While I agree that a reality show is probably not the best way to select a new cast member, I do think that SNL needs to look around a little more when looking for cast members. Sometimes I feel like I know people funnier than the cast members, and none of them do comedy or improv professionally, but would still probably jump at the chance to be a cast member. Improv groups like the Groundlings make sense, but improv comedy is still really different from sketch comedy and SNL. Looking for potential cast members among standup comedians doesn't make too much sense to me...unless you do a lot of impressions in your standup, you're only really showing one character you have that's funny. (This is why Chris Rock didn't really work on SNL; he's funny just being himself.)

Then again, I don't think looking at all the poor schmucks that will come to these auditions is really the solution. I guess I think they should be looking in the colleges and conservatories that are attracting young talented people.

I have to admit I might find myself at one of these auditions, depending on the nature of them (and if I really have the time to waste)...I really suck at improv. This isn't modesty, I think I'm decently funny when I know what I'm going to say ahead of time, but I really do suck at improv. And I've never improvved by myself. Standup I've never done before.
