Subject: Last Episode Review for 2004!!
In reply to: Patrick Lonergan 's message, "REVIEWS: Robert De Niro 12/18/04" on 10:10:09 12/18/04 Sat

I think my habit of taking a long time for reviews has paid off, and this is the last Episode Review for 2004.
Right off the bat I have to admit that SNY was better. The variety of the many submissions lead to an all around excellent episode.
Off Topic: Bush got Time’s Person of the Year, god help us all! It could have been worse, at least Paris Hilton was not in the running.

Opening: De Niro kidnaping Lorne, it was an interesting concept. The whole cue card thing was a nice reference to his past hosting experience but it wasn’t extremely hilarious. Cybill Shepard was a nice touch for the sketch.

Monologue: A continuation of the opening. I haven’t seen King of Comedy, so I didn’t get all of the references. But nevertheless the monologue still had it’s high moments. Robert De Niro hitting on Maya was okay.

Racist Catch-Phrase: This was an interesting concept. A solid sketch, and I liked the lines at the end about Meet the Fockers. The whole idea that people make racist jokes for fun and use stereotypes as clues is pretty common in families. I would have added a part where Roger gets angry and gets all patriotic about how “A man can’t speak freely in his own home” “Being PC has gone to far, those things may be racist but I gotta win, and if winning means being racist, then that’s all right with me!”: Those lines may be extreme for the sketch, but that’s funny to me, ignorant people need to lampooned.

Caller 25: An overall funny sketch. De Niro as the DJ was humorous. Obviously it would be hilarious if we could actually see De Niro pull off those dance moves. But as it was written I found the DJ’s obsession with those Lisa Loeb glasses the funniest. I’ve heard radio DJ’s that start going insane as they get closer to that 100th caller. They start rambling on about the different prizes and always get obsessed by one. So good lampoon. I will comment on the music selection since it was the talk of the past few threads. When De Niro was trying to prove his cool-ness. The fact that he picked an outdated song was funny. I would have laughed seeing De Niro dance on any song!

Celebrity Holiday Special: I found the sketch humorous. Yeah it was kind of stale with Ashlee Simpson and Billy Joel, they are old comedic bits. Haha he’s drunk, and ha she can’t sing. But that is what all these annoying Christmas Specials feature, stale celebrities. As well as a couple of has-beens along with nauseating musical numbers. So great sketch guys!

WU: I wrote the Day Without A Mexican Joke. I was trying to just give a couple of states that didn’t have many people of Hispanic descent in them. Utah wasn’t really the punch line. But instead, I should have just said one state without Mexicans.
The Jay C bit was kind of weak. It was a good attempt, but Pedophiles around the holidays just don’t suit me. The Santa commentary was my favorite this week. Now that’s a good idea, Santa outsourcing! Nice job Jack. Taking away hundreds of knick knacks from the attic, guys from India as Santa. The Steroid commentary was okay. Actually Finesse was a good choice for the interviewer. The Mr. Clean crack was pretty good.
The air-traffic bit was so-so, it could have been better. My favorite jokes were Columbian Soldiers in Iraq, Jenna Bush joke, and the Jason Biggs joke. Overall, a WU filled with a lot of submissions with a lot of great comedy.

Dreams Come True: Probably every-man’s fantasy. So obviously this is a good sketch. Comedy-wise there were a couple of good lines, the last few by the devil, and Maya Rudolph’s half black remark. Other then that it was okay. I think these sketches are more for show than to be funny.

Big Table vs Little Table: I liked the concept, perfect for the holidays. If only we could actually see these sketches. The effect would have been much more hilarious. I would have laughed seeing a couple of adults crouched together on a plastic table waiting for food. The positive Timmy character was also a plus. I would have expanded the sketch by including the kids trying to take-over the big table(taking Grandma hostage). Then suddenly John can come and say that there is still some food being prepared in the kitchen. Since it’s all being written we can get a little crazy with the comedy.

Christmas in Australia: This was weird, and awkward. But different, not your average sketch. The Drunk guy singing pina-coolada was some-what humorous. The premises of a guy actually being Frosty was okay, but it really didn’t find me as funny. You managed to pull some great one-liners and the whole Tim Allen thing was funny. A different sketch that provided some mixed laughs.

Worst Bus Ride Ever: More of those Dark comedy sketches. It reminds a lot of the slapping car salesman from De Niro’s first hosting gig. The premises was good, but it was too abrupt, I would have added an ending tag-line. Ed Kraft saying “No body pisses me off!” Or a disclaimer from the bus company saying “Please be kind on the bus!”

Mario’s Pizza: Not bad! Pushing the envelope with Italian Pizza Chefs. There were a couple great lines. The line about “if you want more cheese then go to Switzerland” and the ending dialogue was great. The simplicity and perfect casting made this a sketch that could be easily performed on the real show.

Holiday Fun: I wasn’t trying to go for the Anti Nick and Jessica special. I was trying to figure out why Tim McGraw and Nelly decided to collaborate. It wasn’t my best because I rushed to finish it in time.

Torch Song Part 2: I liked the 1st part better. This was more of some so-so drinking song. Then again there sure is a lot of drinking around the Holidays. It provides more of a show-tune ballad to overshadow the comedy of the rest of the episode. But there were a few good one-liners. To see tough “De Niro” singing songs. They did that in the real episode when he sang with Kermit. So I’ll have to say that this was an okay sketch.

Overall: Nice show. Rounded out the season and the year.
Well, it’s December 31st so I would like to say Happy New Year to everyone here at SNY. Goodnight and good luck for 2005 to everyone!
