I have recently read several articles and each seemed to have their own definition of what a combat veteran is. Im not sure at times if I should even refer to myself as one, as I was only involved in a few incidents of rocket attacks, and some small arms fire. I would ask you guys for your input on this subject. PS Im not trying to stire up things here but just want some opinions from others who were SPs. Thanks!

Mybe it's my age and memory giving me problems but why was it impossible for us to have an air conditioner back then? I mean after the guys in the tents built us nice hooches? Was it because they were so expensive and not on the market so long back in the late sixties and early seventies? It would have given us a whole different experience with all the down time don't you think??

I think we have all watched so many war movies growing up that alot of it did not compare to our experience. Each war is different and many times the mission of each branch of service is different. I knew an A.F.k9 man who misrepresented himself to the news media and made up fantastic tales because he thot his experience wasn't good enough. I told him he was wrong and needed to tell the truth. The truth was we had a difficult job just the way it was. Take pride in it. You get combat pay for being in a combat zone. No it wasn't D-Day or trench warfare but it was our war. Now a bunch of brave people are fighting their war for us. God Bless them...We do not have to embellish the truth. The truth is good enough.

    Gents:

The response to the Gates, Towers and Bunkers project has been absolutely tremendous! Steve Gattis suggested the project in 1998 (I told you I was backlogged), and it is paying off.

Gates: Gates for bases up to Nha Trang (in alpha order) are completed. No problem to add the late comer's photos, so keep sending photos as you find them.

Towers & Bunkers: There are some truely amazing photos, including Starlight Night scope photos! Most of the early towers did not have lightning-rods attached. But you can tell when we lost one or two SPs to lighting strikes because they all have them thereafter. When you look out from a tower over an M60 and toward the treeline...you can't help but remember what it was like.

Quality of the photos are generally good. Some or simply outstanding and border on professional. Others...I hope your palsey is responding to medication. All of them are worth seeing, and I am positive everyone will enjoy seeing towers built from primitive to deluxe...depending on available materials.

    How much longer? ... soon.

Did you ever switch posts with someone ? When I first starting working it was not unusual for k9 handlers to switch posts if they wanted to be next to a friend. This also happened if someone wanted the night off and could get someone to work for him. It usually cost a twenty dollar bill. This stopped after a couple months for obvious reasons. The one time I did work for someone I was new. They told me that when his name was called just answer the correct post number. No wonder our NCOIS's got grey hair..
It also tempted fate just a bit...

We will meet at the flag pole, by the statue of the 3 soldiers on patrol at 0600. Thus far, we have commitments from a Boy Scout Troop, some Loring AFB RampRats (AP/SP/SF) and the Andrews AFB Airman Leadership School Class. It takes about an hour. At the last washing, we had 5 VSPA members helping out. It is a great place to take your kids and Grandkids to teach them a little bit of history.

This one is for our brother Roger. We will all met again.
    Jack

    Some Where Down The Road

As young men down different roads we traveled
Not really knowing where we were might go
Some roads of concrete and some graveled
Just enjoying the happy trip never feeling low

Soon all the roads we took back then
Came together as a long single road to Vietnam
We formed into one all becoming friends
Learning to protect each other as rockets slammed in

We took care of our own during trying times
After we returned home different roads we took
Still wondering about brothers in arms in our minds
From some of the old memories we still shook

Now as we grow older we travel that road again
Seeking once more to take care of our own
Hoping the pain and hurt will mend
Not wanting anymore to be alone

We are all on that single road the leads to the grave
Now knowing we take care of our own
Alas our route with friendship is paved
As we all meet somewhere down the road

