Andy, you should know, but most likely don't, that atheists score better than believers when tested on religion in general and Biblical literacy in particular. So while I appreciate the reading tip I am pretty up on what your Holy book says. A great many atheists are former believers and many are former pastors. So even those like me who never really believed have access to the very best of theological thinking and argument. Any atheists reasonably well read knows the Bible better than the average Christian. I have read the Bible cover to cover. Most Christians have not. The ignorance in these matters is much more on the side of believers. Most Christians seem ignorant of much of anything about atheism. Quoting the Bible to an atheist tells us nothing we don't already know. That you can't recall knowing an atheist can only suggest that you do not appear to others to be one who can accept someone who thinks differently than you do. Rest assured they are out there. The world is vastly smaller when you live in a bubble.

But here is something you might find surprising. Mostly we atheists, and that is between a quarter and a third of the country, don't care what supernatural beliefs believers hold. But we do care very much about what believers DO and SAY, especially in public forums. In particular I only comment when someone makes false claims or demeans some of our brothers. We atheists exist. We will not be in heaven or hell after death because we know those places don't exist. (Bruce suggest he doesn't know one way or another. I am not plagued by uncertainty. I know they don't exist.) Claiming we will is an insult because it denies our existence. When someone describes veterans broadly and suggests we are all believers, that assertion is flat wrong. Show respect by recognizing that veterans are of many beliefs. Stop pretending we all see the world as Christians do. We don't. If hearing that some of us do not believe as you do is troubling, you must know that lumping us all into your Christian world is troubling for atheists.

Go back and read Frank's comment and then my response. Bruce deliberately mischaracterized Frank's post as being primarily about Frank's late wife. That was not the main part of his post and was not what I responded to. Claiming otherwise is dishonest. Bruce obviously did not read Frank's post with any care. Anyone unwilling to recognize and show respect to the many veterans who are not Christians cares only about veterans whose views he approves of. That person must never claim "We take care of our own" unless what he really means is "We take care of our own--so long as you are Christian--and just keep your mouth shut if you think differently."

No one needs to fear conversing with me. You can always count on me to communicate honestly and civilly. Please try to do the same. I don't take offense and I do not fear.

Ken
