What you are thinking is a common misconception. Although I don't receive any additional compensation, having my cancer properly documented as being service connected is very important, if it is eventually the cause of my demise. It will mean that my wife will receive all of the benefits as a survivor of a Veteran, who died of a service connected illness. I won't go into all of those here. They are listed on the VA web site.