I just got off the phone with Rita Moran, Roger's sister, who has been at his side these past several weeks. Services for Roger will be held at 1100 hours, tomorrow morning at the Tigard Covenant Church, Tigart, OR. Roger requested that in lieu of flowers, any donations be sent to the VSPA. Rita said that Roger's passing was very peaceful and that Robin, Roger's girlfriend, his son Justin and daughter Paige as well as Rita were with him at the end. Rita did have one request and that is that we pray for Roger's parents, Jack and Dorothy Lansden who reside in Florida. They will not be able to attend Roger's funeral due to health problems for Mrs Lansden. Both are 89 years old. Jack was 89 on Jul 15 and Dorothy will be 89 this coming Monday. Jack is a WWII Navy veteran, whose ship, the USS Leary was sunk in the Atlantic on Christmas Eve, 1942. According to Rita, he was the last man pulled out of the water. Both are obviously distraught over not being able to attend their son's funeral, but Roger was able to visit them a few months ago to say goodbye. I assured Rita that we would pray for Jack and Dorothy. May the Good Lord Bless all Roger's family and console them in their grief. Newell

1968, Vietnam. Just came off of the Midnight shift (Phantom Flight at CRB).....Dead tired, crawled into my little bunk for a day of restless, heat-filled sleep. I finally fell asleep only to be awakened about 15 minutes later. An Airman from the Orderly Room was standing over my bunk, yelling my name loudly. I said,Wha',Wha', What do you want? He said, "They want you over at the hospital right away." I asked him who wanted me at the hospital. "I don't know, but they said it was very important." O.K., I'm thinking maybe they want me to give some of my blood type for a newly arrived wounded man or something. They were always flying medical choppers in from the field right over our row of huts all day long.

So to cut to the quick, I drag my tired body over there and the Hospital clerk tells me to report to some Full Colonel in room 27. I walked in and this Col. is lying on a cot while reading (this is no lie)a DONALD DUCK Comic book. Turns out he is a Dentist. He directed me to the Dental chair while he washed his hands. Then he pulled an X-Ray of what was my teeth out of a drawer. I'm sitting there and he tells me nothing, but sticks a Novocain needle into the right side of my mouth. Then he announces that he is about to pull a wisdom tooth. I told him that I have never had any problem with my teeth. I may as well have told him that I was really a Major General masquerading as a T/Sgt. Ignoring my plea for mercy, he continued and finally got that deep seated tooth out. He said, "I see you have had teeth pulled before, so you know what to do" while he put a cloth swab in the hole where my tooth used to be. "That'll be all Sergeant". Then he went back to his cot and resumed the prone position with his comic book in hand as I went out the door holding my bloody mouth. Just another lovely day in the Combat Zone in Vietnam.

I just read Don's cover story on the web site. Should make for a good discussion here. I added injured or getting hurt in some way also. This being the non combat type of injuries. Of course it doesn't mean being sick and tired of the place all year which we were but physically sick or getting hurt in some way. I can recall a similiar episode of diarrhea and vomiting at the same time and thinking I would die. I got one or two days off for that. I cut my finger jumping off a posting truck. Caught it on a nail. Went to the hospital for a few stitches and got a few days off until we went into yellow alert. They gave me my weapon and put me on a backup post with no dog. Our football games were famous at the beach and some guys were injured from that.

    Hi Gents,
A few years back, I became disenchanted in regards to my membership
in the VSPA. The incident involved comments posted on the VSPA
Bulletin Board by one of the member’s derogatory remarks in regards to a retired
Sergeant, who was a dear friend of mine. My friend had just recently passed
away prior to the comments being posted on the B.B.
I was irate about the incident and threatened to resign my membership in the VSPA over the incident.
Thanks, to several level headed friends of mine in the organization, who convinced me that quitting was not the answer to my indignation. The problem could be and was quickly resolved, and my pride and indignations was restored.
My point being; I hate to see any member resign their membership in this great organization; no matter how big the problem may seem at the time.
We have officers in this organization that will listen to your complaints and will be fair in their decision making in regards to those complaints!
If need be, I’m sure our President; Newell Swartz or Vice President; Hector Ramos would personally discuss your complaint or disagreement and work with you in bringing the problem to a fair resolution! Quitting places you “Outside the Wire” forever!

    Jackie
    Outside of the Wire

We have all been outside the wire sometime in our lives
and we all know the inherent dangers; bouncing betties,
claymores, mortars enemy small fire, friendly fire and
sometimes the worst threat of all; ourselves.

