Weekend Update
by C.C. Star, J. Farrell, J., J.P. Ragan, M.J. Reese II, P. Srivastava, R. Stockton

As always, I'm skipping my own stuff. Figure I'll do a joke by joke rundown since we have some time until the next episode (Jennifer Garner take two).
Social Security : Decently funny. Grammar Time: There's no need to put quotation marks around a word unless it's actually a quote ("Four score and seven years ago..."), a short piece of work (Ace of Base's "The Sign" or Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart"), the word itself being refered to ("Sheep" is an interesting word because it is the same when pluralized...) or someone else's term (these "snRNA" are found in the nucleus...). It just seems silly around "mike" here. (I get to use them cause I'm refering to the word itself and not an actual mike.)
Colombian Soldiers : Funny, but a tad predictable.
John : The award for innovatively titled character of the week goes to a certain Seattle denizen who shall remain anonymous. This piece was good, but it didn't seem to last long enough to really develop into a comedic piece over an expressive rant. While more exaggeration is always an option, I think another technique which might be employed is more use of local color. Other than the rain, there was nothing in here that really screamed Seattle to me. And I'm not refering to a lame grunge/flannel reference.
Strong Dollar Policy : I remember reading this article too and wondering where the best joke is. Still haven't found it, this joke is alright but more about Bush than the subject at hand.
Iraqi Awards : Good joke, but the set-up is a bit garbly. I think some trimming could be done to bring this from four lines to three, if not two.
Nude Photo Shoot : I guess as long as we have dual female anchors this sort of stuff is bound to happen. Well-written but feels gimmicky.
Jenna Bush : Well done. Funny and to the point. Can't ask for more.
C-SPAN : Nice and goofy.
Man Bites Dog : Bit of an outdated catch-phrase, but it's nice and snappy.
Tobacco Coffin : I really like the twist to this one, very well crafted and funny.
Britney's Shit : I don't want to hear anything about this story developing.
Marijuana Coffins : Does a good job pointing out the ridiculousness of the situation, but more than anything else in WU, this joke's funniness would depend heavily on delivery.
Santa Claus : A funny look at the gift delivery industry with a well introduced theme of outsourcing. The Ferrell bit in the beginning seems a bit weak and detracts, in my opinion. Otherwise, I think this is a very well conceived piece. Perhaps a funny line or two could be added in here or there, but the sum whole is a strong commentary.
Peterson : And perhaps if he had been a star football player, I'd still care about jokes about this guy. Probably not though.
Mexicans : When you use three in a row like that, the mind is trained to look for a funny twist on the third. With it going Vermont, Rhode Island, Utah, you've created a list where the third is unlike the first two, but not really to comic effect. It seems to me on an intellectual level like you were just listing three states without many Mexicans, but on a gut level I'm confused.
Osama Tape : Didn't quite get the joke here, especially as WalMart, in my mind, is inextricably linked to corporate censorship.
Jason Biggs : A bit weak. It's hardly an unexpected punchline.
Jay-C : As far as Jay-C appearances go, this is head and shoulders above the rest, imo. I still think it's damn gross, but there's a definite effort in making the joke a bit more than "I like little girls, all laugh at me." The menorah and milk and cookies references work, in so much as I can find anything working in such a bit.

And that's that. I think I wrote more in response to WU than WU was itself.
