Subject: The review of Zorro
In reply to: Patrick Lonergan 's message, "REVIEWS: Catherine Zeta-Jones 10/22/05" on 15:39:04 10/22/05 Sat

Well, once again I am the first (and hopefully not the only) reviewer for the latest episode. I tried to get a monologue in, but as it turns out, after I mailed it out to Patrick I checked the site and found that one had already been submitted. Ah well, I doubt mine was that good anyway. It dealth with Catherine struggling through her monologue after having her wisdom teeth removed. Maybe I can retool it for a future host.

As a side note for my review this week, since I want to avoid any further conflict, I will not be reviewing Mark's submissions. I don't want to cause any ill feelings between us simply because of a difference of opinion. Sorry, but I feel this is the best way to prevent any negativity.

Now, onto the reviews.

Hannity and Colmes: I wasn't really too partial to this. The whole "FOX News is far right" bit has become somewhat cliched now. And I don't really think the lines were that humorous. Having Sean blame liberals for everything just wasn't an effective comedic tool. Still, I did enjoy the fact that he didn't let Alan get a word in during the discussion. Quite nice, since I've watched the show, and Alan rarely has anything worthwhile to say. (Ha ha)

The End of Zorro: Zorro in middle age - priceless. Horatio was a very nice casting choice, perfect for a hero who's let himself go. The argument between him and his wife was wonderful (plus it had a rarely-seen Spanish stereotype). And I loved the fact that he wasn't listening to her bitch at all. The best parts were his inability to make a "Z", and revealing what became of his horse. The ending fell a little flat, though. Distracting him from saving people with food was a little obvious. Still, an excellent piece.

The Beautiful Hitchhiker: This reminded me a lot of "The Perfect English Tenant" from last year, and was just as humorous. The dialogue between the characters flowed wonderfully, and each new unsettling revelation about Victoria added to the suspense and comedy. I especially loved how only the mother saw something wrong at first, and everyone else was blind to Victoria's strangeness simply because she was a hot woman, even when she threatened the family matriarch. Having the guys all scramble over the naked pictures was a killer ending.

The Top Salesman: Another sketch with a great buildup to utter comedic insanity. Jerry Hargatin is an incredible character, the way he can shift from congenial to perverse to dangerous is great, and he had wonderful lines. Hopefully we'll be able to see more of him soon. I wonder if after reading this review, he'll return to the bathroom to "celebrate" my singing of his praises.

And Liberty and Justice For Some: As a minor DC-comics geek, I had a great appreciation for this sketch. I had everything: sexual tension and innuendo, slams at the legal system, ethnic jokes, and clever banter between the characters. Wonder Woman's disgust at the constant come-ons was handled quite well, especially when she brushed the defendant off by saying she had to wash her invisible jet. One nitpick point, though: Wonder Woman is not from the planet Amazonia. She was born here on earth, on the island of Themascyra, ancestral home of the Amazons... and I have just proven myself to be an even bigger DC-comics geek.

DMV: Nice slam at how A&E has been whoring itself by giving in to the reality TV craze. This sketch captures the frustration experienced at a DMV far better than any "Simpsons" episode centered on Patty and Selma ever could. The rudeness and indifference of the clerks was very nicely handeled. Another nitpick point, if you don't mind my bringing it up, was that no emotional direction was given for the characters. That made it a little hard to read how they were actin and reacting. Still, a great piece.

Dennis Miller for NetZero: Not a very effecitve Miller parody. You had him focus almost primarily on celebrity and pop-culture references. The real Miller would have one liners about Shakespeare's folios and the Israeli parliament of 1956. I did like the line about how you'll be connected to the net "faster than my last show got cancelled."