In order to get back to safety we must trust in our
Comrades in Arms, our training, our skills, our
family ties, our faith and our determination to
make it back to the safety and protection of our
    Comrades, friends and family!

There are time when we all feel like quitting, when the burden
seem to much to bear and we find ourselves outside of the wire
with our back to the wire, that’s when it’s time to trust our
brotherhood, our friends and our faith to guide us back to
    reason and safety.

Sometime one of the biggest obstacles to reason is our attitude,
which dictates our actions in all matters. We can not be right all
the time and realizing this fact we must be big enough to admit
and submit to compromise which can open the gates to the wire
and return us to the safety of our compound, our buddies, our
    family and friends.

There is no honor in quitting!
    To quit is to parish!
    Remember the VSPA Motto;
“We take care of our own!”
    The timeless combat code;
“One for all and all for one!’

    Brothers-

Today I have learned that my cousin has kidney cancer, both kidneys are involved. There is little that can be done and what can be will have bad sideffects and will not help.

Phylis has been married for 44 years and raised 6 children. She worked hard cleaning other people homes and her illness is caused by so much chemical exposure. She and her family were as poor as church mice and she did without to help her children go to school as well as have clothes to wear. She is a wonderfull woman, Mother, Wife and friend to all.

When you have a moment, please remember her, and her family, in your thoughts and prayers.

Probably K9 was a bit more active at this but did anyone out there recall putting up some temporary covering on certain posts ?? WE ewre notorious for it during the rainy season. Our perimeter looked like a shanty town. The day guys had to knock them down and the night guys put them back up. We gave our poor NCOIC a pretty hard time over it. Sorry Rick Julian...sir.

    Monsoon Season

You bring your poncho with you
At first during the rainy season.
But at night on post you wonder what's the reason.
You are wet to the bone no matter what.
In Vietnam you are either soaking wet or burning hot.
War dog wants to get under your rain gear.
On nights like this, pounding water from the sky is about all you can hear.
At times I let Kobuc under to get dry.
Soon we'd quarter our post and it seemed like he was asking why?

It could stop in a moment then go for a week.
If caught outside for shelter you'd seek.
    Sand and water everywhere...
In your pants and in your hair.
The enemy didn't mind working in the rain.
As he'd visit our base time and again.

Leant woes were built by k-9 troops on post at night.
They were great but at daylight it became a pitiful sight.
The Commander chewed out our boss and said we built a shanty town.
That stretched out along the perimeter, all the way around.
Our Boss chewed us out as down the chain of command it came.
We were guilty and took the blame.
They'd knock them down but suddenly they'd appear.
Then the Yelling once more we'd hear.

The yelling and building both stopped with the end of the rain.

As things went to normal once again.
Looking back it was kind of fun.
Except when sand got in your gun.

The rain back here in the States doesn't bother me today.
Cause I felt the Monsoon Season of Cam Ranh Bay.

Since we are talking about the rain here's one I wrote awhile back. Jack
    Rains of the Past

How strange my life now seems
Though older still haunted by the dreams
Things I put behind me years ago
Now come back and sadden me so

Trying to forget the past is a useless task
As I grow much older extremely fast
Questions still weigh upon my mind
Seeking answers I wish not to find

Coming home forty years ago with pain
Wanting to lock away the jungle and the rain
That ever present rain that soaked the soul
Steaming hot the air but the rain so cold

Never losing that feeling of single loneliness
Searching through the dark for brothers in arms to trust
Memories of the ones lost still fresh
Knowing we all tried our best

An almost forgotten war in history
So many not knowing its mystery
Soon we that fought in that distance place
Will fade and disappear without a trace

History books will try to explain that Vietnam war
You can not grasp what we had to bore
Unless you were there in the rain at night
Cold shivering and full of fright

It has been some time since the main gtae has reported in. Here goes. Its 10;05 zulu Its back to the VA today for a follow up on my cancer treatments. I took a battery of radiation treatments from Dec till the end of Feb 42 in all. Now I have to go and have the old blood tests and probes (oh the pain) done today to see how I fared. When I first started the treatments my PSA was 17.9 after the treatments it was 8.7 now thats better but still not good. The Sawbones say it should be somewhere between 1.0 and 4.0. So I will not know the final count for a week or two after the check up today. Of course you guys who have been through this know that it is also a large burden on the mind. So that's the Main gate report for today. The main gate will be 10-7 for now. Will return 10-10 later today

