbed him. Immediately, the number four SRO stood: “Gentlemen, the Lord’s Prayer.”

I have never heard five or six words of the Lord’s Prayer — as far as we got before they seized him — recited so loudly, or so reverently. The interrogator was shouting, “Stop, stop,” but we drowned him out. The guards were now hitting POWs with gun butts and the cell was in chaos.

The number five ranking officer was way back in the corner and took his time moving toward the center of the cell. (I was number seven, and not particularly anxious for him to hurry.) But just before he got to the center of the area, the cell became pin-drop quiet.

In Vietnamese, the interrogator spat out something to the guards, they grabbed number five SRO and they all left, locking the cell door behind them. The number six SRO began: “Gentlemen, the Lord’s Prayer.” This time we finished it.

Five courageous officers were tortured, but I think they believed it was worth it. From that Sunday on until we came home, we held a church service. We won. They lost. Forty-two men in prison pajamas followed Ned’s lead. I know I will never see a better example of pure raw leadership or ever pray with a better sense of the meaning of the words.

Ceremony recognizes vets not eligible for Vietnam Wall

WASHINGTON (AFRNS) -- One-hundred twenty-three American heroes from the Vietnam War era will be honored posthumously this month during the annual In Memory Day ceremony, according to Jan C. Scruggs, founder and president of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.

In Memory Day was created to pay tribute to those who died prematurely from noncombat injuries and emotional suffering caused directly by the Vietnam War, but who are not eligible to have their names inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

A list of the honorees and their hometowns is available at www.vvmf.org/index.cfm?SectionID=774.

The 11th annual In Memory Day ceremony begins at 10 a.m. April 20 at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial here. Nearly 1,000 family members, friends and fellow veterans are expected to visit the nation's capital to participate in this year's event.

"In Memory Day allows The Wall to do what it does best: provide a healing environment for family members and friends," Mr. Scruggs said. "It also allows all of us to pay tribute to these brave Americans who served and sacrificed for their country."

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial bears the names of 58,260 men and women who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces in the Vietnam War.

"The Department of Defense developed specific parameters that allow only the names of servicemembers who died of wounds suffered in combat zones to be added to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial," Mr. Scruggs said. "The In Memory program recognizes those men and women who have died prematurely as a result of the Vietnam War, but who do not meet the criteria. Many of their deaths are a result of Agent Orange exposure and emotional wounds that never healed."

During the ceremony, family members will read aloud their loved ones' names in chronological order by date of death. Following the ceremony, participants will lay tributes at the base of The Wall corresponding to the honorees' dates of service in Vietnam. With the addition of this year's honorees, more than 1,800 people have been honored in the In Memory Honor Roll.

Established in 1979, the nonprofit Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund was authorized by Congress to build the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Since then, the memorial fund has evolved into an international nongovernmental organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of The Wall, promoting healing and educating about the impact of the Vietnam War.

Its initiatives include educational programs, a traveling Wall replica that honors veterans and a humanitarian and land mine-removal program in Vietnam. The fund also is building The Education Center at The Wall, an underground educational facility near the memorial. (Courtesy of American Forces Press Service)

  • Remember? -- Ron Eberhart LM / 047 (Old Times), Sat, Apr 11 2009, 8:02:10 PDT (adsl-99-21-183-200.dsl.covlil.sbcglobal.net/99.21.183.200)
Guys--------A buddy of mine and I were talking with some 20-somethings about life when we were kids. I mentioned we had no TV at our house (I'm 62). They were stunned. They didn't think there was anyone still alive who had no TV in their home.
I told them that eventually my neighbor's dad bought a little black and white. We ran over to his house every Saturday to watch cartoons and westerns (Lone Ranger, Cisco Kid, Wild Bill Hickock , Captain Midnight, Sky King, Roy Rogers, & Buster Brown show with Andy Devine and Froggy the Gremlin).
They sat looking at us as though we were fragile antiques. Then my buddy went even further. He came from a large Catholic family and lived on the edge of town. He said when he was a kid they had no indoor plumbing. This even surprised me 'cause I always had indoor plumbing.
We didn't have all the 'things' they have today but we sure were happy. Things were slow-paced. On summer vacation or weekends we would get the guys together and play a nice game of 'Indian' ball. That game is long since gone and forgotten. We stayed out and played all day and evening. We knew to come in when the street-lights went on.
Things are too hectic today. I pity these kids who must live their lives and raise kids in this vulgar culture.
Both must work full-time jobs to fend off the bill collector and get on the treadmill while the government helps themselves to 50% of their hard-earned money.
In many ways I wish we could slow it down again. It was the golden age of life in America.

