Subject: A Reunion after 50 years

To our brothers & sisters of the VSPA. Just completed a 3 day reunion in Toronto Canada with Alfred R. Warr formerly of Warren, Ohio. Al served with quite a few of us, first in Danang then Binh Thuy, from Feb. 69 to Feb. 70. It has been a walk back to 50 years of fleeting memories since Al was part of the trac SAT and big brother to me & Donald Ashby at BTAB. We’ve been in touch over the years and I always tried to encourage him to join VSPA but his need for dialysis, and other health complications have kept him home bound except for trips to the Buffalo NY VA Hospital. This past February Al lost his dear wife of 48 years and his two sons and two granddaughters decided to find a way to positively purpose his days. Knowing we had a special bond, they copied my contact info and informed me that he had moved to the top of the list for a donated kidney and would pay for my trip from Myrtle Beach to Toronto. After conferring with Yolanda, and looking to when we could both make the trip, she encouraged me to go alone so we could fully enjoy the time together. I declined any reimbursement for my ticket as I got a good deal and all was set.
On 12/6 Saturday morning, after spending the night at his sons’ Carlo’s house, a bunch of family members showed up at his house and his granddaughter‘s Jada and Brianna announced that they had a Christmas gift for him but it would have to be returned by Monday.
“Surprise Al you’re buying dinner tonight for everyone”, I proclaimed. Some long hugs and tears were shed, then happiness all around. Yolanda was sent a short video and commented that seeing the emotion and love we Vietnam vets share is really something special.
Al wants to thank all for the IM well wishes & the phone calls he’s received.
I’m quoting him directly as he was cooking one of his wife’s Italian recipes for our dinner yesterday afternoon:
“I’ve had a lot of surprises in my life, but never one as great as this to see my brother Hector to be presented with a VSPA life membership, my gratitude to Yolanda for letting my brother come to visit and see a down but not out Vietnam Brother. I give grace to god, for letting me reunite after 50 yrs”.
Hopefully after he has the kidney transplant and recovery he’ll be able to join us at our 2020 Reunion. Email me if you remember Al and you’d like to give him a call. I’m posting this to our BB but feel free to share on the Facebook page as I’m currently not in the Group. Wishing all a Merry Christmas, a Prosperous and Healthy New Year