Today, Joe Pizzimenti posted his membership resignation on VSPA’s public bulletin board (see below) and sent emails to members misstating facts arising from his submitting a patch for publication at VSPA. Joe alludes to his belief of an injustice because his request has not been met in a timely manner. Joe has put words in my mouth that I did not speak. In fact, Joe has not conveyed any personal distress or feelings of ill treatment to me in any way, yet phrases his resignation as if he is an aggrieved victim and I am the calloused-cause of his distress.

As Joe has chosen a public format for his grievance it is only fair to respond on that platform so that all those whom he has included may understand the totality of our correspondence and the validity of his complaint.

Current VSPA Members Only may go to 'Joe Pizzimenti Resignation' (http://www.vspa.com/aspprotect/resignation-joe-pizzamenti-2009.asp) and review all the emails exchanged between Joe and I, and form your own opinion concerning Joe's resignation.

Good morning mu brothers. There has not been a poem for a week or two so i wrote one this morning that hope you like. Take note Phil Carroll this might be about you. Jack

    Walking Alone In the Dark

Dark comes and it’s just the two of you
One talking the other only listening
A one way conversation both knowing what to do
    Walking alone in the dark

Even though one does not speak
Each know what they are thinking
Threats of all types they seek
    Walking alone in the dark

Making you feel secure and safe
He rubs your leg with his face
You place in him a great faith
    Walking alone in the dark

You stoke his head with your hand
    That great wonderful K-9 dog
With you and you alone he will make a stand
    Walking alone in the dark

Both knowing what to do in danger
He is your security as you are his
    Beyond being each others protector
    Walking alone in the dark

There are others that you guard
They know not that you are there
Only that from them the enemy is barred
    Walking alone in the dark

Sleeping safe as you keep watch
Those unsung heroes and their dogs
Men and their K-9 are all topnotch
    Walking alone in the dark

A tribute to the soldiers of the invasion of Europe…D-Day
    (6th of June 1944)

Where Valor Sleeps and Red Poppies Grow

On this foreign soil Old Glory still
flies over row by row of white crosses,
    marking this hallowed ground where
    each courageous soldier lies.
Thousands fought and died for the
Red White and Blue and Country ties.

Flag and Country these brave soldiers
shall never again see, for their lives
were sacrificed for you and me.

Buried so far away from their homeland,
overlooking once bloody beaches of sand.
In tombs with white crosses on this
wind swept hill, among fields of red
    poppies growing so tranquil.

Yet, as the years pass, with tears of grief
and pride, family, friends, and patriots
will forever remember how each hero
    so bravely died.

    Old Glory shall forever fly
    over these white crosses, row
by row, valor sleeps but never
dies, and a single red poppy
    shall forever remind us of
    our ties.

Everyone has quirks and everyone has bad days. Leadership of course needs talented folks that are willing to do what needs to be done to have an organization. I do not need to know or like every member. I guess my skin just isn't that thin any more. We all however are a reflection of the group we identify with. Ours is a proud heritage. If some one offends me I am to go to them personally and if I get no satisfaction I am to take two or three with me to iron it out. If that doesn't work I bring it to the group. If a person is wrong they should be confronted. The group is bigger than any one person. Being a pastor I've known people that leave the church being upset but were not interested in resolving an issue. They just wanted out because their feelings got ruffled. I continue to support VSPA. We are and should continue to be accountable to each other in what we do.

I went to Las Vegas for a few days for my mom's 84th birthday, and she is doing well. I also drove my brother Larry (VSPA Associate member and web host) to the hospital for reconstructive surgery on his leg, ankle, and right foot. He is home and recovering, and sniveling, so I guess he will have a full recovery if he can take it easy and unplug his laptop from his navel for a day or two. I know he checks his email with his iPhone (he sent me a gross photo of his foot), so if you want to send an email and say 'hi' then he would probably appreciate having something to do (email: larry@larryposs.com). His little woman, Ann, had eye surgery the day before his, so her daughter is down taking care of them and making sure they behave themselves.

