Subject: Review of Episode #118: As Narrated by Morgan Freeman
In reply to: Patrick Lonergan 's message, "REVIEWS: Morgan Freeman 08/06/05" on 23:03:13 08/06/05 Sat

Okay, so Morgan won’t actually be narrating this review. It would be cool if he did, hell it would be cooler if he hosts a real episode of SNL! But I’m sure Morgan Freeman would love to host seeing how great this episode is.

CO: This was my first cold opening, and I’m very proud of this one. Hopefully I will be able to write more excellent Cold Openings in the future.

Monologue: I’m glad you were able to use the host and only the host. That’s always a plus for monologues. I enjoyed the criticism of SNL’s use of gay-themed sketches. The letter format was quite clever, and the ending was well played. I was not expecting Jim Breuer. I was thinking instead of saying “We have a great show tonight” you could have said “We have another great gay themed episode, and you get to see me Morgan Freeman play a gay trucker!”

Minstrel Show: Excellent idea, and although it was a bit slow at first, it built up as it went along. Heh, even Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson provided crazy lines. I loved the spinning newspaper gag and Morgan Freeman’s character was random and hilarious! I think the ending packed a very powerful punch Jason. It was a well thought out ending, and it was my favorite part. Very good.

Cop Patrol: Loved the 70's style sequence, the overall feel of this cop sketch was a clever parody. The idea was good, rookie cop getting confused with the Miranda rights. The whole Taco Bell thing was hilarious. Never stop a fat hungry Mexican, I’ll remember that. And the end with the whole freeze frame, nice jab. I was surprised that Morgan died. Ah well, overall it was a solid sketch.

Bitter Regrets: I know I’ve already said this Jim, but the idea was very clever. I’m glad you were able to work in the flag suggestion. It definitely kept the momentum going. And I’m glad you went for the subtle reference to the Jude Law affair. I love when sketches include hidden current event humor. See “The Auto Show Spokeswoman Awards” for another great example.

WU: I’ll post that separately since I’ll be reviewing it joke by joke this time.

Help is on the way: The idea was semi-interesting, but I loved Morgan’s role, and once again the build-up/pacing(I don’t know what the exact term is) was excellent. The woman’s lines were too much, but I enjoyed the ending. Once again, your ending packed the punch Jason. This was another excellent ending that really brought it all together.

Real Celebrity Moment: Uh... okay, I was expecting more absurdity. Mr. Kool-Aid just going around hitting on women, there’s really not much humor in that. Sure the Kool-Aid abortion was a chuckler, but that’s about it. Maybe diving into the origins of Kool-Aid would have been better. I wonder if Mr. Kool Aid was conceived when a boy mixed Pop-Rocks in a can of Coke.

Safety: A bit too over the top with the meteor. I was thinking someone was gonna die at first, but I’m glad you kept it “safe”. The concept was okay, but I enjoyed the progression, but the ending with the meteor, meh, I didn’t like it. But I did enjoy the safety squat by Fred Armisen. It was very visual, and it had that comical awkwardness effect. Still it’s a good simple sketch for your second time around.

Casual Conversation: Okay, I’m no Star Wars fan, but I agree with the comments. Mark Hamill, you could have had him cameo, it’s not like he has a lot going for him right now! But anyways this sketch was okay, I really didn’t think too much of the small talk. I mean everyone knows about the incest in Star Wars. I did find the Jay Leno section a bit better, along with the Promo for the Tony Danza show.

Well, excellent episode this week. I’m glad there were many submissions. Don’t worry, this review is not over yet. Come back to see my Weekend Update analysis.
