Subject: I kept my promise... so where’s my PARADE?
In reply to: Patrick Lonergan 's message, "REVIEWS: Lance Armstrong 10/29/05" on 16:36:34 10/29/05 Sat

I said I was going to review, so here it is. Let’s get our sketch by sketch review started.

Dog vs. Tom Delay: I’ve heard of Dog, but I never saw the show. In my opinion, this was not the best idea. Because I don’t how anyone could parody him. Delay jokes have been overplayed. The result is a sketch that never really took off. Sorry Mark, but this was miss.

Monologue: We get a decent monologue. The performance enhancing “cue-cards” bit was hilarious. Too bad the real Lance used the cue-cards. I’m glad he made a jab at his wife, and the Marci Klein bit was great. My only complaint was the excessive host bashing. It was great don’t get me wrong, but it tends to get a little inside. I think inside jokes are ok in small doses, but even I’m guilty of too many inside jokes so don’t worry about it too much.

Shelly Long Show: Well this impression has returned! In this outing for the talk show, Shelly goes “Carrie” after a mix-up. While it did manage to keep fresh with the mix-up and Carrie reference. The small talk in the beginning fell flat, it just wasn’t effective. Still, I congratulate on not making it a carbon copy Jason. BTW, I think Fred Armisen would have been a better Ozzie Guillen, but that’s not really important.

Sidewalk Patrol: This was ok Jim, but it wasn’t your best. I mean some of the one-liners were laughable. But it just seems like unorthodox patrol cop gag has been done a lot. Given out unnecessary tickets is kind of stale subject matter in my opinion. But the dog owner part was okay with him sucking the urine with the straw, that’s some good sick humor. But other than that, it was just flat. Sorry Jim, but you’ve had better ones.

Public Service Announcement: This was great DRG4, it was a quick clean little piece featuring Lance. I could have seen this as the monologue in my opinion. Him alone just delivering this little announcement. There’s always this little debate over guys who never learned to ride a bike. So this was well played. The Bush headline at the end wasn’t necessary in my opinion.

Bush Wants Lance: Well... okay. This seems a bit too easy to do in my opinion. Some of the jabs were a bit stale. I never was a fan of running into anyone backstage gags. The line about Fred as a giant hamster was laughable. But other than that it was just stale Harriet Miers jokes.

WU: I originally was going to submit stuff, but I got distracted due to other things... so I couldn’t finish them. For the most part we get some very awkward jokes with uneven punch-lines. I usually pick a couple good jokes, but there were not too many good ones. The only decent joke was the Hogan’s Hero joke and maybe Sheryl Swoops joke. I wasn’t a fan of Lance’s Commentary, it’s basically the same reiteration as the promo and the Bush meets Lance sketch. Nicholas Cage’s bit could have been done better, turning him into a horny bastard has been overplayed by every celebrity.

Stress Balls: One of my favorite sketches of the episode. A good jab at Lance’s “situation”. The whole product being shaped like balls because of anger was great. I enjoyed the well placed sophomoric ball jokes! The ending about using Tom Green was laughable. I was glad someone went after some sensitive material so good job Pat!

Georgetown: I’m haven’t seen Elizabethtown, so I don’t know how this sketch was similar to the movie. So George loves Harriet, I don’t know? There were again some standard Bush is dumb jokes, which were pointless. Some of the funeral lines were laughable, but were they taken from the movie I don’t know?

Frisbee: I’m glad Jim looked at the sketch. And thanks for the intellectual septic tank line! Yeah, the pussy lines were too much, but I felt it was necessary, because they were playing highschool students. I wanted to make Lance the serious guy in gym class. There’s always that one guy who takes gym class seriously and Lance seems like that guy.

Lance Armstrong wants to be James Bond: For the most part, this ok. The directors’ lines were well written. I loved the gay porn reference and the Sheen Armstrong bit. The ending was kind of abrupt in my opinion, and having the stagehand be Bond was too random and not the funny random. It would have been funny ending with Lance as Bond and the line “The first James bond with one testicle.” That’s what I think anyways.

Lance Armstrong Exposed: Good way to end the show. It had all the makings of a celebrity sketch. The Nottacelebrity name was predictable but the dialogue between Lance and Sheryl was well done! The Mario Luigi references were random, but well thought out for an Italian restaurant. This was definitely a solid sketch. My only criticism was that the ending was too predictable with Lance really having an affair and the lousy reservation gag has been overdone in my opinion.

Well that’s it for this episode, it was unbalanced but provided a better punch than SNL’s. Next week, Jason Lee hosts and I’m pretty excited about it. It’ll probably be up there with Carrell and Jon Heder. And I must say our SNY Goes Commercial compilation was quite good. It featured a good mix of old and new commercials.