  • Help from VA? -- Ron Arthur LM 107, Sun, Mar 01 2009, 12:09:37 PST (cache-dtc-aa12.proxy.aol.com/205.188.116.16)
I was wondering if any of you brothers from the war know who I would contact within the VA to get help in saving my farm from foreclosure? I have lived on this farm for over 40 years and hosted three reunions for the guys I served with. I love this place but got myself in a pickle. I have a good income from Social Security and 100% from PTSD. But was offered a deal of a lifetime. The company I delt with (and I will not name, but has been in the news a bunch lately) offered to pay off all my bills and even give me some extra. I thought it was an outstanding offer and took it. This small farm was left to me when both of my parents passed on. I went into a limbo for three years following Mom's passing and woke up this past June. I weighed 210 pounds and started working my behind off on this farm. Hard work too alone I might add. This past Christmas at my old lady friends house I weighed in at 150 pounds and know I have lost even more.I wished the financial institution that gave me this good deal would use survalance photos just to see how much work I have done to this farm. I know I made the deal and am not trying in anyway of getting out of it. I took the deal but I also did home improvements to it to upgrade it and make it livable. I am so proud of having a home of my own and if it is possible to find out from anyone out there just who I can make contact with (within the VA) and help me save it. My father told me taking my own life was wrong and God would frown on it. But, I might add there have been many times I have picked up my Glock and thought that would be the easy way out.I hate to think of myself setting in a homeless shelter and thinking there was something I could do. Can you help me, please?

I just started looking for the name of a former PJ who I think served as the SP 1st Sgt at Lowry AFB around 81 or 82. I think Mike Bush (and perhaps Steve Ray, if they were stationed at Lowry much later) would have found much more in common with (from posts back around 1997, I think) I'm still amazed at what the 377th guys were able to do with so little experience (from my time there, as a weather equipment repairman) during Tet '68. With some help from a Mickey Peruzzi (SP?) a QRT leader that first night at TSN, we came up with some information to share with Keith William Nolan (so recently deceased). Everyone had different views of the action, but Keith captured much of the personal stories, adding reality as the individuals saw it, without making the heroes seem too perfect. The imperfections were recognized but treated more gently and completely than I think I've seen from any other authors. Stephen Ambrose may be the model but I suspect his stories are perhaps less accurate (allowed to simmer over decades) than some cold hearted historians would have us believe. I think both of them told stories that revealed more of the common soldiers' personal contributions, foibles, and the effects on them. WWII's Ernie Pyle was always another hero in my parent's house for his stories of everyday GIs, my interest enhanced later by serving with his nephew.

My immediate areas of interest that you might be able to help with are:

The name of the Lowry SP SMSgt who was a former Vietnam PJ. Super attitude in maintaining order if not strict play by rules and an incredible save of a drunk airman (passed out, heart and breathing stopped) all without the General visiting our NCO Academy Grad meeting catching on to what had transpired a few minutes before (at least he didn't let on that he knew anything about it).

Any info on Duane Hackney touring with a team, perhaps including Viktor Belenko that gave classified briefings at Lowry or Westover (among other places). I recall talking to a visiting, very much decorated, PJ at one or both places but my mild propoganosia (didn't recognize my own brother once) keeps me from positively saying it was Hackney.

Son of an earlier AP 1st shirt,

    Jim Young

May all of you have a safe and joyful Easter weekend. I will say a prayer for all that might be traveling during this time and all staying at home. Prayers help. I know because of all that were sent my way not only helped with my cancer. It also helped me by knowing that so many people I have never met were pulling for me. Thank all of you and may God Bless and keep you and yours in his grace. Jack The Old Cowboy Poet

    Brothers-

I have been able to return Home from my lengthly stay in the Hospital. It seemed for some time that the longer I was in their care, the sicker I was becoming. Heart, Lungs, Kidneys were falling just like dominios. There was a point when we said what else can go wrong.

There was an angel I married named Missy and as a wife of nearly 41 years is prone to do, she called in the reinforcements. She called Newell and the flood was on with well wishes, prayers and e-mails. Many of those that I did not know; well that could have been the drugs; responded. I am slowely recovering because of 6 great Doctors and hundreds of prayes and thoughts from the greatest group; You; The Members of the VSPA!

I have more holes poked in me, drains, surgery, bruses and there are places that hurt that I didn't know I had. I am wounded but on light duty for some weeks. Still looking forward to the Reunion in October.

Thanks you each and all for your prayers; it made the difference.

    Don Hamilton

    George,

I guess we were there at the same time. Did you cross-train from CE to AP? I worked Air Police Security/K9 while I was there. What I was looking for is the K9 patch we wore when I was there. I don't guess you would have one, but thanks for the reply anyway.

    Hey You'all,
Good news today about Va funding & record transfers.I got an e-mail from the Iraq Veterans'web site. The White House & the new VA Chief(General Shiniski, not sure of correct spelling)announced that Military Records will now be electronically transferred from DOD to the VA in some new streamlined process eliminating all the bureaucratic Fu-k ups that caused so many problems for Iraq & Afganistan Vets. They also said that VA funding was not going to be like in the past. They plan to fund all the VA medical Medical programs in advance eliminating delays in diagnosis & care. White House & Va say this has top priority.
    Good News,
    JP Coakley, Bien Hoa-Pleiku 65'-66'
