Subject: Dane Cook-ing up a review (hopefully not the only one)

Well, we had a bit of a slow start for the new season, but I'm confident that more writers will join in for future episodes. AT least we had a good effort with five writers and seven sketches. Let's do the breakdown.

Backstage at the New SNL: This was a good way to satirize the changes between seasons. Far better than the actual SNL's cold opening where they trotted out another pathetic "Bush is dumb" sketch. A lot of great moments in this piece; my favorites were finding Parnell's blood in the cup, Will getting an STD from Beth, and the promise not to bring back Horatio (thank you Lorne). I really hope that sometime soon we'll actually see Al Roker's Adventures in Arson.

Monologue: This didn't really fly with me. When a guy known for stand-up does a monologue, I prefer to see him do his stand-up material. The "huge tits" and fellatio jokes fell flat, and the cameos were unnecessary in my opinion.

Phony Call: Where the hell do I come up with these premises? This was basically my attempt to do an I Love Lucy style sketch - when something goes wrong for the protagonist, it REALLY goes wrong.

We'll Need a Few Minutes: This was a great piece. It was a nice twist on the standard restaurant sketch by having the customers be completely annoying rather than the waiters. The couple had some killer dialogue between them (what did they have against fish anyway?), and it was hilarious seeing the waiter's exasperation due to their delays. Loved the cottage-cheese in the face ending, I really wish I could have seen that acted out.

Past and Present Bob: Another sketch from our new writer Alex, and it's quite good. Time travel is a good source of humor, especially with the whole concept of paradoxical decisions and unpleasant information about the future. However, it was a little short, and the ending fell kind of flat when it was revealed it was just an acid trip. I would have liked it if at the end, an elderly man appeared from out of nowhere and revealed he was Bob's future self. Just my opinion, though.

Live with Regis and Kelly: I'm not really a fan of the Regis and Kelly parodies, because they're all pretty much the same. Here, they stayed in the same cliched character settings, which didn't have any appeal. Also, I didn't think dialogue was that funny, and the sexual references didn't add any humor. Sorry, but as I've said dozens of times already, I'm just not a fan of celebrity parodies.

Nintendo-Ass: So-so sketch. The stunts that the video game characters act out were great and would have been fun to see, but the dialogue just didn't seem to flow the right way and didn't come across as that funny. STill, just imagining Kenan dressed as a Pikachu is utterly hilarious.
