Yes, it's a fact we got crucial info, before we tortured not after. Kalid Sheik Mohammed sang like a bird and then we water boarded him 100 times. The X-Mas bomber told us plenty even after he was read his rights (just as nearly all the terror suspects caught under Bush were).

The right wingers I talk to act like 24 is real life and we'd torture a guy to find out a mission was going down an hour later. That's Hollywood. When a guy is caught, anyone in his cell scatters as the whole operation is compromised. That's standard procedure going back to the Cold War for spies on any side. We can find out lots of info on who's who and organization but future plans will change as soon as a suspect is caught. These guys aren't as dumb as we think.

The CIA needs more Arabic speakers and double agents. Satellites and drone planes only go so far. We beat the Soviets because we learned to understand how they think, we aren't doing that with this foe.

As for the "they won't be held back by rules" argument: I thought we are supposed to be better than them, not the same as. We should win with the rules of our system, to give up on those is to say the enemy was won. They aren't a sovereign country, they are criminals. And think of the future, if we do go to war with another nation-they could torture our people that they capture and since we've changed the rules, we can say nothing about it.

I've read interviews with WW2 veterans who did interrogations of the enemy prisoners and they were very upset about what Bush/Cheney had done. Our own POWs from Vietnam, Korea, WW2 said they were waterboarded and worse. We were outraged then but want to turn around & do it ourselves?

Anyway, I liked ep. 1 of The Pacific although like Band of Brothers, it takes time to remember who's who. Everyone's in a uniform so they look alike. Unlike BOB, this one will show life on the homefront with family and girlfriends so there will be breaks from the battle scenes.
