There should not be a problem for any SP to file a successful claim for hearing loss. However, in most cases unless you have hearing loss that requires hearing aides, the VA will usually only award for "tinnitus" as a 10% service connected disability. The first thing you need to do is make sure you have an experienced Veteran Service Officer assist you in filing the claim. If your claim was denied, you need to discuss with the VSO whether it is better to request the VA reopens the claim or to file an appeal. It is often better to have the claim reopened instead of doing an appeal. The following is the opening statement from my VA claim:

"I have suffered irreparable hearing loss because of my service in the United States Air Force and my duties as an Air/Security Policeman. I had no hearing loss or hearing problems and was never treated for any hearing related injuries before enlisting in the US Air Force. My hearing loss is directly related to and resulting from repeated and constant exposure to high volume jet engine noise and other high pitched sounds while performing flight line security duties; as well as other security police duties such as police patrol, responding to emergencies and regular training including firearms training. These duties did not allow Security Policemen to wear proper ear (hearing) protection while performing the required duties."

I followed that up with a description of each assignment I had in the Air Force and the noise and other factors that contributed to my hearing loss at each base.

While my hearing has deteriorated further since I filed my claim, as I mentioned earlier, I only received 10% for tinnitus. I need to look at refiling to get an increase for the hearing loss.
