I think Brian's dad was trying to deflect responsibility by saying that once he lost his "true love", Anita, that Brian changed, etc. His dad admitted in a letter to Linda L.'s parents that Brian was easily depressed. Mr. Jones never met Anita. I'm no fan of Anita, but she was an easy scapegoat to blame all of Brian's problems on. He had problems before he met her imo.