This morning as I was finishing up watching Fox News before heading to the VA Hospital for the CMA's annual cookout with the patients there they came out with a story that ws odd to say the least . Seems from all the operations to make MJ"s nose little and patitte ,in his later yrs with the results of all that plastic surery to the nose it began to disinergrate . He had a fake nose made up that he wore in public that wasnt on during his passing but was in the room at the time according to those close to him. The family seems to think the police or someone with them took it when they gathered up the evidence . Be on the lookout on EBay and other online auctions ,it could very well show up there and the family wants it back desperately..
Now how much would an original MJ fake nose Bring? SIX FIGURES MAYBE AS CRAZY AS SOME ARE ABOUT HIS LEGACY. GOD HELP US ALL , HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND and pray for our Troops. sam

BTW we fed about 15O patients out of the Psych ward at our annual cookout at the VA Hospital in Salem ,Va. today. We had them come out into a fenced in area out of lockup for the afternoon. They were so appreciatiive .

  • Another AF Museum Visit -- Pat Houseworth (A little warmer this go round), Fri, Jul 24 2009, 5:02:55 PDT (cpe-98-28-33-191.columbus.res.rr.com/98.28.33.191)
My wife Patricia and I took our second 70{one way} mile trip from Celina to the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson yesterday. We were there last January for the VSPA/Sky Cop "Mini-Reunion", when 60(counting wives and close friends) or so former AF Cops from SE Asia got together for an afternoon of BS and touring. It was a great time, but the temps if I recall were in the single digits...yesterday was a bit warmer, about 76 under mostly cloudy skies.

The good news is, the painting and restoration projects are complete, and if you're in the area, you should consider stopping by for the day, although no way you can see the whole place in one day.

It's a little early, and several mini reunions and the big event in Phoenix are still on the agenda...but I'm thinking another event at W-P sometime in late February or early March 2010 might be a good idea. This time, if those who want to attend want to get a block of motel rooms within shouting distance, that might also be in the cards. But it will still be an informal get together...we will all come as go as individuals or in small groups as we wish.

E-Mail me with your thoughts on dates and doing a "overnighter"...never to early to get things started.

and you can stop by my blog if interested in seeing the stories, photos, and linking up to the AF Museum:

Thousands packed onto the aircraft carrier Hornet yesterday (25 July 2009) to hear Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin describe his experience as the second man on the moon -- returning to commemorate the 40th anniversary of that historic mission.

I read that McNamara had passed on. My first thought was "Good riddance to bad rubbish". I know that is probably a pretty simplistic view, but I'm a pretty simple guy! PR 66

  • MOH Posthumously for Sgt Jared C. Monti -- Phil Arcadipane, Fri, Jul 24 2009, 10:46:55 PDT (c-76-127-210-210.hsd1.ma.comcast.net/76.127.210.210)
Sgt Jared Monti from Raynham, Mass has been posthumously named to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor this week for giving his life as he tried to rescue wounded comrades under heavy fire in Afghanistan in 2006. Jared grew up with my son playing sports and attending grammer and high school together before entering the Army and assigned to the 10th Mountain Div. out of New York. He previously was awarded two Bronze Stars w/V for combat action and two Purple Hearts and was due to return home within two months of being killed. I posted this info for it will be the first MOH that President Obama awards since elected to office. I hope they give these new troops the reconition they truely deserve. Jared's Dad, Paul Monti received the telephone call this past Tuesday from the President himself and the MOH will be awarded at the WHite House this fall. Phil

I just got a call from my brother Nugent Jackson, LM013, 377th 70/71. Nugent informed me he is going in to surgery tomorrow to have half of his stomoch removed because of a bleeding ulser. The ulser was on top a a cancer tumor caused by Agent Orange. I will find out tomorrow how it went. Keep a good thought for him and I'll post the out-come. Thanks...
