- Just wondering... -- Jim Bevan, 13:57:13 08/03/04 Tue
I haven't been able to get any full sketches in, but I'm hoping that when it comes time to present the best of the mock summer season, my Weekend Update commentary portraying Nader as a Nazi will be included. I would like to know what the rest of you thought of it, and if it is worthy of being considered one of the summer's best.

- Is this a good joke? -- Jim Bevan, 06:16:47 07/28/04 Wed
I heard the story in the news and added a clever punchline. Tell me what you think:
It has been reported that former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein has taken up gardening in prison. His guards have commented that Hussein's garden would yield an impressive harvest if he would only stop exposing his seedlings to Sarin gas.
Do you like it? I was thinking of an add-on line "Apparently old habits die hard", but that may be a little unnecessary.

- Help Me Out -- Bill Livingston, 23:54:08 07/27/04 Tue
Bill Livingston here, I appear sometimes on this forum to give ideas or review a little bit. I have tried my hand at comedy writing and decided to try and post a sketch for the Cross episode. It involved Cross smoking some weed during intermission, and resulting in a fantasy about him becoming Steve Martin. Well, it was some great stuff so I sent it in last thursday. I come to see it today and find no sketch posted. I know I sent it in correctly. I am very confused! I looked into past archives to see if this was a problem and it was. But it was never solved. I want to know what to do. I suggest someone reply by giving details on how they send a sketch to be posted. I would have posted it onto the site, but I just wrote it on the email to Pat, so it's gone. Anyone with suggestions please reply this post!
Thank You

- Idea for David Cross' monologue -- Jim Bevan, 20:30:17 07/16/04 Fri
Let me know what you think of this for a monologue concept. First, a little backstory to set the scene - last December at a Howard Dean fundraiser, Cross used the N-word when referring to Condoleeza Rice and Colin Powell, and refused to apologize for it. My premise for the monologue is that Powell and Rice confront him on stage and call him up for his racist language, but Cross tries to rationalize it by claiming that as long as he's a Democrat, it's okay to use racist terms. I'm thinking of having him joined by a player portraying Robert Byrd, Democratic senator and unrepentant former Klansman, to defend his actions. Is it a good concept, or is it too political?

For those who haven't read my last s-n-l.com review, (Under "The Doc" May 2003.) I said that I was going to "consolodate my sketches into a TV Sketch comedy pilot that probaly isn't good enough for even the lowly UPN."
Well, as it turns out, the famed "Un-Cabaret" out in Los Angeles and it's brainchild "The Other Network" is going to be holding a TV writing contest. What makes this cooler, is the fact that scripts (Original and Spec) are going to be judged by the likes of "legendary" TV Writers such as Bob Odenkirk, Alan Zwiebel, Jay Kogen, Bill Oakley & Josh Weinstein and others.
They weren't specific on any prizes up for grabs, but as long as I'm being judged by writers of that caliber, I care not. I've got my fingers crossed, you should do the same for me. (I won't find out for a while since the deadline is in September, but I'll keep you updated.)

I'd like to do a bit showing Nader try to defend himself, but inadvertently acting like a Nazi while attempting to do so. Would this merit a full skit, or should it just be a WU commentary?

Once again, I must say I am sorry for trashing you on the monologue before it was even released for public viewing. I was going through a stressful week at work and hadn't received my paycheck due to a computer error, plus I was still stuck on condensing that Bush/Kerry skit, and I thought that the monologue I wrote was funny enough to be included. But still, that doesn't excuse me from just lashing out at you. I shouldn't have acted in such a manner just because I didn't find your monologue as funny, and I deeply regret my actions. I hope we can put this behind us and continue to work together to produce fine comedy.
BTW, sorry I haven't lent any reviews for the show, but in my grand opinion, this wasn't a very good start for the summer season.

I'm sorry, I read it and I couldn't find anything funny about it. The Reagan interruptions, while timely, lacked any truly comedic lines, plus the whole news reports interrupting the monologue has been done to death. Sorry, but this was not one of your best; and this was picked over the Letterman/Thurman monologue! Why??!!!

You may have done something like this before, and if so, feel free to blame it on my ignorance. But I was thinking that for a summer show or two, writers could use "SNL Legends" in their sketches. Anyone who has ever been on the show, living or dead, would be eligible. So You could have Farley and John Belushi in a scene with Cheri Oteri and Tina Fey or something. It could be fun. Anyway, it's just a thought.
