I never had a chance to see the Stones with Brian, unfortunately. So I have to rely on the footage we have of the various TV shows the Stones appeared on throughout the 60s (thank god for TV! LOL!) Brian is at the front on pretty much all of these, if memory serves. He and Mick were by far and away the most popular Stones, with Keith a distant third. No amount of ALO re-engineering could change that.

Brian had already been "downgraded" to mere rhythm guitar status

I don't think that Brian was "downgraded" to rhythm guitar status. When he and Keith weren't weaving (something, I'd like to point out, that was Brian's idea, not Keith's), Keith was generally considered the lead guitarist in those days. It is ironic that it was Keith himself who was "downgraded" to rhythm guitar status when Mick Taylor joined the band. To the point where many fans think that Keith was always the rhythm guitarist, even in the 60s when in fact he was not.

As an aside, my personal opinion is that the rhythm guitar is very important, just not as flashy as the lead guitar. Besides, in Brian's days, there weren't very many "solos" as we think of them today so the difference between lead and rhythm wasn't as obvious as it is today. Just a few observations from someone who admittedly doesn't play the instrument.
