Subject: It's the long awaited review
In reply to: Patrick Lonergan 's message, "REVIEWS: Hilary Swank 02/19/05" on 17:51:35 02/19/05 Sat

I apologize for being so late in my review. Apparently a few days means 2 weeks. But here it is, and not a moment too soon!

The Truth-Mark Jennings Reese II: I have to say this was okay. It wasn’t super funny, but it had it’s high moments. Unlike Jack, I like those explanations at the end. This one especially, because it ties up the sketch. Although it was short, it was an acceptable cold opening

Monologue-CCS: I would have added some flash-backs of Hilary Swank competing with the other cast-members. There could have been some great dialogue. The Chris Parnell rap was good as always. A nice monologue that is in relation to a project of the host. That’s what a monologue should be.

Theodore on the Wall-Jason Dignard: The craziest idea I have ever heard. But it was creative. The key humor here was Will Forte acting as the crazy old man. Seems like he’s getting type-cast into those roles. Aside from the fact that this is very illogical I did enjoy the ending.

Boxey-JP Ragan: Two crazy sketches in a row. Once again, the ending was the funniest part. But it a gag that kept build up. Good Job Mr. Ragan!

Gay Robot Monster-Jack Farrell: The old sci-fi movies parody is fun, but I’ve seen SNL do it a lot. Finally one of us went after the whole “Gay is the Devil” mentality that we are seeing currently. Fred Armisen is becoming the gay guy in all the sketches. But anyways, this was a solid sketch. At least there are still some topical/current events sketches.

John Walsh-DRG4: I actually know who John Walsh is. Therefore the fugitive joke made sense. This was a pretty good sketch. The game with Kate Winslet was the funniest part. Nice sketch.

WU: A lot of submissions this week. I wrote the Kid Rock jokes and the Andy Richter cameo. The goat’s hooves are an actual percussion instrument. In my town, this is the month of Girl Scout cookie sales, and Samoas are my favorite.

But anyways My favorite jokes were Prostate Cancer, Valentines Day in Singapore, and the Survivor Joke.

The Captain Stabbin bit,: I didn’t really laugh. Then again, there’s porno talk on SNL. And it’s great to learn about another site. Thanks for the info! (Just kidding, or am I?)

The Tommy Peters bit was better He represented the typical high school senior, but I would have added something about how those recruitment officers are relentless.

Tommy Peters: One officer came up to me and this is what happened
Officer: You wanna have fun in life, right?
Tommy: Uh right
Officer: So, let’s go get an ice-cream cone, go to the movies and (really softly and quickly) join the army!

Literati Kid-Hilary: A sketch demonstrating all the hilarity of high school. The ending however was really abrupt. I didn’t get the whole mother-thing. But the environmental course gag was a nice touch.

FOB’s Tattoo-CCS: I liked it especially the line “wipe that damn underwear model grin from your face” But yeah, there were a few weak spots. I think previous posts pointed them out.

It’s a Small World-MJR II: Well, the concept was okay, but sketch didn’t really go anywhere. Probably because it was kind of short and abrupt. Then again, I don’t how much you could have done with this topic. I think it would have been funnier if they met in a different place. Maybe if two transsexuals met at Old Country Buffet, what better place to pick up people than Old Country Buffet. Then there could have been a little bit more expansion on the plot.

The Laugh Shack-Jason Dignard: Pretty good sketch. It was a good concept and the ending line was excellent. The card with the old naked grandpa was good because there are weird joke shops that try and sell you that kind of stuff. I personally have never seen those kinds of cards and I’m glad. I don’t need those images in my head. But anyways, the sketch was solid.

60 Minutes-Marcus Campbell: The same gag was used throughout the whole sketch. But it was a good gag. And the ending tag-line about 44 minutes was hilarious. I would have added a part where the interviewer tries to contact Spongebob, Clifford, etc. and they want a piece of the companies. Coz, hey they "own" them.

School Ties-DRG4: This was a different sketch. I know a lot of kids who have parents who are teachers. They would always attend different schools. The idea was great, but I really wasn’t laughing much. I did chuckle at the ending though.

It was a solid show. I didn’t catch all of the SNL episode, but I think I can call this week’s winner SNY.

Next Saturday is David Spade, and I can’t wait. Hopefully SNL can put on a real show! Then the following week has Ashton Kutcher hosting again. His first time was okay. But I’d like him be a little more versatile.
